his weekend, a large portion of the student body will migrate across the Red River to a quaint little town called Dallas. So maybe it’s not so quaint, and it’s definitely not small, but we’re all going to have a pretty good time there! Whether you’re headed to the Texas State Fair to see the new Big Tex, or you’re planning to stick around Norman (pg. 14), we’ve got you covered. Plus, we have a playlist for all you ACL-goers!

No matter how many times you’ve made the trek to Dallas, it’s always an adventure (pg. 7). From the West End to the Fairgrounds, something is always happening. Take this weekend to hang with your friends, eat one too many corndogs and lose your voice cheering for the Sooners. IOS- $0.99 Pop Cap’s “Plants vs. Zombies 2” provides hours of enjoyment for a single player. Just like its predecessor, “Plants vs. Zombies 2” is a tower defense game that features a variety of special plants, such as the peashooter that fires peas, to defend your home from a zombie invasion. From time to time, an advertisement for a plant you can purchase will pop up, but it is possible to make it through this game without buying anything. Though it’s not out on Android devices yet, the video game news website Polygon reported the game is rumored to release for Android devices this month.

Ios- $1.99 This game may not last you the three-hour drive to Dallas, but it’ll definitely come in handy when you and your friends are waiting for the game to start or queuing in the fried Oreo line. “Wrestle Jump” puts you and a friend — or the computer — in an unconventional luchador match. Donning a red mask and the other wearing a blue, two luchadors stand together in a desert infinitely grasping each other’s arms. Using only one button, players control their respective character’s legs to strategically jumping around the 2D map to slam their opponent’s head into the ground or on a wall to earn a point. The first person to five points wins.

IOS ANd Android- $4.99 It’s great that you’ve decided to travel in a group, so refrain from being anti-social by sharing your technology with your friends and play Hasbro’s virtual “The Game of Life.” Just like the classic board game, compete with one to three of your friends to earn a degree, buy a house, get a job and win life. Even though they cost the same and they appear to be the same, the iOS and Android version of the game are different. The iOS version allows for up to six players and has a “Game of Life journal” that tracks your life’s big events. The Android version, however, only allows for four players and doesn’t have the journal.

podcast- Free For the responsible driver who must keep their hands on the wheel, consider downloading NPR and WBEZ Chicago’s “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” Podcast. Though this isn’t a game app, it’s a 48-minute comedic news quiz that you can play along with when you’ve gotten tired of listening to Katy Perry’s “Roar” for the thousandth time. Most podcasts are an hour or longer, so if “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!” isn’t your cup of tea, browse through the podcast section for your mobile device and find a podcast to keep you company on your trip to Texas.

Protect those baby blues Sunglasses The 11 a.m. game means you’ll have plenty of time to get all those bright rays of sun right in the eyes. Do yourself a favor so you’ll actually be able to see the game and not just the sun, and wear some sunglasses. Maybe throw them on some croakies if you’re afraid of carrying too much.

Small Bag According to the Cotton Bowl’s website, purses larger than a clutch, backpacks and pretty much any bag larger than 12 inches are prohibited — unless they are seethrough — at the stadium. So it’s time to either invest in a plastic purse or take your smallest clutch.

Shield the rays A hat Again with the sun! Seriously. The sun can be mean and hateful the closer you get to the equator, and we can’t emphasize sun protection enough. Or if you don’t feel like doing your hair in the morning before going to the game, a hat can be a cute alternative. Just make sure it has an interlocking O and U on it!

It could be a little nippy Light Jacket At least pack one for the trip, and check the weather before heading to the game, just in case. According to weather.com, the low will be around 59 degrees, so this will be a necessary precaution. That way you won’t be lugging unnecessary baggage.

Get in the door Your Ticket Do not forget your tickets! Check twice before you leave Oklahoma, before you leave your hotel room and check again before getting out of your vehicle. And maybe just to be extra, extra sure, check your pockets every 10 minutes. Your tickets are precious cargo and can never be too safe.

When it comes to what you wear this weekend, it’s important to plan ahead at least a few days before you leave. That way you know what you’re wearing, and what your best friends are wearing, to make sure no one looks too out of place hanging with your group — or worse, too much alike. It sounds weird, but let’s be honest ... you don’t want to be that one person rocking your chapter’s OU-Texas T-shirt while the rest of your friends are decked out in their most perfect crimson and cream classy attire. Fashion Friday This day tends to be everyone’s shopping day. If you are lucky enough not to have Friday classes, then we recommend heading south early that morning to shop around Galleria Dallas or, our personal favorite, NorthPark Center. The drive down and the afternoon filled with shopping is casual. Think chapter OU-Texas shirt with a cute pair of jeans or high-waisted shorts. Guys, the same goes for you, well minus the high-waisted aspect, but you get the point. Think casual! Out on the Town Now, Friday night is when you get the chance to dress a little fancier. When getting dressed for your first night out, remember that you’re in Dallas. You are no longer confined to the social constructs of plain old Norman and Campus Corner. Also, keep in mind that you are not only dressing to impress your OU friends but also our university’s biggest rival, who happens to be sharing the Dallas bar scene. But don’t let what we just said freak you out. Keep it classy and simple. Maybe rock a skirt with wedges and new blouse you got at the mall. Just make sure you own it! Also, red is not a necessity this night. However, if you plan on heading to the West End, you might consider adding a shade of red to your outfit simply so everyone will know you’re rooting for the winning team.

State Fair Statement wear Ah, game day. If you haven’t picked out an outfit yet, then you’re wrong. The OU-Texas game day outfit is critical. You have to think about the weather, if you plan on only going to the fair and even how long you’re thinking about staying at the game. All of this plays into whether you wear a skirt, a dress or a simple crimson top with denim bottoms. But the one staple that is an absolute must for both Soonerloving men and women is cowboy boots. And crimson is, of course, beyond necessary. Bring out the big guns for this day because plenty of pictures will be taken, which means every one of your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter friends will see what you decided to wear on the best game day of the season.

STand out saturday night It’s time to go out in winning style! Crimson is not necessary but encouraged, (assuming the Sooners kick the Longhorns’ ugly burnt orange butts like usual). Date parties tend to be Saturday night, so dresses are a typical outfit to see. However, it’s time to ditch the boots and put on some cute heels or wedges. Guys, it’s time to pull out the button downs and nice jeans. Khakis are acceptable, but it depends on the date party or bar you are attending.

If it’s your first year, or even your fourth (like ours) … its slightly depressing), we are going to help you love every minute. Get ready for a tell-all guide on how to survive and make it the best weekend yet.

You’ve finally arrived and checked into your hotel. First, look around to see who you know staying there. Second, find out who your neighbors are. Maybe you’ll luck out and they will be friends of yours. Just hope they aren’t grumpy tourists who accidentally decided to visit Dallas on this crazy weekend. Third, grab something to eat…this will be important later. Fourth, it’s time to get ready! You are about to set your standard for the weekend. Fifth, find a taxi or make friends with a limo driver. Arrange for them to always pick you up for a fixed price. (We did this last year; it was wonderful not having to hunt for a taxi or get ripped off.) If you are lucky, your hotel might be near a Dallas Area Rail Transit (DART) station and you can get an all-day pass. They are a great investment! Sixth, by now, it’s about 10:30 p.m. or so, and you should be in Uptown or the West End district. You don’t want to miss the random fights that can (and will) break out, and people getting zip-tied instead of handcuffed. (It doesn’t matter how many times you see it…it’s still funny.) Crazy things will happen on Friday night. You might just have the liquid courage to make out with the person you’ve been crushing on. You will most likely end up stealing something from the bar (shot glass) or from your hotel (towel). Make sure you chug a bottle of water, take a couple Advil and set MULTIPLE alarms. You might even want to request a wake up call. Keep your curtains open so that the sun will help you wake up in the morning. It can be pretty rough...

It’s the spring break of the fall semester. Simply put. The Sooners’ Red River Rivalry record for the last decade.

It’s game day, and you’re trying to decide if you should get out of bed or not. Well, GET OUT OF BED! Pour yourself some mimosas, and get the day started. Your hotel room is most likely a mess, and some might be questioning what happened last night, but you can talk about that on your way to the game. In our experience, DART rail is the best way to travel to the game. There isn’t the stop-and-go motion of a taxi, which would bring up a little more of last night than you want. Once you’ve arrived, get your game face on. You’re in the fairgrounds and now the fun begins. Grab yourself a Fletcher’s corndog and try and meet up with friends in front of the new Big Tex. IT’S GAME TIME! Find your seat, and watch the Sooners dominate the Longhorns. By halftime, the Longhorns will have left the stadium, tired of watching their team get destroyed. Some Sooners may leave at this time if they can’t kick the hangover or want to run around at the fair. After the game and fair shenanigans, it’s naptime. Yes, you read that correctly. Trust us, and go take a two-hour nap. Here is the true test of how far you want to take this weekend: Are you going to live in a 24-hour drunken state, or will you enter the 36-hour binger? There is no harm in deciding to stay in for the night, order some room service or maybe even go out for a nice dinner. But come on! There’s only one OU-Texas weekend!

It’s an experience that students need to participate in. The energy at the game is unequal to any other. It’s always fun to run into people from high school that now go to UT.

Rise and Shine, Sooner fans! The weekend is coming to a close, and you have to check out of your room before you’re charged for an extra day. The time has come to hug all of your Texas “friends” good-bye. Dallas has transformed back into neutral territory until 2014. Neither of you can change the outcome of the game now, so you might as well put it behind you. Before you steer your car full of hungover friends toward the Interstate 35 on-ramp, plan to get something to eat. If you are in a hurry, stop and grab some fast food — Dallas has In-NOut, you know. Or if you’re lucky enough to have friends from Dallas maybe their parents will cook your group a brunch. With some food in your stomachs, it’s time to hit the road and head north. Prepare yourself for trafﬁc and the inevitable cars pulling over so that people don’t get sick on the leather. Sad, but true. Just avert your eyes and pretend it isn’t happening — and cross your ﬁngers that no one in your car is feeling ill. Monday is right around the corner, and it just so happens to be midterm week. With that in mind, use the drive home to study for those upcoming tests or catch up on some much needed sleep. Once you pass the Oklahoma sign, you’ll know that you have now successfully survived this year’s OU-Texas experience. We hope you had the time of your life and made plenty of memories!

Chill out elsewhere

You will likely have more people staying with you than available keys, so it is important to intelligently disperse the keys. Try to figure out who will be together and can share. And we all know those people who are not to be trusted with one of the precious keys.

Ideally, your room should be for sleeping only. Find somewhere else to hang out. This helps keep your room clean and places the eviction risk on your friends.

Making Space Don’t be that person that brings too much to OU-Texas. You need an OU based outfit for each day you are there, some underwear, toiletries and maybe a pillow and blanket if you get stuck sleeping on the floor. You can also fill the tub or sink with ice instead of bringing a cooler to save room for bags.

Know your room Number This one may sound like a no-brainer, but after a long day screaming “Texas sucks,” it is easy to go back to your hotel and think “Wow, all these rooms look the same.” There are going to be some angry Texas fans at your hotel, and they probably wouldn’t be happy if you were mistaking their room for yours. Maybe even take a photo of the door’s number placard on your phone and temporarily set it as your background just in case.

If You Get Kicked Out Everybody knows someone who has been kicked out of his or her room at OU-Texas. Most people will deny responsibility for the incident, but chances are you are breaking more than half of the hotel’s rules. If you do get kicked out, make sure you have a back-up plan. There is likely someone you know who likes his or her space and only wanted four people in the room. Make sure you know where that room is, though you may not want them to know that’s your back-up plan.

Don’t plan to sleep I know I just said your room should be for sleeping only. Well, you must remember that this is OU-Texas, so the only person who needs sleep is the person driving you home.

If you’re trying to feed a pack on a budget, Serious Pizza is your best bet. Shovel down huge slices of pizza topped with a variety of sauce, veggie and meat options, including pesto, buffalo sauce, sun dried tomatoes and classic meats. Even the vegans have options here.

Leave the car in Norman. Unlike Oklahoma City, Dallas boasts a light-rail line that can take you almost anywhere you want to go. Whether you’re just in it for the game or you’re looking for some other forms of entertainment, Dallas Area Rapid Transit is a cheap way to see the city while avoiding trafﬁc and parking fees.

Getting around Mockingbird (Blue, Red, Orange) Venture out of downtown Dallas for great shopping at Mockingbird Station and to get your nerd on. If you’ve been wanting to check out the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, you can catch a free shuttle (or, if you’re adventurous, you can cross Central Expressway as the museum is within walking distance).

Deep Ellum (Green) OK, hipsters, listen up. Deep Ellum is one of the funkiest Dallas neighborhoods around – it’s Dallas/ Fort Worth’s answer to the Paseo, except Deep Ellum is bigger, better, cooler and more popular. Whether you’re interested in street art, jazz and blues, shopping local or dining, Deep Ellum has something for you.

White Rock (Blue) If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city, White Rock Lake is your place. This DART stop will take you to what is arguably Dallas’s most famous park and lake. If you’re up for a walk, head to the Dallas Arboretum on Garland Road on the south side of the lake. It might take a while, but the views are amazing.

West End (Red, Blue, Green, Orange) Downtown Dallas is always hopping, and the West End stop puts you in the middle of the action. From here, you can find fancy dining, visit the Dallas World Aquarium or talk conspiracy theories in Dealey Plaza. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination, so Dealey and its adjacent Sixth Floor Museum should be particularly poignant.

Victory (Green, Orange, Trinity Railway Express) Texas has three successful NBA teams: the San Antonio Spurs, who made it to the 2013 championship and have won four titles; the Houston Rockets, who have won two championships; and the Dallas Mavericks, who won the 2011 title. If you’re a Thunder fan wondering what it’s like to have a successful, championship-winning team, check out the Mavs in the American Airlines Center, directly across from this station. You can also get to the Amtrak station in Fort Worth from this station.

Gameday Transit If you’re planning to take the DART on game day, be aware that DART has special routes set up that are not advertised very clearly. Two stations on the Green Line serve the Cotton Bowl: MLK, Jr. and Fair Park. There will be a special express Green Line in operation beginning four hours prior to kickoff and ending four hours after the game. The express train will leave every ten minutes. This train will not serve many of the normal stations, including Victory, West End, Akard, St. Paul, Pearl/Arts District, Deep Ellum and Baylor. If you need to reach these stations, transfer to the Green Line Circulator at Union Station. The circulator will run six trips an hour. If you’re riding southbound Red or Blue Line trains, transfer to the Green Line Circulator at Pearl/Art District station. If you’re riding northbound Red or Blue Line trains, transfer at Akard station. There will be an increased number of southbound Blue Line trains, but other trains will operate normally. There will be specially marked Red Line trains leaving from Parker Road station and calling at every station until Cityplace/Uptown. After that station, they will head directly to MLK, Jr. station. *ESCAPE pro tip: expect delays. Something always seems to go wrong with DART when the most people will be affected. Leave well before kickoff, and consider using DART special buses.

With the extra expenses of gas, hotels, food and miscellaneous items, buying a ticket to the most exciting football game of the year may have just not been an option this year. The average cost of an OU-Texas ticket sits right under $500, according to The Oklahoman. But there are other ways to celebrate the Red River Rivalry from the comfort of Sooner Country. So, here it is! The top three things to do in and around Norman during OU-Texas weekend:

In my opinion, you can never go wrong with just inviting a few friends over for chips, dip, pigs in the blanket and watching the game in front of the big screen from the comfort of your own home. David Gately, political science sophomore, said he just plans to watch the game with friends and his dog. If, unfortunately, you have a friend or family member who is a Texas fan, invite him or her over! Make bets on who is going to win and rub it in their face every time OU scores a touchdown.

If you are looking to get out of the house, places like Buffalo Wild Wings are sure to have a good watch-party crowd with a lot of extra hype. The food is reason enough to head to the other side of Highway 9, but the big screen TVs don’t hurt either. Plan to get there early because this place is going to be packed. There are two Buffalo Wild Wings in the Norman area. The closest locations to campus are at 3010 Classen Boulevard and 2061 South Service Road in Moore.

For those 21 and over, an interesting bar like Don Quixote Club in Oklahoma City may be a fun option. When you enter, you are given three raffle tickets and receive one more each time you make a purchase. As the game plays, whenever OU scores a touch down, a $7 raffle of Don Quixote bucks is given away. Same when a penalty is given out, the amount goes by how many yard the penalty is. “I like to go because I usually leave with more money then I came in with,” said Eric Flores, publi affairs and administration junior.

Tom Hanks is a captain of a pirated ship, and his acting chops are pristine. Dramatic, serious and likely Oscar material. Watch Tom Hanks get out-acted by a pirate. Looks like a few hours of tension, yelling and oceans. Based on the true story of the Somalian pirate incident, this isn’t lighthearted fun, but it should still be good.

A goofy and gritty hack-and-slash ﬁlm starring Danny Trejo as a guy named Machete. Add in Charlie Sheen as the president, and you have a real winner. Gratuitous and ridiculous, this ﬁlm revels in the madness of action movie stereotypes. Over-the-top violence and sex; it’s not for your mom. Unless your mom is awesome.

A fake documentary ﬁlmed secretly and without permission in Disneyland. Oh, did I mention it’s supposed to be a horror ﬁlm? It’s in limited release, super indie and looks crazy. Plus, the movie is in black and white. I can dig it.
