HOW THEATRE PREPARES YOU FOR BUSINESS By Lauren Speirs
You might recognize Paulette Oliva from The Naples Players' (TNP) production of Calendar Girls…but did you know she also volunteers off stage at TNP? Paulette and her husband Peter (McClung, who most recently appeared in An Ideal Husband) have ushered and they also lent a hand at the Gala.
Paulette Oliva and Brad Brenner in Calendar Girls
After 30 years in the industry, Paulette sold her company in 2019 to a private equity firm. Soon after, she flew down to see three friends performing in different shows in Fort Myers. While in southwest Florida, Paulette immediately fell in love with the elegance of Naples and was able to buy a home in Bonita before the pandemic. “The paint hadn't even dried and we were already involved with The Naples Players!
When you get involved with a theater, it’s always ‘add water, instant family.’ We both gave up our equity cards because we decided we wanted to do this for fun.”
The couple recently gave up their equity cards, which you receive from working in an equity theater or building up points. Paulette says, “I got mine when I was 21 and had a contract right away. I wound up taking the business route and owned a marketing company. I was still able to do theatre on the side. I would be backstage during intermission on my laptop! My company was completely outside of the arts - we started out in direct mail marketing and developed into email and social media marketing. We brought our clients kicking and screaming into the 21st century by moving from catalogs to where things are now.”

Paulette and Peter discovered TNP while strolling down 5th Avenue South. “Peter said, ‘I heard there’s a community theater down here, I think it’s on this street.’ We were blown away when we saw the size of it! We took a tour and got involved right away we felt immediately embraced.” Paulette is originally from Valhalla in New York State and she’s a Broadway fanatic she still has an apartment in the theater district in NYC. Involved with acting and music since she was a child, Paulette went to Mercy College to continue her studies. In 2021, Paulette was given an honorary doctorate and was invited to address the graduates of the School of Liberal Arts at their commencement ceremony. In her WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND UNAFRAID

Early on in her career, she thought she had to keep her acting passion quiet from her business mentor. “I told a mentor one day that I had to leave at 5 pm for rehearsal." His positive reaction made her realize that

"theatre gave me an edge in business. I could speak in front of 1,000 people and think on my feet. You are the sum of your parts - I brought whatever I could to the table in business.” With Paulette’s vast experience in acting and producing, she has amazing things to say about her time with The Naples Players. “I think the organizational structure here is really phenomenal. The infrastructure for that has probably taken a long time to perfect but TNP has perfected that. As a result, the production values are really high. "You know there will be a support system every step of the way and it’s always a pleasure. We even have a table read in our first rehearsal and the chance to explore - I love that. You feel very prepared when you walk out on stage. Design, scenery, support staff, technical crew - everyone conducts themselves so professionally and no one is left out to hang and I just love that feeling. Continued On Page 12 > THE NAPLES PLAYERS

HOW THEATRE PREPARES YOU FOR BUSINESS Continued From Page 11 Whether it’s from an offstage volunteer standpoint such as volunteering for the gala - there are specific hours and everything is broken up so you can give as little or as much as you want. Peter and I were both blown away by the organizational structure of it. We’ve worked at a lot of theaters and this one is right up there - top notch!” With preparations for When We Were Young and Unafraid underway, Paulette says,
“It’s crazy how timely this production is today. There are a lot of emotional things that appealed to me like the support of women. "I have three daughters and have spent my entire life making sure they feel supported in every way. It’s so important for women to be heard and protect each other. I was brought up Catholic and abortion was never an option for me but I would fight to support those who need it. This play is about finding your voice and it’s something that I always wanted my daughters to find early on in life.” Interested in volunteering and finding out how theatre can benefit you? There are abundant opportunities at The Naples Players! Volunteers have options to commit to time frames that fit their schedules. TNP volunteers are also wearing masks in the building to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
W
hen first reading through When We Were Young and Unafraid I was struck by how, despite being based in 1972, it plays like it is set in current times. The conversations that are woven through the story are the same ones that we are having 50 years later and continue to dominate American politics. It is particularly striking this year, as we look at policies that are up for debate three generations after they had been thought to be put to rest. At its heart this play is about the lives of women. The sometimes secret lives we tend to ignore and hide under the rug, that we talk about in hushed tones and lower our eyes when confronted with. But these lives are repeated and revisited time and time again, and if we would dare to look them in the eye, to see their actual face, we might be able to see the person behind the issue and try to understand why we are stuck in a place that we, as a society, always seem to always find ourselves.
These are four women just trying to do something with their lives. Just trying to live their lives. Just trying to stay alive.

Born in Boston, MA, to a consultant/angel investor mother and a pediatric gastroenterologist father, Sarah Treem began writing poetry at just eight years of age.
When she was twelve, her first play won a young playwright contest and was staged in Connecticut. She continued to write during high school and college, earning a BA from Yale in 2002, and an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama in 2005. Treem's work in television began on the acclaimed HBO series In Treatment. She then moved on to write and co-executive produce the political drama House of Cards. In 2014, Treem co-created the hit Showtime series The Affair, which won the Golden Globe for Outstanding Drama Series. In addition to her Golden Globe win, Treem's work has earned nominations for the Humanitas Prize, Primetime Emmy Awards, and four Writers Guild of America Awards, including two wins for House of Cards and In Treatment.

In November 2019, Treem signed a multi-year deal with Fox to create and produce series for their network, cable, and streaming platforms. Currently, she’s developing a limited series based on the life of Hedy Lamarr, starring Gal Gadot. Sarah also teaches a week-long intensive on television drama and has previously taught at Yale. When We Were Young and Unafraid premiered in the summer of 2014 and starred Cherry Jones. Treem’s A Feminine Ending premiered at Playwrights Horizons and was produced at South Coast Rep and Portland Center Stage. The How and The Why premiered at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ and starred Mercedes Ruehl. Treem's other plays include Empty Sky, Orphan Island, Human Voices, and Mirror Mirror.

But also in 1972 A new age of feminism was just dawning, and women were struggling to find their voices as new roles and perceptions were beginning to evolve. The action of When We Were Young and Unafraid takes place before Roe v. Wade and before the Violence Against Women Act. And equally important, the play is set before women had places to turn in times of distress, before their voices – as individuals and in groups – were heard and believed! When Agnes turned her quiet, remote bed and breakfast into one of the few, albeit secret, spots where victims of domestic violence could seek refuge, she was almost entirely alone. To ensure women’s safety, the locations of the small ‘network’ of such sanctuaries that did manage to exist were kept in strictest confidence.

PROPS TO OUR INTERNS By Lauren Speirs
Here at The Naples Players (TNP) we have amazing volunteers who work with our staff, but did you know we also have an internship program? Jillian Feigenblat is our prop department intern and works closely with volunteers and staff to make all of TNP’s 20212022 productions come to life. Jillian is originally from Connecticut but moved to Palm City, Florida in high school. In her junior year, she was looking to get involved in after school activities when she decided that “theatre seemed like a fun thing to be a part of! I asked if I could be backstage because the thought of being onstage horrifies me.
It just happened naturally for me with props and I fell in love with it. I’m glad I learned about it because I have a really great job!” After receiving her BFA in theatre production and design, Jillian wanted to do props and scenic design somewhere and found TNP’s internship program on OffstageJobs. com. After investigating The Naples Players’ website to find out more, she decided that “it looked like a great place to be.” You may be wondering what a day looks like for a prop designer. Jillian says,

“I make all the prop lists for the shows and source everything we need here. I also help Mike build and paint the sets with the volunteers. There’s a lot of overlap with scenic and if something needs to be found or purchased, I find it and figure out a way to get it to us. Sometimes I also go up to the costume shop to use their sewing machines if needed.” It certainly gets busy for the staff, interns, and volunteers at TNP. “The biggest challenge is time. We make it work but there’s a lot to get done and ready for the shows, especially when you have three shows going on in tandem. Tech week is when I get to see my work with everything else happening on stage and ask the director what they think of it and if they like it. By the time it gets on stage, everything is in good shape!” Luckily, all of The Naples Players’ interns get along! They share an apartment downtown and Jillian says, “we’re all super happy to be living together still (after starting way back in the summer of 2021). TNP is definitely a unique place and I’ve genuinely enjoyed being here. I don’t have a volunteer who stays with me all the time but there is one who comes in and asks what we need, which is great - we paint or use the machinery together.”

Up next for Jillian is going to Wisconsin to work for American Players. She will continue to work in the props department for this equity theater and will be reporting to someone as a ‘props artisan.’
“My focus will be different there and I will get the opportunity to learn even more in addition to what I have already collected from my experience here in Naples. It’s been so fun here and my portfolio looks awesome. The Wedding Singer was my first show and my experience here has been super educational. Even just learning all the basics about hand tools and sewing. Or, how different glues work! I’ll go to use something and Chase or Mike will say ‘no’ and explain why. It’s great to be a part of and seeing the shows come to fruition is amazing.”

The biggest challenge for Jillian from this season was The Cake. “There were a lot of food props and set decorations. We needed fifteen fake cakes and one of them needed to have a real piece of cake in it. I learned a lot on the show. The director wanted a certain amount of cakes for display and I would do some research on them and send it back to them to see if they liked it. Other things (like the cupcakes) I just came up with!” All of us at TNP wish Jillian luck with her next steps! CREATIVE TEAM BIOS DOT AUCHMOODY. . . . . . . . (Costume Designer) is celebrating her 20th season as the Resident Costume Designer for The Naples Players. Over the years it is hard to pick a favorite, but it is always fun to do period shows. Special thanks to Emma and her fantastic ensemble for being great partners in creating the wardrobe for each character that is timely but not overpowering. Thanks also to Starlet for the insights from living in the area where this show is set. It's been a great team to work with.
The show had its first Australian tour in 2019, was a Western Australian Critics Choice winner at Fringe World Festival 2020 in Perth, WA and has had runs in Brisbane at The Powerhouse (2019) and La Boite Theatre Company (2021). In 2020 she directed Holidays From The Heart, a virtual performance and fundraising program produced by Bravehearts For Broadway, streamed on Playbill.com for The Actors Fund. She has taught and directed at The Papermill Playhouse Conservatory and Intensive Summer Programs, StageDoor Manor, Rutgers-RSAC, Pomona College, CA and UNSW Dance and Drama Dept.
