Make Your Mark Young people across Central Bedfordshire are being asked what issues matter most to them. It is part of the annual Make Your Mark ballot, the largest consultation of young people in the country – and Central Bedfordshire Youth Parliament is taking part. The national ballot runs from 12th August until 5th October, and young people across the country will be asked what issues matter most to them, in order to determine what is debated by the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) in the House of Commons on 11th November. Voting takes places both online and through ballot papers issued in schools and youth centres. Ten topics will be available to choose from on the initial Make Your Mark ballot paper, with the five most popular topics among young people going on to be discussed by MYPs in their November debate, chaired by the Speaker of the House of Commons Rt. Hon. John Bercow MP and broadcast live on BBC Parliament. Last year’s Make Your Mark ballot saw 970,000 young people taking part, making it the largest youth consultation of its kind in the UK. Any schools, colleges or youth organisations wishing to take part should contact Lisa Wright, Senior Youth Worker, at lisa.wright@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk
Learn How To Check A Used Car
Central Bedfordshire Council have teamed up with Central Bedfordshire College motoring students to show you exactly what you need to look for when buying a new car. Buying a car, new or second hand, is always an exciting investment but it goes without saying that tests and inspections should be carried out before you part with your hard earned cash. The good news is you can do them all by yourself with the help of a video tutorial they have produced, watch the video at www.thevinedirectory.co.uk for tips on what to look out for. The video covers important checks such as looking for rust, checking oil levels, finding bumps and dents, checking brakes and gears as well as basic electric and tyre checks. The checks are all simple and can be done by anyone regardless of experience.

Retains Green Flag Priory and Grove House Gardens in Dunstable are named as among the best in Britain More parks and green spaces than ever will be flying the Green Flag Award this year – more than 1,600 across the UK and Priory and Grove House Gardens in Dunstable are among the very best in the UK – and that’s official. The gardens are among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Dunstable Town Councillor Liz Jones, Chair of the Grounds and Environmental Services Committee said: “We are delighted to have retained our Green Flag Awards again in 2016 and I was very proud to be able to attend the award ceremony in Nottingham to collect this year’s flags. The awards are testament to the hard work that the Town Council staff and the wider community put in to maintaining these award winning spaces for all to enjoy’’ International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards. “All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

New Lipreading Class in Dunstable
Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem?Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they use all the advances in modern technology, but even the best aids don't cure hearing loss. It is still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost.Research has shown that joining a lipreading class helps to avoid the damaging social isolation that can accompany hearing loss. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes help your ears fill in the things you miss. They are small friendly classes, and as well as learning lipreading we cover, how hearing works and the things that can go wrong, equipment and organisations that can help, strategies to cope in various situations, and much more, oh, and we laugh a lot!My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, andso I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. I teach in Beds. Bucks and Herts, and there is now a class in Dunstable on a Wednesday afternoon. For more information about this and other classes or to join a class, call or text me on 07741 095921 or email me at mb.lipreading@gmail.com

“This is living”
Building on the success of Priory View
Central Bedfordshire Council’s first ‘independent living scheme’ has been shortlisted for a national housing award. Priory View, on Church Street in Dunstable, has been nominated for Inside Housing’s Top Sixty Developments 2016 in the ‘Older People’s Development of the year’ category, alongside tough competition. Cllr Carole Hegley, Executive Member for Social Care and Housing and local councillor, explained: “The idea of independent living schemes is to offer older people the chance to live independently for longer, all the while enjoying a vibrant social life with the opportunity to access care and support if needed. It is all part of a bigger plan to make sure we have the right sort of housing available for our older residents.” “Priory View is more than alternative accommodation that an older person has to ‘accept’ because their home is no longer suitable for them. It is instead a place to celebrate life. The facilities at Priory View are fantastic but it was really designed to build a sense of community and for people to make new friends and be able to support each other.”
“We’re immensely proud of the scheme and are pleased that it’s being recognised nationally. That, added to the fantastic feedback we have had so far from our residents, makes us very happy indeed!” Priory View is a five storey building with 83 one and two bedroom apartments on a social rent or part ownership basis. The building includes a soon-to-be-open shop and a hairdressing salon, restaurant and café on the ground floor, all of which are available to everyone, not just residents. For residents there are also three beauty, relaxation and therapy rooms, a rooftop garden and five recreation rooms to socialise in. Resident Valerie Brown said: “I used to have a three bedroom house and after my husband died I was so lonely there, it didn’t feel like much of a life at all. But now I feel happy, I feel alive; this is living!” And the council plans to build on the success of Priory View. A planning application for another scheme in Houghton Regis is set to be submitted over the summer, providing around 170 apartments if approved, and Aldwyck Housing Association has just opened a similar scheme in Leighton Buzzard, called Greenfields.
For more information on all these schemes, visit www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/independentliving

THE HERITAGE PARK PITSTONE GREEN MUSEUM
A hidden Gem in Beds, Bucks & Herts Nestling in the shadow of Ivinghoe Beacon, lies a hidden gem of an attraction, just waiting for you to explore. The old victorian Pitstone Green Farm which fell out of use as a working farm in the early 1970s, is now being run as a charity by an enthusiastic bunch of volunteers from Pitstone & Ivinghoe Museum Society (PIMS). It started life as a farming and country life museum but has evolved into something much more complex, as the years have passed. It now incorporates an enormous range of exhibits to suit almost all tastes. We only open 10 times a year as we have around 50 volunteers on hand to help, explain and encourage visitors to get the most out of their ÂŁ6 entry fee. We have over 35 areas of attractions ranging from model railways to a Lancaster Bomber cockpit, from farm machinery to Basket weaving, from a huge working rack saw to a 28 litre gas engine. Try your hand at lace making or pottery. All our displays are in the old buildings of the farm, and you can see everything whatever the weather. Most areas are accessible to wheelchairs but a few are not,due to the nature of the old buildings. Bring your dog on a lead, relax in the lovely grounds or buy some refreshments, on sale all day long.
We are open on 14th August, 29th August (bank holiday Monday) 11th September and 9th October See our website for more details www.pitstonemuseum.co.uk

Self-storage is becoming more and more visible in our towns and cities. With new-build houses having less storage space and often no garages, people are finding it useful to have extra space outside their home where they can securely store any extra items. In addition, businesses can find it very cost-effective to rent a self storage room where there are no long leases and where more or less space can be taken as and when required.
Self -Storage For Home & Business Companies such as CityStore Self Storage in Houghton Regis offer such a service providing individual, secure storage rooms with 24hr access so customers can access their rooms whenever they wish. Here are 5 reasons why self storage can be useful.

It is essential to de-clutter your home whilst it is on the market to ensure that your house sells quicker. Research has shown that when potential purchasers view a home they try to imagine themselves living there and a clutter of personal effects can make it distinctly off-putting. Using self-storage allows people to store their possessions securely outside their home and make their house more attractive for prospective buyers.
Flats seldom come with sufficient storage space and spare bedrooms can quickly become part bedroom part storeroom for all sorts of things. Renting a self storage room can free up this precious space whilst still keeping your goods easily accessible.
Seldom-used items
Using a self storage room to store seasonal clothing and other seldom used/sentimental items frees up space in your garage or loft. Winter gear such as skis can be securely stored in a self-storage unit and accessible whenever necessary. Roof boxes are often used only a few times a year whilst on holiday and storing such awkward items at home can be difficult. With a standard height of 7ft within most self storage rooms and with trolleys and lifts to each floor, storing large or bulky items such as these is never a problem.
16 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk
Avoid long leases and expensive deposits. Self-storage is the ideal way to store stock flexibly and cost effectively. Storage is flexible because the customer can adapt the size of their storage unit whenever and as often as they want. If extra space is needed for the short term, for example due to a large delivery, extra space can be taken only for the time that is required. With self-storage there are no long term contracts and you only pay for the time you stay. Simple.
CityStore Self Storage offers a document storage service where we organise collection, storage, retrieval and re-delivery as and when you want. Priced by the box, CityStore provides one of the most cost-effective and easy accessible ways to keep your precious documents safe and secure. In addition to just providing storage space, self-storage facitities usually sell a full range of packaging materials such as strong packing boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and furniture covers. Overall, self-storage is a fantastic solution for both domestic and business customers alike. This is reflected in the fact that CityStore Self Storage only opened its doors in 2013 and has since welcomed over 500 new customers from Luton and Dunstable since then. Visit www.citystore.ltd.uk for more information.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis
SPAM Busting It’s an invasion of your home and private time!
@martinslewis
Spam calls and texts top many people’s list of pet hates. There is no perfect way to stop them, but things are improving with the launch of a new text service for mobiles. So here’s my SPAM BUSTER briefing on the latest techniques…
Stop Spam Calls
Stop Spam Texts
If a legit company texts you they should offer to let you text STOP so you won’t get any further texts. However, if it’s a spam text don’t reply, don’t text Register your phone number STOP as it can just indicate to them that your online with the Telephone number is real and it may target you more. Preference Service Instead, forward the message for free to 7726 (www.tpsonline.org.uk) (spells spam) to your provider – if enough people or call 0345 0700707. do it the number is investigated and blocked. It’s then a criminal offence You should also always block the number on your for firms to make unsolicited mobile too. If you’re still receiving calls/texts after calls to you. you’ve done the above, you can complain to the It takes around 28 days Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on 0303 to start working. If you get a call after that, 1231113. Give it as much info about the call/text tell them you’re on the TPS and most legit companies as you can, so it might be able to do something scarper. to stop it. I’ve had so many people ask me whether the Mobile: text they’ve received from a PPI company saying While 85% of people have registered their landlines, only they’re owed £1,000s is legit or not. I’ve even had 3% have registered their mobiles. Now a new service allows you to register it by free text. Just message to 85095 similar texts myself, and I’m definitely not owed a penny. with ‘TPS’ and your email address (needed to verify you These texts are spam – they neither mean identity). However the TPS is only a register for reputable EU companies. you’re owed or aren’t owed PPI. It’s just a shotgun approach, spraying Firms from outside the EU, and rogue firms from here may messages to everyone in still contact you. And if your number is targeted, the TPS hope of a response. As an may feel totally ineffective, so see registering as a way to aside, if you do want to check reduce but not stop calls. There are things some people buy to add on to their phone if you’re owed PPI, you don’t need to pay anyone. which require callers to select options before being put through – thus getting rid of almost all spam calls. Stop Junk And Snail Mail Addressed mail:
To stop unwanted snail mail coming through the letterbox, join the www.mpsonline.org.uk and after about four months the bulk of letters should have stopped. Though, unlike the others, it’s a voluntary scheme by a trade association, so those still sending aren’t breaking the law. For anyone who’s been annoyed with a leaflet with my face on it during the referendum, well that was nowt to do with me – it was done without my permission.
Unaddressed letters, flyers, and other junk: The Royal Mail has the online door-to-door opt-out system, which means they’ll stop delivering it to you. You’ll need to print an online form and post it back to ‘Freepost Royal Mail Customer Services’ (search for ‘door to door’ on www.royalmail.com) or phone 03457740740.
35 years experience in System Admin. For most repairs I will come to your home or office.
It’ll take about six weeks for mail to stop and lasts for around two years. You’ll need to optout again after this time. But not all junk mail is bad, and this will stop all unaddressed mail, including Government leaflets. Plus some junk mail can contain some top promo deals, so when choosing if to do these, balance hassle against opportunity.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Dunstable, Luton & surrounding areas areas and manager Tom Bliss
agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tom a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A Pensioners View
Social Care And The Welfare State Is It Functioning?
W
By Mike Newman
hen I use the term welfare I would imagine this includes Social Care, surely such a name implies the whole concerns the overall term welfare?
The original idea of a government that remembered the last austerity measures after WWI decided that this was not what would happen to the UK this time and so they formed a welfare state, now sadly depleted from its original conception, but still hanging on by its teeth and which we still pay for by taxation i.e. The National Health System. The government informs us that employment figures are substantial, so why is it that despite the money being there we seem to get less for it. So my question is, why is it that those out of work due to illness are treated in such bad way i.e. the new P.I.P. credit system? A BBC broadcast of its news on 26th March this year dealt with the matter of a lady who had multiple cancers. Her doctor and specialist notes were all part of the claim for P.I.P credits in place of the credits she was then receiving under the existing credit system. Regardless of the evidence for the P.I.P claim this ladies request for the credit was turned down by the company employed by the government which vets such claims and stated she was fit for work. The mind boggles. The person involved has had a right to appeal the finding and this appeal will be held in due course, but how long will this take? While she waits her P.I.P credit will not be available. Will full restitution be made if she wins the appeal? The crux of the complaint, in my opinion, is who are these people employed by the government? Are they medical professionals who would have the knowledge to make such a decision on a persons condition and
capabilities? Do they work with the government or are they an independent advisor? Does the government set targets for the advisors? What happens if they issue too many 'unfit for work' decisions? Will the government end their contract and employ a new company who might reach the governments targets? Regarding social care, Health Union UNISON has found 75% of councils are still using the 15 minute visit as a standard. UNISON argues that care is being compromised and staff do not have sufficient time to provide dignified treatment. One carer said "I had to visit a lady who was 102 years old, to shower her, help her get dressed, make up food, tidy her kitchen, give her medication and put her bins out, all in 20 minutes". Since 2010 social care budgets in England alone have been cut by estimated ÂŁ4.6 billion in the budget. The Chancellor was mindful of the problem and introduced a 2% local tax precept which could be spent sole on social care. The National Pensioners Convention proposes that standards of care could be improved by tackling low pay and poor training of care workers, whilst sharing the cost through a new tax funded National Health and Care Service which widens access to services and ends the needs of means testing. The National Pensioners Convention believes that by reforming the current tax relief on pension contributions through the introduction of a 20% flat rate tax for everyone, they estimate that ÂŁ12.5 billion per annum in order to properly fund our social care system. My opinion is you can only ask a government to modify its means of social care and welfare to make it work, but social care seems at the bottom end of things that the government feels are important.
Have your say

Looking Up! August and September 2016
August 11 - 13 is the maximum of the Perseids Meteor Shower. For 2016 astronomers are predicting an uptick in activity with as many as 150 – 170 shooting stars per hour streaking across the sky at the shower’s peak! This is an all-sky event, so no matter which direction of clear sky you look towards you’ll likely see a good clutch of Perseids from 10pm until 4am each night.

August 24 this year sees Mars, Saturn and the red supergiant Antares form a spectacular alignment in the evening sky. Look low towards your south-west as darkness falls for three bright points of light in a short vertical line. Mars with its red hue is the brightest member of the trio in the middle of the line. Above Mars is the pale yellow light of Saturn, while at the foot of the line is the red supergiant star Antares, whose name translates from ancient Greek as ‘Rival to Mars’ for its redness.
See the Milky Way from the Chilterns: The final week of September 2016 give us an opportunity to see the Milky Way from Bedfordshire. Choose a location in the Chilterns away from streetlights and look high overhead once the sky is fully dark. As your eyes adapt you should glimpse a river of faint dusky light stretching north-south across the night sky. By Seb Jay Image Credit: Jason Jenkins

A Travellers Tale
The Incas and Machu Pichu Part I
By Paul Heley Having had Peru on my "bucket list" for a number of years, I finally decided that if I didn't go now, I would miss the boat forever. As it so happens, I still left it too late by at least 10 years. After a very exhausting flight, we eventually arrived at Lima having transited at Sao Paulo in Brazil. Being somewhat shattered, I (and a few others) declined the invitation of a walking tour of Lima and wandered out by myself instead. And got hopelessly lost! However, I was finally rescued by some chap who knew where the hotel was. It was a salutary lesson and underlined the fact that Lima is a huge city with 10 million people making it Peru's principal city with roughly a third of the country's population. Up bright and early next morning for a flight to Arequipa further south. I was fortunate in having a window seat and, as we got nearer to Arequipa, the scenery below showed a virtually empty landscape of mountains, deep valleys, one or two lakes, and tiny roads with incredible hairpin bends zigzagging over the hills linking isolated villages. All very splendid! We'd been brought to Arequipa for the volcanoes since there is a volcanic range of mountains between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. And Arequipa has three volcanoes all to itself with pride of place going to Misti at 5825 metres (just over 18000 feet) above sea level. There is topographic evidence suggesting that each of these volcanoes has "blown its top" in centuries past such that Arequipa has benefitted from the rich volcanic soils. Peru is also very prone to earthquakes; within
the last 500 years there have been 8 episodes around Arequipa alone, the last one being in 1996. Fortunately, nothing happened whilst we were there! In the afternoon, we were shown around the city and first impressions were good - clean and tidy streets and attractive buildings in white stone. We were shown the cathedral which, in typical Catholic fashion, was very ornate and covered in gilt. Then round the Monasterio de Santa Catalina which is a huge complex. But, I'm afraid, I found everywhere rather dull and was not particularly impressed. Philistine!
Next day we left Arequipa on a particularly long coach journey heading into the Colca Canyon area. Initially, we passed through the poorer parts of the city and witnessed the contrast between the clean and tidy civic

centre and these poorer areas with their piles of rubbish and ramshackle houses and shops. Apparently, 60% of Arequipa's population has come from the Andean regions looking for a better life. But although there's no official racial discrimination in Peru, there's a marked social distinction between those of Spanish descent and well educated compared with those of Indian descent, of poor education, and speaking Quechan. Those from isolated rural areas cannot really compete when they arrive in cities such as Arequipa and Lima and find themselves in poorly paid, menial employment and living in poor areas where there are many half finished buildings (usually houses) indicating that the money has run out for the time being. After leaving the environs of Arequipa the country took on the character I'd seen from the air. Mile after mile between occasional small villages where subsistence farming seemed to be the only economy : hand to mouth stuff where the people work from dawn to dusk with no days off and no holidays. It must be a hard life and there's no wonder people seek an (imagined) better life in the cities. All the time, we gradually gained altitude (Arequipa itself stands at approximately 7000 feet) and stopped for coca tea at some place around 13000 feet. This tea is made from the leaves of the coca plant – the basis of the drug cocaine. But any narcotic effect is limited even though the leaves are chewed by native Indians as a supposed cure for stomach ailments and to offset the effects of hunger. For tourists, coca tea (found freely in most

Andean hotels) is claimed to combat the effects of altitude, improve digestion, and generally make one feel a little better. I cannot say that it tastes very nice but is improved with a little sugar. Later that day, we experienced the greatest altitude we would achieve anywhere on this trip – close on 16000 feet. It was noticeable that one or two in the party felt very whoosy and had to resort to a puff or two of the oxygen carried on the coach. The scenery amidst these volcanic hills was very stark, and vegetation was limited to grass. It is home to many llamas and alpacas. Both these South American members of the camel family have been semi domesticated with the much larger, stronger llama being used as a beast of burden whereas the alpaca is used for meat and for its superior wool. They effectively roam wild but are periodically rounded up and corralled in stone built enclosures. It's considered best to keep them separated if possible because they will interbreed; but the resulting hybrid has none of the positive traits of its parents and is really rather useless. There was also a herd of the smaller member of this family, the vicuna, whose wool is considered the best of all and is highly prized. These animals cannot be domesticated and are very nervous of people so rounding them up is difficult. I was told that 1Kg of vicuna wool is worth approx 500 US dollars. The fourth member of the family is the guanacho. This is completely wild, extremely nervous, and few in number having previously been shot for "sport". It is now a protected species. The coach journey ended at the Andean village of Chivay where we had a belated (and not very good) lunch. The meat was alpaca – which was as tough as old boots, extremely gristly, and barely warm. Chivay was also our overnight accommodation and I moved into my cold room. Later on – it gets dark by
6pm in Peru – whilst having a shower, there was a power cut which made life very embarrassing! To cap it all, the evening meal was no better than the lunch so, all in all, my rating of Andean food and lodging was about minus 3 stars! I've since realised that alpaca, like other meats (eg yak) can vary greatly from cut to cut. Another early start and another long day in the coach in prospect. The route took us along the Colca Valley with the real object being the Mirador Cruz del Condor : a spot
favoured by roughly 40 of the huge and majestic Andean Condors (a vulture). With the valley bottom more than 3000 feet below us and the Ampato volcano 12000 feet higher on the opposite side, it was a most impressive setting; especially when these enormous birds soared gracefully on the thermals with barely any wing movement. There were a few adult birds showing their white wing feathers but the majority were juveniles less than 6 years old. The adult birds mate – usually for life – and raise one or two chicks per year and can live for more than 50 years. Then, in total contrast to the condors, we were dazzled by the fluorescent colours on some of the tiny humming birds seen at various places throughout Peru. But what an amazing difference in size! As with every stopping point during the trip, there were stalls with all manner of touristy trinkets and fabrics for sale. Great play is made of how poor these native sellers are by our standards – as indeed they are. But they're not really poor by Peruvian standards; so the rule is to haggle – and keep on haggling!!
40 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk
Leaving the condors behind we retraced our route along the Colca Valley, back over the highest point on our trip once again (more puffs on the oxygen!) before taking the road to Puno and Lake Titicaca. Throughout these coach journeys I was left with a number of different impressions :1) when considering the emptiness of the place, the road surface is remarkably good. But there are very steep "sleeping policemen" found everywhere – even in open country for some unknown reason. 2) that there are many isolated crosses at the side of the road commemorating (so I was told) fatal accidents; 3) that there are hundreds of small cairns found everywhere which, apparently, give offerings to the gods ; 4) that some sections of the road are completely washed away due to streams rushing off the hillsides. I also learnt of the "halfway" religious world adopted by those living in isolated and remote villages. The official religion of Peru is Roman Catholic but many native Indians still cling to ancient tribal customs and shamanism; but "double their chances of salvation" by offering a token allegiance to catholicism! I heard of still practised ritual animal slaughter as an offering to one of the many gods; and of the former practice of strapping babies' heads to make them pointed. This was in honour of the god who lives in the "pointed" volcanoes. Fortunately, this barbaric practice has been stopped by the government. But I wonder...? Furthermore over the years, the government has stepped in to ease the lot of the peasants and also improve the schooling of their children so as to better their chances when, and if, they ever move to the city. Eventually we arrived at our hotel in Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. It was considerably better than the one at Chivay and the meal that evening was trout from the lake. Things were looking up!

Best Bulbs In Theen For Autumn Planting Gard Planting bulbs in the autumn creates an optimism and air of anticipation for spring, when everything bursts into life and many of the bulb specialists, mail order and online suppliers are offering new types and more choice than ever.
Here are just a few of the best bulbs for planting this autumn Crocus ‘Vanguard’ - This pretty lilac specimen bridges the gap between smaller-flowered, earlier crocuses and the March-flowering giants derived from C vernus. It needs good drainage and an open, sunny position to flower and looks good in drifts in grass mixed with short, early narcissi such as ‘Jetfire’. (www.suttons.co.uk)
Crocus ‘Vanguard’ Hyacinth 'Prince of Love' - Double-flowered hyacinths are a rarity, but this dramatic and fragrant variety with its denselypacked flower spikes looks great in beds, borders or patio pots. (www.suttons.co.uk)

Tulipa clusiana
Tulipa clusiana ‘Peppermint Stick’ - Not new, but worth a try. This pint-sized tulip, which grows to just 25cm, produces dainty flowers in April with deep rosy-red outer petals just edged silvery white. The inner petals show a deep steel-blue base when open in the sun. They originate from Allium ‘Silver Spring’ the Mediterranean and the Far East, and are popular in Allium ‘Silver Spring’ - A recent introduction from rockeries and wild gardens, Israel, the white lollipop flowers on 75cm stems or can be naturalised. are unique, with each floret sporting a distinctive www.gee-tee.co.uk). deep-pink centre. It flowers in May and June and 'Peppermint Stick' is widely available. (www.dutchbulbs.co.uk)

The Trophy was presented by Peter & Jacqui Masters, at whose home in Cheddington the club was born back in 1983. Over the years our flower displays have moved up a gear. Pete Rowling, our pot man, has come up trumps with his hanging baskets this year. Those on the Mens Changing Room are my favourites, although those on the Ladies changing room come a close second. The Green is adorned with geraniums and, may be, by the time you read this, by marigolds. Come down and have nose you will not be disappointed! If you want to combine a visit with GIVING BOWLS A GO then come down on a Tuesday at 2 pm or a Friday at 6pm.
