Bright Spot To Lighten Winter Gloom Let’s face it. The British winter can be cold, wet and miserable. And Christmas always hits us hard in the pocket. But there’s one place guaranteed to lift the gloom... Original pool after draining Central Bedfordshire Council’s spanking new library in the

Dunstable Centre.

It’s open from 6am until 9pm, is bright, light and airy and almost everything is at everyone’s favourite price – FREE. The space flows seamlessly from the main foyer and is zoned for different activities including space to relax, read or study, a children’s zone and new facilities for teenagers. The library also offers access to computers and iPads, with free Wi-Fi. And as with all our libraries, it’s more than just books, magazines and newspapers – your library card is your passport to a whole world of digital entertainment our staff call ‘library in your pocket’.

It not only offers a huge range of e-books and audible books on your PC, smartphone, tablet or e-reader but access to nearly 100 popular magazines and a year’s worth of back issues. Music fans aren’t left out

either with our free digital music resource – Freegal. A huge range of musical genres is available from classical music to the more niche. Anyone for K-pop

or old skool jungle, anyone? And, of course, it’s available 24/7, 365 days a year. Looking for something to do? There are loads of activities

and clubs, such as knitting and craft groups, board game clubs, colouring clubs for adults and coffee mornings as well as the popular parent and pre-schooler Rhyme Time sessions.

Or maybe you would rather be entertained – look out for information about author talks, local interest talks and local history events. Sign up to our library news e-bulletins and receive details about local events direct to your inbox! Or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. Simply search ‘Central Bedfordshire libraries’.

Our team plans a range of

activities over the festive

period.

Already confirmed are two ‘Fairy Christmas’ events for children and parents/carers on Friday 6th December and Friday 13th December between 10am and 10.45am with Xmas songs and stories. And they’ll be dishing out free mince pies in the same timeslot on Monday 9th December for a

‘Sing-along-a-Christmas’

which is open to all.

As well as the library, the centre boasts a 100-station gym complete with creche, a café, multi-use sports hall, spaces to hire and offices for Citizen’s Advice – all part of its mission to be the town’s community hub. y/32YMP75 Visit http://bit.l

Great news from Promoting Dunstable. Not only did we get our eighth Gold medal this summer but were voted by Anglia in Bloom the Best Large Town in East Anglia. The judges have now entered us in Britain in Bloom next year! This is a recognition of all the voluntary hard work over the last 10 years that goes into making our Town a great place to live and work. Dunstable Town Council always impresses with beautiful flower displays too and the hard working ground staff and Town Rangers keep the parks and cemetery looking good. All groups under the Promoting Dunstable umbrella have had a busy and rewarding year. Hugh Garrod, Chairman, sends his thanks to all the volunteers who have worked hard and contributed in so many ways to the continuing improvement in the Town and the many community projects that have been undertaken to create interest and improve different areas.

Incredible Edible

community garden at Katherine Drive since 2013, continues with its ‘come & grow’ monthly sessions teaching people how to care for this amazing edible garden. Their latest project was the creation of a new wheelchair accessible garden. With help from Rock & Redeemer Vineyard Church, Co-op, SkillsMax, Chiltern Vehicle Preservation Group and the Big Lottery Community Fund they raised £5924 enabling them to build a bespoke garden made 8

of recycled durable plastic wood. On June 1st they hosted their fifth Big Lunch, also invited lots of dogs to Man’s best friend day. A memorial was created for Remembrance Sunday and on Sunday 15th December everyone is invited to their Christmas party between 1 and 3pm. Details on the flyer (see out & about for details).

Keep Dunstable Tidy has organised several Litter Picks in and around the town. But more help is always needed. If any local organisations would like to be involved please contact h.garrod@ntlworld.com. It is very sad that the streets and parks are spoilt by a few selfish people leaving their rubbish and cigarette butts etc. for others to tidy up. Dunstable in Bloom ended the

year with the annual Award ceremony held in September at the Vale Academy. It was attended by many of the participants who entered Best Allotment, Hanging Baskets, Tubs, Front Gardens and Wheelie Fantastic competitions. Members of the public, schools, care homes and youth groups – even the Fire Station - all took part enthusiastically and interpreted the theme of the

‘Five Senses’ in many imaginative ways. Volunteers are still working at the end of the year planting daffodils in several dull areas to cheerfully brighten up the early Spring. 600 bulbs have been planted in an hour by Downside residents, Beavers & Cubs! All rewarded with refreshments! Weatherfield pupils enjoyed their morning at Olma Road planting bulbs, making their own plant pots and bug bookmarks. 500 to be planted by the Sea Scouts. Wonderful for all these young people to be involved.

Medieval Dunstable – Progress on the hoped for new Queen Eleanor statue for the Town will be given in the New Year. Jean Yates says in the meantime we are exploring funding opportunities for this wonderful project. With Best wishes for a very Happy Christmas to all those who Promote Dunstable and let’s get together to make 2020 a ‘Blooming Good New Year’ for the Town!

The British

Red Cross Needs You! When many people think of the British Red Cross, their thoughts turn to Emergency Response work overseas or First Aid. The emblem is recognised all over the world and it symbolises impartial help and assistance to those in need. However not everyone will be aware that there is a huge range of services helping people in crisis, right here in the UK; from supporting people after a stay in hospital, preparing and responding to emergencies, to reuniting families across the globe. In Bedfordshire services include Crisis Response, Independent Living and Mobility Aids. Like any charity, the British Red Cross is dependent on the amazing efforts

‘Battle weary family celebrate as rett uk help them secure a specialised college placement for their 19 year old, daughter worth £265,000 per year,’

www.mabplastering.co.uk

PLASTERER 40 Years experience

These are just a few of the possible headlines celebrating real outcomes following interventions by leading Rett Syndrome support charity, Rett UK. What is Rett Syndrome? Imagine being told the child you thought was ‘normal’, albeit a bit slow to progress in some areas, had a rare, devastating, neurological disorder that would leave them needing lifelong 24/7 care. Imagine watching helplessly as it robbed them of their ability to walk, talk and feed themselves. Feel their pain as their body is wracked by seizures, muscle spasms and even breathing becomes a struggle. This is rett syndrome and this is the reality for the families we support. Rett uk is the only national charity providing professional family support services in the uk and has over 30 years experience of doing so. But what does that support look like? Do people really understand what impact our work has? Research on the other hand is an easy concept to grasp. Research today is all about gene therapy, gene editing and potential cures. These are undoubtedly exciting times for many rare disorders including rett syndrome. Our families, understandably, need to look forward to a life more normal and maybe, one day,

we will have a safe effective treatment for the disorder. Maybe even a cure. Everyone can relate to the clarity and urgency of that message. But what of support? We empower families with information and advice about rett syndrome, about services and therapies they should be accessing and what financial benefits they are entitled to. We build their emotional resilience as they battle with the challenges that living with rett throws at them on a daily basis. And battle it is – rett uk is at the frontline for our families – fighting social services, education and health services so they get what they are entitled to, so they get a chance to have a life worth living. In the last few years, the demand for our services has increased hugely as the savage cuts to statutory services has left families at breaking point. Rett uk supports over 1000 families; every quarter, we take over 700 calls to our telephone helpline. Help us make a difference today and every day. Thank you

Give An Assistance Dog A Travellers Tales The Best Start In Life

January will see the start of a new adult learning course in Dunstable for which Town Guide (and regular contributor to The Vine), Paul Heley, will be presenting five talks on some of the countries he has visited during his varied and extensive travels. Aspects of my Travels - A Travelogue by Paul Heley The five talks are a mixture between history and travelogue. Paul has visited each area and as well as describing something of the history, the talk contains many "touristy" pictures. The Old

“Puffing Billy” Railway Line The old railway line between Leighton Buzzard and Hatfield played quite a large part both in my boyhood and later in my early twenties. I can’t say I was familiar with the complete stretch but the sections between Dunstable Town station and Luton Bute Street, and between Dunstable North station and Stanbridge Ford station both have various memories.

known locally as “Puffing Billy”. It made heavy weather climbing the gradient from Stanbridge Ford to Dunstable North. I was told that this gradient was the third steepest in England. Is that true? Does anyone know? The other railway station, Dunstable Town, was a collecting point for scrap metal during WW2 and was taken away to be used for the war effort. After we had moved from Totternhoe and until I got married, I lived in St Peters Rd, This railway line also featured in my father’s life and work Dunstable, and this station was at the bottom of our road. because he was born and bred in Totternhoe and worked So far as we kids in the area were concerned, the station at the Lime and Stone Company in Lower End. Before and its mountain of scrap metal - plus a huge crane - was becoming Manager of the company, he’d had a variety of a real magnet and we wanted to get into the station yard jobs one of which was that of engine driver. This meant so as to examine the scrap metal to see if any of it would transporting truckloads of the finished lime (or whatever) enhance our shrapnel collections (every boy had one). The from the Lime Works along a small company line to Stan- scrap dump was part of Freddie Carter’s scrap metal busibridge Ford station where it would be collected and taken ness which used to be along the Luton Rd on the corner to wherever it was required. of Boscombe Rd. My family all came from Totternhoe - I lived the first years But the station master didn’t see it like we did and he and of my life there - and I used to spend a lot of my school we kids were constantly at war. But in spite of “Keep Out” holidays with my grandmother, aunts and uncles, cousin and “Trespassers will be Prosecuted” signs, we managed to and a host of friends who all lived at Lower End. Stangain access at weekends and climb all over this precarious bridge Ford station was just down the road from this end and dangerous scrap heap - and even climb up the crane of the village and we spent quite a lot of time mucking until one day when the police were called in to read the riot about the station (the station master was very tolerant!) and act. I remember that my mother was terrified I would be in the Litney Wood (since uprooted and demolished) and branded as a criminal! At the time, my father was away in the Litney brook which ran nearby. the Army and I almost ran wild. I remember an old locomotive which used to to ply up Also as boys, we used to put a halfpenny on the railway and down from Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable North line and wait for a passing train to flatten it out and make it station. It was one of those really old fashioned locos with into a penny. We also tried to make a sixpenny piece into a a cylindrical boiler, a high stack and a tall steam dome fixed shilling but since neither of these mildly illegal entrepreto the boiler. It was very antiquated in appearance and was neurial exploits ever worked, we gave up that idea.

rport Former Luton ai There used to be a fairly large expanse of spare land which was part of the station and which we boys used as a football or cricket pitch. But there was also an old windowless hut on this ground which railway workers used when they were skiving off their proper work. And they didn’t welcome our presence either and frequently shooed us away. We thought we’d get our own back on one occasion and cut a sod of turf and gingerly placed it over the top of the chimney. And waited. Soon these men emerged from the hut coughing and spluttering, saw us and put two and two together. But by then we’d scarpered. On a sadder note, I recall a boy at school who, following something very serious, had been expelled. Rather than tell his parents, he put his head on the line as a train was passing and ended it all. Somehow I survived boyhood and after leaving school, I went into the Merchant Navy. And, again, Dunstable Town station became a small part of my life. Voyages would start and finish at Tilbury, Birkenhead, Glasgow or Liverpool and I would send my luggage by train (these were the days when suitcases didn’t have wheels!) and I would either take my case to, or pick it up from the station at the bottom of the road. It was very convenient and saved me a lot of humping about. But after I came out of the Merchant Navy and after I’d done my two years National Service in the RAF, I had to look for a “civvy” job. Thanks to the RAF, I’d learnt something about electronics so got a job with English Electric up at Luton Airport. The airport then was a grass covered field and the control tower was a glorified wooden shed how times have changed! I was required to “clock in” by 8.30 so left home in St Peters Rd just before 8.00, ran down the road to the station and caught the 8 o’clock train which took me to Bute Street station in Luton in less than 10 minutes. I then ran to Park Square and caught a ‘bus outside the Technical College (now the University of Befordshire) and clocked in

The Departure Lo unge with about two minutes to spare. It worked a treat. This was a daily event for some time and continued until I began to pick up my girl friend on a motorbike en route to work. She, of course, also worked at English Electric (and has been my wife for the last 60 years – Diamond wedding celebrated recently). After this period, I used the railway to Luton infrequently but I must admit that I was very sad to witness its closure after “Vandal Beeching” had completed his work. Without my realising it, this little branch line had, in one way or another, quite an impact on my earlier life.

A little known tidbit of naval history This story is supposed to have come from the ship’s log of the USS “Constitution” as she set sail on July 27, 1798. But it is strongly disputed by many, however, so must be read with a large pinch of salt:The ship had a complement of 475 officers and men and before leaving, loaded up with 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7400 cannon shot, 11600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum. At Jamaica, 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum were added before arriving at the Azores where 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine were also loaded. They then sailed for England and scuttled 12 English merchant ships but only salvaged the rum on board. By January 1799, their powder and shot had been exhausted so they sailed to the firth of Clyde and raided a whisky distillery. The result was that 40,000 gallons of malt whisky were loaded. After this they headed home arriving at Boston on 20th February 1799 with no cannon shot, no powder, no food, no rum, no wine, no whisky. But they still had 38,600 gallons of water! See website for our latest offers... www.thewhitehorseeatonbray.co.uk Create a portrait using torn paper from newspapers/magazines. For my collage I used a newspaper. Find yourself a portrait template already drawn out for you. This should just be a simple line drawing of a face with no shade or tone. Print your face onto card (not thin paper) it takes the collage better. Then you need to get yourself a newspaper and some PVA glue. Look through your newspaper/magazine and separate out your colours and tones. Try and create a variety of tones from dark/light either black/white or various colours with different shades. Look for about 5 different shades and put them in piles. Make sure you tear your tones from the newspaper and vary the sizes. Don’t cut out with scissors as you will get hard edge and glue down. #TheVineMagArtCourse

Looking Up!

December 2019 and January 2020

Venus Shines Bright as the Winter Evening Star: From late December onwards look low to the southwest on any clear early evening and you’ll catch a dazzling ‘star’ in the darkening sky after sunset. This is Venus, the brightest planet in our night sky, and often known as Earth’s twin. Venus though is nothing like Earth. It is completely shrouded in a dense choking atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Surface temperatures reach 450 degrees Celsius, and the atmospheric pressure is 93 times greater than on Earth. Not somewhere I’d recommend for your next holiday! Look for Shooting Stars this Festive Season: Two meteor showers reach a peak in their activity this Christmas; the Ursids on the night of 21st - 22nd December and the Quadrantids on 3rd - 4th January. If you’ve got a clear night on one or both dates head outside and simply look up to see if you can catch any shooting stars. See the Highest Full Moon of the Year: As Friday 10th January ticks over into Saturday 11th January the moon crosses our meridian of longitude directly south. This is when the moon reaches its highest point in the sky for the night - and also for the year. If you’re outside at this time of night on this date the shadows cast in moonlight you’ll find reminiscent of those cast by the sun on a midsummer lunchtime, just a little more eerie! Food & Drink

Wine & Dine I was always a bit hazy about which wine to serve with which food. They didn’t teach that sort of thing at our local comprehensive. Then one day a chef friend explained that far from being an elitist concept it was simply about marrying flavours that blend well or complement each other, much like cooking. I managed to get her to distil her wisdom into this handy guide.

Fish – A delicate fish dish calls

for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. If the fish is more robust and served with a rich sauce, it will require a more full-bodied flavoursome white like Chardonnay. Salty seafood marries surprisingly well with champagne. Chicken or Turkey - Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato.

Juicy red meat – For beef

or steak a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon will work well or even a Rioja.

Spicy dishes – These

require a spicy wine. Look for a Malbec, Syrah or Shiraz will all hold their own. If the spicy food is vegetarian, then a dry Riesling will pair well.

36 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Vegetarian food - There

is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be served with white wine. But medium reds, like Merlot work well with lots of vegetarian dishes, particularly tomato-based recipes.

Cheese board - Some

cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder.

Remember, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. So, a buttery sauce will work well with white a wine also described as ‘buttery’. Experiment and enjoy!

There aren’t many fishing tackle shops about anymore due to the online market making it easier for people to both buy and sell equipment, but there are still some shops left, both locally in the area and nationally. Once you catch your first fish, weather it be a carp, bream or roach, you’ll become hooked and will want to try and catch another, it’s great when you have friends who go too as it becomes competitive.

Reduce Your Plastic Footprint Stop straws - If a straw is a must, in-

stead of a plastic one purchase a reusable stainless-steel straw and carry it with you.

Invest in reusable produce bags - A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years

to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag but be sure to wash them often.

Give up the gum – Chewing gum is made of a synthetic rubber which is actually plastic! Buy boxes over bottles - If your

laundry detergent comes in a box it will be more easily recycled than a plastic bottle.

Buy from bulk bins - If possible,

purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins using your own container or bag. Not only will you save on packaging you'll also save money.

Take your own cup to coffee shops - Some establishments offer a reduction in price for this!

40 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Ditch the disposables - Disposable

nappies are a huge source of landfill. Modern cloth nappies are nothing like the monstrosities of yesteryear. Check them out, reduce your baby's carbon footprint and save money in the process.

Squeeze your own - Make your own

fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles. It's healthier and better for the environment.

Lead with your lunch - Pack your own lunch in reusable containers and bags.

Use a real razor - with replaceable

blades instead of a plastic disposable razor. These are all simple steps but if more of us follow them they have the potential to make a big impact on our collective plastic footprint.
