Social climbing, class-consciousness, and status seeking – all quite modern terms and all too familiar to people of all ages. Who among us has not experienced this first hand? As Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was written in the early 1600’s, there’s no question that these class phenomena have existed for centuries. It’s the reason why the play is so compelling to modern audiences. The problems resulting from social ambition are easily seen in the character of Malvolio. At first glance, he appears to be a
6
reasonably competent servant, although somewhat prudish and dour. However, he turns out to be a first-class egotist with a burning desire to rise above his social class. Maria then plays on Malvolio’s ambitions by forging a letter from Olivia, a wealthy noble lady. This letter allows Malvolio to believe that Olivia is in love with him and even wants to marry him.
Sir Toby and the others are terribly amused, of course - both because of Malvolio’s unattractive personality and because he isn’t of noble blood. In the class system of Shakespeare’s time, a noblewoman was not likely to besmirch her reputation by marrying a man of lower social status.
That same spirit is alive in the town of Illyria. Malvolio’s antagonist, Maria, is able to increase her social standing by marrying Sir Toby. But it seems that Maria’s success may be due to her willingness to accept and promote the anarchy that Sir Toby and the others embrace.
Interestingly, Twelfth Night’s atmosphere may make Malvolio’s aspirations less unreasonable than they seem. During the feast of Twelfth Night, from which the play takes its name, social hierarchies are turned upside down.
This Twelfth Night spirit seems to pass by Malvolio, who doesn’t wholeheartedly embrace the upending of order and decorum. He would rather blur class lines for himself alone.

YOU K “Twelfth Night,” also known as “Epiphany Eve,” is a festival in some branches of Christianity. It refers to the twelfth night after Christmas, the last night of what used to be the extended period of celebration of the Christmas season.
Scholars believe Shakespeare wrote Twelfth Night between 1601 and 1602. Other works he was constructing at the time were Hamlet, Othello, and All’s Well That
Ends Well.
The plot of the teen film She’s the Man is based on Twelfth Night.
8
W O KN In 1987, British pop singer Samantha Fox recorded a song entitled “If Music Be the Food of Love,” which takes its title and lyrics from one of Orsino’s speeches.
In Twelfth Night, Antonio refers to an inn called “The Elephant” in Illyria; in Shakespeare’s day, “The Elephant” was a pub close to the Globe Theatre in London, where many of his plays were performed. .
