Welcome home to SEASON 71
We are delighted to welcome you back to our highly regarded 5th Avenue South venue! The first phase of our recent $22 million transformation was completed swiftly and with minimal disruption to our programming, allowing us to continue engaging with our community through the arts while we temporarily relocated for Season 70.
Now that we are back home, I want to welcome you to tour our new facilities, meet our staff, and engage with our passionate and skilled volunteers. The volunteers you see on stage tonight are just a few of the many individuals who contribute to the success of TNP. This is your theater. Explore it, experience it, and should you feel compelled to - please support it. As a community theatre setting the stage for arts accessibility nationwide, we deeply appreciate your patronage and attendance at this evening’s performance.

SPOTLIGHT
SHELLEY GOTHARD
(CLAIRE GANZ)
In the original TNP production of Rumors in 2011, Shelley Gothard appeared briefly at the end of the second act. She spent most of her time backstage, where she controlled the house lights, performed several of the sound effects, and helped set the stage for the second act. Thirteen
Shelley appearing in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder
years later, Shelley has taken a much larger, more visible lead role as Claire Ganz, who she describes as the queen of the club and a gossip. “I was drawn to audition as Claire because she’s smart and a bit of a smartass,” said Shelley. “But she is loyal to her friends and family.”
Shelley was only 6 years old when she was in her first theatre production. She took a long hiatus before again exploring volunteer opportunities with The Naples Players 14 years ago. A veterinarian in Naples with no local family, she realized she needed to find an outlet for her free time and energy. “The Naples Players has become my second home – my second family. I know many of the volunteers and enjoy making friends and acquaintances among the new volunteers. I always enjoy my time, even though it is hard work.”
I have personally seen TNP grow and evolve, just as I have.
– SHELLEY GOTHARD
As an actor, Shelly shares that her favorite musical experience on stage was in Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
“The cast and crew were terrific. I also had a blast with The Game’s Afoot, playing Inspector Goring. I would have to say, though, my best role was last year as Veta Louise in Harvey. It is such a great play and a special character.”
In addition to performing, Shelley has been a TNP volunteer in many different roles over the years, including serving as stage manager, dresser, part of the sound crew, and backstage crew. Now, you can also find her on many weekends working “front of house” with the concessions crew, greeting patrons and serving beverages from behind the bar.
“It has been fun comparing and contrasting the acting, personalities, and direction of the first production of Rumors with this one,” she said.
Shelley encourages everyone to consider getting involved in TNP as a way to grow personally and professionally. “Acting gives you a boost of self confidence in whatever you do in the other roles in your life. Also, the theatre family is a diverse group of people, so it can definitely enhance people skills that are needed in work and in life.”
And, she adds, you don’t need an invitation. “Just show up! Everyone is welcome. We’ll find a place for you to let your talents shine.”
READERS THEATRE @ TNP
What is Readers Theatre? Readers Theatre performances are a much more intimate and relaxed experience for the audience and performers. They feature a series of both full-length and one-act plays, dramas, and classic works performed with scripts in hand and without props or costumes. Performances are an evening of play readings chosen, directed, and cast by the volunteer Readers Theatre committee. We welcome you to join us at one of these future performances. Tickets are $25 each and available at the Box Office or online.

This past season 591 volunteers donated 50,715 hours to making Season 70 a success!
Season 70 echoed of days past when The Naples Players staged performances in schools, churches and living rooms simply to keep the arts alive when they were between facilities or without a home base of their own.
Despite being in several locations across Naples, one thing remained united - our dedicated volunteer base .
Thank you to these amazing volunteers who continued to give of their time and talents this past season. We could not have done it without you.

A Secret?Well-kept
Snedens Landing, setting for Rumors, is a very real place. It’s nestled on the banks of the Hudson River in Rockland County, NY, 12 miles north of the George Washington Bridge - a picturesque hamlet with a rich history and a reputation for attracting celebrities seeking to escape from the chaos of city life. Its attractions feature natural beauty, artistic inspiration, and the allure of privacy that has drawn celebrities for decades.
The Landing, as the locals call it, traces its history back to the early 18th century when Dutch settlers established the area as a trading post. Over time, it evolved into a small but vibrant community with its stunning views of the river. A remote yet convenient haven for actors, directors, and musicians far from Hollywood or Broadway, Snedens Landing offered seclusion and a retreat where creativity could flourish without interruption.
The Landing incorporates about 100 houses with the informal, romantic “vibe” of books in an antiquarian shop. The place has long attracted cultural lions. Katharine Sergeant Angell, The New Yorker magazine’s fiction editor who married Charlotte’s Web author E.B. White in 1929, began renting there in the 1920s when it was an artists’ summer colony. So did John Dos Passos, Aaron Copland, and Noël Coward.
Among other celebrities who have called Snedens Landing home was legendary actor and director Orson Welles who sought refuge there during the tumultuous periods of his career. His presence added to the area’s allure, drawing other artists and intellectuals to its tranquil shores.
Snedens Landing has continued to attract prominent figures from the entertainment world. Al Pacino, Diane Sawyer, and Mikhail Baryshnikov have all reportedly owned properties in the area. Scarlett Johansson bought an ivy-covered colonial up the hill from Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch. Jane Pauley and Garry Trudeau are reported to own a house in the woods. The presence of these and other giants brings often unwanted press attention to The Landing, but it’s still a sought after destination where charming homes, winding streets, and breathtaking views still captivate residents and visitors alike. The allure of celebrity may come and go, but the timeless appeal of Snedens Landing as a sanctuary of beauty and tranquility endures.
No Holds Barred
Neil Simon wrote Rumors, his 23rd play, in 1988. More than 35 years later it’s still speaking directly to audiences. This biting, hilarious comedy “takes no prisoners” as it explores themes of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and social class.
By the time Simon wrote Rumors, he was a well-established playwright known for his wit and humor. He had already experienced considerable popular success and was written when Simon of both personal and professional observations inspired his work. on Simon’s life and social dynamics and
Rumors engages audiences with Simon’s trademark humor and keen observations of human behavior. On the surface, it’s a fast-paced comedy of errors with memorable characters and witty dialogue. It’s a thoroughly entertaining, satisfying, and delightful theater experience.
But wait; there’s more!
Observing audiences watching the play, it’s not unusual to hear laughter quickly followed by silence: laughter because the lines are so hilarious, silence because they hit so close to home. And that’s why it has endured. We are kept laughing from start to finish while Simon simultaneously gives us more than a teaspoon of insight into human nature and societal dynamics. Rumors’ fast-paced dialogue, its plot filled with misunderstandings and absurd situations, and audiences that find the play irresistible have kept the play on stage for decades.
Writing Rumors: Neil Simon in His Own Words
There is an old theatrical saying that goes: ‘’Dying is easy; comedy is hard.’’ Mr. Simon is a variation on that theme. For him, at least back in the late 1980s, comedy was easy; life was hard. In an interview for the New York Times in 1988, famed playwright Neil Simon talked about the challenges of writing Rumors at a trying time in his own life.
‘’I was going through some difficult times,’’ Simon said. ‘’This marriage I was in was breaking up. My daughter’s husband was killed in an automobile accident. It seemed like rough going. And I said I wanted to work, because work is always a cathartic process for me, and I thought it would be really good just to get into a comedy.’’
‘’I wrote about 40 pages of Rumors in a suite at a hotel on the East Side of Manhattan. Generally speaking, I think I always start at these plays a couple of years before I actually get to write them. I wanted to do something completely different. I really was in the mood to sort of go back and write just out-and-out funny, because it’s what I felt I needed in my own life. So I thought it would be fine just to go into rehearsal with a comedy, with a farce, even though they are the hardest to write.’’
Simon revealed that it was the hardest play he’d ever written, more difficult than the previous three plays combined. Rumors “can never let up for a second.” he said. “The action of the story always has to keep moving, and generally at an almost frenetic pace. Just the geography of it, trying to figure out where the 10 people are in the house, is almost a geometric puzzle. I had to keep going back and reading and seeing where the people were and where I left them.”
The result, of course, is a wildly funny farce with Simon’s trademark quick wit, combined with broad physical comedy and improbable situations - a combination sure to please audiences.
