As you may be aware, the leisure centre in Dunstable is being redeveloped in a £20.1 million project. We are committed to enabling better health and wellbeing for our residents. The redevelopment work on the centre signals Central Bedfordshire Council’s ambition for Dunstable and our approach to the town’s overall growth and regeneration.

The redeveloped centre will be a modern stateof-the-art facility to cater for current and future demand and greatly improve the swimming and health and fitness offer, as well as library facilities. It will include a new 100 station gym and refurbished swimming pools, a brand new and bigger Swimming Pool tiles and render beingcrèche, removedalong with a café and flexible library, a new community space for other public and community services, such as such as the Citizens Advice, adult day care and disabled sports. By bringing services together under one roof, the new facility will reduce running costs, while providing more flexible services to customers, such as longer opening hours for the library and citizen’s advice. Whilst the library at Vernon Place will remain open through the build process and it is ‘business as usual’ there, Dunstable Leisure Centre closed in June for a period of 18 months to start the redevelopment work. Wates Construction is carrying out the partial demolition of the leisure centre and reconstruction of the new leisure facilities, library, day care and citizens advice. The contractors will typically be working Monday to Friday, 08.00 until 18.00. They won’t be working on Saturdays unless

there are exceptional circumstances. The demolition works are progressing well and are on schedule. In July the contractors arrived on the site and installed security systems and perimeter hoarding, as well as undertaking surveys in the building. Externally they facilitated an archaeological excavation in the old car park at the front of the leisure centre. During August the contractors removed the existing pool tiling, and commenced the external demolition. In September the contractors moved into a new site office on the corner of Grove Court. The old Dunstable Leisure Centre site is now completely enclosed, with a hoarding on all sides and security measures installed to prevent access out of hours. We would like to thank our residents and leisure centre users for their co-operation and understanding throughout the redevelopment. The contractors operate under the Considerate Constructors Scheme. summer school next year. Starting in October, the National Youth Jazz Collective has some fantastic workshops coming up where young musicians have the opportunity to train and play with top tutors. The National Youth Jazz Collective’s ethos is for young musicians to learn and develop by playing and improvising in small bands. All of the tutors are professional composers and performing jazz musicians who will be able to provide hands-on help to assist the children and develop their skills. These will be incredibly fun workshops. We expect to have three ensembles at Leighton Buzzard (beginners, intermediate and advanced) and there will be workshops on both 29th October and 26th November 2017, and then four more dates next year to create a six day course priced at £180 for the whole course. I read with great interest the article in the last ‘The Vine’ Issue 78, entitled ‘Dunstable is on The Up’. It was written by Councillor Nigel Young, who is an Executive Member for Regeneration and Business for Central Bedfordshire Council. A ‘glowing future’ seems to be on the cards for our region, new housing, new jobs, and new leisure facilities make up the Central Bedfordshire ‘Local Plan’ on which the article is based. It is well known that our County is blessed with a growing number of wonderful Country Parks; many created from the old sand and gravel workings along the Ouse River plain. The aforesaid article got me thinking! ‘What more can be done to attract visitors to our County and Dunstable that has the potential to be of benefit to both the environment and local economy’? A visit to The Eden Project in Cornwall a few years ago, and a look at the website gave me the idea that I am about to disclose. I am not sure how much longer the quarry at Kensworth has got to operate, but from a look at the OS map, and a walk around the site perimeter, it cannot be too long. The physical limits appear to be determined by the geography, with the extent of the workings now reaching the 200 metre Contour Line. However, high quarries do not lend themselves to flooding! So, what are the known (and well used) options? Possibly one: as a huge landfill site; with all the attendant environmental and traffic aggravation? Or, something sensible, ecologically safe, and an economical and educational benefit to our communities? Scaling from the OS map, calculates that the total land area of the quarry is 1.28 square kilometres, and quite deep. A small part of the western side has been fenced from the working quarry, and is now the Kensworth Quarry Nature Reserve. If you’ve not visited it, it is well worth going there. Getting out the OS map of Cornwall, I looked at the site of The Eden Project. It was built in an old china clay quarry over six years from 1995 to 2001, and if you have not been there – go! It is fabulous what has been done there! My calculations give the Eden Project a total land area of 0.36 square kilometres, with the two enormous

biodomes oriented on an east to west axis, to make maximum use of sun and daylight. The surrounding grounds have been landscaped and a micro-climate to support subtropical plants, the car parks and amenities. Therefore, calculations indicate that the Kensworth Quarry is three and a half times bigger than The Eden Project site. So, why not redevelop Kensworth Quarry into a similar ‘Eden Project’? Recent news published on The Eden Project website states that there are now plans to go international, with three projects planned in China, one in Australia, one in New Zealand, and one in Northern Ireland. But, no more planned in Great Britain! Just think what could be achieved!

There are many advantages to creating an ‘Eden Project’ style visitor attraction in the quarry, these being: • It would be close to the Chilterns Gateway Centre, Whipsnade Zoo and the Gliding Club, and therefore become a major attraction that would feed the existing attractions and local amenities. • Redevelopment would be ecologically beneficial, and would not require the road traffic movements required if it was to become a landfill site. Sealing of the quarry floor to prevent leakage of harmful liquids into the surrounding water-table would not be necessary. • Various habitats could be created for both native and foreign plants and animals due to the nature of the quarry and micro-climate there. • Caves could be excavated into the chalk faces to attract colonies of bats. The surrounding farmland would benefit from a reduction in the use of pesticides, as the bats feed on insects. A significant beneficial factor as found elsewhere throughout the world. • The creation of significant job opportunities # throughout the local area. • Potential to bring investment into Dunstable by stimulating lasting economic, social and environmental opportunities, in line with the ‘Local Plan’.

• It could become an annex to Whipsnade Zoo. The ZSL then could provide and look after the birds, butterflies and animals to inhabit and sustain the biodomes.

There are obviously many more potential advantages that can be identified, but most importantly to me has to be the huge educational resource it would create for the benefit of future generations, just like the Eden Project and the very similar Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, have both achieved with great success. I have recently retired after working for 49 years in the railway industry, so I am not looking for further paid work, nor do I have any financial interest in the future international plans. I only wish to give my carefully considered thoughts an airing for you to read, and perhaps agree with the principals, and give more thought and action to bring the proposal to fruition. Our community worked well together again in 2017 and we a very much looking forward to next year’s campaign’. Dunstable Town Council’s Town Clerk and Chief Executive, David Ashlee, also commented that ‘this year’s success shows what a fantastic partnership has been developed in Dunstable over the past few years for the ‘In Bloom’ campaign. These awards not only demonstrate that Dunstable is increasingly becoming an attractive place to live and work, they also evidence the wonderful community spirit that exists in the town’.

Autism Charity To Open First Charty Shop In Dunstable! Local charity Autism Bedfordshire is opening its first shop, on Lowther Road in Dunstable this October. The organisation provides a range of social opportunities and skills groups where people with autism can ‘be themselves’ and access activities that are designed and run by specialist trained teams. They are the only specialised independent charity in Bedfordshire to provide these services, over 1,000 members look to them for quality support every year and in July they achieved their second Ofsted Outstanding grading for their summer holiday schemes. The charity needs 20 volunteers to help run the shop - there is no age or ability limit, just a few hours a week to help sort and prepare stock for sale, maintain the shop floor and assist with sales. Training and general guidance will be given. Good quality donations are key, explained Ali Draper, Funding Officer, it will significantly reduce our start up costs, of which we are already dipping into reserves – but also in the on going sales, for example anything from a shop till to new good with tags/designer wear will enable us to open and keep our customers coming back for more! Donations can be dropped off at the shop from 1st October. We will have a pop up shop in Dunstable for the Charity Market event on 9th September so for more information about what we do, take a look at some of our merchandise or just to say hi please come and see us in the market square. The Best And Worst Day Ever 1st September 2017, 6.45am, Dover, Kent: Eaton Bray resident, Rose Hawkins, 24, disembarked from the Viking Princess pilot vessel and headed for Samphire Hoe Beach by dingy. She was about to begin the challenge of her life - swimming the English Channel. With the sun rising in the sky, the Viking Princess sounded its horn to indicate Roses swim had begun. Her parents Marian and Jim Hawkins, sister Sarah and Cousin Lizzie were on board to supply drinks, food and support. The tides were working in Roses favour and the conditions were near perfect up to hour eight. Also on the boat was an official channel swimming association observer, and two pilots, brothers Reg and Ray Brickell. The observer had to record Roses stroke rate every hour and test her with simple questions to ensure hypothermia or disorientation had not set in. Whilst treading water Rose had hourly drink and snack breaks, refuelling

with water, Ribena and peaches. Friends and family were kept up to date on Roses progress via her Channel swim Facebook page where they could leave messages which were written on a white board and shown to Rose as she swam! They could also track her on the channel swimming association website which highlighted her exact crossing. The weather changed from hour 8, the winds picked up and the swell was greater. When she got to hour 12, the pilot informed the team that although Rose was going at a good pace, she needed to speed up to enable her to reach the closest land Cap Gris Nez. A flood tide was pushing her around the coast and if Rose missed it she could be swimming for a further three hours to reach land which was something Rose had researched and wanted to avoid. With encouragement from her team, she upped her pace to beat the flood tide. She was swimming against it for nearly two hours. After 14.5 hours continuous swimming Roses knees hit the rocks at Cap Gris Nez, in her words she flopped onto a rock and hoped it was France. The observer told her to climb clear of the water and then he

radioed the boat to say she had been successful, so to the sound of the boat horn all on board cheered noisily. When Rose returned to the boat she was extremely cold and very hungry but ecstatic that she achieved her dream to swim the English Channel and said “I would not have given up, even if I had missed the Cap Gris Nez.” The next day Rose and her family visited the White Horse in Dover, where she signed her name on the wall among other successful channel swimmers. She wrote, Rose Olivia Hawkins 14.5 hours 1st September 2017 . Best and worst day ever . Rose has raised over £14,000 for four charities - Marie Curie, British Heart Foundation, Medical Detection Dogs, and Willen Hospice. Rose would like to thank everybody for their support and sponsorship, she has been overwhelmed by their generosity and interest.

PPI Reclaim Advice Have you been Plevined?

Almost certainly you’ve no idea. Recently the financial regulator, the FCA, launched a two year Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) reclaiming deadline, even getting Arnie to star in its ads. But I’ve been at the forefront of PPI reclaiming for a decade, so now I’m ‘back’ saying everyone should be asking themselves about this hidden new Plevin PPI rule.

First the basics – what is PPI and this deadline?

Payment Protection Insurance - PPI - was systemically mis-sold by banks and building societies who for decades used hard sells or even lies to add it to loans, credit cards, mortgages and other forms of debt – already well over £27 billion has been paid back. Common types of mis-selling include: • Lied to you that you had to have PPI (it was never compulsory) • Had PPI added without your permission • Lied to that PPI would get you a better deal • Given PPI when it was inappropriate such as ‘unemployment cover’ for those who were selfemployed, or not being asked about pre-existing conditions that could invalidate it. It was said to cover your repayments if you lost your job or got sick, but actually at most it paid out for a year, and the maximum pay-out for some policies was actually less than it cost. If you think you may be owed money – or haven’t a clue - don’t delay check now. You don’t need to pay a firm to find your PPI or get it back for you; you can do it for FREE. You asked us, ‘Have you been Plevined’, what’s that about?

At the same time as launching the PPI deadline – a totally new category of PPI mis-selling has been introduced and it’s a total game changer. In the past, to reclaim PPI you had to have been mis-sold it. This new rules means, pretty much, if you had PPI from a bank on a product active since 2008, you’re owed some money. It’s based on a 2014 court case brought by Susan Plevin. The court ruled as she wasn’t told about the huge amount of commission taken from her PPI payment – 71% - she was mis-sold it. When banks sold PPI they received most of the policies cost in commission, which shows what a bad value product it was. The regulator’s new Plevin rule says if over 50% of your PPI’s cost went as commission to the lender, and that wasn’t explained to you, you’re due back the extra above that.

Caring For House Plants Plants can add a special feel to any home - they make a great feature, soften harsh corners and bring a room to life. Aside from their aesthetic value, many species clean the air by removing pollutants - Ivy, Spathiphyllum, Scindapsus, Chlorophytum, for example. While summer can provide excellent conditions for our green companions at home, central heating turns a room hot and dry like a desert. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of house plants.

Buying plants

Plants from a reputable garden centre may cost a little more, but they are hardened to withstand the shock of being moved from warm, bright and humid greenhouses to the dry, centrally heated homes we tend to inhabit. To save money, start with smaller plants and learn to propagate them. Respect the plant’s individual needs Each plant has its own needs for light, water, air humidity and room temperature so it pays to keep a book for reference, just hold on to the label with the plant’s name as they are not the easiest to memorize. Alterna-

tively, use a website to identify your plants. There are now even phone apps that can identify a plant from a photograph! Some plants are fussy while others are more tolerant of their environment (and their owner’s mistakes), but anyone can grow plants at home – the secret is to choose the right plant for the conditions you have, and accept that certain beauties are not meant to last. One example of this is Poinsettia, the Christmas plant. It is sold with the intention to be enjoyed while it lasts, and discarded afterwards. If you like flowering plants, try orchids. They are now available in easy-to-grow varieties, and with care-

Very few plants can survive being roasted on a south facing window sill, or dumped in a dark corner far away from any daylight. Try to place your plants in different places in your home, especially as the seasons change, but bear in mind that some varieties will sulk if you keep moving them around too much. After a while you will discover the golden spot for each plant. In winter, don’t trap the plants between a cold, drafty window and a curtain, with the heat of the radiator in between.

Watering

Unfortunately, overwatering is a common mistake – keeping the compost around the roots waterlogged will bring a plant close to its death. House plants need less water than we tend to think, especially in winter, so let them ‘hibernate’ by reducing watering in winter, and they will reward you with better growth in the spring. You can rescue a drowning plant by taking it out of its pot, cleaning the pot thoroughly and gently shaking the plant’s roots off the waterlogged soil. Let it dry out a little, and re-plant in fresh compost. Some plants need a specific method of watering. For example, Saintpaulia (African Violet) likes tepid water and having the bottom of the pot immersed, rather than traditional watering from the top. However, if you pander to its needs, Saintpaulia will thank you with beautiful velvety flowers a few times a year.

Misting

Most plants like humidity so if the furniture allows it, mist the air around the foliage, especially when the air is dry. If your environment is quite humid already, spraying more could encourage mould, both on the plant’s compost and in your home.

Troubleshooting

Over time, you will learn the language your plants speak - floppy leaves, yellowing edges, wonky shapes... They are the plant’s cries for better conditions. Get the handbook out, look up the plant, and identify the trouble. Is the plant too cold? Suffering in a drafty hall? Too much water or dry air? You’ll soon get the hang of it. Deal with pests as soon as they appear Infestation with little flies can appear anytime, especially on waterlogged plants, so deal with them before they spread to other plants. Sprays available in garden centres and supermarkets can eradicate many pests.

Did you know? Those large display plants in big entrance halls and public buildings are often rented and get replaced at the first sign of trouble to ensure a perfect display all year around. Plants in an average home will rarely compare to such perfection but do take notice of the thriving plants in other people’s homes.

Like most people, house plants like company, so place them together. Put the tall ones at the back and smaller ones in the front, or arrange them in a circle with the tallest one in the middle. The more variety in size, colour and shape, the better. Once you have created an arrangement that is pleasing to look at, you’ll be hooked – growing plants is addictive!

Pyracantha (Firethorn) These famously prickly evergreen shrubs are ideal for training against walls - not only to show their wonderful berries off to their best but also to deter opportunist burglars, thanks to the sharp thorns. They can also be grown as free-standing bushes, and most will be producing berries now in varying shades of red, orange or yellow. Birds tend to leave them alone, so the berries

can remain until Christmas and beyond. The most popular is P coccinea ‘Lalandel’, which produces orange-red berries, while ‘Orange Glow’ provides excellent orange berries and ‘Soleil d’Or’ has yellow berries. Plants will grow to 2.5m x 2.5m and look wonderful if trained as espaliers. They thrive in any reasonable garden soil in sun and partial shade.

Good Enough to Eat!

Pumpkins

A pumpkin is not just for Halloween they can make great soups and pies, and are really not difficult to grow. These huge orange veg need a long, hot growing season to fully ripen, and are best planted in fertile, moist soil in the sun. Sow seeds indoors in April and plant out when all risk of frost has passed, protecting the young plants with cloches if the weather turns really cold. Give the plants some liquid fertiliser every two weeks and water during particularly hot or dry spells. They make a good strong root system so, once established, they are not as thirsty as courgettes. When growing large cultivars, remove the growing tip when three fruits have set, giving them a better chance of ripening. If you only want one giant pumpkin, just leave one fruit on each plant. Put a layer of straw or a board under the fruits to keep them clean, and let them ripen on the ground until they sound hollow when tapped. Good varieties include ‘Triple Treat’, which is round and orange with tasty flesh, and ‘Becky’, a medium-sized variety ideal for carving. If pumpkins are fully ripened, they should develop a hard skin which will help it last in storage for months.

Calories are often spoken about when we are trying to reduce our weight, but what is a calorie? In simple terms it is a unit of energy. Food is fuel, simple! As humans the only reason we should consume food is to fuel the body for the activities the body needs to carry out through the day. For some people the activities will require a lot of fuel. For example, a builder on a building site will require a lot more fuel than an office worker who sits at a desk for most of the day. However, even the builder doesn’t require as much fuel as you might think. Modern technology is making all of our lives easier and even the builder doesn’t burn as much energy as they perhaps once did. These modern tools, along with health and safety requirements, means that a lot of manual labour is now done by machines and electric tools. You could say that modern life is causing many health problems. We are eating more and doing less physical exercise. Every food has a calorific value which is usually displayed on the label but sometimes they can be difficult to understand. Slimming clubs often refer to foods as sins or points, but all they have done is calculate the energy provisions of food and put it into “easier” terms of reference. But does this make it easier? Not really because the majority of food packaging does not list how many points or sins are in the packet. So you then have to refer to your diet app or book to calculate it. This also makes you more inclined to purchase the diet brands as they are easier to calculate... and usually more expensive making a LOT of profit for the diet companies. Working out your calorie requirement is quite simple, but first you need to calculate if you need more or less calories. Using the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation is a quick and simple way (easy to do online) to find out what your BMI is. BMI is used by doctors, health professionals and the armed forces to determine whether a person is overweight, underweight or ‘normal’.

IT’S good to see a manufacturer cutting their cloth according to their cabriolet these days. When others have taken the tin top route, there’s a definite tick in the ‘traditional’ box from Mercedes-Benz with smart fold down fabric roofs adorning their cabriolet models. The latest to vie for your attention – and subsequent cash – is a rather fetching offering from the three pointed star stable in the shape of the C-Class Cabriolet. Its distinctive silhouette is pretty unmistakable – and you wouldn’t mistake it for anything other than a Merc. That classic fabric soft top, which whirrs and clicks and folds away in a matter of seconds, has so many layers that even when the temperature plummets, you stay snugly cocooned inside. Which wasn’t a problem during our spell with the car, when the big yellowy thing in the sky made one of its infrequent visits to these shores and actually hung around for a few days.

Looking Up! See the Milky Way from the Chilterns: Mid October and Mid November this year is a great time to head up into the Chilterns for a glimpse of the Milky Way. Places like Ivinghoe Beacon and Coombe Hill are dark enough to reveal a band of hazy light crossing overhead. You don’t need binoculars or a telescope - just your eyes and the knowledge that hazy band of light you’re seeing is the aggregated starlight of billions of stars amassed in the spiral arms of our home galaxy. Follow the International Space Station over Bedfordshire: Sunday 1st October until Thursday 12th October sees the International Space Station (ISS) sail silently overhead. Catch this orbiting science centre as a bright point of light moving steadily across the sky at various times between 7:30pm and 8:30pm until the 12th. Exact timings can be found online. In early November the ISS is back again, but in the morning sky. Look for it ahead of sunrise between 5am and 6:30am. Catch a Falling Star: Two meteor showers reach their peak activity this autumn. The night of 20th - 21st October sees the Orionids hit their stride with a rate of up to 25 shooting stars per hour between midnight and dawn. November 17th - 18th is another great night to look for shooting stars in the pre-dawn sky, this time with the Leonids producing up to 20 shooting stars per hour. Pension Poverty On The Rise

overnment figures showed in April this year that there were 1.9 million pensioners in relatively low income after housing costs in 2015/16 representing 16% of all pensioners. This figure shows a rise in pensioner poverty in the last ear by 300,000. The Conservatives stated in their election campaign that they would remove the guarantee - introduced by David Cameron in 2010 and re-affirmed at the start of 2015 Parliamentary session - that the state pension would rise by 2.5%, the rate of inflation, or average earning growth, whichever is the largest. The present government has not altered this statement in any way at present. At the moment it would appear that the statement is unlikely to change until the next general election. It would therefore indicate that the low level income for 1.9 million pensioners is likely to increase over the next few years and onwards if the next government does not

The sum she was left with for food and other essentials was £30.00 a week. As she stated, she could manage, there are probably many more like her who can exist on a pittance. But assistance is available to such people. Claims can be made for assistance, all you have to know is who should be contacted to ask for such assistance. The lady in question, knew nothing about such assistance - she could manage. I wonder how many there are like her? That leads to the final question - Should there be, in a civilised country, such a thing as Pensioner Poverty?

Think of all the TV ads, films, even football matches where you were singing along to a piece of classical music. Who could forget Pavarotti and friends performing Nessun Dorma at World Cup celebrations? For those who like to sing and can hold a tune - even if it’s only in the shower - the Danesborough Chorus is currently recruiting in all voice parts for its 43rd season. This 100-strong choir performs a wide range of classical music, religious and secular, by the world’s great composers over the centuries, ranging from Mozart, Elgar and Rachmaninoff to modern composers, such as Karl Jenkins and Howard Goodall.
