You’ve probably seen the Woodside Link being transformed from a work site into a major piece of transport infrastructure. Now you can take a closer look by going along to the Woodside Link Cycling Celebration on Saturday, December 10.

Cycling Fun Marking the end of construction, the event takes place between 10am and 2pm, with free entry from the footway that runs between Frogmore Road and Wheatfield Surgery.

There will be cycling time trials for youngsters aged 16 and under in four categories, between 10am and noon.

Entrants can turn up with their bike at anytime during the two-hour slot to compete. In the afternoon there will be an opportunity for people of all ages to leisurely cycle up and down the new road on their bike.

Family Entertainment Plenty is planned for those not wishing to take to two wheels. Local band The Situators are rehearsing a set list full of international hits, including songs made famous by Megan Trainor, Chuck Berry and Otis Reading. They are performing at 11am and 12.30pm. Exciting displays from the Extreme Mountain Bike Show at 10.30am, 12 noon and 1.15pm are also planned.

That’s not all as Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue are attending with a fire engine, Travel Choices’ Dr Bike and the Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum will be on hand to give some bike maintenance and cycling advice, and there will be a local food van The Situators selling a full range of refreshments, including Courtesy FJS Photography hot dogs, sandwiches and jacket potatoes.

Sculpture Captures Future Travel Choices

Local school pupils are leading the way in developing environmentally friendly ways to get around.

Their thoughts have been captured in a new sculpture, commissioned by Travel Choices, a Central Bedfordshire Council-funded project promoting sustainable travel options, such as cycling, walking, public transport.

In March 2015, Travel Choices challenged pupils to design a green form of transport for future generations. Workshops were held in libraries and at the Travel Choices Hub in Dunstable.

There was also an art competition run in schools wishing to take part.

Three hundred entries flooded in from children aged five to 11 from eight local schools: Brewers Hill Middle School, Dunstable Icknield Lower, Hadrian Academy, Houghton Regis Primary School, Lark Rise Academy, Priory Academy, The Vale Academy and Watling Lower School.

Prizes went to the best entries but they were all so good, Travel Choices decided to make something permanent to celebrate the children’s imagination and to encourage using sustainable travel.

The theme of the original competition was Around

the World in 80 Ways so the team put all the designs for greener transport on to a sculpture that looks like a big hot air balloon.

It is located in Grove House Gardens in a central location, where all schools taking part can go and look at their designs. It links up with the National Cycle Network 6 and is very near to the Busway, so is ideally located for all travel needs.

Fun ideas captured on the sculpture include a sledge on wheels, a flying car and a steamboard.

Andy Archer of 3D eye Ltd kindly offered to bring the design to life.

It was officially unveiled by the Mayor and Mayoress of Dunstable on Friday 7 October, at a ceremony attended by pupils of local schools. Hadrian Academy Choir sang a medley of travel-themed songs.

1/2 cup glitter - to help guide the reindeers to your home.

A zip lock bag - for mixing Small bags - for the reindeer dust.

Ribbons or string - to tie the small bags Pour the oats into a zip lock bag and then add the glitter. (and any other magical ingriedients you choose) Zip up the bag and shake then empty the reindeer dust into the small bags for each child.

Tie off each bag with a colourful ribbon and add a Reindeer Dust Poem label. You can make up your own or cut out the one above.

On Christmas Eve, just before bedtime give each child their own bag of reindeer dust so they can run around and sprinkle it over the garden whilst reciting the Reindeer Dust Poem.

I’m an international video artist, academic and educator and I am running a 14 weeks creative arts course in drawing & painting. I have lived in Dunstable for a couple of years now and I felt the urge to inspire some creative inspiration in this amazing part of Bedfordshire.

My course started in September 2016 for 14 weeks. I was only planning on doing one morning a week for 3 hours but that soon developed into two mornings and now I am planning on three sessions a week starting in January 2017. I have 30 students that are amazing themselves every week with exciting new art projects and experimenting with a variety of media. I witness creative explosions each week. Making anything gives the creator a sense of value and achievement and this course is definitely making my students feel happy. Now that is priceless. My ethos is to collapse the space between thinking and doing to create artwork that is expressive and creative. “…anyone can be taught how to draw and paint but being creative is a totally different way of seeing & perceiving the world we live in.” Dr Lorna Moore 2016 Now that is what this course is about. I am looking to teach students how to be creative and to see and perceive the world in totally new and exciting ways.

Dr Moore’s art course aims to inspire creative confidence through the visual. Her ethos is all about the art process and not the product. Her teaching methods are absolutely extraordinary and she gets the best out of her students in a number of incredible ways. Lorna has been teaching for over 20 years and she has exhibited all over Europe, Canada, Russia and more. She has written book chapters and organised endless art exhibitions and events.

Students are having an art exhibition of their work entitled: “Dying to be Creative” which will open on Friday the 16th December at Whipsnade Village Hall from 7pm - 9pm, refreshments provided. Anyone is welcome so come along and have a look. The show runs from Saturday the 17th - Sunday the 18th December 11am -3pm.

Home Made Christmas Get creative in the kitchen this Christmas

Easy Mulled Wine Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind 1 large piece lemon rind 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar

Don't bother with expensive wine, a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference!

Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don’t bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!).

Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine.

Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside.

Layer the dry ingredients in a one litre jar, following the order above, from top, starting with the salt, baking powder and flour. Press each layer down before adding the next (wipe the inside of the jar after adding the cocoa). The amounts given should exactly fill a one litre jar.

Add ribbon to decorate and remember to include a tag with the instructions.

Line two baking sheets with nonstick baking paper. Sift the plain flour, mix in the bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger. Rub in butter with your fingers until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Then add the brown sugar, golden syrup and beaten egg. Mix with your hand to form a ball. Allow to rest for five minutes while you lightly crush the boiled sweets with the rolling pin.

Flour your work surface and the rolling pin, and roll out the dough to the thickness of a pound coin. Using cutters such as Christmas trees, hearts and angels, cut out your biscuits. With a smaller cutter or just with a knife, cut a small round hole in the centre

of the biscuit. Place on the lined baking sheet. Put a crushed boiled sweet in each little hole. If you want to hang the biscuits on the Christmas tree, use a straw to make a little hole near the top.

Bake for 10-12 mins until golden. Leave to cool and harden on the baking sheets because they will be soft to begin with, and the melted sweets very hot.

When cold and solid, thread ribbon through the little holes and tie.

200ml double cream 200g good-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids) 200g desiccated coconut

Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring just up to the boil. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour over the boiling cream, then stir until the chocolate and cream are well blended and smooth. Cool, then set aside in the fridge until the mixture is solid, about 2 hrs.

Scoop out teaspoons of the mixture and roll into small walnut-size balls with your hands. Sprinkle the coconut onto a plate and roll the truffle in the coconut until evenly covered. Will keep in a cool place for 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

Social Care Why Is It Under Funded?

he majority of the following item was gleaned from the National Pensioners Convention paper 'The Message'.

There have been numerous independent reviews, commissions, White Papers and Acts of Parliament over the last twenty years yet the social care system across the country remains in crisis and increasing financial pressure. At the heart of the problem facing the social care sector are the severe cuts to funding over the last six years, of a service that was already widely seen as the Cinderella of the care system.

Successive governments have been reluctant to even talk to the public on the subject - let alone ask them how they think it could be run. A former Conservative Health Minister has called for a new health and care tax to be introduced perhaps raising national insurance payments as the most effective way of putting badly needed funds into the care system.

There can be no doubt that something has to be done given that those facing the prospect of needing to go into a care home now face average fee's of £30,000 per year. The sum of £23,000 - £25,000 is the limit of saving available to those making a claim for social security funds before they can get any support from their authority, and many will end up having

Growing demands, accompanied by a tighter rationing of services and a reduction in the number of people receiving support, the decline of support and preventative services in the community and accumulated effect of continuing failure by successive governments to adequately address these problems have allowed the service in some parts of the country to effectively collapse.

Recent proposals allowing local authorities to raise an additional 2% towards social care only raised £380 million yet since 2010 budgets have been reduced by £4.6 billion and more cuts are expected.

According to Longevity Centre - UK, the result of these cuts now mean that approximately 1.86 million people over the age of 50 in England (1 in 10) have un-met care needs and are forced to rely on friends and family or go without any support at all.

The National Pensioners Convention general secretary, Dot Gibson, said " Tax funded health and social care is the only way to ensure everyone gets the support they need free at the point of delivery",.

I certainly would agree with her whole heartedly but I would add that such a tax must be ring fenced to stop the government from plundering such fund for their own devices.

When searching for the right office space to suit your business, it is important to define your key requirements as well as having a full understanding of the costs attached.

1 Office Size

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Spot the Space Station (or Santa) over Bedfordshire:

The International Space Station (ISS) returns to our evening sky in the run up to Christmas this year. Look for a bright white light moving steadily across the sky on a roughly west to east or south-east trajectory. The space station does not flash or make a noise, but silently sails 250 miles above us at 17500mph. Best times to spot the ISS are from 6 December until 20 December. It’ll be visible for about 8 minutes each evening between 4:30pm and 6pm. Exact timings can be found online.

A Travellers Tale The Incas and Machu Pichu Part III

By Paul Heley This will be the last of my “A Traveller’s Tale” after more than 50 individual articles. So first I should like to thank those people who have been kind enough to say (either to me directly or via Val or Scott) that they have enjoyed my ramblings. And secondly a big thank you to Shelley and Scott at “The Vine” for having tolerated (and actively encouraged) me for many years over both my “Town at the Crossroads” articles as well as “A Traveller’s Tale” series.

However, for the many who will give thanks for the end of all this rubbish and hopeful of a reprieve, I have to tell you that I shall be starting a new series of articles called simply “Snippets”. Here I shall rabbit on about nothing in particular : a bit of local history, a remembered trip somewhere, a reminiscence from school days or the Merchant Navy or the RAF. In fact it could be anything so you have been warned! It’s a case of au revoir (but not adieu).

After our tour round different examples of Inca building, the next area of interest was the Sacred Valley of the Incas; so called because of its fertile soil and benign climate. One of the visits was to a local centre specialising in spinning, dyeing and weaving original alpaca wool into a variety of different cloths and fabrics. All the ingredients used in the washing and dyeing come from plants or roots and it was interesting to witness the transformation of a grubby, oily lump of alpaca wool into something pure white and soft. It’s then spun by hand using one of those old fashioned rotating and weighted spindles before being dyed. Dyes come from a variety of plants which can be mixed in order to give different shades if required.

The patterns are intricate and highly distinctive and represent separate local communities - a similar idea to, but not the same as Scottish clan tartans.

There was also a trip to Moray where an amazing spectacle awaited : an enormous, and very deep, circular excavation arranged in tiers like the seats of a Roman amphitheatre. But these tiers were terraces, not seats, and had been used for growing cereals and other produce. It’s claimed that a number of different micro-climates are experienced on these terraces thus allowing one crop to be favoured over another. It’s an incredible sight where an original and natural depression in the land surface had been richly exploited and developed into this wonderful agricultural amphitheatre.

Different routes to the hotel often took us through some of the poorer parts of Cusco. Whereas the centre of the city is very smart and has a number of impressive buildings, the poorer areas can be very squalid indeed. In many ways they are reminiscent of India (but without the cows and cow pats) with piles of rubbish scattered everywhere and scores of feral dogs trying to find something to eat. These poorer areas are where people from the surrounding Andean villages have come looking for work and a better life.

Another stop was at Awancancha.

Here collections of different subspecies of llamas and alpacas are kept - some with extremely long, coiled coats making them look like cameline rap artists complete with dreadlocks! Also seen were vicunas and guanachos lurking on the hillside well away from humans (whom they don’t like). But the domesticated llamas and

alpacas were much more friendly - no doubt because we’d been given bunches of greenery with which to feed them!

One day, our lunch was taken at the large village of Pisac where there was - surprise, surprise! - a huge market where everyone was encouraged to spend, spend, spend. Three of us found a local bakery where we had a couple of rolls filled with something unknown and some tea. Then, too late, I saw the baker take some roasted guinea pigs out of the oven!

Guinea pig is another Peruvian delicacy and we’d often seen them being offered on skewered kebab sticks by the roadside as we sped past. But I really should have asked for one at the bakery even though I’d already had lunch because I doubt if there’s much meat on a guinea pig. Later, I was amused to see, in one of the churches we visited, a Peruvian painting of The Last Supper where the delicacy in the centre of the table was a guinea pig.

Some people thought it blasphemous; but I contend that it wasn’t when one considers the culture in which it had been painted.

After lunch, we were taken into the original, and still inhabited, Incan part of the village. This area consisted of tiny, cobbled streets with meticulously cut stonework walls on either side.

The streets were very long, very narrow and very claustrophobic. We also visited one of the early stone houses and, in addition to strange artefacts hanging from the walls, there were about 20 guinea pigs running around the floor. No doubt they were destined for someone’s lunch! But they’re very small and I can imagine that you’d need something like four for a decent meal. However, roast guinea pig and chips sounds very tasty!

Machu Pichu

Roast Guinea Pig The day ended with a visit to Ollantaytambo where there are pre-Incan temple ruins at the top of a very steep cliff on which are cut a number of terraces linked by uneven steps. I found them extremely difficult to climb and “surrendered” about three quarters of the way up. I didn’t want to spoil what little chance of success I might still have regarding Machu Pichu.

At our hotel that evening, we learned that one of our number had been kept in Cusco hospital with a bad attack of altitude sickness; and that another member was also very dodgy. I’m fortunate in that, apart from an increased “out of breathness”, I’ve never been affected by altitude sickness on any of my previous trips to high places.

It seems that it affects some people but not others; and that I’m one of the lucky ones.

On the final day of the tour - with fingers (and eyes, toes, knees and everything else) tightly crossed - I joined the coach to the train station where the “Orient Express” took us to the starting point for the ascent up Machu Pichu. The place was absolutely heaving: and if tourism accounts for the bulk of Peru’s GNP, then Machu Pichu must account for 50% of that!! A carefully routed walk through yet another market brought us to the ‘bus station when we were taken on a 20 minute ride up a very bumpy and twisty road through the “cloud forest” to the base of Machu Pichu itself. But from there onwards, I was on my own for the final climb up to the citadel itself.

The Yale archaeologist, Hiram Bingham, really started something in 1911 when he cut his way through the dense jungle to discover, and to make the first clearances, of this incredible “lost city”. Over the years, a great deal of research and restoration has

gone into this place and its history is now well documented. Started by the Inca ruler Pachacuti around 1450, it remained a sanctuary for his people for little more than a century. The Spanish arrived in 1532 and razed and pillaged any site which promised gold but Machu Pichu was fortunate because of its extreme remoteness and was never discovered so, therefore, not attacked. However, it was abandoned around 1570 in fear of the Conquistadors and also because various diseases brought by the Spanish had infiltrated into the entire area and had wiped out many of the local inhabitants.

To see Machu Pichu in all its glory had, for me, long been a dream - one which I fervently hoped might now be realised. So, with faltering steps, many stops to recover my breath, and with many helping hands to stop me from overbalancing on the uneven and unequally sized steps, I managed to get to the first level which offers a glimpse of the city itself. But this isn’t the level from where the classic photographs are taken so I continued upwards suitably encouraged. And so to the top where I could say “mission accomplished”.

After a short while spent taking photos, recovering my breath and admiring the view, we descended into the city itself and were shown various temples and other buildings of former importance. After a while - by now completely exhausted - a few of us decided enough was enough and went back down again and caught the bus back to the train station. Here I was very happy to just sit for a couple of hours listening to some chap entertaining us with Andean music played on a variety of pipes and flutes.

Eventually, everybody returned and we made our way back to the hotel.

That evening I was shattered, aching all over, but absolutely elated; and after a bowl of soup and a pot of tea followed by a shower, I pumped all sorts of (supposed) muscle easing creams into aching joints and went to bed feeling very pleased with myself.

Next day was the beginning of the long journey home starting with a flight back to Lima. Then the 16 hour killer flights from Lima to Sao Paulo to Heathrow. But the two altitude sickness sufferers were not allowed to fly with us and had to remain in Lima - their bout of altitude sickness must have been serious.

Finally, finally, the taxi service provided from Heathrow to home was very welcome after which I reflected on the trip itself. It had been most enjoyable, extremely exhausting, and very unusual - one which was full of strange sights and experiences and one where I’d picked up a fund of new knowledge.

Many of my fellow travellers had taken pity on the many, seemingly poor, souvenir sellers and had bought stacks of stuff which, I’m sure, they will never use back home (eg a two foot high Inca warrior!!) But before leaving, Val had insisted that we’ve got enough junk from around the world so “don’t bring any more home” (but, even so, I still managed to squeeze one or two little bits into my suitcase!)

So overall it was a good trip but my lasting realisation is that I should have done it 20 years earlier!

Soap villain of the decade Brian Capron, who played the evil Richard Hillman in Coronation Street, will take on another wicked act as Abanazar in this year’s panto. As well as regular appearances on TV, Brian is also established in various theatre roles. In pantomime Brian has enlivened the devilish characters as a seasoned baddie and has the perfect qualities to bring to life the true baddie, Abanazar in Aladdin.

From villain to funny man, CBBC presenter Ed Petrie will be Wishee Washee in this year’s Aladdin. A firm favourite with family audiences, Ed has spent ten years on television establishing himself as a comedic actor. Initially starting on CBBC as a continuity presenter, Ed quickly landed his own shows with sidekicks Oucho T. Cactus and CBBC dogs Hacker and Dodge, before starting his hugely popular current shows, Marrying Mum And Dad and All Over

The Place for the channel. Ed is set to bring energy and fun to the role of Wishee Washee!

The magic of panto just keeps giving as the panto dame Widow Twankey and the Genie of the Lamp will be played by Kieran and Sarah of Britain’s Got Talent fame, respectively. In 2014, Kieran and Sarah’s remarkable performances of popular opera hits got them all the way to the semi-finals of the ITV programme. Now they spend most of the year performing in venues around the country and on cruise ships all over the world. On stage, they have appeared in numerous pantomimes including Robin Hood And The Babes In The Wood in Kent, and the Easter pantomime of Alice in Wonderland in Cairo, Egypt.

Bringing panto nearer to home, Aladdin will be played by local actor, singer-songwriter and guitarist Joe Ashman. Joe appeared at the Grove Theatre ten years ago, playing John in the theatre’s first pantomime, Peter Pan, alongside Brian Blessed. He has since seen success in musical theatre at London's Palladium in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound Of Music, in theatre including The Cryptogram at the Donmar Warehouse and 2,000 Feet Away at the Bush Theatre, as well as on screen as a guest lead in the 2013 New Year’s Eve episode of Casualty on BBC 1. Joe is thrilled to be back at the Grove Theatre this year, playing the title role in their 10th anniversary panto!

LIPREADING CLASS: DUNSTABLE Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem?

Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they use all the advances in modern technology, but even the best aids don’t cure hearing loss. It is still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost.

Research has shown that joining a lipreading class helps to avoid the

damaging social isolation that can accompany hearing loss. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes help your ears fill in the things you miss. They are small friendly classes, and as well as learning lipreading we cover, how hearing works and the things that can go wrong, equipment and organisations that can help, strategies to cope in various situations, and much more, oh, and we laugh a lot!

My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, and so I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. I teach in Beds. Bucks and Herts, and there is now a class in Dunstable on a Wednesday afternoon. Santa will begin his travels on Saturday 3rd December at the Houghton Regis Christmas Light switch on in Bedford Square. He will continue on his journey all over the area up until Christmas Eve.

College Lake Artists - Eight wonderful artists and makers, are holding a four-day Christmas Fair from Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th December, 10am-4pm at the beautiful College Lake Nature Reserve near Tring.

We’re delighted to welcome Kerry Newth and her beautiful silver and gold jewellery. Kerry’s collections are inspired by organic growth patterns in the natural world, using scale, form and contrasting precious metals to create aesthetically beautiful forms. Our eight artists and makers will be exhibiting their new work, all designed to be perfect for Christmas presents or treats for yourself.

Jenny’s ever-popular glass includes some beautiful Christmas decorations, both Shirley and Kerry have wonderful new textiles and jewellery, Linda and Niki’s paintings and prints will enhance any wall, and Louisa’s new photographs are inspired during a recent trip to California. Nigel’s beautiful ceramic tableware is perfect for Christmas, and Hazel’s gorgeous willow weaving makes perfect decorations.

Combine beautiful artwork with a lovely wintery walk around College Lake Nature Reserve, then treat yourself to tea and mince pies in the cafe and you’ll be able to go home from a wonderful outing laden with presents and your Christmas shopping complete!!

The Club members raise money during the year to put into their Benevolent Fund and once a year this money is distributed to charities local to Dunstable and the surrounding villages.

To this end an Antiques Fair is held three times a year at the Dunstable Leisure Centre where the majority of the income goes to the Benevolent Fund. The next Fair is on New Years Day, Sunday 1st January 2017 and is open to the public between 10am and 4pm. Admission is a modest £2 per person.
