FEATURE STORY
MEET
LOREL AI
VEGA
By Jillian Keith
From Liesl in The Sound of Music to Scrooge’s past girlfriend in A Christmas Carol (The Musical), Lorelai Vega is no stranger to gracing the The Naples Players (TNP) stage in romantic tragedies. Now, Lorelai is taking on, ‘one of her biggest challenges yet’ playing Luisa in TNP’s upcoming romantic fable, and the longest running musical in the world, The Fantasticks. A romantic musical filled with plot twists and turns, The Fantasticks is an alleogorical story that focuses on two young lovers, their meddling fathers, and the journey we all must take through life. “When they first announced that The Fantasticks was happening this season, I was

THE FANTASTICKS
like, ‘if there’s any show I wanna do this season, this is the one.’ I wanted to be cast in the show so badly, so to be cast as one of the leads is surreal.” Luisa, an 18-year-old girl who falls in love with a boy her father disapproves of, is based off of the likes of characters such as Juliet in Romeo and
Juliet and Sylvette in Les Romanesques. Despite her tragic star-crossed lover back story, Lorelai is eager to take on this role, and that Luisa is, “girlhood and growing up into the woman personified. I’m lucky I get to play this role, it’s very exciting for me. I relate to Luisa in a lot of ways - it’s not everyday that you get to play someone your own age. She has complex feelings and is growing into her own person.” Lorelai herself is an 18-year-old girl who has a love of her own: theatre. First joining TNP’s KidzAct program in 2018, Lorelai has since performed in nearly every KidzAct show and several mainstage productions. “As soon as I joined TNP, I was locked in. From the first show I did, I was like, ‘this is what I want to do.’ I was doing gymnastics and dance at the same time, and as soon as I did my first show, everything else in my life took a backseat. Nothing was as important to me as theatre. This is my priority and it’s what I want to do.”
ing theatre here, I wasn’t sure that performing was something I’m actually good at. I didn’t used to put in nearly as much work to my auditions and training as I do now, and the people here made me want to put in the work. Everyone here works so hard, and you want to be like them and not let anyone down, you know?” “I feel like I still have a lot to learn from TNP and about performing in general. I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning something new. I’m in dance lessons and voice lessons all the time, and take acting classes, but I feel like I learn the most when I’m doing a show and by seeing the acting choices other people make. During every show I feel like I exercise and focus on different aspects of performing whether it be dance or acting or singing, and I take my notes, and the notes other performers receive very seriously. I try to be a sponge and soak up every piece of advice I can.” (continued on page 20)
Despite often finding herself during several productions at TNP at once, Lorelai has never found herself growing tired of being here. “Sometimes I catch myself thinking, ‘Am I exhausted? Yes. Am I tired of it? No way.’ I love how no two shows are ever the same. When you’re doing a show, every show’s intention is different, and how the audience reacts is always different. The cast, every acting choice you make - it all changes, even if it’s the same show. I love that when I think of memories from every show I’ve ever done, no two shows feel the same. I just love that and I think it’s so much fun.” It’s not only the training and shows that keep Lorelai coming back to TNP - the relationships she’s built her have been, “unbelievable. Everyone is so encouraging and inspiring. Before do-
I love the people here. I always joke that I’m going to bring in my own cot and stay here overnight so that I can be with these people all the time. – LORELAI VEGA THE NAPLES PLAYERS

LORELAI VEGA Continued From Page 19
Moving forward, Lorelai is certain that the lessons she’s learned, and the people she’s met, at TNP have changed the trajectory of her future career in performing arts. “I plan on moving to New York City after I graduate, and the only reason I feel confident enough to take that leap is because of TNP. Everyone I’ve taken a class from or made a connection with has played a massive role in offering me something that I can use in my performances and for the rest of my life. Everyone here has pushed, supported, and challeged me all while having my best interests at heart. It’s a combination of all the people I’ve met that make me feel like my dreams will come true and I will find my path.” “TNP is my home. I feel the safest when I’m here and so connected to everyone. It’s like a second family. I was always find any reason and drop everything to be here. When I’m not at TNP, I want to be here - and it doesn’t matter if we’re downtown or not. Wherever TNP is is where I’m the happiest and whenever I’m surrounded by the people here I’m always having a good time.”

Off-Broadway’s Longest Running Show Carries a
COMPLEX HISTORY Arguably one of the most produced plays in theater history with more than 11,000 productions mounted in all 50 US states and 67 countries, The Fantasticks opened off-Broadway in 1960 and ran for a staggering 42 years. A simple story simply told, the original investors still managed to make back 240 percent of their original investment.
The musical is based on Cyrano de Bergerac playwright Edmond Rostand’s Les Romanesques (The Romantics), which in turn takes it story from the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and Dominco Donizetti’s opera, L’eliser d’amore (The Elixir of Love). That’s a lot of pedigree for a small musical with no real orchestra, only a handful of actors, and an easy, hummable score! Playwright and lyricist Tom Jones also says he drew references from sources as varied as Thornton Wilder’s minimalist design in Our Town, and staging ideas from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. At a time when Broadway musicals could be mounted for about $250,000, The Fantasticks spent under $2000 on costumes, sets and props combined! The show made a star of Jerry Orbach (later of Law and Order fame) as El Gallo, but a number of stars worked on the show during its 42-year run. Glenn Close, Kristin Chenoweth, Liza Minelli and F. Murray Abraham all spent time keeping the show alive off Broadway for some of its more than 17,000 performances.

THE FANTASTICKS
Still, despite its popularity with audiences, the show has gone in and out of fashion with critics. Once viewed as charming and sweet, the play’s darker themes and “romanticizing” of rape in the second act came under attack in the 1990s. The uproar led authors Schmidt and Jones to write a replacement number called “Abduction Ballet.” It’s not a change that seems to bother Jones, who continued to tinker with the show well into its 50+ years of production. “It Depends on What You Pay” - which also features references to rape - has gone through multiple rewrites, as did an updated “Round and Round” in which El Gallo shows Luisa the darker side of life. Indeed, Jones has indicated in interviews that the original production might not have been dark enough, wanting the mask used in the staging to represent a “darker purpose or power.” As TNP gears up for its own production of this classic, it will look to provide a very 21st-century lens to look at a story that has changed and deepened with each generation of new audiences.

CAST BIOS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER) BRAXTON CABRERA (Male Understudy) is a freshman at Gulf Coast High, and is elated (and nervous) for his first time swinging a production. He has great respect for all the wonderful swings in theatre that work hard at what they do, and is extremely grateful he has received the opportunity to do so. He would like to thank the creative team and all of his fellow actors, as they are all immensely talented people he looks up to. He hopes you enjoy this “Fantastick” show! Past TNP credits: Phoebus/Hunchback Teen, Friedrich/The Sound of Music-Salzburg Cast, Jonathon/Ensemble/A Christmas Carol: The Musical.
JIM CORSICA (Bellomy) was most recently seen in the Tobye Studio as Gus/Southern Comforts and as Ranger Tom/Escanaba in da Moonlight, and on the Blackburn stage as Ensemble/Bum/The Wedding Singer. Other TNP roles include: Nicely Nicely Johnson/Guys and Dolls, Jacey Squires/The Music Man, The Narrator/The Rocky Horror Show, Inspector Kemp/Young Frankenstein and Stage Manager/Our Town. Elsewhere, Jim is part of the Gulfshore Playhouse production, Remember: The Story of Abe Price, was Harry Brock/Born Yesterday and Batman (ret.)/Bruce Kane OneActs for the Marco Players, Salieri’s Cook/Amadeus for TheatreZone, Bill Sr./Clever Little Lies for The Studio Players, and Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare In Paradise’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The
Dream team
Composer Harvey Schmidt and lyricist Tom Jones are the legendary writing team best known for shaping the American musical landscape with their 1960 hit, The Fantasticks. After its Off-Broadway opening in May 1960, it went on to become the longest-running production in the history of the American stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world.
Their first Broadway show, 110 in the Shade, was revived on Broadway in a new production starring Audra MacDonald. I Do! I Do!, their two-character musical starring Mary Martin and Robert Preston, was a success on Broadway and is frequently done around the country. For several years Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theatre workshop, concentrating on small-scale musicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts were Celebration, which moved to Broadway, and Philemon, which won an Outer Critics Circle Award. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the Off-Broadway play Colette starring Zoe Caldwell, then later did a full-scale musical version under the title Colette Collage. The Show Goes On, a musical revue featuring their theatre songs and starring Jones and Schmidt, was presented at the York Theatre, and Mirette, their musical based on the award-winning children’s book, was premiered at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut. In addition to an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award for The Fantasticks, Jones and Schmidt were inducted into the Broadway Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre, and on May 3, 1999 their ‘stars’ were added to the Off-Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Then in 2012, Jones & Schmidt were honored by being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
