T WO NIGH T S O N LY !
DEC 8&9 Naples City Council has approved The Naples Players’ (TNP) holiday production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play to be performed downtown in Cambier Park. Sponsored by Transcend Capital Advisors, this holiday classic will run for two nights only - December 8th and 9th, 2023. It’s Christmas Eve in 1946. An energetic buzz fills the studio as a cast of actors prepare for their performance of It’s a Wonderful Life with a live, listening audience - you! Described by Chicago Sun-Times as “One of the best holiday shows around. This is a fresh and inventive way of reconnecting with a classic story of love and redemption,” It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is based on the classic 1946 holiday movie with a clever twist: the production is staged as a live radio broadcast. Seven actors will bring more than 40 different characters to life to share the story of George Bailey, a generous and small-town man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. It will take the help of a lovable guardian angel, Clarence, to show George a journey of redemption, proving that “no one is a failure who has friends.” Don’t miss out on the show that The Chicago Tribune stated is, “a well-loved tale told with style, charm and a heart so big it could burst the ribcage of the harshest Grinch.” and called, “a fresh theatrical context that creates just the right kind of retro warmth. If you cry every time you see the movie, you’ll be blubbering away right on cue...Guaranteed.” Performed for two nights only at 8pm on December 8th and 9th, 2023, It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play will be presented outdoors in Cambier Park while The Naples Players’ historic 5th Avenue South building undergoes a $21 million renovation. General tickets are $49, and season ticket holders are offered a price of $39. Those interested can visit NaplesPlayers.org anytime or call the TNP Box Office at (239) 263-7990.

FEATURE STORY
MEET
BRAYDEN & McKENNA
CLOUD By Jillian Keith
Love at first sight may seem like something that only happens in Jane Austen novels, but for new volunteers, Brayden and McKenna Cloud, their love story is just as dreamy as the one they’re acting out in The Naples Players’ (TNP) production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Brayden, cast as Arthur de Bourgh, and McKenna, cast as Mary Bennet, are newlyweds performing in their first production together. “We’ve been given this very sweet opportunity to play opposite of each other. I’ve really enjoyed this whole process. It’s really fun to work together as a married couple, and it’s definitely always been a dream of mine to do a show with my wife. It’s worked out in such a wonderful way with an incredible play,” says Brayden.
moving here and working at a nearby theater, I realized that The Naples Players is wonderful! I auditioned and was really excited to get involved in community theatre. This community is very accepting and open. There’s a lot of word around town about how loving and welcoming TNP is and the quality of productions being put on here. It brings you in, and keeps you coming back because once you’re a part of the community, it’s so wonderful.”
When McKenna and Brayden moved to Naples, it was important to McKenna to find her space in the art community here. “My grandparents have lived here for 30 years and they’ve always loved seeing shows in the area. When I came into town and was driving down Fifth Avenue, I asked them about The Naples Players because it is such a beautiful theater. When I ended up
For McKenna, acting has been a massive part of her life since she was two years old. “My dad was an actor and my mom was an artist, so they brought me into the world really young. I remember being a toddler and hanging out backstage passing them props. I then went to school for dramatic classic theater, and ended up acting all day, every day, and loving it.” Like so many,

McKenna’s life was impacted by the COVID pandemic. “My health got really bad, and I had to embark on the journey of halting something that I loved and had been doing for so long. It’s really great coming back to theatre and getting to do something like this again.” Brayden has used this opportunity to rediscover his love for performing through his marriage and this show. He’s grown especially fond of scenes when Arthur tries to connect with Mary. “I love all of those moments. They’ve been really key to my character development because I put a lot of myself into Arthur. He’s very similar to me, and I realized during the rehearsal process that that is the case in more ways than I thought. Those scenes remind me of how I thought I was doing a good job flirting with McKenna, and she had no idea I was even interested in her. It’s like I’m getting to relive falling in love with McKenna all over again, but through someone else’s script and words.”
For McKenna, being cast as Mary Bennet was a “full-circle moment. I was a dresser for Mary when I was in college, and ever since then, I’ve wanted to do it. It’s one of my favorite shows. Lauren Gunderson is such a good writer. It’s a really heartwarming story that will leave you with such a good feeling. The message, while in alignment with Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, really touches on how to be a part of a family when you’re all different. One of my lines, ‘She deserves as much kindness and patience as anyone,’ is reflected in how despite getting angry and hurting each other, the sisters learn to come together and put their bond first. The show also emphasizes never giving up on finding the right person. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true. Growing up, I always thought, ‘the perfect guy for me doesn’t exist,’ and I think Mary and a lot of others think that too. But then, I
McKenna admits that she was both excited and nervous to share the stage with her partner, “You know what they say, ‘if you don’t have chemistry on stage, that means you’re great together in real life. But if you do have chemistry on stage, that means you’re horrible and in real life, you can’t be a couple.’ When we walked into the callbacks our audition was so awkward. I walked out thinking that there was no way we were getting cast together. But we did! It’s made our relationship closer, and we’ve seen a lot of great growth as a couple and actors. He’s a natural talent with great impulses, so working with him in this new way has been really fun.”
The rehearsal process has been fun, lighthearted, and productive. This cast is like a family. We started hanging out before we started rehearsal. The cast bonding has been effortless, which is rare, and has allowed us to play off each other a lot. – BRAYDEN & McKENNA CLOUD

met Brayden, and it just instantly clicked - he’s the perfect guy for me. That person does exist for people. You should never give up on finding family or relationships that are perfect for you.” After three weeks of rehearsals, both Brayden and McKenna are blown away by how much fun the rehearsal process has been. “The team here at TNP is like no other - the costumes, the sets, the stage management and direction, the lights and sound - it’s just as professional as a professional company. And more,” says McKenna. “If you know nothing about Pride and Prejudice, you’re going to have a great time. If you know everything about Pride and Prejudice, you’re going to have a fabulous time. Lauren Gunderson was the number one most-produced playwright in 2019 for a reason. The show is hilarious and I’m proud for my family and friends to come and see it, and I don’t say that about every show.” Congratulations on your first production together, Brayden and McKenna! Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley will be performed at Naples United Church of Christ in McSpadden Hall from November 1 - 19, 2023.

P laywrights The
Margot MELCON
Lauren GUNDERSON
DY N A MIC DUO Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon have made significant contributions to the theater with thought-provoking and captivating works. Collaboratively, they have crafted audience favorites that explore love, friendship, and the human experience. Their compelling narratives and complex characters have earned critical acclaim and a dedicated following. The idea for their first collaboration, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, was born on a road trip together in 2014. The play, a holiday favorite, shows the complications of being part of a family of dynamic women and what it means to love and support one another. Gunderson is an accomplished playwright in her own right. Her work delves into historical events and figures, brings lesser-known stories to light, and emphasizes female voices. Her plays The Revolutionists and Silent Sky blend history, humor, and memorable moments. Gunderson also writes as an activist. In The Taming, she asks “what if a woman actually won the presidency?” Her play Natural Shocks addresses domestic and gun violence against women. She

has been the most produced playwright in the US for several years. Margot Melcon, collaborator and co-writer, brings a unique perspective and talent to their projects with her background in literature, dramaturgy, and writing. She is a keen storyteller. In Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley she weaves new narratives into the beloved world of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and captures the essence of Austen’s characters while adding fresh, engaging plotlines. As Director of New Play Development at the Marin Theatre Company for seven years, Melcon helped develop more than 30 productions, educational and marketing materials, and facilitated artist/community dialogue. This formidable creative duo have given us theatrical experiences that entertain, enlighten, and challenge. They bring historical events to life, introduce new characters into familiar stories, and explore universal themes with humor and heart. And Gunderson and Melcon have actively championed women and other underrepresented voices in theater. They have helped pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse theatrical scene and advocated for equal pay and opportunities for women in the arts. Gunderson’s and Melcon’s contributions to the theater cannot be overstated. They have resulted in compelling, thought-provoking plays that resonate with audiences around the globe.

MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY
SARAH GAMBLIN (Elizabeth Darcy) began her journey with The Naples Players in Spring 2023 with The Sound of Music. She volunteered as both a nun onstage and a dresser backstage. Her role backstage inspired her interest in the behind the scenes aspect of theater. She chose to challenge herself by volunteering as an assistant stage manager for all four shows in Summer 2023. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley will, therefore, be Sarah’s sixth show with TNP within the calendar year and she couldn’t be more thrilled. She greatly looks forward to returning backstage for TNP’s 2024 run of The Fantasticks and hopes you enjoy this show so much tonight, you return for every show hence. GIGI KIRTON (Lydia Wickham) is so thrilled to Lydia it up in this hilarious, outstanding production with such a hilarious, outstanding, supportive cast! She is currently a junior at FGCU studying vocal performance. Previous credits include When We Were Young and Unafraid, Pride and Prejudice, You Can’t Take it With You, and As You Like It. She would like to thank her friends and family (especially Jaco) for their endless love and support. “Love is my religion!”
ASHLEY KOSTEN (Jane Bingley) is thrilled to be back for her second show at TNP!
Her first production with The Naples Players was The Sound of Music as an ensemble nun and dresser backstage. She found her love for theater throughout high school and was president of her drama club. In October 2021, she graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC with an associate’s degree in Musical Theater. Since then, she’s been in Naples enjoying the sunshine! She would like to thank this amazing and talented cast and crew, as well as special thanks to her friends and family for continuing to support her. Lots of love to Carlos/Carlita :-)
ASEEM UPADHYAY (Charles Bingley) is ecstatic to be a part of Jane Austen’s beautiful Regency-era world. Trying his hardest to nail the RP down, he is nevertheless thrilled to bring these classic characters to life on stage with the rest of this beautiful cast. He was most recently seen in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame as Captain Phoebus. Other recent credits include Simon/The Game’s Afoot, Max and Peter/By The Way, Meet Vera Stark, and Paul/Saving Kitty. Additionally, he is a singer-songwriter who has performed across Southwest Florida and New York City. Delighted to be surrounded by uber-talented cast and crew, he would like to thank his family back home for their unending support. This one is for Carlos/Carlita!!! IG: @justameesa

Where It’s Performed
Premiering in 2016 at the Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley, CA, the play quickly became a beloved seasonal production, captivating audiences with its heartwarming story set in Jane Austen’s world of Pride and Prejudice. Starting with the world premiere, the play was praised for its clever blend of Austen’s beloved characters and a festive holiday theme. The play transports audiences to the Regency era while exploring contemporary themes of love, family, and personal fulfillment.
Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley has been performed at regional theaters, community theaters, and university theaters, capturing the spirit of the holidays while staying true to Austen’s world. It remains a favorite among theatergoers seeking heartwarming, entertaining entertainment at holiday time. Austen fans love to revisit beloved characters like Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in a new story, set amid the festivities of the Christmas season. The play captures the essence of Austen’s characters while giving them new depth. Additionally, the play’s focus on Mary Bennet, the sister who is often overshadowed in Pride and Prejudice, has been fascinating for many. The play shines a spotlight on Mary, offering her a chance for personal growth and romance. Audiences over decades find Mary’s story totally relatable.

MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY
W WJAT?
What Would Jane Austen Think? Jane Austen was known for her sharp wit and satirical observations of society. Her novels often surprised with comedic elements, clever dialogue, humorous situations, and her keen sense of irony. She had a knack for understanding and delighting readers with the complexities of human behavior and foibles, and her writing sparkles with subtle humor.
Given Austen’s affinity for comedy, she would no doubt appreciate the humor in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. The play remains true to the spirit of Austen’s world, placing her familiar and beloved characters and themes in a new story while adding a decidedly “Austenian” comedic flair. The play’s witty and clever dialogue and situational comedy align perfectly with Austen’s distinctive style. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley shines the spotlight directly on Mary Bennet, the sister who often receives less attention in Pride and Prejudice. It’s easy to suppose that Austen would enjoy and appreciate Mary’s journey of self-discovery. It is worth noting, though, that Austen lived a vastly different life and had her own unique perspective. She might have specific preferences or opinions that would have influenced her view of a play like Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Modern audiences can only speculate about how Austen would have felt about the play. But our speculation can be based on our knowledge of her and the themes and tone of her novels. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley pays appropriate homage to Austen’s world and her characters and incorporates humor that touches contemporary audiences. It celebrates the enduring appeal of Austen’s work while capturing Austen’s wit and charm. The play’s audiences would be right “on the money” thinking that Ms. Austen would be delighted with it!
