Revitalising Dunstable
Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!
I write this during the week of national mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles III has ascended to the throne and is now travelling across the whole of the country meeting his subjects and establishing himself as the new monarch, together with his Queen Consort, Camilla. Christ Church Dunstable stands with the nation as we thank God for the Queen’s long and faithful reign, and as we pray for God’s wisdom and blessing on the new King as he begins his reign. History and change run side by side, and it is already clear that King Charles embodies vital constitutional continuity with his mother’s reign. Yet, by early October, when you receive this issue of ‘the Vine’ some of the inevitable changes may be visible, such as the first of the new King Charles III stamps, or the new coins. Even though this has been a time of some change for us all in relation to national leadership, this is also a great time to be a philatelist or a numismatist! As I think of our response as a community in the light of this event, I have been struck by a repeated expression that there was comfort in the idea that ‘the Queen has always been there’. This has come through in so many different tributes and comments from so many through all of society. The concept of ‘the constant’ is a significant thing. We like there to be something in our lives which stays the same. Children may have a blanket or teddy for comfort; whatever happens it’s always there for them. We may like to have things a specific way in our homes; whatever happens throughout our day at least our home is the way we like it. And in a subtle way over the last 70 years the Queen has been an underlying and relatively unchanging figure. She was there through wars, through fifteen prime ministers, the development of technologies, and in so many other ways. Everything changes... but who stayed the same? The Queen. And her annual speech at 3pm on Christmas day was like a milestone of stability. But now the constant has changed. When my wife says she wants to watch the King’s speech this Christmas I won’t know if I’m going to be watching King Charles III or Colin Firth! This change of ‘the constant’ can have a deep and unsettling effect on people. It reminds us of the truth of God’s Word, the Bible, as the psalmist says,

“The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it
is gone, …” (Psalm 103:15-16) Our mortality can cause us to worry, but we need not be anxious. Throughout her reign Queen Elizabeth II gave us sound advice, and in 2014 she said with great wisdom, “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace...is an inspiration and an anchor in my life.” While some may have found their constant in the Queen, the Queen found her’s in the eternal King of heaven and earth, Jesus Christ. The same Psalm 103 continues saying,
“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him” (Psalm 103:17).
God’s love for his people, those who turn to him, is an unending constant that will never change and one that we can trust in as an anchor for our lives, and into eternity. Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and Dunstable Town Mayor proclaim the accession of King Charles III
The historic event took place in Grove House Gardens on Sunday 11 September. Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Cynthia Gresham, and Dunstable Town Mayor, Cllr. Liz Jones hosted a Proclamation ceremony in Grove House Gardens. The ceremony took place on Sunday 11 September 2022, and was attended by local residents, representatives of local organisations, Town and Central Bedfordshire Councillors and past Mayors of Dunstable. The ceremony saw the Deputy Lieutenant introduce the accession proclamation, and Cllr. Jones read the proclamation of the accession of King Charles III, followed by three cheers for the new Sovereign. Dunstable Town Band then played the National Anthem, and all those in attendance sang along. The Deputy Lieutenant and the Mayor then walked to Priory Gardens to lay floral tributes. Dunstable Town Mayor, Cllr. Liz Jones said: “It was a complete honour and privilege to read the Proclamation at this afternoon’s gathering. It was lovely to have so many people come out to watch and take part, and to then walk with us to Priory Gardens to lay the floral tributes.”
