Revitalising Dunstable

Support Your Local Market Traders For over seven centuries, Dunstable has been a very important market town, servicing the surrounding areas and villages. The market is in a prime town centre location, surrounded by a good mix of independent and high street shops. The Ashton Square shopping area is also home to a selection of specialist independent retailers where you can always find something a little bit different. This market is home to a number of regular street traders and to monthly themed specialist, farmers and craft markets. Harvey, who has run a stall in Dunstable for over 20 years and is currently selling menswear, said: “I have lots of regular customers, some who always like to come and have a chat if they’re passing, and others who ask me to order specific items for them. “I offer customers quality menswear items at affordable prices. No order is ever too small. So it would be great to see more people coming to visit us.” Harvey currently opens his stall four days a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. There is also a regular flower, fruit and vegetable stall which is open three days a week, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 4pm.

6

Dunstable is very lucky to have such a diverse small business community, so if you are out and about doing your weekly shopping or just wanting to browse, consider visiting some of our fantastic market traders and specialist local retailers.

Farmers & Craft Markets

Themed Markets

Dunstable Town Council runs monthly farmers and craft markets on the third Saturday between April and December. These markets have handmade goods and local produce, offering market shoppers a quality and individual shopping experience.

Themed markets run on the second Saturday of every month between April and December. For information, visit www.dunstable.gov.uk/towncentre/specialist-markets/

My Market Stall Interested in having a market stall? If you a local business interested in having a stall at the market, it’s easier than you think. Harvey, who runs the meanswear stall comments: “My advice to anyone reading this and thinking about starting a stall is to just go for it. The rent has been reduced and the licence fee is really reasonable, and I can now trade seven days a week if I want to. I have just renewed my licence for another year, and plan to stay here selling clothes long into the future.” For information on applying for a market traders license, visit www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk

Phase 4 Project at Incredible Edible Dunstable includes plans for six wheelchair accessible planters. Our Incredible Edible Dunstable growing space at Katherine Drive, was not initially designed with the needs of disabled people in mind, which is why we are developing a new accessible growing area that will be open to all. One in twenty people have some form of permanent or temporary disability which makes mobility difficult. Disability covers more than the obvious conditions such as visual impairment or confinement to a wheelchair. Breathlessness, the need to walk with a stick, difficulty in gripping due to paralysis or arthritis, lack of co-ordination, partial sight and hearing impairment. These can all affect a person’s mobility in the environment, especially when it comes to gardening. Advances in medical care and changing social attitude means that the numbers of disabled and elderly people wishing to follow an independent life are increasing. With this in mind I presented my idea to Central Bedfordshire Council Highways department. Could Incredible Edible Dunstable have the small grass verge across the road from the main garden and build six wheelchair accessible planters? This is a major job and CBC asked if their contactor Ringway Jacobs could help with the labour costs - the answer was yes! I also asked Dunstable Men in Sheds for help (www.dunstablemeninsheds.org.uk) I’ve been to see the residents in Priory View, and different groups of service users at the Disability Resource Centre, Dunstable and District Disabled Sports and Minds2gether. These groups are all looking forward to joining our monthly Come n Grow sessions on the first Saturday of the month from 1-3pm. I have been in touch with a number of care homes in the local area and have invited their residents to come and enjoy the garden whenever they want. If you run a group that would benefit from gardening in the community, please contact me for more details. The build is at the planning stage at the moment so if you would like to be involved with this exciting new project please get in touch. Sahira Ward 07905 116623 Email incredibleedible395@gmail.com

New £20m Dunstable Centre To Open On 13th May 2019

The new £20.1million Dunstable Centre will be open to the public on 13th May 2019. The centre will include a new, modern leisure facility, with a 100-station health and fitness suite, studios, along with a new library, crèche, café, as well as a flexible community space for other public and community services, such as Citizens Advice and day care. The brand-new library will be a large, bright and airy open-plan space, incorporating state-of-the-art equipment. The space will flow seamlessly within the main foyer and will be zoned for different activities. There will be a fully accessible ground floor library, with a new digital offer including public computers, iPads and a gaming zone, flexible space for activities, a children’s zone, and new facilities for teenagers.Councillor Ian Dalgarno, Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “At a time when public services across the country are

10 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

being squeezed, we have invested in this amazing new building, to give our residents in Dunstable state-of-the-art leisure and library facilities.“The old leisure centre and library in Dunstable were no longer fit for purpose or cost effective to run. By bringing services together under one roof, the new building will reduce running costs, while providing more flexible services and longer opening hours.“One of our main priorities is improving the health and wellbeing of our residents. So, we are delighted to confirm that the Dunstable centre will open on 13 May 2019, to help the community be active and access improved library resources.”Membership are already available for Dunstable’s new Lifestyles Health and Fitness Suite, offered by the operators, Stevenage Leisure Limited. Introducing All Saints View Community Choose Name For Houghton Regis Development

The local community in Houghton Regis took to their keyboards and forms to vote on a short list of names for a new, landmark independent living scheme in the heart of Houghton Regis. And All Saints View was the winner, with 41% of votes, for the building which will house 168 independent living apartments for over 55’s, alongside a public restaurant, bar and café, shops and health and beauty treatment rooms.Nearly 400 people voted on the short list that included All Saints View, Houghton Lea, Houghton Regis Central, Houghton View and Kings View.Councillor Carole Hegley, Executive Member for Adults, Social Care, Housing Operations and Customer Services, said: “Once again, the residents of Houghton Regis have been hugely supportive of this independent living scheme. Right from the outset, they’ve been involved in the planning and design stages, and the process of naming the building has been no different. All Saints View was a local suggestion that local people voted for, but there were so many fabulous suggestions that we plan to use some of the original 168 names within the building, working with the community to decide what goes where.””In

time, we hope All Saints View can be a fantastic community resource, as well as providing the sort of space, community and care that over 55s are asking for. Residents will have the freedom to be independent, as well as access to care and support if or when they need it.”The short list was announced at a ground-breaking event earlier this month, with the contractor Galliford Try Partnerships.Councillor Eugene Ghent, Executive Member for Assets and Housing Delivery, added: “This is a significant investment in Houghton Regis and it’s great that the key site, right in the heart of the town, now has a name that reflects the community. All Saints View is a major part of our plans to provide a choice of quality options for our older residents.”Initial works have started and the building will be constructed in two phases. Central Bedfordshire council have set up a new Facebook page, where they will post periodic updates about the ongoing works. New signage will go up in the coming weeks to showcase the building. In collaboration with community representatives, five names were shortlisted from 168 suggestions and were announced at the groundbreaking event.

Morrisons Houghton Regis delights local school children with free books this World Book Day

Pupils from Hawthorn Community School celebrated World Book Day on 7th March with a bundle of brand new books for their school library, donated by your local Morrisons in Houghton Regis. The books were gifted to the School thanks to a partnership between the Morrisons Foundation and the National Literacy Trust. The aim of the partnership is to help children from local communities to fall in love with books and reading. The books were presented to pupils by Sandra Gibb, Community Champion at the local Morrisons in Houghton Regis, who said: “I'm delighted to be donating these new books to a local school. There’s a great selection and I hope that every pupil will be able to find a story they will enjoy.” The donation is part of a national project funded by the Morrisons Foundation, which saw every Morrisons store across the country donating a bundle of books to a local primary school - meaning more than 7,300 brand new books into hundreds of schools. Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Morrisons to bring the gift

of reading by donating brand new books to primary schools throughout the UK.” The Morrisons Foundation awards grants for charity projects which make a positive difference in local communities. Charities are encouraged to visit www.morrisonsfoundation.com to find out how to apply for a grant.

A word from Sandra Gibb,

Morrisons Community Champion in Houghton Regis...

February 4th was World Cancer Day and if you popped in to our store in Houghton Regis you would have noticed various fund raising events taking place. It is now my pleasure to announce that, thanks to our customers, colleagues and staff, £669.00 was raised for cancer charity Clic Sargent. We began our partnership with Clic Sargent two years ago and in that time we have held fund raising event both within our store and also in the community. In year one the various events raised £3,215.36 increasing to £4,977.55 in year two. This means that together we have raised a total amount of £7,779.81 for this fantastic charity! I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to everyone who has given so generously and helped us reach this fantastic amount. In the coming weeks, watch out in-store for information on our Easter celebrations and company wide Mad Hatters Tea Party events. Until next time, keep smiling!

local Notices Make A Difference This Dementia Action Week Inclusion is the theme of this year’s Dementia Action Week, 20th - 26th May.

CARERS DROP-IN

(Langdale Rd, Dunstable)

Caring can be very isolating and our carers drop-in/ support group is intended to be a place where carers can meet with other carers, gain support, and have some time away from their caring roles.Tea, coffee, sandwiches and a friendly face are always available for anyone who drops in.

Who is the group for? Anyone who is or was a carer for another person.

How much does it cost? There is no charge to come but there is a cost of £1.50 if you would like to have lunch with the rest of the group.

When does the group meet? On the Þrst Thursday of every month.

Many people will know someone or are directly affected by dementia – in Bedfordshire more than 6,800 people are living with the condition. However public anxiety and a sense of social awkwardness contribute to the isolation that people living with dementia experience. Alzheimer’s Society is calling for people to get involved and focus on inclusion, taking action so people affected can stay connected to the things they love for longer. It can be as small as continuing to stay in touch – talk to and visit friends, family and neighbours with dementia – or learning more about the condition and volunteering with Alzheimer’s Society to help someone in your local area. Communities and businesses working to become dementia friendly in Luton, Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough are planning events and Alzheimer’s Society will have a variety of activities during the week. An interactive map of events is live on Alzheimer’s Society’s website. To find your nearest one or to access materials to get involved and take action, visit alzheimers.org.uk/DAW Alzheimer’s Society needs more volunteers in Luton and Dunstable, to enquire about opportunities available contact Josh Pearce, Volunteering Officer for the area on 07766 058767 or email volsbedford@alzheimers.org.uk

UNDER STARS, BY A CAMPFIRE, A GIN WAS BORN L

ocated on the borders of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire is a business likely to interest a lot of you out there, the multi award winning Puddingstone Distillery.

Opened in November 2016 by husband and wife team, Ben and Kate Marston, Puddingstone Distillery has racked up no less than five international spirits awards plus critical acclaim from drinks writers and judges. The distillery shop and tasting area, decked out in reclaimed timber and copper is in stark contrast to the gleaming stainless steel stills that sit proudly in a bright, almost laboratory like environment. If you want to know more about what goes on within the distillery then the hugely popular tours, tasting events and cocktail masterclasses are highly recommended. It is at the distillery that Ben and Kate produce their core Campfire Gin range, consisting of a very smooth Navy Strength Gin, a complex but versatile Cask Aged Gin and a juniper/citrus led

Winner – World’s Best Martini Challenge 2019 London Dry Gin which this year, along with the faintest waft of vermouth, ensured the distillery was awarded winner of the 2019 World’s Best Martini Challenge. The focus here is very much on classic gin styles with a contemporary twist but collaborations are also key to Puddingstone Distillery’s success. A unique partnership with Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust has resulted in the distillery helping to clear Himalayan balsam, a non-native invasive plant species from local rare chalk streams and using its flower in a special edition summer gin. This year Ben and Kate are delighted to be working with the Boxmoor Trust who have given them access to very rare, Hertfordshire cultivated juniper. WHAT IF?

A Frequently Asked Question -

our imagination. Just think about the consequences. But the history of Britain over the centuries is riddled with “What ifs?”, and had the outcomes of so many battles, conflicts, skirmishes, arguments, and even simple domestic events been different then, as in the above Hitlerian cases, our lives today could well be utterly different in so many ways. We might even be a different Another two “what ifs” from WW2 :- “What if Hitler people altogether. had been a much better military strategist – and hadn’t We can go back 2000 years and ask “What if the refused advice from his generals and others during the Romans had not invaded in AD 63 and stayed until the War?” Had the German army immediately followed early 5th century?” An answer is that we would have rethe retreating British forces across the Channel after mained a primitive Celtic society, I suppose. And there’s Dunkirk, could we have done much about it? There another question along these lines which asks “what did are many opinions which say that England would have the Romans do for us?” to which the answer is “a hell been easily overrun and that Captain Mainwaring and of a lot”. We can then ask “What if the Saxons and the his Dad’s Army pals wouldn’t have lasted for long. Vikings hadn’t followed the Romans, first as invaders And “What if Hitler had had a bit more faith in his invincible “Turpitz” battleship during the Arctic convoys and then as colonisers?” One of the answers to that question is that we might not now be speaking English to Murmansk?” Had he let this monster loose it could but some some other language more closely allied to have seen the end of those convoys to Russia rather Latin. The mind boggles! than allowing it to linger and doing nothing for ages in But one of the real biggies when it comes to “what protected fjords before our bombers finally finished it ifs” is “What if the Saxon King Harold had won the off in Tromso fjord in 1944. Battle of Hastings in 1066 (as he nearly did)?” It would It’s easy to see that if Hitler had played his cards differently in these (and other) instances, the result of the War have meant that the Norman dynasty would not have - and how we now live - could have been almost beyond had the enormous effect it did have upon England – it There’s a blinding example which is still left unanswered. It is “What if David Cameron had never set up the Referendum resulting in the current fiasco over Brexit?” Presumably this infuriating consequence will (somehow) be resolved in the near future. But then what?

completely revolutionised the whole country and culture - and we could well have remained more closely tied to the former Anglo-Scandinavian pattern of rule. And, horror upon horror, the Norman King Henry 1st would not have laid the foundations of present day Dunstable. What a terrible thought! Then another “what if ” which has had tremendous outpourings both in this country and also on the Continent is “What if Henry Tudor had not beaten King Richard 3rd at the Battle of Bosworth field in 1485 to become Henry 7th and thereby start the Tudor dynasty which lasted until 1603?” The ramifications of this “what if ” are legion and have effects which can still be felt today. Not so much with regard to Henry 7th but certainly with regard to his son, Henry 8th. For example “What if his first wife, Catherine of Aragon been able to produce a son and heir?” Just think what that could have meant. Perhaps there wouldn’t have been five other wives. Perhaps there wouldn’t have been the need (as Henry saw it) for the Reformation. And this would have meant that we remained a catholic country; that there would be no Church of England (and that we would have been spared the centuries of religious barbarism when both Catholics and Protestants committed unspeakable atrocities against each other). It depends upon your religious standpoint, of course, as to which side you favour and whether you consider the savagery conducted by one faction upon the other to have been justified. Still with Henry 8th, “What if he had decided to carry on with his plan to make Dunstable Priory the Cathedral of Bedfordshire?” I wonder what difference that would have made to the town? But, don’t you think, the city of Dunstable somehow has a nice ring about it?!! Then during Elizabeth 1st’s reign and the time of the Spanish Armada in 1588, “What if the ill suited Spanish commander, the Duke of Medina Sedonia, listened to his knowledgeable Admiral regarding naval tactics?” The outcome could have been very different. The Duke had been given inviolable instructions from King Philip 2nd as to how to proceed, and in following these instructions to the letter he was intransigent even though there were unforeseen opportunities which arose where the Spanish could have held definite advantage over the English. But like Hitler three and a half centuries later, he didn’t take the advice of his very experienced second-in-command but stuck rigidly to his instructions and missed chance after chance. And then he got his ships trapped – and largely defeated - at the Battle of Gravelines outside

Calais. From here he had to limp back home with only half his original fleet and with Philip’s plans completely astray. But it had been a very close thing indeed and the English fleet could easily have been defeated more than once. And had they been, and had the Duke of Medina been able to link up with planned massive forces in Flanders, England could have been invaded and overrun. It would have meant that the catholic King Philip would have taken control of this country. How do you fancy that? And still regarding the never ending Catholic-Protestant bitterness which plagued the 16th and 17th centuries in particular, we come to the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. Queen Elizabeth 1st had died in 1603 to be succeeded by King James 6th of Scotland and 1st of England. James was the son of the extremely devout catholic, Mary Queen of Scots, and this made English catholics feel that they would have a much easier ride under James. But James had not seen his mother since the age of one and had been raised as a strict Scottish Presbyterian which made him fiercely anti-catholic. So the catholics didn’t get what they’d hoped for. Consequently, a bunch of fanatical catholics under the leadership of Robert Catesby plotted to blow up the King and all the MPs at the state Opening of Parliament on November 5th. Their plan was that, following the chaos of having neither a government nor a monarch, the Spanish King Philip (him again!) would step into the breach, take over the reins, and return England to Rome. And they nearly succeeded; but just in the nick of time the explosives expert in their group, Guy Fawkes, was apprehended as he was about to light the fuse. So, the plot was foiled and we might ask “What if the Gunpowder Plot had succeeded?” Had it done so, it would have meant “third time lucky” in the attempt to return England to Catholicism: the first being during the barbaric reign of Mary 1st, the second being following the Spanish Armada, and the third being the aftermath of the Gunpowder Plot. And had the latter succeeded, it could have meant that England became part of catholic western and southern Europe once again and that it was separated from northern Lutheran and Protestant Europe to which it is more closely allied today. But would a return to Rome make any difference regarding our being more kindly judged by our EU “friends” as to whether we are in, or out, of the European Union, I wonder? Without a doubt, quite a few more “what ifs” will follow. Issue 88 • April / May 2019

Health

Living With Dementia Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity, working tirelessly to challenge perceptions, fund research and improve and provide care and support.

As Dementia Action Week takes place between 20th – 26th May, the charity helps sort the facts from the fiction. Alzheimer's disease and dementia are the same thing

FALSE Dementia is the name for a group of symptoms that commonly include problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception. Dementia can be caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common. Some other less common types of dementia include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). Each type may typically cause a different pattern of symptoms and respond differently to treatments, as different parts of the brain are affected. In the UK today, there are over 850,000 people living with a form of dementia – of this over 1,800 are living in Luton and over 5,000 in central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough. Every three minutes someone will develop symptoms - making it one of the biggest health challenges of our time.

Only elderly people get dementia than men are currently living with

FALSE Age is the biggest risk factor for dementia, but at least 42,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 are living with the condition. This is called young-onset dementia. Certain types of dementia like fronto-temporal, more typically set in before the age of 65. Some very rare genetic mutations can lead to dementia in the thirties, or even childhood.

Women are more likely to get Alzheimer’s

TRUE Women with dementia outnumber men with the condition almost two to one, and brain cells die a lot faster in women than in men. It is not fully know why this is the case, but one of the main theories rests with the female hormone, oestrogen. Oestrogen has a protective effect on blood pressure and brain cognition. During the menopause women stop producing as much oestrogen, which could explain why more women

dementia.

You will get dementia if one of your parents had it

FALSE Most dementias are not passed down through the family, and more than 99% of Alzheimer’s disease cases are not hereditary. Genetic links are more common in rarer types of dementia, like fronto-temporal dementia (FTD), which make up a tiny fraction of all cases. About 3% of people develop Alzheimer’s disease before they are 60. This is most likely due to a faulty gene which is passed through the family. To date, Alzheimer’s Society has funded over £2 million of research into the genetic causes of dementia to help develop new therapies.

Health Organisation, 14% of Alzheimer’s disease cases worldwide are potentially attributed to smoking. The two most common forms of dementia, Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia have both been linked to problems with the vascular system. It is known that smoking increases the risk of vascular problems, like strokes or small bleeds in the brain, which are risk factors for dementia. It’s difficult to know the extent that tobacco increases your risk of developing dementia.

A Mediterranean diet lowers your risk

TRUE

What is good for your heart is good for your head and what you eat could lower your risk of developing dementia. Mediterranean diets are traditionally high in fruits, vegetables, legumes and cereals, with moderate consumption of oily fish and dairy, and low in meat, sugar and saturated fat. Most fat in this type of diet comes from olive oil, and alcohol is consumed in moderation with meals. Inflammation in the brain is associated with Alzheimer's disease, and there are signs that following this diet could reduce such chemical inflammation. Recent research has also suggested that the low levels of cholesterol in this diet may be linked with better memory.

There is no cure for dementia

TRUE Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Of the top ten causes of death, dementia is the only one that we can’t cure, prevent or even slow down. It is only through more research that we can understand what causes dementia, develop effective treatments, improve care and one day find a cure. More than a quarter of a billion pounds has been pledged in partnership towards the UK’s first ever Dementia Research Institute (DRI) – £190m from Medical Research Council, £50m from Alzheimer’s Society and £50m Alzheimer’s Research UK. The DRI is a unique collaboration bringing together the brains of six universities across the country with hundreds of world-leading researchers working tirelessly to beat dementia.

There is nothing I can do to help someone with dementia

FALSE

a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected, supported, and confident they can contribute to community life for as long as possible. Individually people can become a Dementia Friend, gaining a better understanding of what it's like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action. There are already 2.8 million Dementia Friends in England and Wales - of this over 17,700 are living in Luton and Bedfordshire. Volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society can be very rewarding and there are various opportunities in Luton and Dunstable.

The White Horse EATON BRAY 300 year old character pub set in beautiful gardens

10 minute Sketch by Dr Lorna Moore

Yes, it’s true, anyone can draw and this column will give you inside tips on how to learn to observe and train your hand/eye coordination.

• Beautiful village location

• Warm and cosy restaurant and bar with character fireplaces • Ample parking

Following on from blind drawings in my last column, in this 10 minute exercise you may look at your piece of paper and you need to work quickly. Find a picture of a landscape (or copy mine) and hold your pen at the end, letting it hang like a dropper (just like before). If this feels odd, you will get used to it. Time yourself 10 minutes and begin to draw holding the pen upright and loose. I started where the curve of the water and land meet. Allow the pen to caress the page lightly, to dance across the paper, trying your best not to control it. Let your eyes flicker constantly between drawing and image. Experiment with the type of marks you make; some may be broken and/or wavy lines but try to avoid straight lines. Keep going and don’t stop. It will feel like the pen has a life of its own. If you look at my water marks they are shorter and lighter, and more apart, as they get closer to the land so you get a feeling of distance. What you’re doing here is not allowing thinking to get in the way. Enjoy the freedom of letting go and not having a care about what it looks like. Practise with a variety of images. It is key to work fast so time yourself. Soon you will feel good about mark making. Always do your ‘blind’ drawings first and use a pen so you can’t rub it out. Remember mistakes are progress so enjoy making them. Lesson three, next issue...

Looking Up! mark@plumbingandgas.org.uk

April & May 2019

Identify the Pole Star: Look up towards your north-east on any clear spring evening and you’ll see the constellation commonly known as The Plough. It goes by different names; you might know it as the Big Dipper, the Great Bear or the Saucepan. Did you know that you can use this constellation to find the Pole Star? It’s easy to do. Start with the three bright stars that form the handle and follow the pattern around the four stars that make up the pan. From the last two stars continue an imaginary line out across the sky to next brightest star. That’s your Pole Star!

PER TREATMENT

Your first choice for lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. Fortunately, many of our Complete Programme customers enjoyed the full range of our treatments, including Oasis – our triple action moisture managment treatment – that benefitted their lawns during the heat. Our Enhanced Programme customers have the option of either an Oasis treatment or to have their lawn aerated – a process that creates deep channels into

the root zone to let in vital light, air, water and nutrients. Finally, our NutraGreen Programme caters for those who only want the essentials covered: four treatments to feed their lawn. Easy payment options include Direct Debit, credit & debit card and BACS.

Let us take the hassle out of caring for your lawn. Contact your local branch today.
