EMBRACING EVERY ROLE By Lauren Speirs

Long-serving volunteer Paul LoPresti has been involved at The Naples Players (TNP) since 2008 when he performed in Cabaret. “My wife was here first, teaching dance classes, fundraising, and helping to produce Cabaret. I auditioned even though I have no background in theatre but I always enjoyed it and found it interesting. I’ll never forget my audition...I sang my song and Charlie (Fornara, musical director) was behind the piano and said “Where have you been singing?” and I replied, “In my car for thirty years!” TNP was delighted to have a new performer and Paul was cast in Cabaret. “I had a non-speaking part in Cabaret - I was the club owner! I always loved the movie with Liza Minnelli and after that performance, I caught the bug and did a string of musicals at TNP.” Paul is not exaggerating - he has appeared in more than ten productions here at TNP! Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly, Anything Goes, My Fair Lady, Calendar Girls, Guys and Dolls, and The Great Gatsby, to name a few. “What I love about theatre is the camaraderie. I played sports all my life and it is a similar feeling for me to work together with everyone in the theatre. What’s great about TNP is that everyone is on the same level. Everyone wants to do their best and they’re all so nice here!” By day, Paul is a Wells Fargo Financial Advisor and points out that being on stage is “totally

different from my day job. At work, I am focused on taking care of my clients. Acting has opened up a whole other world and is a great release for me. None of it has ever come natural to me. I’m good one-on-one with my clients but I used to have stage fright when speaking in front of large groups. The theatre has helped me immensely with that! I started doing seminars at work and really got to know myself. Ultimately, I gained more confidence from performing and am much more comfortable in front of groups of people.” Some might assume that working all day and performing in the evenings might be too much but Paul says, “it’s the opposite of what you might think - my energy levels go up! The adrenaline is flowing when you’re rehearsing and performing.” Paul has been in Naples since 1994 when he and his wife moved down from Long Island. He jokes, “Twenty-seven years and I still have my accent - it’s not giving up yet!” He goes on to say that “it took two visits to Naples and a meal at The Dock Restaurant” to convince them to relocate. “It was easy to move my business, I just needed the phone and computer.” In A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Paul will be working with the backstage crew for the second half of the show. “I’m not sure what

LOPRESTI I’ll be doing just yet but I like to stay involved even when I can’t audition. I’m also doing Readers Theatre coming up - I was fortunate enough to be cast. I did Readers Theatre years ago when I took a sabbatical from performing because my business was growing and I needed to concentrate on work.” Paul wanted to come back in 2016 after tending to his business but he had neck cancer and double bypass surgery within two months of each other.

“My Fair Lady was my first show back. I had radiation in my neck and I wasn’t sure if I could sing. I was fortunate to get a small solo in the Cockney Quartet and it was a great comeback show.”

Speaking of My Fair Lady, Paul admits that, “we were in rehearsal and somebody told us there were these cakes in the refrigerator that said “MFL (My Fair Lady)” on them. Thomas Richardson, a young actor who came through KidzAct and was lots of fun to be around, did a couple of shows with me before and we really bonded. The two of us ate the cakes and later he ran into the dressing room and said, ‘We ate the prop food!!!’” Of course, when the subject came up later that night with the director, Dawn Fornara, Paul said, “It wasn’t me, it was Thomas!” A special moment from My Fair Lady that Paul will always remember is, “At the end of

EMBRACING EVERY ROLE Continued From Page 11 the show, Eliza (Elizabeth Marcantonio) has to say ‘goodbye’ to all of us who are playing the townspeople. During the final performance, there was a whole bunch of people crying - it was so emotional. I saw it in her (Elizabeth’s) face that she almost couldn’t finish her lines.” Here at The Naples Players, we consider ourselves lucky to have volunteers who are truly jacks of all trades. Not only does Paul volunteer on stage and backstage, but he is also a dedicated donor and serves on TNP’s Finance Committee. “I was selected because of my background and we handle the overall income statements and balance sheets. This is a thriving organization with a lot of resources. We have a lot of great people contributing. Bryce (Alexander, CEO/ Artistic Director) is business oriented, fast, bright, and he knows the theatre - he directed me in my first nonmusical, The Great Gatsby.” Paul thrives in the friendly and supportive community at TNP.

“I just love being around all the cast and crew. I like connecting with people, everyone here is great, and it’s just an enjoyable time!” Interested in volunteering? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players!

Volunteers have options to commit to time frames backstage ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 weeks. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy.

Story H THE K E E P IN G U P W IT

Welcome to 1907 London. Meet Monty Navarro, a penniless clerk who, on the night of his mother’s funeral, learns an incredible truth: he is the “son of the daughter of the grandson of the nephew of the second Earl of Highhurst.” In other words, Monty is an aristocrat, ninth in line to become the Earl - if only he can prevent the eight in line ahead of him from inheriting the earldom first. After the current Earl dismisses Monty’s claim to being a family member, all of the eight D’Ysquiths who rank ahead of Monty begin dying in a variety of natural and unnatural ways, with the audience laughing all the while! Each unfortunate D’Ysquith death is more creative than the preceding one. And even when Monty is at his scheming worst, we still want to root for him. Meanwhile, Monty is busy wooing money-obsessed and self-centered Sibella Hallward, but he also is attracted to young Phoebe D’Ysquith. This secondary plot brings us a delicious love triangle involving Monty and two women - Sibella, who refuses to marry someone as poor as Monty even though she loves him; and Phoebe, a stylish, witty, and distant D’Ysquith cousin clearly suited to become his countess. Buoyed by love for two women, Monty has his work cut out for him, and the audience is treated to an Edwardian-style classic farce.

A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER

History A B IT O F

A Gentleman’s Guide To Love and Murder has a pair of well-known antecedents. It was originally based on Roy Horniman’s 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal. Decades later, the musical would become familiar to anyone who has seen the 1949 Alec Guinness movie, Kind Hearts and Coronets. From novel to movie to the stage, this story has been intriguing audiences for well more than a century! Kind Hearts and Coronets was voted the seventh greatest British film of all time in 2004 and it was included in Time's 2005 list of the top 100 films since 1923. It was filmed at the famous Ealing Studios, a production company that has been housed at Ealing Green in West London since 1902. Ealing is the oldest working studio facility for film production in the world, best known for classic films produced in the postWWII years. Interior scenes of the wildly popular British television series Downton Abbey were shot at Ealing. The Met Film School London also operates there. When Michael Balcon, head of Ealing Studios, produced Kind Hearts and Coronets, he was interested in the themes of class and sexual repression, particularly love between classes, which are hilariously characterized in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.

MAKING THE CALLS... By Lauren Speirs

Meet 16-year-old KC Allen, one of The Naples Players’ (TNP) assistant stage managers for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, KC moved to Naples when she was ten years old. When KC’s mom Kayle was looking to open her specialty store, The Spice and Tea Exchange of Naples, originally located right here on 5th Avenue South, Kayle was happy to discover our theatre and encouraged both of her children to audition. Before COVID-19, KC took part in TNP’s Leadership Team Member program which is designed to introduce high school students to every aspect of theatre. The program involves a selective process where older students choose younger students who show dedication to theatre and TNP. “This is how I was introduced to stage management - I got to call a few things in Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Teen.” For those of us who don’t know, when a stage manager talks about ‘calling’ a show, they’re referring to giving every single cue to make a performance happen - from calling the actors to the stage to start an act, to giving cues for lights and sound...and everything in between! KC also auditioned for TNP’s production of Footloose and when she didn’t get a spot to be on stage, she took the time to think about what she wanted her role with theatre to be in the future. “I took it as an opportunity to step back. I wanted to be involved in theatre, but I wasn’t

38

TNP BACKSTAGE

sure what to focus on. I really enjoyed all the backstage crew work so I was a production assistant for The Wedding Singer and an assistant stage manager for The Wedding Singer Teen.” From her backstage experience KC says, “It was all very eye opening to experience the other side of things (outside of being a performer on stage). You learn how many things can go wrong and how many things need to be fixed on the spot. No matter what part of the theater you work in, you learn to use problem solving along with your creative side - I always feel like I’m simultaneously using my academic skills with my theatrical skills.” Set on a clear path for the future, KC looks forward to applying to colleges and working towards getting her BA in theatre.

“I always had the problem of - I want to do everything! I knew I needed a plan for my future and being an assistant stage manager has helped me narrow it down. I want to learn everything to write and produce for television and film from my BA program.”

As far as A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder goes, KC is excited to see how it all turns out!

“We know renovations are coming soon to the theater so we want to go out with a bang and make this show as grand as possible! There are a lot of crew members and multiple scene changes. Everyone has to be on top of their game because it’s such a massive show!” KC and her brother, Leonard, spend so much of their time at TNP, she says, “the family joke is that we wish there were dormitories so we could just move in!” She’s also grateful to have Leonard with her as they always were a positive influence on each other, and always encouraged one another to stick with theater. “We will go our separate ways (in our careers) in life but we will always have that shared love of theatre.”

Overall, KC’s favorite experience at TNP is being an assistant stage manager. “I’ve seen some of the older kids, whom I looked up to when I was younger, leave after this summer’s productions to go on to college. Now, I’m the older kid. It just made me realize how happy I am that I found TNP and I honestly don’t know what I would do without a jam-packed theater schedule! For me, my time working on The Wedding Singer was a moment where I realized how much I love it and how thankful I am for everyone I work with and all the mentors I’ve had here over the years.“ For more information about all the meaningful ways to volunteer at The Naples Players please contact Pamela Larkin Caruso at plarkincaruso@naplesplayers.org or (239) 434 -7340, ext. 104. Additionally, to find out more about KidzAct, please contact Maya Kleinsorge at mkleinsorge@naplesplayers.org or (239) 4347340, ext. 136.

TODD POTTER............... (S c e n i c D e s i g ne r) Watching paint dry is a very individual experience, almost an art, and it’s something you have to get a feel for yourself. It wouldn’t be right for me to lay the law down. My way works for me, it may not be right for anyone else. But I can pass on a few tips from an old paint watching pro to help novice emulsioneers avoid some of the obvious pitfalls. Never, ever, under any circumstances, be gulled into buying anything with the words “One Coat” in the advertising material. Even if it worked, “one coat” is precisely the thing to avoid – the more applications you can wring out of a tin the more drying paint you’ll have to keep an eye on. Like “Quick Drying” one coat is designed by the devil to make you work longer, harder and faster than is absolutely essential. And of course it does not work. “One Coat” leaves the fool who fell for it feeling incompetent, inadequate, and inferior to his decorating compadres whom he assumes have all managed to actually cover a wall satisfactorily with a single sweep of the loaded roller. Men never talk about this. It’s time we opened up about our One Coat dysfunctions. There’s no shame in admitting it happens to all of us. Thank you Kenny D, Chase, Mike, Jillian and Volunteers for making this come to life. Nina! Stop licking your paws.
