THE

STORY

Prince Eric and the sailors are aboard ship; Grimsby wants Eric to return home and become king, but Eric hears a beautiful voice and wants to follow it. On the ocean floor in the merfolk kingdom, King Triton rules. We learn that his youngest daughter, Ariel, is fascinated by the human world. We also learn that Ursula is seeking revenge against her brother, King Triton. She was banished from the palace for using black magic, and wants an eye kept on Ariel, whom she thinks is key to getting the royal crown and trident. Ariel returns home from a visit to the human world, and King Triton is angry that she’s been on the surface. Triton believes humans are savage fish-eaters. Ariel rushes off, and the King assigns Sebastian to keep her out of trouble. Alone with her collection of human things, Ariel imagines life in the human world. Ariel travels to the surface for a close look at Prince Eric’s ship. On board,

Grimsby tells Eric he must find a bride and take his place as king. Then, a sudden storm hits, and Eric is tossed overboard. Ariel saves him from drowning and drags him to shore. She is falling in love and vows to find a way to be with him. When Ariel returns home, her sisters suspect she has fallen in love; while back on land, Eric is determined to find the woman who saved his life. His only clue is her voice. King Triton learns that Ariel has saved a human; he angrily confronts her, uncovers her grotto, and uses his trident to destroy Ariel’s human collection. After the King leaves, Sebastian tries to comfort Ariel by extolling the wonders of the undersea world. She is disappointed with him for reporting to her father and sneaks off. Once away, Flotsam and Jetsam convince her to ask Ursula for help. Ursula offers her a deal: Ariel will be turned into a human for three days to try and win the kiss of true love from Eric. If successful, she will be human permanently; if not, Ursula will claim her soul.

Ariel must give up her voice that will stay in Ursula’s magic nautilus shell. Ariel signs the agreement, sings into the shell, transforms into a human, and swims to the surface. Eric arrives and takes Ariel to his palace for a tour of the kingdom and a boat ride. Sebastian and Scuttle try to create a romantic atmosphere for Eric to kiss her; but as they are about to kiss, Flotsam and Jetsam give the boat a shock and swim away gloating. As the second day ends, Ariel wishes she had more time and could tell Eric everything. Triton, worried about his daughter, vows to change if she returns. Sebastian knows that Ariel’s time as a human is almost up, and Eric still dreams of finding the girl who saved him - but he doesn’t want to lose Ariel. Sebastian tells an angry King Triton about Ariel’s deal with Ursula. On Ariel’s last day as a human, there is a contest for foreign princesses to sing for Eric so he can choose a bride.

Ariel asks to participate. Eric chooses her, but before they can embrace, Ursula declares the sun has set and Ariel now belongs to her. Triton arrives to confront his sister, agreeing to take Ariel’s place. Ursula claims the trident and declares herself queen. She banishes Triton. Ariel grabs Ursula’s nautilus shell and regains her voice. Ursula begs Ariel to return the shell (her power) and even tries to bargain with her by saying she can make her human and reunite her with her prince. Ariel destroys the shell just in time, destroying Ursula and restoring Triton to his throne. Eric and Ariel are reunited; he proposes and she accepts. King Triton says goodbye to his daughter and declares peace between humans and merfolk. Ariel and Eric are married and sail away to live happily ever after.

The Creative

Geniuses behind The incredible success of The Little Mermaid movie led to a stage adaptation in 2007 with a book by Doug Wright and additional songs by Alan Menken, two of the most successful and prolific Broadway professionals. Doug Wright, an accomplished playwright, librettist and screenwriter wrote the wildly successful play I Am My Own Wife and won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for drama. His play Quills also won several awards, and he wrote the book for Grey Gardens, another Broadway success. Born in Dallas, Texas, Wright excelled in theater in high school and was President of the Thespian Club. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale in 1985 and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University. Doug is a member of the Dramatists Guild and a board member of the New York Theatre Workshop. Awards include the William L. Bradley Fellowship at Yale, Charles MacArthur Fellowship at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, an HBO Fellowship in playwriting, and the Alfred Hodder Fellowship at Princeton.

You’re in the Know... Fun Facts about

Sebastian was supposed to be a stuffy British butler crab named Clarence. But when the music was written, Clarence was changed into a Rastafarian named Sebastian because calypso was so popular. Hexapus? Because of the tentacles, most people believe Ursula is partoctopus. But count the number of tentacles: she only has six, not eight. Ariel has 6 older sisters, and all of their names start with the letter A. To make room for the The Little Mermaid, Disney closed Beauty and the Beast on July 29, 2007 for fear that the audience and tourists would fight over them. In the Japanese version of the show, Ariel is 18 years old. The actor who originally played Flounder had to leave the show shortly after it opened because he had grown taller than Sierra Boggess, the Little Mermaid! Before the musical closed Sierra left the show to work on other things. She still came to visit her former cast members and they remain friends to this day. She was on hand as a guest for the final performance.
