ORDINARY JOBS,
EXTRAORDINARY TALENT: The Heart & Passion of Local Theater
MEET BRAD GOETZ
One of the most remarkable aspects of community theater is the people—neighbors, friends, and familiar faces—who bring stories to life on stage and work tirelessly behind the scenes. They might play leading roles under the spotlight or lend their hands to sets, costumes, and props. Offstage, they’re just as likely to be your dentist, electrician, or mailman.
Take Brad Goetz, for example, who plays Max in the upcoming production of The Play That Goes Wrong at The Naples Players (TNP). Brad is not only a talented performer but also a professional artist, business owner, and—believe it or not—your friendly neighborhood mailman. In fact, he delivers mail to The Naples Players, proving that you don’t have to look far to find stars in your own community.
These individuals dedicate countless hours of time, talent, and energy to create the shows we love to watch. It’s this blend of passion and commitment that makes community theater so special and so close to home.
A transplant from Seattle, Brad moved to the Naples area nearly 20 years ago. His diverse background includes serving in the military, consulting with light industrial and manufacturing companies, building furniture and motorcycles, writing for plays and musicals, and creating magic shows. He’s even scripted a haunted house production with a cast of 50. At one time, in a single year, he performed in five shows with a number of local theaters, including The Naples Players. He even directed one of the shows.
“I’ve always loved music and theater,” said Brad. “Writing comes easily to me. I wrote a six-book nature series before I entered first grade.”
As he completed school and started working, his life took him away from the arts. After a break of more than 10 years, Brad is jumping back in. “I really enjoy film and theater. I love this form of communications. It can deeply impact an audience.”
While he did not study theater in school, he has a massive library and studies on his own.
“I like the work of it,” said Brad. “For many actors and others involved in a production, it is about the attention—the adulation. Fame is not super appealing to me. I am always about the show, and how I can help make it the very best I can be for our audience.”
Brad is excited to get back on stage with The Naples Players after a 12-year hiatus and is

diligently preparing for his role as Max. “I was attracted to play Max because he is complicated, with two different characters – it is a difficult and technical role. In the play, Max is not a very good actor. It is actually challenging to perform as a bad actor when you have acting talent.”
“The Naples Players has more capabilities and is better staffed than many professional theaters I’ve worked with. And the renovated theater with new state-of-theart sound and lighting have added to my excitement to return. I also simply enjoy the people involved. I believe this theater provides excellent productions, with their amazing quality quite often measuring up to the national tour groups. It is an honor to return to do my little part to continue moving our beloved community theater to the next level.”

Multi-talented Trio
At opening night of the original London production of The Play That Goes Wrong in England in 2012, an unusual thing happened: all three of the playwrights were in the cast!
That’s right. Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields each played one of the zany characters in their own play. Performances of the comedy, created by Britain’s Mischief Theatre company, was chock full of authors. And interestingly, the three creators have all performed in both British and American productions of the play.
The multi-dimensional involvement of these three – creation and performance - helped shape its distinctive comedic style, characterized by physical comedy, slapstick humor, and a play-within-a-play format where everything that can go wrong does.
When The Play That Goes Wrong was brought to Broadway in 2017, Lewis, Sayer, and Shields reprised their roles, sharing their comedic timing and understanding of the material to American audiences. Their participation in both the West End and Broadway productions certainly underscored their commitment to the play, but it also ensured that its humor and essence were preserved from one side of the ocean to the other.
Their performances in both countries contributed significantly to the play’s international success. And the trio’s ability to engage with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic highlighted the universal appeal of their comedy and the timeless nature of the mishaps and chaos onstage.
The cross-cultural performances added an extra layer of authenticity and expertise to each production, making The Play That Goes Wrong a beloved theatrical phenomenon globally.
FA RCE SLA P S T ICK?
Uh Oh – It’s BOTH!
We think we know; in fact, most of us are certain that we know. We’ve been exposed to slapstick and farce in comedy for most of our lives. In film, theater, television….think Milton Berle, Jackie Gleason, the Three Stooges…and on and on and on.
But, strictly speaking, there’s a real difference between the two, and each is characterized by unique comedic elements that captivate us in different ways.
SLAPSTICK has its roots in physical comedy and exaggerated actions. It relies heavily on pratfalls, visual gags, and absurd situations to generate laughter. The humor usually comes from the characters’ physical mishaps and the sheer outrageousness of their goofy predicaments. Slapstick emphasizes the visual and kinetic aspects of comedy. Think pies in the face, slipping on banana peels, doors opening and closing, and more!
FARCE , on the other hand, relies on intricate, fast-paced plots that are chock-ablock with mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and chaotic situations. Farce places a premium on witty dialogue, clever wordplay, and intricate staging. The humor in farce often comes from the characters’ attempts to navigate a complex web of misunderstandings. Timing and precision in delivery are key to successful farce, and the rapid pace keeps us amused and engaged. Farce is designed to tickle the audience’s intellect as well as their funny bone.
The Play That Goes Wrong offers both!
While the pace, crazy situations, misunderstandings, pratfalls, and misadventures with the set and lighting will keep us laughing, listen, too, for the clever mispronunciations and puns. They’re more subtle, to be sure, but they add immeasurably to the fun.

Thank You TO OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS
This past season 590 volunteers donated 50,716 hours to making Season 70 a success!
Season 70 echoed of days past when The Naples Players staged performances in schools, churches, and living rooms simply to keep the arts alive when they were between facilities or without a home base of their own.
Despite being in several locations across Naples, one thing remained united - our dedicated volunteer base .
Thank you to these amazing volunteers who continued to give of their time and talents this past season. We could not have done it without you.
