THE REMAINDER OF OUR
68TH SEASON
Legendary baker, Della, finds herself in a true crisis of conscience and faith when her late best friend’s daughter, Jen, asks her to make a wedding cake for her upcoming marriage…to another woman. Family and ideology collide in this touching play in which the main characters have to face their differences and work through them. There are no clear answers to life’s toughest questions, and this play invites audiences to join Della on a journey of curiosity and humanity.
FEB 02 - FEB 27 2022
Join young Jane and Michael Banks on a journey into glittering worlds and you may just find yourself levitating out of your seat to dance with “Step in Time!” With all the nostalgia of the 1964 film, Mary Poppins says “Practically perfect people never permit sentiment to muddle their feelings,” but adults will find the show irresistibly full of reminiscences.

MAR 30 - APR 24 2022
Sarah Treem, writer of the edge-of-your-seat Netflix series House of Cards, created this powerful play about an unassuming, cozy bed and breakfast that moonlights as a battered women’s shelter. Agnes lives on a remote island off the coast of Washington with her 16-year-old daughter where she upholds an ironclad set of rules and boundaries to protect her B&B guests and the women she shelters. Set in the 1970’s, the story examines the harsh realities of life before Roe v. Wade, before the Violence Against Women Act, and before women had places to turn in times of distress. Smart and exciting, it will leave you on the edge of your seat with a renewed appreciation of a woman’s rights. S P O N S O R E D B Y : Terry Libby & Larry Siegel

GROWING UP WITH
THE NAPLES PLAYERS By Lauren Speirs
For Kristin Cassidy, The Naples Players has always been a home away from home. Kristin Cassidy is no stranger to The Naples Players. In 1975, she was in TNP’s production of The King and I at Gulfview Middle School. “Back then, it was a real do-it-yourself environment with your mom making all your costumes - we hadn’t even moved into the Kon-Tiki (movie theater) yet.” After that, she didn’t grace our stage until 2001 when she appeared in Sweet Charity. Kristin decided to audition for Sweet Charity to prove a point to her daughter Wylie. At the time, Wylie was taking violin lessons but was terrified to perform.
husband didn’t even realize she acted. With no babysitter, Kristin says that Wylie “grew up in this theater. We used to joke that there was a ‘Wylie Cassidy Memorial Step’ because she would just take a nap on the stairs during rehearsals.” Kristin went to Emory College and did theatre all throughout. Afterwards, she acted in a few shows in Atlanta at the Neighborhood Playhouse. She laughs about appearing in A Chorus Line where, “they made me take the taps off my shoes and just wear character shoes...I do a great dance face - you would think I was killing it!”
“I convinced the (TNP) staff to let Wylie
Soon enough, Kristin realized she needed a ‘real job.’ “I call it the washer-dryer gene. I realized I wanted to be able to afford a washer-dryer! I became a restaurant manager and a cook. It’s like being on a pirate ship - a lot like theatre. There’s a lot that happens backstage that no one knows about!”
It had been such a long time since Kristin was involved in theatre that, when she auditioned for Sweet Charity, her then-
Kristin got married, had Wylie, and moved back home to Naples, where she started a successful career in real estate. Initially, she was an office manager for Premier Sotheby’s
“I wanted to show her that you don’t die when you go on stage and audition.” sit in on auditions. To be honest, it never really worked - Wylie was perfectly happy volunteering backstage and eventually switched to the guitar!”

Kristin found that The Naples Players was very different from her Gulfview Middle School experience.
“The professional staff here are just amazing - the miracles that Dot (Auchmoody) and the costume shop creates are mind boggling. We look great, we sound great...and the orchestra, my goodness!” With a daughter who also volunteered long term at TNP, Kristin is impressed with all the opportunities for young people at the theater now. “I’m so thrilled with all the backstage programs here now. There are stage manager classes now and you can really expand your opportunities in the theater.
“It’s amazing to sing and dance but encouraging the kids to get the backstage skills and experience allows them to make a living from theater outside of performing.”

When she can’t be onstage, Kristin loves being a dresser backstage. “As an actor, you’re really able to think along with the person you’re dressing. You know when it’s time to shut up or when it’s time to hound them. I dressed Elizabeth Marcantonio for Gypsy and I drove her crazy! She had a lot to put on. I would stand behind her chair and say, ‘do you want to get ready now?’... then the ten minute call would come…’how about now?!’” Kristin says she “loves doing the shows.”
“That’s the thing that I love - I can have a day job and still do theatre. These people practically raised my daughter. It’s a truly spectacular thing to be a part of.” Interested in volunteering? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players! Volunteers wanting to work backstage have options to commit to time frames ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 weeks. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy. Welcome back to live theater!
E
We have all been through a tough year and have probably come to value how precious and sensitive our relationships are with friends and family. This play conjures up all the commonality we share and makes us remember just how strong we are. As we get older it becomes more difficult to meet new people and try new things, but it is always possible! Given the right support system we can do just about anything - and at any age. Having traveled this journey myself through this past year, I can attest to this. Tonight, I invite you to meet four lovely women who - for various reasons - are trying to re-invent the second half of their lives and on their journey become the best of friends…a reminder to live every day to its fullest and spend more time with the people you love! Enjoy,

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT By Lauren Speirs
5 Questions with TNP volunteer Jules Branche
1
How did you learn about volunteering at The Naples Players?
Growing up, theatre and music were my passion and it had been many years since I had even been on a stage. I adore old movies and had read online that there was going to be a showing of Casablanca, one of my favorite movies, here at the theater. Naturally, I was thrilled and had to come see the movie. Scott (the house manager) greeted me at the entrance and made the experience such a ‘wow’ moment. As I left that night, I stopped by and asked Scott, “does this theater also have live performances?” He said, “yes” and went on to share more with me about the community of The Naples Players. I was inspired and began to follow the TNP website and look for opportunities to volunteer and be part of live theatre again.
2
What duties or tasks are you working on right now at TNP?
I have the pleasure of volunteering with the stage management team here. Currently, I am stage managing The Savannah Sipping Society, and my tasks include: rehearsal reports, production team correspondence, delivering updates to the cast and director, running rehearsals 5 nights a week, and finally, being a positive and grateful volunteer every time I enter the doors at TNP. 32
TNP BACKSTAGE
skills have you have gained 3 What from volunteering with TNP? I have learned to adapt quickly with different personalities. The culture at The Naples Players is very welcoming. Everyone comes from a different walk of life and is able to work together for the love of theatre. I have also learned a tremendous amount about backstage work. That includes: lights, sound, props, and costumes, as well as how all of these moving parts work cohesively in order to create success. I was fortunate enough to enroll into Cole Butcher’s Stage Management class and that was so helpful to see all the aspects of putting a show together. I knew right away that is where I wanted to be - working with the cast and production team to create magic.

are your future ambitions for theatre? 5 What
I have made so many friends here and I am beyond proud of all the successes each one of them has achieved. Learning so much backstage has been delightful - moving a set piece, bringing in a fly, helping an actor dress, and handing off a prop. Most importantly, I love to do line notes! Also, the team here is full of heart and honesty. I drive here from North Naples as often as I can to volunteer not only because I have a passion for live theatre but also because The Naples Players is my home away from home.
I would love to continue to be a part of the stage management team here at TNP. I will continue to watch live theatre and be a part of it. If the Naples Players ever needed my assistance for any projects I would be more than happy to assist. I will always give my time to The Naples Players whether it is backstage crew, assistant stage managing, line notes, usher, assist with an event - I am here to help! This is a theater that cares and has built a culture of love. I am proud to be part of it and will continue to help in any aspect I may.

CAST BIOS GERRIE BENZING.......... ( Jinx) is excited to be back at The Naples Players after appearing as Ruth in Calendar Girls. Some of her favorite past roles include Sheree/The Dixie Swim Club, Bella/Angel Street, Veta/Harvey, and Christine/The Bad Seed. When she’s not at the theater, Gerrie works as the Creative Director of Monologues4kids.com, helping performing kids all over the world. She wants to thank her director and fellow castmates for this wonderful adventure and her dog Bailey for putting up with her rehearsal schedule. And as Jinx says, let’s all “Bring on the Happy.”
KRISTIN CASSIDY........ (R a nd a) i s g l a d to b e back on stage with new old friends. K ristin has performed in many shows at TNP, most recently as Rosie in Mamma Mia!, and when not onstage she can be found happily rushing around backstage as a dresser or stagehand. Much love to my Scott (he’s been unsupervised, poor boy!).

TNP BACKSTAGE
RUTH JOHNSON............ (Marlafaye) is pleased to be making her second appearance at TNP after debuting as Grandma Rosie in The Wedding Singer. She has performed on dozens of stages across the country for over 40 years. Favorite roles include Marie Dindon/La Cage aux Folles, Sally Plummer/Follies, and the title role in Mame. Thanks to Betty for the role, my fabulous cast mates for the laughs, and my husband, Al, for his love and support.
PEGGY MONSON........... (Dot) makes her second appearance on The Naples Players stage after her role as Chris in Calendar Girls earlier this year. Peggy continues to be amazed and inspired by the dedication and talent of her fellow volunteers on and off the stage in the creation of theatre magic. She is thankful for the loyal support of those in the audience and staff members who make it all possible.

PROFESSIONALISM
IS A MINDSET By Lauren Speirs
Originally from the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Ruth Johnson moved to Naples only two years ago but says she has found her “forever home” at TNP. With a husband in engineering, Ruth Johnson has moved around a lot throughout the years. Two years ago, they moved to Naples and into their twenty-third home together! Ruth first appeared at The Naples Players as Grandma Rosie in The Wedding Singer. “I loved it - it got me out of the house and I loved Grandma, she was such a little smart aleck! And so is Marlafaye (her character in The Savannah Sipping Society). Marlafaye is one of the four women of a certain age who are having to start life all over again from scratch. I can relate to each of these characters because I have started my life over and over again.” Ruth is certainly no stranger to the theatre.
“I started doing theatre in 1973 - the bug bit and there’s no going back!” “I’ve spent the last number of years basically doing every job in theatre. I haven’t designed lights but I’ve hung them, focused them, ran a spotlight for a week, and built an entire set by myself.” Her first real professional gig was at the Medora Musical, a 3,000 seat amphitheater. She was twenty-four years old and the show

was sold out for twelve weeks straight. “People would stop me on the street there for autographs and photos. When I went back to Minneapolis people said, ‘you stayed where?!’ and had never heard of the place. Trying to make a living on the stage can be super fun but it’s up and down all the time. One second you’re thinking you’re all that and then you realize that you’re not!” From there, Ruth was directed by Mitzi Hamilton in La Cage aux Folles (the play that the 1996 film The Birdcage was based off of). Ruth explains that Mitzi was famously Michael Bennett’s inspiration: “The Val character in A Chorus Line is based on Mitzi’s real life.” Ruth also appeared in the 1994 NBC movie of the week, Her Hidden Truth. Ruth tired of repeating roles in musicals and found herself moving in a different direction in the theatre. “I’ve done a lot of musicals in my day and there aren’t too many parts in a musical for a woman my age that I haven’t done already over and over again. Once I realized this, I moved into directing.” During rehearsals for The Savannah Sipping Society, Ruth has to fight her director’s reflexes. “This is the type of show I loved to direct - a small production with a lot of slapstick. We had our first rehearsal and THE SAVANNAH SIPPING SOCIETY

RUTH
JOHNSON someone asked a question and I had to bite my tongue because there can only be one director! Betty (Nordstrom) is amazing. All of the women, including my three fellow cast members, director, stage manager (Jules Branche), and assistant stage manager (Nancy Hayer), are so talented. The process has been cohesive and smooth as silk!” There’s no doubt about Ruth’s impressive resume in all aspects of theatre, on and off the stage. She says, “theater is its own world. It’s as if we’re all from the island of misfit toys. It’s my own little world but it’s my tribe and I’m sticking with them!”

Even though Ruth has not been at The Naples Players very long, she is already impressed with the level of professionalism.
“My first impression of a theater tells me a lot and when I walked out of auditions for The Wedding Singer, I had such a positive attitude.“ “They kept us up in dance auditions for forty-five minutes and one of the other dancers was Dominic Young. He was so kind and so sweet and I was really impressed with someone his age to give so much sympathy to someone my age.”

PROFESSIONALISM IS A MINDSET Continued From Page 41 For Ruth, it doesn’t end with the audition process: she was amazed from start to finish. “Dawn (Lebrecht Fornara, director and choreographer The Wedding Singer) and Charlie (Fornara, musical director of The Wedding Singer) were fabulous to work with and Cole (Butcher, stage manager of The Wedding Singer) is such an asset to this theater. I’m so grateful to Dawn and now Betty for giving me the opportunity to earn the respect of others who have been at this theater for well over a decade. I would love to sit at a table with those people as an equal. I’m hoping this is my forever home theater.” The Naples Players is a volunteer organization so everyone you see on stage is donating their time to their community (as well as your ushers, bartenders, and everyone you don’t see in the backstage crew). Ruth still insists that
“professionalism is an attitude, not a paycheck so I still call it work because I’m committed to it and I want to do a good job.”
“I love it here. The fact that so many people have been so supportive is just wonderful and everyone gets along.”
“In the eight months since walking in these doors for the first time, I have fallen in love with everyone here. In fact, I look forward to watching my grandchildren grow up on TNP stages.” Are you interested in joining our TNP family of volunteers? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players! Volunteers have options to choose their own schedule or commit to short time frames. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy.
