Local Mother Hosts Charity Gala Night Local mother hosts Gala Ball in memory of her stillborn son and raises money for local charities Luton mum, Sandra McCalla, who lost her son, Andrew, 16 years ago when he was stillborn, is hosting a Gala Ball on Friday, 6th October in Luton, and raising money for two local charities in his memory. In the recent #15babiesaday campaign, Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) shared the tragic statistic that 15 babies die before, during or shortly after birth in the UK every single day. Sandra says, “Losing Andrew was a very devastating time in my life. I was young and overjoyed at the thought of becoming a mum for the first time. However, sadly 24 weeks into my pregnancy, to our complete shock and horror, the doctors told us that our baby had died inside of me. Although very painful, what was to follow was a journey that completely changed my life. Through the support of friends, family and counselling, I found hope after loss. It was really hard, but I would really like to use my experience to reach out to others.” As part of her drive to raise awareness, she is organising Andrew’s Night Charity Gala Ball with proceeds going to The Luton and Dunstable NICU Appeal and Friends of CHUMS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Bereavement Service). Sandra says that, “Holding the Gala Ball will help to keep Andrew’s memory alive, and raise money for two amazing charities who are helping and supporting others.” Bianca John, Community Fundraiser for the Luton and Dunstable Hospital says, “The Luton and Dunstable Hospital Charity are always very appreciative of those in the community who take the time to organise fundraising events and who choose us as the recipient of their donation. It is an honour as every little bit of support we receive is very much needed. Events like Andrews Night are a testament to how kind people can be, and we are extremely grateful. We wish Sandra and her team every success with the event.”

Meg Davies, Community Fundraising Manager for Friends of CHUMS says, ‘We are delighted to be involved in the upcoming Charity Gala Ball on 6th October, in memory of Andrew. Money raised from the event will go towards our Stillbirth & Neonatal Bereavement Service which supports families who have a lost a baby at birth or shortly afterwards. Without funding, we would not be able to continue offering this vital service which supports bereaved parents and families, and offers them a lifeline of support and counselling through this extremely difficult time.’ If you’d like to support, you’re invited to attend Andrew’s Night Charity Gala Ball, on Friday 6th October at The Auction House, Crescent Road, Luton, at 6.45pm. The night will include a pre-dinner drinks reception, 3 course meal, silent auction and spectacular raffle prizes. The night will be compered by local BBC Radio Presenter, Roberto Perrone, with special guest attending David Monteith (Inspirational Father Winner Award, Butterfly Awards 2015). Live entertainment will include an Argentine Tango by Trudi Clark (Lead Dancer of ITV's 'The Halcyon', Fellow IDTA from Mirrors Dance) and disco/open dance floor by DJG International DJ (Golden Globes and Monaco Grand Prix), and much more.

A Charity Close To Home Raising money is more than just a good deed for Lutonian, David Mullins. David Mullins, a 51-year-old man from Luton walked an incredible 25 kilometres across London to raise over £1,000 for national Alzheimer’s Society charity. Mr Mullins crossed over 16 different bridges to reach his goal and achieved an incredible 4 hours and 51 minutes completion. Less than three years ago Mr Mullins joined a local Slimming World club in Luton. After making good progress in his first two years as a member, he decided to do a sponsored walk for Alzheimer’s Society last September. This decision was made due to Mr Mullins witnessing his father suffer with the disease. Luton Community Housing (LCH) a non-profit housing association based in Luton and Dunstable dedicated to providing affordable homes for vulnerable people decided to sponsor Mr Mullins in his quest to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Society. As LCH are a charitable local housing association, personal stories and fundraising events are always something that the organisation like to get behind. A representative from the organisation commented: “When we heard about Mr Mullin’s success in losing weight and his sad story around Alzheimer’s, we knew we had to get behind him in promoting the incredible work the charity does. We are so proud of Mr Mullin’s for his personal achievements and raising money for such an inspiring cause. A cause that helped us choose Alzheimer’s Society as our charity of the year.” Mr Mullins commented: “I would like to thank LCH very much for the kind sponsorship of my walk and was very happy to wear the local organisation’s logo across London. I did the walk for the Alzheimer's Society as it's a charity very close to home. My father has Alzheimer’s and I wanted to raise some money in return for all the great support and help we as a family have received from them. So thanks to everyone who got behind me on the day. I couldn’t have done it without the support.” The sponsored walks are not only helping a variety of people in need. In less than three years David has lost seven stone as a direct result of training and participating in sponsored walks like this. David has already set himself a new challenge, to walk 50 kilometres along the path from London to Brighton. We wish him all the luck in the world for his next venture!

Remember, Remember, The Fifth Of November Gunpowder, Treason and ploT

The sixteenth century will be remembered for its religious which had occurred in 1601 and 1603 and resorted to his bitterness when Catholics and Protestants were at each true self: namely he became extremely anti Catholic. other’s throats during and following the reign of Henry This did nothing to stem the feelings of catholic revolt 8th. In 1533 he had broken with the Church of Rome and which had festered for years. They were gradually translatset up his own Church in England - and this act on his part ed into a genuine plot against Protestantism in general and had gone down like a lead balloon over much of England the desire for a return to Rome. Although catholics were and the whole of Catholic Europe. in a small minority, a number came from old aristocratic The religious bigotry continued with a vengeance through- families with powerful friends and sympathisers - especially out both the reigns of Edward 6th and Mary 1st and it in the Midland areas. wasn’t until Elizabeth 1st came to the throne that there was Principal amongst these plotters (known as recursants) was some attempt at moderation; albeit within a framework of Robert Catesby who carefully collected a few equally faa Protestant England. During this time, catholics made up natical and determined followers. The coming of James 1st a small (but very discontented and vociferous) minority and his obvious dislike of catholics stirred their particular and were fined for not attending the “established” church, pot only further; so much so that they plotted to blow up were not allowed to conduct Mass and, both the King, the Palace of Westminster and generally speaking, had something of a rough all sitting MPs when they met for the State time (but at least they weren’t burnt at the opening of Parliament on November 5th, stake as had previously been the lot of sup1605. It was an outrageously ambitious plot posed heretics). requiring great planning and final execution Following Elizabeth’s death in 1603 - with if it were to succeed. They also needed a lot no natural successor – the crown passed to of luck. But they were driven by religious James 6th of Scotland who now became fervour. James 1st of England. He was the son of the Catesby managed to secure the allegiance of devout catholic, Mary Queen of Scots, and a certain ex soldier named Guy Fawkes who English catholics hoped (and assumed) that had had 10 years of service and had become James would make life easier for them. But expert in explosives. He changed his name to James had never seen his mother after the Guido (so as to sound more Italian in order to age of one and had been raised by strict Scotimpress the ladies). Altogether there were 13 James I tish Presbyterian guardians (all hell fire and central conspirators principal amongst whom brimstone!) and, although he tried to continue Elizabeth’s were Catesby, Fawkes, Thomas Percy and Sir Everard (comparitively) moderate treatment of catholics at first, Digby. But a Jesuit priest, Henry Garnet, also knew about he quickly became alarmed over minor Catholic rebellions the plot but kept quiet claiming “confidentiality of the

confessional”. There were a few others who, most likely, had some inkling of what was going on but who also kept their heads below the parapet. As the time grew nearer, it is suspected that one of the inner circle (not actually known but thought to be (perhaps) Tresham) felt that the magnitude of the intended outcome was excessive and wrote a letter, anonymously, to Lord Monteagle warning him not to attend the opening of Parliament. A passage in this letter reads “they shall receive a terrible blow, this Parliament; and yet they shall not see who hurts them”. The receipt of this letter gave forewarning that something really serious was planned and heralded an upsurge in security. As part of the plot, an undercroft below the Houses of Parliament had been leased and 36 barrels of gunpowder had been illicitly purchased and stored therein under a cover of wood, iron and other debris in an attempt to conceal them from casual glance. The plotters had hoped that with the demise of the King and Parliament, England would be without any form of government and that the King of Spain could step into the vacuum thus created with the consequent return to Rome and catholicism. But Fawkes was caught red handed in the undercroft ready to ignite the gunpowder. It was a close call. Fawkes gave his name as John Johnson, invented some cock and bull story, and was taken for questioning. For some time he refused to admit that he was party to any conspiracy but eventually he was “The Rack” subjected to increasing torture on the rack where, finally, he gave the names of all his compatriots and their subsequent intentions. The arrest of Fawkes was the necessary impetus for those remaining in London to flee northwards with the intention of rallying further support and the abduction of Princess Elizabeth, the king’s nine year old daughter. The party split up but some stayed overnight at Dunstable, Hockliffe and Brickhill before regrouping the next day to continue to Warwickshire and finally to Holbeche House in Staffordshire. But they did not receive the support they had expected – people were terrified of being branded as traitors if discovered – nor did they abduct the princess as a bargaining chip as originally intended. But they got as far as Holbeche House where they were involved in a fire fight – shades of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - such that a few

of them were killed. Those who survived were taken into custody and transported back to London. They were not tried in a court of law – they were already assumed guilty of treason – and were condemned to be executed by the barbaric practice of being hanged, drawn and quartered. But many historians consider that the whole episode was partly, if not wholly, engineered by the Government and that the “security forces” were always one step ahead of the unsuspecting conspiritors. Amazing though this may sound, the king and his government were determined to blacken the name of Catholicism by whatever means possible and this “demonstration” of catholic treason was extremely good propaganda. In fact, before being popularly known as the Gunpowder Plot, it was known as either the Gunpowder Treason Plot or the Jesuit Treason Plot. The net result was that catholics were just about tolerated but were treated with the greatest suspicion and not allowed to hold high office for some considerable period. However, and although James might have won this particular round such that the country was spared from

Guido Faw kes signatur e (before and after rackin g).

another spell of catholic rule , his reign cannot be regarded as popular. He considered himself as “divine” and, therefore, beyond any guidance or criticism. Consequently he regarded Parliament with the utmost contempt and considered its only purpose was to grant him money for a very profligate lifestyle. What is more, and although married, he is thought to have been essentially homosexual and “piqued himself on his great contempt for women”. Charles Dickens described him as “cunning, covetous, wasteful, idle, drunken, greedy, dirty, cowardly; a great swearer and the most conceited man on earth”. Sounds like a nice chap! He also annoyed the people of Dunstable with his imposition of a most unpopular vicar, Edward Alport, leading to much popular unrest. Then, after just over 20 years, in 1625, James 1st died to be replaced by his son, Charles 1st. People hoped that things might get better – in fact they got worse - culminating in the English Civil War. So much for the Stuarts. Issue 23 • October / November 2017

Caring For House Plants Plants can add a special feel to any home - they make a great feature, soften harsh corners and bring a room to life. Aside from their aesthetic value, many species clean the air by removing pollutants - Ivy, Spathiphyllum, Scindapsus, Chlorophytum, for example. While summer can provide excellent conditions for our green companions at home, central heating turns a room hot and dry like a desert. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of house plants.

Buying plants

Plants from a reputable garden centre may cost a little more, but they are hardened to withstand the shock of being moved from warm, bright and humid greenhouses to the dry, centrally heated homes we tend to inhabit. To save money, start with smaller plants and learn to propagate them. Respect the plant’s individual needs Each plant has its own needs for light, water, air humidity and room temperature so it pays to keep a book for reference, just hold on to the label with the plant’s name as they are not the easiest to memorize. Alterna-

tively, use a website to identify your plants. There are now even phone apps that can identify a plant from a photograph! Some plants are fussy while others are more tolerant of their environment (and their owner’s mistakes), but anyone can grow plants at home – the secret is to choose the right plant for the conditions you have, and accept that certain beauties are not meant to last. One example of this is Poinsettia, the Christmas plant. It is sold with the intention to be enjoyed while it lasts, and discarded afterwards. If you like flowering plants, try orchids. They are now available in easy-to-grow varieties, and with care-

12 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

Very few plants can survive being roasted on a south facing window sill, or dumped in a dark corner far away from any daylight. Try to place your plants in different places in your home, especially as the seasons change, but bear in mind that some varieties will sulk if you keep moving them around too much. After a while you will discover the golden spot for each plant. In winter, don’t trap the plants between a cold, drafty window and a curtain, with the heat of the radiator in between.

Watering

Unfortunately, overwatering is a common mistake – keeping the compost around the roots waterlogged will bring a plant close to its death. House plants need less water than we tend to think, especially in winter, so let them ‘hibernate’ by reducing watering in winter, and they will reward you with better growth in the spring. You can rescue a drowning plant by taking it out of its pot, cleaning the pot thoroughly and gently shaking the plant’s roots off the waterlogged soil. Let it dry out a little, and re-plant in fresh compost. Some plants need a specific method of watering. For example, Saintpaulia (African Violet) likes tepid water and having the bottom of the pot immersed, rather than traditional watering from the top. However, if you pander to its needs, Saintpaulia will thank you with beautiful velvety flowers a few times a year.

In Theen Gard A third of us are actively trying to encourage wildlife into our gardens - an increase of more than 30% compared with a decade ago, according to research by the Horticultural Trades Association.

Give Wildlife A Warm Welcome More products targeted at the wild bird market are available in garden centres and we can choose feeding regimes which will attract birds that we most want to see in our gardens, says the HTA, the trade association for the UK garden industry. Indeed, some 62% of us now regularly feed the birds in our garden and nearly a quarter provide nesting and breeding habitats. But birds are not the only wildlife we can look after during the winter months and beyond. By making leafy habitats and cosy corners, we will provide shelter for small animals who need to hibernate uninterrupted and for beneficial insects who will stop the nuisances ones such as aphids in their tracks.

October & November Best of The Bunch

Pyracantha (Firethorn) These famously prickly evergreen shrubs are ideal for training against walls - not only to show their wonderful berries off to their best but also to deter opportunist burglars, thanks to the sharp thorns. They can also be grown as free-standing bushes, and most will be producing berries now in varying shades of red, orange or yellow. Birds tend to leave them alone, so the berries

can remain until Christmas and beyond. The most popular is P coccinea ‘Lalandel’, which produces orange-red berries, while ‘Orange Glow’ provides excellent orange berries and ‘Soleil d’Or’ has yellow berries. Plants will grow to 2.5m x 2.5m and look wonderful if trained as espaliers. They thrive in any reasonable garden soil in sun and partial shade.

Good Enough to Eat!

Pumpkins

A pumpkin is not just for Halloween they can make great soups and pies, and are really not difficult to grow. These huge orange veg need a long, hot growing season to fully ripen, and are best planted in fertile, moist soil in the sun. Sow seeds indoors in April and plant out when all risk of frost has passed, protecting the young plants with cloches if the weather turns really cold. Give the plants some liquid fertiliser every two weeks and water during particularly hot or dry spells. They make a good strong root system so, once established, they are not as thirsty as courgettes. When growing large cultivars, remove the growing tip when three fruits have set, giving them a better chance of ripening. If you only want one giant pumpkin, just leave one fruit on each plant. Put a layer of straw or a board under the fruits to keep them clean, and let them ripen on the ground until they sound hollow when tapped. Good varieties include ‘Triple Treat’, which is round and orange with tasty flesh, and ‘Becky’, a medium-sized variety ideal for carving. If pumpkins are fully ripened, they should develop a hard skin which will help it last in storage for months.

Jobs To Do...

• Plant new climbers, shrubs and trees while the soil is still warm. • Take cuttings or save tender plants when you clear out summer containers if you have space to overwinter them. • Check the greenhouse heating and insulate to save heat. • Make sure bowls of bulbs being forced for indoor flowering don't dry out. • As land becomes vacant in the vegetable plot, start digging when ground conditions are good, leaving the ground rough to allow the frost to penetrate. • Protect strawberries potted for forcing early next year against frost by putting them in a cold frame. • Continue to plant biennials such as foxglove, Canterbury bells and honesty. • Check over brassicas for caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly and pick off any you find. • Once leaves have fallen, prune gooseberries. • Mow your lawn less frequently as growth slows down, and raise the height of the cutting blades.

3 ways to... Combine plants to help each other...

1 2 3

Plant runner beans with sunflowers. The beans donate nitrate to the sunflowers and can use them to climb up. Grow chives under roses to suppress fungal diseases, especially blackspot.

Grow rhubarb close to aquilegias, to deter red spider mite.

Calories Explained Negative Caloric Balance Weight Loss

1800 Calories

2300 Calories

Positive Caloric Balance Weight Gain

2300 Calories

Calories are often spoken about when we are trying to reduce our weight, but what is a calorie? In simple terms it is a unit of energy. Food is fuel, simple! As humans the only reason we should consume food is to fuel the body for the activities the body needs to carry out through the day. For some people the activities will require a lot of fuel. For example, a builder on a building site will require a lot more fuel than an office worker who sits at a desk for most of the day. However, even the builder doesn’t require as much fuel as you might think. Modern technology is making all of our lives easier and even the builder doesn’t burn as much energy as they perhaps once did. These modern tools, along with health and safety requirements, means that a lot of manual labour is now done by machines and electric tools. You could say that modern life is causing many health problems. We are eating more and doing less physical exercise. Every food has a calorific value which is usually displayed on the label but sometimes they can be difficult to understand. Slimming clubs often refer to foods as sins or points, but all they have done is calculate the energy provisions of food and put it into “easier” terms of reference. But does this make it easier? Not really because the majority of food packaging does not list how many points or sins are in the packet. So you then have to refer to your diet app or book to calculate it. This also makes you more inclined to purchase the diet brands as they are easier to calculate... and usually more expensive making a LOT of profit for the diet companies. Working out your calorie requirement is quite simple, but first you need to calculate if you need more or less calories. Using the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation is a quick and simple way (easy to do online) to find out what your BMI is. BMI is used by doctors, health professionals and the armed forces to determine whether a person is overweight, underweight or ‘normal’.

BMI= Height

Isocaloric Balance Weight Maintained

2000 Calories

The average man should consume 2500 calories per day and the average woman 2000 calories per day. If you are overweight and want to reduce your weight then you have 3 options. Option 1: Reduce current calorie intake and maintain current activity levels. Option 2: Maintain current calorie intake and increase current activity levels. Option 3: Reduce current calorie intake and increase current activity levels. Option 3 will be the most effective (and fastest) option for reducing your body fat levels while also increasing your health and fitness levels, just as long as you are sensible and do things in moderation. I would always advise speaking to a professional trainer for help and advice on how to get the best results. We all want to look good, that’s why we buy nice clothes, get our hair styled, pretty nails, fake tans, expensive make up, gym memberships, but surely our health and fitness is the most important factor and yet the majority of people ignore it. For more information on how we can kick start your healthier future, get in touch.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

PPI Reclaim Advice Have you been Plevined?

@martinslewis

Q

Almost certainly you’ve no idea. Recently the financial regulator, the FCA, launched a two year Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) reclaiming deadline, even getting Arnie to star in its ads. But I’ve been at the forefront of PPI reclaiming for a decade, so now I’m ‘back’ saying everyone should be asking themselves about this hidden new Plevin PPI rule.

First the basics – what is PPI and this deadline?

Payment Protection Insurance - PPI - was systemically mis-sold by banks and building societies who for decades used hard sells or even lies to add it to loans, credit cards, mortgages and other forms of debt – already well over £27 billion has been paid back. Common types of mis-selling include: • Lied to you that you had to have PPI (it was never compulsory) • Had PPI added without your permission • Lied to that PPI would get you a better deal • Given PPI when it was inappropriate such as ‘unemployment cover’ for those who were selfemployed, or not being asked about pre-existing conditions that could invalidate it. It was said to cover your repayments if you lost your job or got sick, but actually at most it paid out for a year, and the maximum pay-out for some policies was actually less than it cost. If you think you may be owed money – or haven’t a clue - don’t delay check now. You don’t need to pay a firm to find your PPI or get it back for you; you can do it for FREE. For full help see the free PPI reclaiming tool and help (including Plevin) at

22 www.thevinemagazine.co.uk

www.mse.me/ppi, plus there’s more free help at www.which.co.uk and www.fca.org. And it’s worth doing, I’m constantly swamped with successes like Paul Smith who tweeted me: @MartinSLewis I have seen you banging on about PPI for years. I thought I would give it a try and I got £18,000 pounds back.”

Q

You asked us, ‘Have you been Plevined’, what’s that about?

At the same time as launching the PPI deadline – a totally new category of PPI mis-selling has been introduced and it’s a total game changer. In the past, to reclaim PPI you had to have been mis-sold it. This new rules means, pretty much, if you had PPI from a bank on a product active since 2008, you’re owed some money. It’s based on a 2014 court case brought by Susan Plevin. The court ruled as she wasn’t told about the huge amount of commission taken from her PPI payment – 71% - she was mis-sold it. When banks sold PPI they received most of the policies cost in commission, which shows what a bad value product it was. The regulator’s new Plevin rule says if over 50% of your PPI’s cost went as commission to the lender, and that wasn’t explained to you, you’re due back the extra above that.

Money Matters Money Matters

Staggeringly the AVERAGE commission banks Staggeringly AVERAGE commission were paid wasthe 67% and I’ve never heard ofbanks anyone were paid was 67% and I’ve never of of anyone who was told about it. This means heard millions who was told about it. This millions of people who’ve had PPI, evenmeans if it was sold correctly people had are PPI,due even if it was back. sold correctly in everywho’ve other way, something On a in every other way, are due something back. On a £10,000 loan over five years, ‘Plevin’ compensation £10,000 loan over five years, ‘Plevin’ compensation would typically be £500 and a lot more if you were would typically beways. £500 and a lot more if you were mis-sold in other mis-sold in other ways.

Q Q

So if I have been Plevined, So if Ido have been Plevined, what I do? what do I do?

This depends on your situation and whether you’ve This your and whether you’ve tried depends to reclaimonPPI in situation the past… tried to reclaim PPI in the past… Already claimed and received money. Mercedes-Benz

C220 C220 AMG Line 4Matic Cabriolet

IT’S good to see a manufacturer cutting their cloth according to their cabriolet these days. When others have taken the tin top route, there’s a definite tick in the ‘traditional’ box from Mercedes-Benz with smart fold down fabric roofs adorning their cabriolet models. The latest to vie for your attention – and subsequent cash – is a rather fetching offering from the three pointed star stable in the shape of the C-Class Cabriolet. Its distinctive silhouette is pretty unmistakable – and you wouldn’t mistake it for anything other than a Merc. That classic fabric soft top, which whirrs and clicks and folds away in a matter of seconds, has so many layers that even when the temperature plummets, you stay snugly cocooned inside. Which wasn’t a problem during our spell with the car, when the big yellowy thing in the sky made one of its infrequent visits to these shores and actually hung around for a few days.

fading to a brilliant white – just one of the neat touches adorning the C220. It’s a superbly comfortable car behind the wheel with your ideal driving position achieved by fiddling with the electric control panel on the door. And that might dictate who can sit in the back. While it’s billed as a four seater, and can be used as such, rear leg room is limited if the driver is selfish and demands more space for himself than his occupants. Small kids no problem, anyone over-sized is going to struggle. Roof down and with the electric rear deflector successfully deployed, wind buffeting is kept to a minimum if you keep your speed this side of sensible. It’s an effective draught excluder, though not in the sense of the old knitted snake your gran used to slap down behind the door, but dip into the performance (143mph top speed, 0-62 in 8.1 secs) and, well, you have been warned. Donald Trump would have a BIG problem...

- are among the best in class, as is the quality of the switches, buttons, dials and overall fit and finish. It’s a high quality cabin, exceptionally well kitted out, with a predominance of chrome edging, aluminium trim and leather, set off by some tidy black panelling on the centre console. It’s fairly quiet, warm and windproof. Sound a bit like my garden shed but there the comparison very definitely ends….. On the road the C220 displays impeccable road manners and poise. The precision when cornering or negotiating the many roundabouts of Milton Keynes is exemplary – no deviation from the line you’ve dialled in via the multi button steering wheel. And scuttle shake – the bane of many a cabriolet – is barely noticeable as the smooth nine speed auto box keeps everything moving along. C-Class has been a stalwart of the M-B range since back in 1982, but this is actually the first convertible to wear the C-Class badge in all that time. So, not just the boy Hamilton who has access to a quick and efficient car with the three pointed star up front...

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky

October & November 2017

DOVES DOMES COMES CODES NODES NOTES

Looking Up! See the Milky Way from the Chilterns: Mid October and Mid November this year is a great time to head up into the Chilterns for a glimpse of the Milky Way. Places like Ivinghoe Beacon and Coombe Hill are dark enough to reveal a band of hazy light crossing overhead. You don’t need binoculars or a telescope - just your eyes and the knowledge that hazy band of light you’re seeing is the aggregated starlight of billions of stars amassed in the spiral arms of our home galaxy.

Catch a Falling Star: Two meteor showers reach their peak activity this autumn. The night of 20th - 21st October sees the Orionids hit their stride with a rate of up to 25 shooting stars per hour between midnight and dawn. November 17th - 18th is another great night to look for shooting stars in the pre-dawn sky, this time with the Leonids producing up to 20 shooting stars per hour.

Follow the International Space Station over Bedfordshire: Sunday 1st October until Thursday 12th October sees the International Space Station (ISS) sail silently overhead. Catch this orbiting science centre as a bright point of light moving steadily across the sky at various times between 7:30pm and 8:30pm until the 12th. Exact timings can be found online. In early November the ISS is back again, but in the morning sky. Look for it ahead of sunrise between 5am and 6:30am.
