VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
JIM CORSICA
Celebrating 25 years at The Naples Players
By Lauren SpeirsOnesuch volunteer is on stage tonight in Southern Comforts! Jim Corsica is celebrating 25 years of volunteering at The Naples Players and we couldn’t be more grateful to have him back again and again. Jim’s first show with us was The Fantasticks at the Kon Tiki Theater on Davis Boulevard - the old movie theater that previously housed TNP before moving to the Sugden on Fifth Avenue. “One of the things I’ve been able to do since coming to The Naples
room of Henry and Mary Watkins in 1953.
unique. Many have been
Players is check a lot of things off of my bucket list. Back in 2004, I auditioned and got cast as Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls and it was one of the thrills of my life!”
The bucket list continues to be checked off with Southern Comforts. “This play is my first two character play. I made a commitment to myself around 2001 to do things that also represent a challenge in some way. Each play or musical I’ve done has something unique about it.” Speaking of Southern Comforts, Jim is excited about all of his fellow on stage and backstage counterparts. “I was so happy to hear Alyssa Haney is our stage manager - she is fierce backstage!”
Jim was born and raised in Rochester, New York and spent over a decade in both Ohio and then Wisconsin. Before retiring, Jim was a high

school math teacher and when he moved to Naples in 1996, he taught at The Community School for five years and then Gulf Coast High School for five years. Jim arrived in Naples with plenty of acting experience from the Racine Theatre Guild and The Lakeside Players, both in Wisconsin. “The theater in Racine was modeled after the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis so I learned to act in the round (audience on three sides of the stage). Coming here and acting on a proscenium stage (audience on one side of the stage) felt like a vacation.”
With so much time spent at The Naples Players, it’s tough to decide which plays were Jim’s favorite. “It’s a tie between Guys and Dolls, Other People’s Money, Over the River and Through the Woods, and Deathtrap. Over the River was the most personal role I ever did because I played an Italian grandfather and it reminded me of my own family (which had two Italian grandfa thers) so I had lots to draw from for the charac ter. In Other People’s Money, I played a corporate raider, deconstructing companies and selling off the parts for a profit. I said to the director when I auditioned, ‘I know this guy!’ In the final scene, I had a four-and-a-half page monologue as if I was talking to the stakeholders; when you listen
to his reasoning it makes a whole lot of sense, besides the fact that it’s the death of the facto ry. Guys and Dolls was my first Broadway-style musical with twenty-five plus people in it. My friend came to see it and said, ‘you never told me you could sing!’ and I said, ‘you didn’t ask.’ The fact that I can do musicals has been a lot of work and a lot of fun. Deathtrap was the first play to break my heart - I didn’t get cast the first time I auditioned in Wisconsin but then wound up performing it on two separate occasions, one of which was with The Naples Players.”
Jim has graced our stages several times, but he has also joined the backstage volunteer family! “In Mary Poppins, I was moving set pieces and in Les Misérables, I rolled the barricade over
I love it. It’s the primary volunteer activity that I do, although I think I get more out of it than I put into it! The bottom line is that I’ve met some wonderful people in 25 years.

my left big toe! I’ve worked backstage probably ten times. It’s my other favorite thing to do. I think I have about three black running crew shirts at home!” Jim also auditioned for Mike and Judith (Santos) and took part in Stage 2 Improv for three years.
“I keep coming back because of the wonderful people, some I’ve worked with over and over again. Some just one show and then they’re gone. I’ve watched some of the kids move onto bigger and better things. Lana Love is on The Voice right now (October 2022) and she was my daughter in All Shook Up maybe ten years ago!”
All of us at The Naples Players are grateful to every single volunteer and we are humbled to have wonderful people like Jim volunteer their time for 25 years and counting - Thank you, Jim!

GET TO KNOW ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEER USHERS!
You might recognize TNP Volunteer from our recent production of Mary Poppins where he played Admiral Boom; or maybe he has recently welcomed you into our theater as an usher! Either way, we’re delighted to celebrate this great volunteer, Harry McCartney, by sharing his story with you…
Harry was born in Mobile, Alabama but grew up in Japan (yes, he still remembers how to speak the language!) because his father was a civil ser vant. After finishing college, Harry went into
the Navy and was in the Seabee Battalion. For those of us who don’t know, the Seabee nick name comes from the initial letters “CB” from the words “Construction Battalion.” While serving in Vietnam, his twelve man team traveled all over the country building shelters for US Marines.
After serving in the military, Harry started his own business as a contractor in Anna Maria Island. “We built major structures - built the foundation and laid the concrete before build ing the house or complex.” Before volunteering for The Naples Players, Harry worked for other important local organizations - a monkey boat captain for the Naples Zoo; a contractor for the Rookery Bay Department of Environmen tal Protection where he maintained 250,000 acres with tractors, boats, and all kinds of heavy equipment; and he was also a certified nursing assistant.
An important part of Harry’s story is his wife Debron (aka, Deb) whom he volunteers with at The Naples Players. “I met Deb in 1991 and we
got married in 1992 - she was a flight attendant at the time. We just celebrated our 30th wed ding anniversary.” Not only did Deb introduce Harry to volunteering at TNP but they also traveled the world together. They’ve been every where from Moscow to Turkey!
Deb says, “In 2002, Harry and I bought a condo on 3rd Avenue South mainly for the location. It’s walking distance to 5th Avenue South and we knew we wanted to be a part of The Naples Players. My first gig at TNP was in 2004 when I was cast in Mama Drama in the Tobye Studio where I played several characters. I knew Har ry had a lot of stage presence and couldn’t wait for him to join in on the fun I was having at The Naples Players! In 2007, Harry was able to vol unteer and he was cast in his first show The Smell of the Kill and I was the sound board operator for that show. It was the first time we were able to volunteer, work, and play together! We had a blast and we’re still enjoying being a part of TNP ever since.”
All of us at The Naples Players are so grateful Harry received encouragement from his wife to join our theatre family! He says, “Deb told me about the theatre - she got me hooked on it! Initially I did Readers Theatre (script-in-hand plays) but I wanted to learn so I tried not to rely on the script too much. I’ve done just about ev erything - fly rail, lights, ushering, and backstage hand. Whenever I wasn’t cast in the show I went and got something else to do offstage. In Fiddler on the Roof, I was a Russian cossack dancer and did all of those tough dances - I even jumped off a table! My all time favorite show was The Pro ducers. I played six parts and in one scene I went
out into the crowd and danced with audience members. It was a hoot - a lot of fun.”
Maybe because of his military background, Har ry found himself slightly typecast. “I did get cast as a cop a lot. In Oklahoma, I was the sheriff. In The Producers, I was a police officer. The only embarrassing moment I had on stage was when I tripped coming in the door in The Producers!”
Everyone at The Naples Players is grateful for a volunteer like Harry and we’re always happy to hear that the feeling is mutual. “I’ve done 13 musicals here! The young kids have really taken Something Rotten! to a whole other level - they are just Broadway.”
Thank you for being an integral part of our TNP family, Harry! To join in on the fun of volunteering at The Naples Players, call Pamela Larkin Caruso at 239-434-7340.
I’ve never had a bad time at TNP.
Everyone is really supportive and it’s just an enjoyable group to be with.

Kathleen Clark Dixie Carter Hal HolbrookProbably For Many! ?
It’s an oft-told tale: two widowed adults living on their own meet under mundane circumstances; neither is “on the prowl” for a new mate. Different backgrounds, different geography, different personalities – and yet they are drawn together.
Amanda and Gus make their way toward each other physically and emotionally as the drama unfolds; obviously attracted to each other, obviously tentative, and (at least for Gus) more than a little bit self-protective.
Few couples on the verge of cohabitation can avoid the age-old ‘moving-van negotiation’: how much and whose stuff will fill their shared home, how will the much-loved but disparate possessions of two households fit into one, and when/if to compromise or stand firm. That debate is standard fare.
As is the question of where they will live: his house or hers? A ‘neu tral’ residence? In his town, hers, or neither? Yes, a truck brought Amanda’s belongings to Gus’ nearly empty house and yes, she insisted on holding on to absolutely everything; but the play doesn’t gain its strength and universality by resolving any of the other issues.
Playwright Clark fills their funny, awkward, and enchanting romance with sweet surprise and unpredictable tribulation.
Told with warmth and perceptive humor, Southern Comforts is an affecting, late-in-life journey of compromise and rejuve nation, of emotional risk, and reaping the rewards of willingness to change.
As the audience, we aren’t concerned about whether these two retirement-age newlyweds can actually live together in peace and harmony, but whether or not they’ll rest that way for eternity.
