Seen A Problem On Our Roads? Reporting It Just Got Easier

You will now be able to report highways issues more quickly and easily and track the progress through Central Bedfordshire Council’s new online system which has been launched in partnership with Ringway Jacobs. The new reporting system provides the following user friendly elements: Efficient- see potholes already reported by other people so you don’t need to report something we already know about and you can see the latest update on progress . Feedback – You will receive a unique reference number for their report that can be used with our new ‘Track It’ tool to monitor progress. Issues reported online are sent immediately to a Highway Engineer so the process of inspecting the problem and investigating it can start without delay. The new online reporting system adapts automatically to work on mobiles and tablets so you can use it when you are out and about. You can even take and upload a picture to give the engineers more information about the report.

For more information or to report a problem, visit the website. www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk and select the Transport, roads and parking tab. You can also report: • faulty street lights • Damaged potholes • Drainage and flooding problems • Overgrown trees and hedges • Obstructions in roads • Road signs

Revitalising Dunstable

By Cllr Ian Dalgarno

Brighter, longer, warmer days are always welcome as it puts a different perspective on daily life, but I’m sure you’ve been noticing more than just a change in the weather in Dunstable. Some of our key projects and developments are coming to fruition, such as the Priory View Independent Living Scheme, which opened recently, and has begun fulfilling one of our top priorities of helping older residents live longer more independent lives. Another major aim of great importance is to improve the health and wellbeing of people of all ages. That’s why I’m really excited about our proposals for a £20.1million comprehensive redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre, though I hesitate to call it that. Our ambition is to provide the town with much, much more than a leisure centre. It’s an innovative model that is completely different to anything we have done before in Central Bedfordshire. Rather than a refurbishment this will be a transformational project which, to all intents and purposes, will be a completely new and bigger building. Only the pool tanks and sports hall structures will remain of the current building, as they were constructed so soundly, but everything else will be new, including the way it will appeal to the interests of a broader spectrum of the community than it currently serves. We want to relocate Dunstable Library into the facility, as

well as Citizens’ Advice Bureau and various other services. With longer opening hours and greater flexibility, the bottom line is that it will be better value for you. So we are confident that the long-term benefits to Dunstable will be more than outweighed by the short-term inconvenience. This redevelopment, however, will mean the leisure centre is closed for around 18-months. We understand this is not an ideal situation, but we looked into building a new centre elsewhere, though would not guarantee that the current one remains open as it is in such a poor condition. The current location of the centre is another hugely important factor as it sits at the heart of the town’s cultural quarter and will contribute to the overall regeneration of the town centre. I can assure you that every step we’ve taken has been informed by our Leisure Strategy, which was published two years ago after extensive public consultation and is underpinned by studies, research and collaborative working with partners and governing bodies, such as Sport England, to determine the needs of the community both now and in the future. I am therefore confident that what we are proposing is the best solution for all of our residents and will meet the needs of our current and growing population. I would stress that nothing has been decided yet. We are in consultation until July 8th and we are listening.

Your views will help inform the next steps of the process. You can have your say either via

www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/consultations or you can find the consultation papers in the leisure centre and library.

G G G G G Celebrating 35 Years

In 1981 Antonia Vassallo Todaro worked alongside her husband, Papa Carmelo, at the family Delicatessen, Carmelo’s Continental, on Midland Road Luton. Being a working mother, with a husband and four sons to feed, Mama Antonia relied on the traditional Italian recipes that had been passed down to her through the generations. With a little imagination and taking inspiration from her mother, Cira, and grandmother, also Antonia, she added her own twist to each recipe, developing her own menu and with it an idea to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the people of Dunstable. At 2pm on July 5th Mamma Antonia finished working at the Deli as usual. At 5pm, accompanied by eldest son Carmelo Jr., her idea became reality as she opened the doors to Dunstables first Italian Pizzeria, Sorrento Pizzeria, located at 204 High Street North where it has remained for the last 35 years. Despite having to wait several months for an alcohol licence - diners had to bring their own wine! - the restaurant and Antonia’s menu proved a resounding success, so much so that within a year of opening the family decided to extend into the cellar. Sorrento Ristorante was born, offering a full A la carte Menu, Italian English & French food served by silver service. It was another hit! It seemed the town had discovered a taste for this new cuisine and the restaurant rapidly gained a reputation for it’s quality food, affordable prices and large, tasty portions. The family are now proud to boast that they introduced the town to many of the dishes we’re used to being served in Italian restaurants today. In 1989 the pizzeria was renamed Donatello’s, the cellar became Grazianos and eventually son no. 2, Michele, took over as manager. Today Donatello’s is much the same and Michele, along with the rest of the family, strive to uphold many of the Italian traditions and values introduced by Antonia. The joy of serving top quality, homemade food in intimate and welcoming surroundings remains at the fore, If you

12 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

like traditional Italian this is still the place for you. Whilst Donatello’s today still has an unbeatable selection of traditional, homemade pizzas and pastas, Michele has moved with the times and ever changing tastes by creating many new signature dishes which have become customer favourites. The menu can accommodate most dietary needs, with a little prior notice, vegetarian and vegan dishes are a speciality and gluten free options are available if requested when you book. If it’s not on the menu, with a little notice Donatello’s can create almost any Italian dish so just ask! There truly is something to suit all tastes. In 1998 the family decided to expand the business and acquired a century old cottage, at 91 Dunstable Street in Ampthill, which on 28th October, after five gruelling months of refurbishment, opened it’s doors as a 30 seat restaurant. Through continued success the capacity at Donatello’s, Ampthill was extended to 80 diners, set over two floors in five private dining rooms. The building has retained all of its charm with period features including beams, fireplaces and low ceilings, all creating a cosy quaintness and typical Donatello’s atmosphere. The restaurant has the added bonus of a garden and Alfresco dining area for diners to enjoy during the summer. Michele has also made Donatello’s available for private functions and both restaurants can cater for most events, whether it be a birthday celebration, pre-booked lunch buffet, wedding reception and, in Ampthill, even garden parties. The experienced and friendly staff will be on hand to make any occasion one to remember. Keen to expand the business further, Michele introduced a take away and delivery service so you can now enjoy made to order, authentic Italian food - “a Donatello’s” without having to leave the house (Ampthill offers pick-up service only). If you enjoy good food Donatello’s offers variety and versatility that only comes with 35 years of experience. Visit www.donatellospizzeria.co.uk for more information.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Marriage Tax Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying basic 20% tax? If you’ve just answered yes, then you’re one of 4.1million couples due a free £212 a year. @moneysavingexpert This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it and the likelihood is you’re in the 80% who haven’t claimed it, so I’m going to tell you how. Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If you’ve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than £10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under £42,385. You both must be under 80 (then there’s another tax break). Don’t overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as “I’m a volunteer”, “I only work part time”, “I don’t work”. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesn’t pay income tax? If you are, you count – simple as that. How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance – that’s the amount you can earn tax-free – to their partner. Imagine Tyrone earns £10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for £1,060 of his tax-free allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So that’s £1,060 of earnings she would’ve paid tax on at 20% that’s now tax free. As 20% of £1,060 is £212, that’s your gain. How do you claim it? It’s a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance or call 0300 200 3300. You’ll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, it’s the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up – people

18 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

do it the other way round and then wonder why they’re rejected. Do I get it every year? Yes, it’s done via a change in your tax code that remains, so it’s £212 a year gain every year and once you’ve applied it’s done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them. Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you can’t go back further than that. What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn't matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assessment bill. What if I’m a non-taxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying.

A Pensioners View

Intergenerational Fairness? By Mike Newman

“

'Intergenerational Fairness' is being presently dealt with by a government select committee from the Department Of Works and Pensions. Its members are looking at abandoning the 'triple lock' on the basic pension and means testing of the winter fuel allowance. The matter is being discussed when it is known where one in every three households have difficulty in meeting the payment of ever rising fuel bills, which reflects the statistic of 43,900 older people died from cold related illness last year - the highest figure for 15 years. The crux of the committee's work is to assess whether existing pensioners have enjoyed and accumulated much more housing and financial wealth, public service usage and welfare and pension entitlements than more recent generations can hope to achieve. The committee seems to have accepted the view that older people have been protected from austerity whilst the rest of society has had to pay. Older people are also being blamed for the fact

their homes have risen in value over the last 30 years, but the truth is, these rising home prices are due to lack of available homes and an economy driven by house price inflation. This appears to be a race to the bottom which helps no one and more or less condemns future generations to a lifetime of working longer, paying more and getting less when they eventually retire. An indictment of our society if we can not give younger people a secure and better future.

“

T

his article deals with the above title and the original appeared in the 'The Message', a newspaper issued by the National Pensioners Convention, after a statement from the conventions president, Ron Douglas. It needs to be read by all present pensioners and it may apply to future pensioners also.

When I read the preceding article in 'The Message' I felt obliged to get it to a wider audience. It seems disgraceful to me that a government has to look at pensioners to face such draconian measures. I paid 50 years to a National Insurance and would expect that governments over this time could have set the National Insurance Fund at a price that could meet its obligations - they have failed to do so. The fund was always operating at a high surplus to requirements. The surplus could be used by the government in times of need and was repayable. What we as tax payers and National Insurance payers should demand of all governments is that the N.I. fund should be ring fenced and its inclusive total fund should be used only for pension related purposes. The old mantra applies. We paid the insurance, we want that pension ring fenced now, so that insurance can be paid in full.

Have your say

WIN C

We’ve got family tickets for CHILFEST to give away! admitting 2 adults and 2 children to Chilfest on Friday 8th July.

To win tell us: In what year was Chillfest first held? Email your answer to win@thevinemagazine.co.uk

hilfest is a two day boutique music festival featuring original bands from the 80s . Held in the leafy and rural setting of Tring in Hertfordshire, with a capacity of 7,000 people for each day, Chilfest provides festival goers with an intimate yet lively atmosphere. The custom-built Chilfest arena comprises a top quality stage and sound rig, a wide variety of food and drink outlets and plenty of toilet facilities, providing all the ingredients for a great weekend of live music ... right on here our doorstep. Chilfest is the brain child of Tring resident Steve Butcher. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events and music festivals. An 80’s music lover, he had the idea of bringing live music from original bands to the local area whilst at a friend’s barbecue, the seed for Chilfest was sown. The 15th anniversary of UEP gave Steve the chance to realise his dream when he decided to stage a concert for the local community to celebrate his business achievements. Originally to be a one-off event, Steve set out to create a top quality music event with all proceeds going to local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care. In July 2013, the Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring. Featuring a lively pop night on the Fri-

day, headlined by Little Mix, and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 80’s, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel O’Connor and Carol Decker on the Saturday. The event sold out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, received many accolades and earned nominations in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards. The success of the event encouraged Steve to hold Chilfest again in 2014 This time plans evolved to include a Sunday afternoon with a more contemporary line-up for a younger audience. Over 15,000 people attended. In 2015, Pendley Meadow was once again filled to capacity when, for the third year running, Chilfest rocked Tring with two spectacular nights of top quality music. This year saw, for the first time at Chilfest, a team of talented performance interpreters who took to the stage with the bands and enthusiastically signed every single song for the benefit of the deaf community. Chilfest 2016 will take place on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th July. once again, bringing two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s. This years line up includes UB40, Heather Small, The Human League, Chas and Dave, Tony Hadley and many more..

A Foragers Tale

DIY Face Creams & Wild Edibles www.philosophicalforager.blogspot.co.uk www.philosophicalforager.blogspot.co.uk I know it’s all a bit trendy at the moment but I love foraging. What do we mean by foraging? Some people get themselves all upset and see it as thieving from the environment and stripping it bare. I guess it all depends on whether you choose to see the glass half full or half empty. To be honest I can’t find anything negative about foraging if you’re a responsible individual. The benefits to both the mind and body are priceless. You’re outdoors inhaling the essence of the seasonal air while you exercise your body rambling around the urban and rural Bedfordshire landscape. There is nothing like the ‘feel good’ factor of being outdoors and having a purpose. The thing is when you’re engaged in looking for your fodder the familiar becomes unfamiliar. We create a new window to the world that explodes into a magical world of wonder. The everyday walk or stroll creates meaning. It is all about the knowledge. Once you have some knowledge of basic edibles roaming around your own garden, path, or dog walk things begin to happen. The insignificant becomes magnified and we look at the world differently…how cool is that? When you find an edible it’s such a rush without the chocolate and it is free. Whoa… Life just gets better I become so immersed in the landscape I feel like I am in a living painting. I am the subject of my own painting unaware of my audience. I forget the world and my woes and the

28 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

focus of concentration is like meditating. I feel embodied to the landscape where I forget what my arms and my legs are doing…yep it’s pure bliss. See the outdoors (both urban and rural) as a free supermarket. I only pick what I need and we are talking a few handfuls. I bag a variety of free edibles on my way back from the shops (avoiding road traffic paths) and make a salad or salsa verde or a pesto with it. Yum what a treat and they are so damn good for you. How good is that? If you care what you put into your body then I guess you care what you put on it. I also make my own astonishing premium face creams and serums specific for my own individual needs. I create my own seasonal hydrosols and add my own vitamins, enzymes, compounds and amino acids to my formulas costing a fraction of the cost of high street brands. I will be offering some half day courses on making premium face creams and serums and also foraging walks with hands on demonstrations on making some amazing wild edible recipes. Take a look at my blog and see some of my stunning edibles and creams. You can email me on my blog (at the top right contact me box) if you would like to book a place and I will reply with dates, times, questions and cost etc. These will take place late spring, summer and autumn. Look out for me perusing around Dunstable. I am often on my knees eyeing up the weeds so stop and chat to me.

Thirsty Rose Face Cream Want to try making your own face cream? Here is a basic recipe for a nourishing night cream that anyone can make at home to enjoy.

The White Horse EATON BRAY 300 year old character pub set in beautiful gardens

• Beautiful village location • Warm and cosy restaurant and bar with character fireplaces

What you’ll need...

Market Square, Eaton Bray, LU6 2DG Tel: 01525 220 231

See website for our latest offers... www.thewhitehorseeatonbray.co.uk

This formula can be swapped with other oils. 90ml Coconut oil 90ml Avocado oil 150ml Rose water 1oz Emulsifying wax 30 drops Rose otto essential oil & 15 drops of Rose geranium essential oil (or frankincense) 2 drops Vitamin E oil (a good antioxidant)

• LIVE JAZZ on the first Sunday of every month. 4-7pm • Ample parking

How to make... Create two bain marie’s on your hob or stove. In one bain marie add your oils (and emulsifying wax) and in the other add your water. Heat both the oils and water to 70-75 C to kill any bacteria using a thermometer. Take both bowls off the stove and slowly add the oils to the water bowl. Using a hand held whisk beat until the oils have been blended with the rose water. Let it cool down and then add you essential oils and vitamin E oil and whisk again. If your mixture looks like it is splitting just whisk again until it cools. When cold, spoon into a sterilised jar and you’re done…Ta Dah. Label and date it and keep in the fridge. I tend to put it in a large pot in the fridge and then take out what I need in smaller pots for everyday use. It should last quite a while. Make sure you do a patch test before you put it on your face and always wear a sun screen.

Left High And Dry By Your Tumble Dryer? Thousands of Creda, Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers have been recalled as fire hazards and people are being told they have to pay for a replacement or worse, wait months for an engineer to come out. So our most recent campaign has been to push for justice and this month at Soapbox we’ve been inundated with complaints from people affected. Happily we have had great success resolving a large number of complaints, helping get free replacements and sorting out no shows, visit delays and faulty replacements. 530 registrations and counting... Our aim with this campaign is to highlight the injustice being experienced by you, the British consumer, and we will be presenting a list of complaints to the manufacturers, retailers and Trading Standards for the following reasons: • The risk of fire and its impact on human life and property • Unreasonable control measures suggested by the manufacturer • You are covered by The Consumer Rights Act 2015 • Dryers manufactured before October 1st 2015 are covered by the Sale and Supply of Goods Act 1994 If you have been affected, or have any other complaints, we would like to hear from you. Just go to our site www.soapboxshout.com and post the issues you’d like our help with. There must be so many of you with unresolved issues and problems that we and others are unaware of. We’ve made it easy for you to start and share your own rants and campaigns with friends and family and to find others who feel the same as you, but don’t know you’re there! You can also share advice and experiences and support each other on our Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/Soapboxshout/ We’re brave, we’re bold and we would love you to join us. Ready for Take Off? Now is the time of year where many of us are getting ready to take a well deserved break leaving the UK to fly off to exotic places around the globe. However, for some the thought of lounging on some sun drenched beach or sipping cocktails by the pool is tainted with negative thoughts and feelings about how they are going to get there. The thought of flying fills some people with absolute dread and merely thinking about getting on a plane can cause anxiety and distress. Those who have a flying phobia otherwise known as aviophobia may have an idea as to what caused the problem whilst others are at a loss to understand why they feel the way they do. Actually what is at work here is a part of the brain called the amygdala whose job is to sound the alarm when it detects potential danger. Although it serves a crucial purpose in times of genuine danger there are times when it overreacts and gets in the way. So what can be done to alter this naturally occurring stress response when is it unwanted? One simple, yet often effective positive action anyone can take is to regulate their breathing. As we become stressed our sympathetic nervous system kicks in increasing heart rate, sweating and muscular tension. Add in feeling sick and rapid, shallow breathing from the top of the chest and what we have is a recipe for really not feeling good! This can come on very

Addiction Agoraphobia Anger Anxiety Compulsions Confidence Depression Guilt

suddenly and becoming aware of it is likely to make us feel even more anxious leading to a vicious circle aggravating the very feelings we do not want. Breaking this cycle may seem surprisingly simple however using a different type of breathing can counteract the stress response by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system using our natural biological braking system to slow things down to a steady, more comfortable pace. Breathing is controlled by taking a shorter in breath and longer out breath regulated by making a silent mental count of in for 7 and out for 11. Being flight phobic does not have to be a permanent part of life. Seeking help from a professional hypnotherapist may offer a way of improving the travelling experience where the aim is to remove or diminish unpleasant thoughts and feelings associated with flying. Hypnosis is a natural state of pleasant relaxation where the therapist works with the client to facilitate the desired change, resolving faulty thinking and freeing the person from unhelpful limiting beliefs. It is possible to move from being flight phobic to someone who is better able to handle negative feelings leading up to the flight, feeling more at ease on a plane and looking forward to a fabulous holiday just like everybody else. The latest addition to the range is the T8 and the engines (plural) in question here are Volvo’s T6 petrol unit linked up with an 87hp electric motor, which on a 10amp feed found in most UK homes will charge up in three and a half hours. A Travellers Tale

The Three Cathedrals Part III By Paul Heley

Worcester Cathedral and the River Severn The three cities of England’s West Midlands, namely Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester are well known for their magnificent Cathedrals. I’ve always thought visits to these three superb cathedrals would make a nice overall “package” - but not all in one go; so it transpired that individual visits proved to be necessary.

We’ve explored the Cathedrals of Gloucester and Hereford in previous issues, we’ll conclude our journey with a look at Worcester.

Misericord : Killing a bull

Misericord : Man being eaten by a mythological beast

Like the other two cathedrals, Worcester goes all the way back to Saxon times and AD 680 when a priory was first started by Bishop Bosel. In AD 983 it was rebuilt by St Oswald and finally in 1084 Bidshop Wulfstan initiated further building which continued until 1504. Over the centuries the full gamut of English architectural styles were employed (and may now be enjoyed) ranging from Norman through to Gothic Perpendicular. It has an unusual crypt, a unique Chapter House, and exquisite wooden carving in the Choir. Like both Gloucester and Hereford, Worcester has a fine set of 39 misericords dating from 1379 showing biblical stories, mythological images and folklore. As with Gloucester cathedral, Worcester was caught up in the civil war between Stephen and Maud and twice ravaged, first by Maud’s army in 1139 and later by Stephen’s in 1150 and in 1216, it was also attacked by Faulkes de Breaute (a mercenary captain in King John’s

army). Faulkes is known in the South Beds area as the “Robber Baron of Bedfordshire” and was the reason for much public misery and outrage in Bedford, Luton and Dunstable in the early 1200s. Following his death in October 1216, King John chose to be buried in Worcester cathedral and his tomb may be seen. And later in 1502, Worcester was the chosen place for the burial of Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry 8th and first husband of Catherine of Aragon (whose marriage to Henry was annulled at Dunstable in 1533). Worcester Priory was dissolved by Henry 8th during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 but not demolished and immediately reinstated as a cathedral. However, it was badly damaged during the English Civil War but later restored by Charles 2nd following the Restoration of the Monarchy. Its setting on the banks of the River Severn is particularly pleasing (floods permitting!)

Pets

Helping The Medicine Go Down How to give your pet a tablet From time to time your pet may need to take medicines, but any pet owner will know that this can be easier said than done! PDSA Vet, Vicki Larkham-Jones, said: “If your pet is prescribed tablets by your vet then it’s important to make sure the entire course is taken. Not completing a course of medication can mean it won’t work as effectively, so your pet could take longer to get better. It’s always best to give your vet a call if you think your pet is fully better part way through a course of medication and are unsure if they need to finish it.” Some medicines can be given as liquids, but others have to be taken as tablets. Your vet will explain how often you have to give them, whether they can be crushed at all (some pills are less effective if crushed) and if they can be given with food. The easiest option, if the tablet can be given with food, is to hide it in your pet’s favourite treat, or wrap it in a piece of meat. If the tablet can be crushed then you can mix it in with a portion of their food. All the food must be eaten though, to ensure the full dosage is taken.

Close the mouth and stroke your pet’s throat in a gentle downward motion until they swallow. Once your pet licks their lips, this is a good indication that they have swallowed the tablet. If they are struggling to swallow you can syringe a small amount of water into their mouth to encourage swallowing. It’s a good idea to give your hands a wash afterwards. Giving liquid medication is a little easier, but quite similar. One person should hold your pet still while the other person administers the medication. This is usually done with a syringe (provided by your vet) and squirted into the side of your pet’s mouth while their head is held level. When you’re finished, reward your pet with plenty of praise so that they will associate the process with getting something nice at the end!

If this doesn’t work, or the tablet can’t be given with food then it may be best to get someone to help you to give them the tablet.

If you are still having problems, then ask your vet practice for more advice – the medication may even be available in a different form that is easier for you to give.

One person should help to hold your pet still; for small pets they can be placed on a surface (with no danger of falling) and stand behind the pet holding them gently but firmly. For larger dogs, they will need to sit on the floor, ideally against a wall, with someone steadying their body and head to limit movement. Have a syringe of water ready in case your pet won’t swallow their tablet.

PDSA is on a mission to educate the nation on pet wellbeing and is delighted that funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery is helping the charity to continue this vital work.

The second person should gently take hold of the upper jaw of your pet with one hand and tilt it upwards; this naturally opens the mouth slightly. Using their other hand, gently pull your pet’s lower jaw down by placing their fingers on the incisors and drop the tablet onto the tongue, as far back as possible. 40 40 40 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

Big Ideas, Small Spaces With space at a premium and the size of gardens in newbuild developments shrinking, balconies, roof terraces and tiny back yards are becoming the norm. If you’ve only got a small space, how can you give it the wow factor? TV gardening expert Charlie Dimmock, has some ideas of her own on how to jazz up a balcony and attract wildlife in the process. “Wildlife wants flowers all year round, just as we do,” she says. “Go for plants which give you a continuous amount of flowers. Some of the bedding plants are great and the more simple single flowers are better because they tend to have more nectar and pollen in them. Some petunias are quite good, as are marigolds, osteospermums and other daisy-plants like marguerites. “If you go for plants with double flowers they tend to be less pollenrich. Lavender and thyme are also good because they have a long flowering season.” A good variation of plants which provide year-round interest may also be the way to go. “I’d have two or three evergreen shrubs, not too big, such as a Daphne odora ‘Marginata’, which has a variegated leaf and fantastic scent in the spring. I’d also have a small pittosporum, as there are interesting

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky

Last Chance to Wave at Tim Peake: On Saturday 18 June British astronaut Tim Peake leaves the International Space Station after his six-month mission. In the lead up to his departure the Space Station delivers a series of spectacular passes over Bedfordshire’s late evening skies. Look for a solid bright white light moving on a roughly west-to-east trajectory every night from Thursday 26 May until Wednesday 15 June. The Station is easy to spot with the naked eye as it shines brighter than the stars. Check local press or online for exact timings. Catch Mars and Saturn in a Telescope: This

summer is a great opportunity to point a telescope at Saturn and Mars. Both planets are easy to find low down towards our southern horizon during late evenings. Mars glows a distinct orange colour. Saturn is that dimmer pale yellow point of light to the left of Mars. Even a small telescope will show Saturn’s rings.

Discover a Giant Swan in the Summer Night Sky: A giant swan sweeps across the

night sky this summer. Look high up towards your south-east for a bright cross pattern of stars. This is the constellation of Cygnus. The cross represents a swan in flight, the brightest star in the constellation, a star called Deneb, forms the swan’s tail. At around 7000 light years away Deneb is the most distant star that we can see with the naked eye! By Seb Jay
