Growing with MATURE BEYOND HER YEARS, 18-YEAR-OLD CHIARA HAS NO PROBLEM JUMPING BETWEEN SHAKESPEARE’S TWELFTH NIGHT WITH A STUDENT CAST AND WILDE’S AN IDEAL HUSBAND WITH AN ADULT CAST. BY: LAUREN SPEIRS

Chiara Padejka comes to TNP by way of Brooklyn where she studied at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Her performing career started with ballet dancing and she studied at Steps on Broadway in Manhattan. Chiara knew she didn’t want to be a professional ballerina. She loved living in the moment and drawing from the story but the technical demands of dance were not something she was passionate about. She remembers being in a dress rehearsal for a ballet performance and the director of the program came in to watch. The director said “Everyone’s great on the technique but Chiara’s doing something different.” From there she became more invested in acting and started studying with Katie Capello (writer of Netflix’s new Grand Army). From Katie’s work, she found a sense of female empowerment and a depiction of how women are portrayed in society. In NYC, Chiara also started studying Tennessee Williams and found a strong foundation in classical works.

12

TNP BACKSTAGE

She was then fortunate enough to study in the UK at the British American Drama Academy which offers two different programs to study with British theater professionals. Here, Chiara studied voice, movement, accents, and dialects. She had the opportunity to watch performances at The Globe and The Royal Shakespeare Company. “It was a wonderful experience to not only work on our craft but also learn what life as an actor is like and what that entails.” Chiara’s introduction to The Naples Players was a bit of a blur! Her mom called her and said “They’re having auditions today, can you think of something fast and come here?” to which Chiara responded, “Ugh...okay, I’ll come, but nothing will come of it.”

She did the audition and a few days later got a call to be in The Sound of Music. “From there, one thing led to another and I got other opportunities so...thanks, Mom!” Chiara’s grateful she stumbled across The Naples Players last year.

PEGGY MONSON'S RETURN TO THEATRE Chiara Padejka performs during TNP's Jeremy Giovinazzo as Pepper in theNight TNP production of Twelfth production of Mamma Mia!

“What I love about TNP is that there’s so many ages, so many different backgrounds and so many different stories. Some people have never done a play. Someone in Twelfth Night has never done Shakespeare and they originally thought it would be boring.”

On the other hand, “there are immensely experienced actors who are doing this for fulfillment outside their normal job. This is a whole entire troupe of people who just want to share that; and everyone here is really warm.” As a child, Chiara knew she wanted to be an actress when she saw Cate Blanchett in an Anton Chekhov play. “Chekhov is really long and difficult to understand. I skipped swimming practice to watch the whole play. I was so captivated by Cate, she’s such an amazing actress. She’s really the reason I wanted to pursue acting afterwards.” However, Chiara “didn’t do the whole child actor thing. I just decided to focus on my training and pursue it as an adult. My parents are very adamant about me pursuing my education and just having a childhood. You need life experience for

THE NAPLES PLAYERS

authenticity on stage. Training and gaining experience is what I’m most focused on. Also, maybe it’s from dance, but I learn so much from observing and watching.” As far as the future beyond The Naples Players goes, Chiara’s done a bit of television work and is always looking for projects. “I always loved movies ever since I was little, that’s definitely where I want to wind up. I’d like to be in 10 movies. One from every genre I can think of: historical, thriller, sci-fi, drama, romantic comedy, etc. I based the model off of Quentin Tarantino (who said he’ll make 10 movies).” It’s evident how appreciative Chiara is to follow her passion and have the support of her family behind all of her acting endeavors. “My parents love theatre and dance. My Dad loves music. Everyone in my family would pursue something artistic if they had the chance. I’m really grateful that I get to pursue this for them as well as for me.” Interested in learning about acting and joining the TNP Family? Connecting with Communities

HOW ONE COUPLE IS SHARING THEIR TALENTS WITH MULTIPLE THEATRES... BY: LAUREN SPEIRS

The Naples Players (TNP) is lucky to have more than one super talented couple take the stage. Frank Scott Davis (known to his TNP family as “Scott”) and his partner Timothy Higgins first graced The Naples Players with their presence in 2017. They happened upon the theatre while strolling down 5th Avenue one Christmas and TNP Company Manager Esther Snyder introduced them to our facilities. Scott and Tim were both already successful actors when a mutual friend introduced them at a restaurant almost 15 years ago. Sharing the same passion for theatre, they love supporting the arts and always give back to the community. Living seasonally in Fort Myers and Michigan, the couple split their time between TNP and Grosse Pointe Theatre in Michigan. Scott and Tim were so happy when they found The Naples Players as it has a “similar family atmosphere (to their home theatre in Michigan). We love The Naples

16

TNP BACKSTAGE

Players and Dawn and Charlie Fornara, (TNP directors).” Scott started his performing career as a singer and participated in choir and drama in high school. He was also a hurdler in track and field. “I was awarded drama and choir scholarships but track gave me the most bang for my buck.”

Later, Scott was in Measure for Measure, a men’s choral society, which took him to Wales for a world competition. He was in the barbershop quartet in The Music Man and has also performed in Hairspray, Grease, and Les Misérables, to name a few. Scott never had any formal education in drama, he just learned everything from excellent directors and actors. “I never thought I would be on Broadway and I get just as much joy from community theatre as I imagine you would on Broadway. This (TNP) is the closest feeling to Broadway.”

AN IDEAL HUSBAND

Jeremy Giovinazzo as Pepper in the TNP F. Scott Davis performing production of Mia! inMamma My Fair Lady

When they first started volunteering at The Naples Players, they were a little overwhelmed by how professional the stage and facilities are. This was their first theatre experience outside of Michigan and they “couldn’t believe the stage.” Additionally, Scott and Tim were “so impressed with Cole (Butcher)” and his awesome stage management skills. Scott is a proud father of 2 and worked as a speech therapist in Ann Arbor, Michigan public schools until he retired in 2015. Now in private practice, he has put these skills to excellent use in order to help singers with breath support; including singers who overuse their voice. Scott’s talents as a speech language pathologist doesn’t end with his therapy for singers. He also works with PresenceLearning, a platform which allows for each student’s therapy to be highly individualized. Through PresenceLearning, he has been an integral part of getting kids the devices they need in order to connect with others.

“Getting kids access to speech devices changes everything– they go from being in a dark hole to being able to communicate.”

Amazingly enough, some of the devices function with eye gaze instead of touching. He has consulted with Craig Price, TNP’s Director of Community Education & Wellness to get additional inspiration for his work in Michigan with students with Autism. His work with Grosse Pointe Theatre involves integrating and including children with Autism in Grosse Pointe’s youth theatre program.

While we would love to have seasonal Scott and Tim full time at TNP, we’re so happy we get to work with them while they’re in town! It’s wonderful to see the exchanging of ideas and skills across different geographic communities.

A Closer

Look

AT AN IDEAL HUSBAND

An Ideal Husband — the title itself seems to suggest the impossible. Can there be such a person? This play looks at Sir Robert Chiltern’s public life and his private life; and the mistake in his past that could destroy both. He must maintain a certain public persona to be a successful politician, and, as the title suggests, a successful spouse, as well. What makes Sir Robert who he is: The indiscretion in his past, his integrity in the present, or both? An Ideal Husband stresses the importance of a spotless public image and unquestionable personal integrity. But as the play suggests, these ideals of human behavior may in fact be beyond our ability; and they may be less desirable than we think. For all the wit and humor in An Ideal Husband, there is a real danger to the characters’ lives in the event of a potential scandal. Sir Robert Chiltern is an upstanding man, irreproachable politician, and an ideal husband...or so it would seem. But, Wilde knew the impossibility of a man being completely defined by a perfect persona.

26

TNP BACKSTAGE

AN IDEAL HUSBAND

It’s hard not to connect the themes of An Ideal Husband with the very public real-life scandal that destroyed Wilde himself. He nearly foreshadows his own fate as he seems to understand well the threat of a scandal; and how quickly the public and private lives of any person can be brought to its knees.

WHO WAS

?

Oscar Wilde

Best remembered as a playwright, Wilde was also a popular author of essays, poems, and short stories. His lectures and memorable aphorisms attracted followers years before his plays became successful. His private life drew even more attention, but his writing has withstood the test of time and has much to say to today’s audiences and readers. Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on October 16th, 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. Wilde later attended Dublin’s Trinity College and Magdalen College in Oxford, England from which he graduated with a degree in Classical Literature. Much of Wilde’s writing was influenced by his mother Jane, a poet. Even then, Wilde was well known for his eccentric fashion and behavior.

28

TNP BACKSTAGE

AN IDEAL HUSBAND

In 1882, he lectured across the United States, assuring US Customs officials he had ‘nothing to declare but my genius’! Soon thereafter, Wilde married Constance Lloyd and fathered two sons. The family lived in London where he became editor of Woman’s World magazine. By 1890, he published his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray followed soon after by his play Lady Windermere’s Fan– his first critical and financial success. Next came another hit entitled, A Woman of No Importance. In January 1885, An Ideal Husband opened in London. Wilde endured a much-publicized trial and imprisonment for ‘gross indecency.’ Afterwards, a couple of years after his wife Constance died, Wilde wandered around Europe for three years, living with friends or in cheap hotels. He died in Paris in 1900 of cerebral meningitis that he had contracted in prison. He is buried in France.

AN IDEAL HUS

ector From Dir

lson Steve Wi

It seems difficult to fully comprehend the changes we have all endured over the last 14 months. Outrageous fortune has truly outdone herself! Those of us privileged to call ourselves theatre artists have been particularly hard hit since our passion lies in gathering people into confined spaces to provide an authentic, transformative and singular experience. While we honor the good work done online, we are delighted to welcome you all back to the theatre!! I will not bore you with my personal journey, but suffice it to say, when Bryce Alexander called me to direct this production of An Ideal Husband, it was a pivotal moment in my life. I had known the play on the periphery of my experience, but, like many, my impressions of Oscar Wilde were dominated by his extraordinary comic play The Importance of Being Earnest as well as the great tragedy of his real-life story. While Earnest is certainly a great play, I believe An Ideal Husband to be Wilde’s masterpiece. It is constructed perfectly, flowing seamlessly between humor and anguish. It offers a cleaner plot than the moving and dark A Woman of No Importance while combining the deft and brilliant comic wordplay recognizable in Earnest and Lady

32

TNP BACKSTAGE

Windermere’s Fan with a staggering pathos that makes artist and audience dig deep to consider the universal reflections of the play. At times, Husband defies classification, since there are elements of comedy, melodrama, tragedy, political drama, and a morality tale simmering beneath the surface of Wilde’s genius with language and human observation. An Ideal Husband combines a captivating plot with a plethora of three-dimensional characters and explores several thematic topics that seem designed to engage an audience in various ways. The theme of ambition as defined by the political machinations that manifest behind closed doors seems strangely relevant in a politically divided America of 2021. And while we experience the price of Robert’s dark secret, he will remind us of the necessity of this moral transgression in his ability to be ultimately successful. This seems out of keeping with the traditional stereotypical hero whose spotless reputation never really reflects the real ambiguities of life.

AN IDEAL HUSBAND

The themes of the hypocrisy of the upper class to uphold stringent moral codes while living quite different realities are railed against and showcased in the Wilde surrogate character of Lord Goring and his match in Mabel Chiltern. These characters are steeped in Wilde’s great investigation of artifice (think Cecily and Gwendolyn from Earnest). But for me the center of the play rests in the exploration of love and marriage (the play’s title should be a clue here). Wilde will showcase myriad opinions on these topics as seen through the eyes of multiple characters - from seasoned personalities like Lady Markby and Lord Caversham, to the young love of Mabel, the jaded view of Mrs. Cheveley, the aging bachelor in Goring, and of course the seemingly “ideal” love of the Chilterns. Like many couples who walk together through tragedy, the Chilterns’ relationship is strengthened and empowered in unforeseen ways by this transformative experience. The play has four exceptional and complex leading players whose dualities make for particularly realistic renderings. Our playbill includes two of the most interesting female characters in modern drama with one serving as our antagonist - unusual for the time and a testament to Wilde’s expansive opinions on gender. We have the profoundly philosophic “dandy” character (traditionally only interested in pleasure and appearance) who facilitates catharsis at several climactic moments. We have the honorable politician who carries the transgressions of his youth while retaining his solid moral compass. And the upstanding and intellectual wife, highly idealistic with a penchant for public service but a naïve perspective on real connection. They play out a grand narrative that at times feels more like Shakespeare or Ibsen than a comedy of manners. For me, An Ideal Husband is an IDEAL play! I hope you find it so. I believe it has something for everyone. You can indulge in the twists and turns of the wonderful plot, empathize with the humanity of some exceptionally well-drawn characters, consider the great themes of love and marriage, or just relish the wit and witticism of one of the great masters of the English language – the incomparable Oscar Wilde. Enjoy.

The Analytical Artist FROM BALLET DANCER TO ACTRESS AND SCIENTIST, IS THERE ANYTHING TINA MORONI CAN’T DO?! BY: LAUREN SPEIRS

Originally from Williamstown, New Jersey, dancing and acting never overlapped for Tina. She danced professionally until she was 25 years old and, when she went to UCF for forensic science, she realized she couldn’t keep up with both school and dancing simultaneously. Once Tina stopped dancing, she found a passion for acting. Even though she left professional dancing, her methods for approaching a play are similar to the way she would learn a dance. “For me, there’s a high marriage of physicality with acting. I struggle with learning lines until I know where I’m moving or what I’m doing. As a dancer, you’re trained to see and then do. See the routine, do the routine. This trained me to be able to mimic every motion and emotion. It helped a lot with any non verbal communication. There are moments in a play where you want to convey a specific emotion without words and you need to know how to show that in some way.” Tina holds a masters in DNA and serology. She works for Neogenomics in Fort Myers where she does molecular testing for can-

cer. Someone from a non-dance background might think a passion for ballet and a passion for science are just about as opposite as you can get! However, as Tina points out, in dance “you have to be very analytical. There is a structure, and there are rules and discipline. But you have to be able to think outside the box and be creative to have a breakthrough in either field.” It’s been so long since Tina danced full time that it all feels very “nostalgic” to her now. “It’s been about 15 years since I danced professionally. I moved into social dancing where I started learning salsa, cha cha, and rumba and started competing in salsa. They are completely different techniques (ballet and social dancing)!” Social dancing is also how Tina first met her husband. When Tina was new to Naples, she googled the theatres around town to begin her research. “Of course, at first I drove by (TNP) like a weirdo,” she jokes. After further investigation, she says “The Naples Players has the highest quality productions I have ever seen. I just had to wait for the right play.

Tina Moroni in the TNP production of Maple and Vine.

Maple and Vine came along and it was Bryce’s first direction experience for a season that he had picked. (When he first arrived, he inherited someone else’s season). Maple and Vine was in the Tobye Studio Theatre and a bit controversial - a real meaty play.” Tina feels a strong connection to TNP and the community around it. “We moved around so much and I’ve been to theatres all over the country. I don’t think I’ve experienced a situation where I knew everyone in the building. It may sound trite but it is a family situation here. Naples is a tight-knit community and TNP has meshed itself in. It’s a home feeling and...there’s dogs!” The Naples Players has given Tina so many opportunities to utilize all of her talents; such as choreographing for Yours, Truly and The Great Gatsby. Not only that, but Tina had never used her voice on stage before.

kids have incredible training. All of the kids know how to sight read (reading a small portion of a script with no preparation); they can just perform because they’ve been taught to do this. In rehearsals, it’s usually ‘Okay we have to get the adults to catch up with the kids now.’ They really create a safe space for you to push yourself and develop new talents.” As far as her future with The Naples Players is concerned, Tina is “very into clothes. I will audition for a show just for the costume. If I were to see myself some place here (other than on stage) I would love to do costume design for a show. I could get lost in the (costume) shop and just never come out! I love costumes and learning about the history of them.”

“This was the first time I’ve done a musical and the first time I’ve had to sing on stage.” (In ballet, all expression is communicated through movement and mime). “The level of coaching you get for a show is very upper level. I don’t know if people appreciate the kind of resources you have here. The KidzAct
