Dunstable Centre A Space To Read

Revitalising Dunstable

6

The warm weather is finally here, and the schools have broken Original pool after draining - 10th July up for summer. But don’t panic, we’ve got lots of fun activities to keep your kids busy during the school holidays, and beyond. Our amazing Dunstable Centre library opened in early June. This brand-new, fully-accessible ground floor library incorporates state-of-the-art equipment. We’ve already seen over 14,000 people come through our doors and over 500 new members join. The library also has held 58 events for children, with 1,162 children coming along to join in the fun. During the holidays, we’re running our annual kids’ Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, and we’re calling for children to sign up to ‘Space Chase’, which runs until Saturday 7 September. To participate, 4 to 11 year-olds just need to borrow and read any six library books over the summer. Children will team up with futuristic family, The Rockets, for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens. Young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way. To encourage children to complete their challenge, everyone who gets involved will be given a special mission folder which they will fill with stickers awarded each time they complete reading their library book. There will also be other some fun rewards along the way, such as colourin space glasses and a Space Chase Wristband. And the ultimate reward, when the challenge is completed, will be a Space Chase certificate and medal.

The Space Chase is one way we aim to keep children excited and inspired to keep reading, especially over the long school holidays. We will also be running lots of other exciting events and activities for families during the summer:

Dunstable Welcomes Anglia In Bloom Judges

le In Blo b a t s n om u D

Dunstable was ‘ Blooming’ on 17th and 18th July for the annual visit from the ‘Anglia in Bloom’ judges. The Town Council’s planters and hanging baskets overflowed with beautiful jewel coloured flowers Even the new large containers placed by Central Bedfordshire Council around the town received a boost of colour from bright geraniums and ivy - thanks to Dunstable in Bloom volunteers who planted them; cash from the Joint committee (DTC & CBC) to purchase them and Dunstable Discount, High St. South who supplied the good quality plants. Their visit started at the Old Palace Lodge Hotel and accompanied by the designer, Matt George, they toured the beautifully planted new garden which has been built on the site of the old Norman King pub which burnt to the ground in 2013. This attractive venue is already attracting many visitors. A full day and a half followed which included Incredible Edible’s new raised beds created for those with special needs but still enjoy gardening. Blow’s Downs conservation area always a lovely sight with all the chalk downland flowers at their best and providing such wonderful habitats for a huge range of wildlife. So much to see next in Priory gardens – the croquet players enjoying the sun, talks on the history of the Priory, new War Memorial and the

Physic & Medicinal border full of plants providing the Natural Health Service! After a well-deserved rest and Lunch in Priory House the tour continued. Up West St. a new project to see was the boat planted up with great enthusiasm by the Sea Cadets. Chiltern View Care Home Sensory garden was a delight. To end the afternoon a tour of Dunstable Cemetery which hopes to impress as it did last year. The following morning a new entry in the Best Community project was a visit to the Men in Sheds workroom. Here they recycle old wood into bird tables, nesting boxes, garden ornaments etc. as well as repairing items and helping with school projects. Another new entry was Hillcroft Allotments – the tenants have been working for months now tidying up the whole site and making it an attractive area for ‘Growing Your Own’ and socialising too in their new coffee/tea area. The very young ones (up to 4 years) at Westfield Nursery were a delight – showing the judges their planted wellie boots, wheelbarrows and lovely gardens incorporating the theme of the five senses. A short tour of Grove House Gardens, another lovely public space in the town. Finally to end the morning to see the gardens created by senior members of the community at Priory View. Their beautiful raised beds all cared for by individuals has now been expanded with a rock garden and new woodland area with shade loving plants. The roof garden gave the judges a final view of Dunstable and the Downs.

Green Flags For Dunstable & Houghton Regis A record number of parks and green spaces collected a Green Flag Award this year and, once again, four local sites have been recognised as being among the UK’s very best green spaces

Dunstable Cemetery, Priory Gardens and Grove House Gardens have now been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme for the tenth year running while Houghton Hall Park secured its first ever full Green Flag Award, putting them among the very best open spaces in the world. This year saw a record-breaking 1,970 parks and green spaces in the UK being recognised along with 131 sites in thirteen countries around the world. This international award, now into its third decade, is a mark of quality and is a sign to the public that the spaces boast the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent visitor facilities.

Dunstable Town Councillor Liz Jones, Chairman of the Grounds and Environmental Services Committee said: “We are absolutely delighted to have retained all three Green Flags in 2019 and to have improved our overall score and rating for Dunstable Cemetery. We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and these awards celebrate the work of the Town Council and the dedication that goes into maintaining them to such a high standard’’ International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “Each flag honours the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”

Houghton Hall Park was also among those awarded, securing its first ever full Green Flag Award. The park’s visitor building has previously been the recipient of various design awards, and boasts bookable meeting spaces, a dog-friendly café with both indoor and outdoor seating, children’s discovery area, and interactive interpretation about the park and other local heritage. The park and visitor centre, which are free to visit, provide easy-access paths and innovative natural play equipment, making the historic Houghton Hall Park a great destination for all of the family. Studham Common received the prestigious Green Flag Community Award award for the twelfth year running.

local News Wildlife Artworks Mark Local Cycle Routes In Totternhoe And Luton

Digital Fingerprint Artwork Unveiled At New Dunstable Library Central Bedfordshire Council, with the support of Sustrans, has installed two attractive bespoke pieces of artwork on national cycling routes in locations close to Dunstable and Luton Airport. The artwork is made from laser-cut steel, and has been designed to highlight the routes and provide attractive and prominent formal entrances which will encourage more walkers and cyclists to use the routes. In creating the unique designs, the artist, Stephen Pardue from interpretation specialists Differentia, took inspiration from local landscapes, wildlife and the history of the sites. The Totternhoe Green Lanes artwork is close to Dunstable on Sustrans National Cycle Route 574, at the start of the green lanes on Tring Road. These ancient green lanes allow residents fantastic access to the local countryside. The gateway is designed to attract and welcome residents, while also discouraging vehicles from parking across the path entrance. The Upper Lea Valley Way route artwork is alongside Sustrans National Cycle Route 6, close to Luton Parkway Station and airport. The gateway has been designed to encourage more people to use the cycle route, and make it more visible. The project, funded through Central Bedfordshire Council’s lottery grant in partnership with Luton Borough Council, is the last element of the LutonHarpenden cycleway project. Councillor Kevin Collins, Executive Member for Planning and Regeneration at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “The finished pieces are unique and attractive, and feature the wildlife and history of the area. They are designed to encourage the public to use these fantastic cycle routes, and enjoy the beautiful rural scenery that Central Bedfordshire has to offer.” For more information on the National Cycle Network, visit: www.sustrans.org.uk.

A unique digital art installation, which has been created with the help of four schools and Autism Bedfordshire, has been unveiled in the new Dunstable Library. The artwork named ‘Our Fingerprints’ has been a yearlong project led by visual artist Sophie Gresswell, who decided to explore how generations are leaving their own mark on Dunstable, and how art can better connect people to places. Sophie worked with Autism Bedfordshire, customers from Dunstable Library and pupils from four schools in the local area, including The Chiltern School, Weatherfield Academy, Lancot Challenger Academy and All Saints Academy to develop a film to be projected on Dunstable library’s new arena in the children’s section.

Pupils helped to create artwork including collages, interactive handprints and projections to reflect how they see Dunstable, its people and their place within the town. Their own unique fingerprints were used as the main theme of the final film to represent individuals working together to form communities. As part of the artwork unique light boxes featuring children's handprints and thermochromic panels which react to body heat have also been developed. During the unveiling, children from Lancot Challenger Academy and Weatherfield Academy who participated in the project also received an Arts Award Discover certificate in recognition of their hard work. Councillor Ian Dalgarno, Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “This is a really exciting project that has given local children the chance to create something unique and really special, which is now on display in our new Dunstable Library.”

MENCAP Launch New Social Group

Leading learning disability charity Mencap is introducing a new adult social venture ‘Limitless’. The aim of the social group is to encourage community inclusion and build on people’s independence – all in a safe and friendly environment. Inspired by the lack of social events aimed at people with learning disabilities within Central Bedfordshire, Limitless aims to bridge that gap and bring people together. Limitless is open every Friday from 11:30am – 1:30pm and will host a disco on the first Friday of every month, with a live DJ, buffet and raffle. In the other weeks, Limitless will offer a range of activities such as: a pool table, music, arts and crafts, slime making, board games, Hama beads, fancy dress, an 8-in-1 games table, musical instruments, and food and drinks. The activities will vary each week and on certain weeks there will be educational talks from organisations such as the fire service. The entry cost is £6 which includes a carer and all activities, food, and drink.

Bedfordshire Walking Festival This September sees the 10th anniversary of what has become an annual and increasingly popular event, The Bedfordshire Walking Festival. From humble beginnings in 2009 the festival has grown and grown as more and more people are walking for leisure and fitness. Despite council cutbacks the urban and countryside paths are still generally well maintained and being used more often. For some, the benefit of joining a walk enables them to explore of new places and new paths, whilst for others it is the socialising. Whatever the reason there is a good walk everyday in and around Bedford and not far from your door. Over the nine days from 7th to 15th September, there is a range of walks from one hour to nine hours duration, plus a range of informative walks of around 2-3 hours. Most walks are free and no booking is required. See programme for details. The festival starts on Saturday 7th with three walks over the day starting from the Heritage centre Bedford Street Woburn and all have a theme of 10. "The Ten Ten" informative walk starts at 10to10 followed at 11-00 by a ten mile 10 woods, heaths and copses walk and in the afternoon a 10k circular. On the last day of the festival and also from Woburn an informative walk for the world war two enthusiasts entitled "Ten Shun" starts from the car park in Woburn. On Sunday 8th just along the road in Leighton Buzzard a10k family walk includes a ride on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge railway whilst for those who like mystery walks meet Julian at the Library car park at 9-30. On Tuesday morning go to Rushmere for the intriguingly entitled "The Return of the Purple" or on Thursday join Mike outside Oxfam at the bottom of Leighton Buzzard High Street for a linear bus walk to Stanbridge and say "Goodbye Green Belt" as you make your way back via Eggington and Tilsworth. Do you fancy a challenge ? The weekend of 14th &15th sees the two day 40 mile Greensand Ridge Path Challenge starting at Leighton Buzzard on Saturday. If you can't come for both days why not come for one? The Luton & Dunstable areas are well represented starting on Saturday morning with an informative two hour walk around Studham Common. Sunday 8th starts with a 12 mile linear

Heard of Houghton Hall in Houghton Regis but never visited the park then find a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon 14th to join an informative ramble and find out about the restored Kitchen and Formal gardens and more. Further afield in the east & central areas there is a full day walk from Sandy Railway station on Saturday 7th and walks from Shuttleworth on Monday and Tuesday and on the last Sunday three walks from Ampthill park and an informative walk from Stotfold Mill entitled "The Mills of the Etonbury Greenwheel" In the north of the county there are some sixteen walks of varying lengths and types over the nine day festival including an opportunity to take a short ride in the new rolling stock on the Marston Vale line before enjoying an interesting and varied walk back to Bedford or Take a one way trip on the John Bunyan boat followed by an informative walk on the many bridges of Bedford as you return to the start. If Friday 13th fills you with apprehension join Roy on his Linear walk from Haynes to Bedford entitled "Scared of John Bunyan" and if that is not enough come to the Bedford cemetery on Sunday afternoon 15th at 1-30pm for an informative ramble entitled "Who do you think they were" For those who are baffled by maps, confused by compasses, daunted by digital devices why not join a one day course on Sunday 8th at Maulden Village Hall. A Local Folk Hero

Dun Robber the

Part II

Recap

In Part 1, I recounted the popular Dunstable story of King Henry 1st’s battle with the robber Dun and how he tried to trick Dun into stealing a valuable ring which had been stapled to a pillar – as shown in the town’s arms. And how this story was first recorded by a canon at the Priory sometime between 1280 and 1290 The story also told of Dun and his gang of thieves, and how they spared neither man, woman nor child; that they were ruthless robbers, mutilators, rapists and murderers; that they terrorised the highway such that potential travellers feared for their safety even with an armed guard. But since such travellers would be relatively wealthy (and likely to be Normans or Norman sympathisers), Dun and his Norman hating Saxons had no qualms whatsoever (and who can blame them considering the lot of the Saxon during the 34 year “reign of terror” under both William 1st and William 2nd). But when Henry succeeded to the throne in 1100, he was determined to rid the area of this plague and tried to improve the situation by cutting down the undergrowth either side of the trackway in an attempt to reduce the effect of sudden ambush. But, and in support of the story, it didn’t really work and Henry was reduced to offering the challenge of the pillar, staple and ring. In my attempts to discover if there is any truth to the story, in Part 1 different accounts by different authors were mentioned. Two more follow, both very different :22 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

7) According to both DCM Cox, Worthington Smith and Charles Lamborn, Dun also made a thorough nuisance of himself around Bedford and was responsible for many audacious crimes and masquerades, including robbery and murder. Although living a life similar to the fabled outlaws in Sherwood Forest, Dun was certainly no Robin Hood figure in that he robbed the Norman rich to feed the Saxon poor: no!, he robbed and murdered Saxons with equal impunity! Consequently, the whole area - rich and poor, Norman and Saxon - rose up against him and his gang and upwards of 300 people from Bedford formed a posse to capture him and bring him to trial. His gang members were either killed or they fled leaving Dun alone against the vigilantes. Although he fought bravely and fiercely, he was eventually thrown from his horse and, with his sword between his teeth, dived into the river Ouse and swam to an island in the middle where he rested for a few moments before swimming to the opposite bank. But his attackers had got there first and, again after a fierce fight and being already seriously wounded, he was overcome and dragged off to Bedford gaol. Following the flimsiest of trials, he was found guilty of numerous crimes and sentenced to be executed. Even on the execution platform, he fought his captors and the only way they could restrain him was to cut off both his hands and feet. This was clearly a “good idea” so they proceeded to chop off his arms at the elbow

and his legs at the knee, then his arms at the shoulder and his legs at the thigh until only a torso plus a head remained. Finally his head was chopped off and burnt and his torso cut into sections with each section being distributed around the county as a warning to any other potential wrong-doers. Rough justice indeed!

canon in the late 13th century has certainly spawned a host of variants nearly all of which have some individual and slightly different interpretation. Most, however, consider that Dun (however you spell his name) was basically someone you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark forest at night (or at any time). It has been neatly woven into the true story of how Henry 1st founded the town first called Dunestaple, then Dunstaple, now Dunstable and how the area was subjected to robber gangs of disgruntled Saxons following the Norman Conquest and the punitive reigns of both William 1st and William 2nd when the vanquished Saxons were reduced to little more than slaves.

8) A totally different story of Dun was written by AWMooring in “Dunstaple. A tale of the Watling Highway, the legend of Dunne the Robber” This version shows Dunne in a totally different light:he is portrayed as an honourable, chivalrous defender of Saxon virtues against Norman oppression and An alternative explanation Mooring weaves an extremely unbelievable fantasy and love story involving such unlikely characters as For what it’s worth, my take on the story is that it is the Saxon son of Hereward the Wake, a beautiful and basically a myth invented by this unknown canon in the chaste daughter of a rogueish Norman baron living in a late 1200s as an interesting story to amuse the masses nearby castle (Cainhoe near Clophill?) and the lecherous (and perhaps to alleviate personal boredom!) Abbot of St Albans (amongst others). He also brings in I don’t believe there was ever an outlaw called Dun local spots such as Maiden Bower, although I am prepared to the caves at Totternhoe stone believe that there could have quarries and the crossroads at been an outlaw gang in the Dunstaple. area who caused all manner of What is more, Mooring’s tale problems; and that they were a concludes with King Henry nambunch of oppressed Saxons in ing his new town after the robber a personal vendetta against the who had wrenched the staple hated Normans. from the pillar and had stolen his most valuable ring. Get Your Tits Out For The Babes New campaign urges support for mums who breastfeed in public A new awareness campaign is aiming to help mums become more confident when breastfeeding in public. The Luton and Bedfordshire #FreeToFeed campaign is being launched by NHS community services and local authorities. Businesses, members of the public and other mums are being encouraged to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and to help new mums feel comfortable feeding their children when out and about.

The campaign is building on a strong base. After surveying more than 350 local mothers, they found that 55% said they felt extremely or very confident breastfeeding out and about, while 32% were somewhat confident and 13% were not confident or not at all confident.

Matisse Style Fruit & Bowl

See website for our latest offers... www.thewhitehorseeatonbray.co.uk

It’s fun and exciting to experiment with line and colour. Henri Matisse’s work is based on flat colour, bold black outlines and motifs. I used a black permanent felt tip pen (make sure it is not water soluble as it will bleed) but you will need water soluble coloured felt tip pens. Draw the image in pencil keeping your pencil on the paper and draw freely allowing the lines to cross over each other. Let the lines swirl across the paper and go back on themselves all in one go. Go over it in black permanent felt tip pen. Vary the thickness of your lines. Get your coloured felt tip pens and use them like watercolours (red, green, blue, yellow) and black to create grey. On scrap paper make a mark in one colour and rub a wet paint brush over the top of it & mix. You will get a watercolour paint and use this to paint small patches of colours onto your apples and bowl. Use your colours on your scrap paper to create a paint palette, making new marks with different colours, and add more water. Once you have painted some marks on your apples let it dry before you apply another colour so you can see some layers. Have fun! #TheVineMagArtCourse

Chic for Summer SUMMER BLOUSES The must have item for your summer wardrobe

www.kingsroadfashions.co.uk

The resurgence of the blouse has made all of us here at Kings Road, very happy ladies. Whether you go for a classic tailored look, a floaty feminine style or a simple short sleeved linen top, you really can’t go wrong with this wardrobe staple. You can wear your blouse in so many different ways, whether dressed up with your favourite summer trousers or go casual and team your blouse with a pair of shorts or linen skirt. Whatever your style, you’ll find a huge choice this year, from bold botanical prints, soft ditsy florals, classic stripes and cool clear colours… it’s your choice so wear it your way! We also really love the contemporary shirt dress which has been in many collections this summer. It is a timeless style which suits most body shapes and is ideal for day into evening events

Looking Up!

See Jupiter and Saturn together this Summer: Look towards your south as darkness falls on any clear evening and you’ll find a bright star-like object low towards the horizon. This is Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system. Now cast your eyes across the sky to the left of Jupiter for the next brightest star-like object you can see. This is Saturn. It is not as bright as Jupiter as it is almost half the size and double the distance away.

August & September 2019

Watch the Perseids Meteor Shower from the Chilterns: For the first two weeks in August this year Earth is set to venture into a dense region of comet debris left behind by an ancient icy visitor to the inner solar system. Expect thousands of tiny particles of comet debris to burn up in our atmosphere above Bedfordshire to produce an amazing display of shooting stars. Best nights to look are 10 – 14 August. Catch the Milky Way on a moonless night: The last week of August and the last week of September this year sees no moon in the evening sky, and so are the best times to catch the summer Milky Way from the Chiltern Hills. Head to a spot with open views of the sky away from town lights and let your eyes adjust to the dark. High overhead you’ll see a pale grey speckled band, which is the aggregated starlight from some of the 300 billion stars that make up our home galaxy. The effects can be life changing, but we are here to help you move forward with your life. Headway Luton is affiliated to Headway UK Registered Charity number:1080775 Registered Company number: 3917437
