PEGGY MONSON'S RETURN TO THEATRE

Peggy Monson is no stranger to theatre. In her early 20’s, she had double majored in Theatre and English Literature and went on to grad school to study Communications. Her dream was to be a writer; possibly a theatre or movie critic. However, upon arrival in NYC, Peggy realized it “wasn’t in the stars.” Around the same time, life happened and she needed to be the provider. This led her straight to Wall Street and investment banking. Even this move, which some might call a drastic career change, she points out still runs parallel to theatre: “In sales it’s all about telling a story.” After 20 years in NYC, Peggy retired and moved to sunny Naples 5 years ago. She initially wasn’t sure what she would do with all of her time. Luckily, Peggy was invited to The Naples Player’s Annual Gala by a friend. “I was hugged and kissed by Frankenstein!” (TNP was performing

12

TNP BACKSTAGE

Young Frankenstein that season). She was impressed with the fabulous gala and the young artists from KidzAct who performed that night. Peggy was hooked and immediately thought “how can I get more involved around here?” and marched straight down to 5th Avenue to fill out a volunteer form. She quickly started her board advisory relationship with TNP and simultaneously started taking TNP’s Readers Theatre classes. “These classes are designed for those who want to be involved in a production but maybe don’t want to be on stage.” She loved her experiences with the TNP faculty and had the feeling that her life was “just starting” when she returned to her youthful acting passion. Peggy appreciates how well TNP connects with other organizations in the area. “Bryce has really improved those links,” speaking about TNP’s Executive Artistic Director Bryce Alexander,

“and even COVID brought everyone in the community closer together.” She is amazed at how The Naples Players was able to adapt and find safe, sensitive, and creative ways to power through COVID. As far as Calendar Girls goes, Peggy will be tackling one of the leading roles, Chris Harper, and she’s most excited to work with this team of talented women to bring this inspiring story to life. “This play has everything: comedy, passion, and 6 crazy old ladies!”

The overarching theme of love and friendship in the story always comes back into the forefront; “Even when the women disagree and fight, their love for each other is huge.” This will be Peggy’s very first ‘big’ performance with The Naples Players so she is looking forward to seeing it from the other side. “I’ve been involved in this capacity with volunteering; being an audience member, and donating and now the lens is totally turned around! I get to see everything from this new perspective and feel like I’m fulfilling that overall experience about what the theatre is all about.” She’s also hoping she doesn’t have any costume malfunctions...

Break from Reality

BALANCING WORK & LIFE THROUGH ART

Former Wall Street financial professional Brad Brenner has been acting with The Naples Players (TNP) since 2015. He originally started honing his craft in childhood, and carried on through his college theatre program; but later on life became “mostly work, work, work” in NYC. Brad had a brief break from TNP when he went to work in Asia but didn’t waste any time getting back onstage upon returning to Naples. He and his wife both perform with the company and their first encounter with TNP consisted of an awesome tour given by one of the theatre’s staff. They were taken by how professional the staff and facilities are. Soon after, their first volunteer experience began with Catch Me If

16

TNP BACKSTAGE

You Can when they were crew workers. They could see just how talented and dedicated all of the costume and set shops were. "Everything is top quality and they really do it right. This platform really allows you to do your thing well." Brad observed right away that it’s more than just shows. All of the resources the theatre has are put into the community for people who can really benefit. Take the KidzAct actors, for example. “This theatre program gives kids the opportunity to develop with professional adults. There’s a synergy there; everyone is learning from each other.” A seasoned TNP actor, Brad will tell you that the incredible sets make the acting experience second to none here.

CALENDAR GIRLS

Brad Brenner performs in TNP's production of My Fair Lady

“When you walk onto the set you feel the part."

My Fair Lady had a two story house that moved back and forth; I could feel myself developing that character more than if you just had a desk and a chair.” Along with the larger-than-life sets is the overall acting environment at The Naples Players. “There are no prima donnas here. Most of the time, half the cast had been a lead previously but they are excited to do ensemble work, too. There’s a great synergy and camaraderie and there’s never an instance of ‘I can’t believe so and so got the part.’ Everyone is so professional. During Chicago, one actor told us he wanted to spoof in the last scene of the final performance….we all looked at him and said ‘Dear God no! You’ll never work here again!’”

particular play is the “potential for messages.” Brad’s hoping to affect the audience most when he reads the famous poetry that his character John writes about the women of Yorkshire. “Bryce talks about making people get out of their lives for a while,” he said, speaking of Bryce Alexander, TNP Executive Artistic Director and Calendar Girls Director. After the unpredictable year that 2020 was, Brad and the rest of the cast are enjoying the opportunity to be on stage and out of their day-to-day lives for a while to become the endearing cast of Calendar Girls.

At the forefront of his mind for Calendar Girls is the fact that he’s “dead by page 30.” What he’s most excited about for this

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT

Tim F rth Firth was born in Frodsham, England and spent much of his time at school writing songs. But shortly before going off to Cambridge, he took a course where he was required to write dialogue. That’s when he decided to become a writer. After Cambridge, Firth was invited to meet Alan Ayckbourn and was commissioned to write a play. His one-act play was a success and led to the commissioning of a full-length play from Ayckbourn, Neville’s Island, which later transferred to London’s renowned West End. The play has been seen around the world and has been in almost continuous production since its premiere. Along with his father, Gordon, Firth created a children’s audio book that later became a hugely successful TV series subsequently named one of the Greatest Children’s TV Shows of All Time. And the stage version of Firth’s TV movie The Flint Street Nativity became hugely successful.

Calendar Girls, adapted by Firth from his own film, found favor with audiences across the UK during its 2008/09 tour, and in the process broke the all-time British box office record for a play and continued to sell out during its West End residency. In 2010, the hit comedy embarked on a UK tour and has since been produced worldwide.

26

TNP BACKSTAGE

WINTER 2020

2013 marked the premiere of Firth’s first solo musical, This Is My Family, for which he wrote book, lyrics, and music. It premiered in June 2013 and subsequently went on a UK national tour. The show won the UK Theatre Award for Best New Musical. The Girls directed by Firth and cowritten with Gary Barlow opened in 2017 and was nominated for three Olivier Awards. As Calendar Girls: The Musical, it had a national tour in 2018. In 2017, Firth’s new musical The Band premiered at the Manchester Opera House, prior to a national tour, moving to the West End in 2018. Tim’s film credits include Calendar Girls (2002) that won a British Comedy Award and Kinky Boots (2004), Best International Film, Florida Film Festival.

Q &A

WITH

How did you first hear of the Calendar

rth

Girls stor y?

Ironically, my mum cut a piece out of the paper when the story first broke. Her interest was pricked not only by the story but by the fact it took place in the village where, for the last 40 years, we had been going on holiday.

What challenges were there in adapting the story for the stage? To avoid the structure becoming linear and stringy I felt the answer was to keep a limit on locations. Fortunately, there was an obvious location - the village hall; this kept the focus where it needed to be…on the women. Instead of the women going out to the world, the world came to the women.

What are the special or memorable moments in the play? The stage show grew over several years before I finally settled on the printed text. That’s what I love about theatre - the ability to hone and refine. There is however always the fear you may eventually whittle your totem pole down to a toothpick. There were about five scenes in the original show that gradually got phased out including when a pair of hikers stumbled across the girls in the sunflowers. The WOW wreath moment came to me three years after the show had been running in the UK, when I was sitting in the stalls watching the Australian rehearsals.

WHAT IS THE

Women’s

Institute

The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in the UK in 1915 to help encourage women to provide agricultural support to rural communities that were struggling as a result of the First World War. By the time members passed the first resolution in 1918, there were already 12,000 members in 700 Women’s Institutes (WI) scattered across the country. Today, there are almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 WIs and the campaigns have broadened significantly, addressing a whole host of contemporary social issues that directly affect member’s communities. Current key campaigns include Make Time for Mental Health, Time to Talk about Organ Donation, and More Midwives, which aims to combat the chronic shortage of midwives in the UK.

BIOGR APHIES

Jo Atkinson (Marie) first joined The Naples Players in 1977. Her favorite roles with TNP (in that century) were Eliza/My Fair Lady and Corie/Barefoot in the Park. More recently, she has enjoyed being a part of the ensemble of Love, Loss and What I Wore and Always a Bridesmaid. Love and thanks to all her family for their support of “Grandma’s” need to be creative – especially her husband’s patience with The British Invasion on the homefront! Gerrie Benzing ( Ruth) is thrilled to be making her acting debut at T he Naples Player s. She recently appeared as Theresa in The Studio Players production of Circle Mirror Transformation. She is very active in theater in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area and has appeared in Miss Witherspoon, Best Man, and Play On at the Lab Theater, Maid Marion and The Marriage Counselor at Theater Conspiracy, The Full Monty at New Phoenix Theater, and numerous productions at the Cultural Park Theater. Favorite past roles include Sheree/ Dixie Swim Club, Bella/Angel Street, Veta/ Harvey, and Christine/The Bad Seed. Gerrie wants to thank Director Bryce Alexander for this opportunity and is looking forward to getting to know the TNP theater family.

Brad Brenner (John) is pleased to be p er f o r ming aga in w i t h TNP! He has performed in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey in The Rimers of Eldritch, A View from the Bridge, The Miracle Worker, and many others. He has performed in Coney Island Christmas, My Fair Lady, Sister Act, Miracle on 34th Street, Chicago, and Footloose with The Naples Players. Brad is happy to be part of the wonderful TNP family! He thanks his wife Christine Mastrangelo who currently puts up with his nonsense, and his twin daughters Erin and Kelsey who used to put up with it. Hayley Burns (Elaine) is thankful and excited to be making her TNP debut! She has fond memories of her years in youth theater in southeast Michigan where her favorite role was as “Available Jones” in Li’l Abner (a play that certainly didn’t stand the test of time). She would like to thank The Naples Players for seeing her inner “theater kid” spark and giving her something to look forward to after the past strange year. Endless gratitude to her dad for his unyielding support of all her pursuits. Dedicated to her mom, who was her first audience and best improv partner, and is missed every day.
