Revitalising Dunstable

Dunstable Is On The Up

I can see the changes as a resident while, as a councillor, I have the very great privilege of being part of the effort to help restore some of the charm the town had when I first came here more than 30 years ago. As a well-located and historic market town in a thriving area, Dunstable’s popularity is rising and, as a council, we need to make sure it meets this growing demand from residents and businesses. By now you might be aware of our Local Plan. This sets out how Central Bedfordshire will develop over the next 20 years. It outlines the strategy for ensuring the growth that we need is delivered in the right place, at the right time and is of the right character and quality. It also ensures that growth is delivered with the supporting roads, schools and services such as health, as well as retail, leisure and community facilities. We are consulting on the first draft of the Plan until August 29. I’d urge you to have your say on how we deliver 20,000-30,000 new homes across the whole of Central Bedfordshire, and up to 30,000 new jobs, as well as the supporting infrastructure such as roads, schools and GP surgeries, plus community and leisure facilities. But while we are planning for all of this over the next 20 years, we’re also focusing on improving existing communities. And this is why it is not just the future that is bright for Dunstable, but the present too. A good sign of this is the number of new businesses that are starting up or moving to the town. This brings prosperity, and we have already seen jobs flooding back into the area.

Just last month I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the Teamsport indoor go-karting track on the Woodside Industrial Estate – a first-class family entertainment venue that the council helped locate here. Teamsport, and many of the new businesses moving here, have been hugely influenced to come here because of the opening of the A5-M1 and the Woodside link roads. These key, strategic routes have already unlocked business and development, while bringing people quicker than ever before from the M1 into the town. As part of that work we are also de-trunking Dunstable High Street, which will see an area-wide weight limit scheme put in place and HGV lorry traffic re-routed away from the town centre, as will the new waste and recycling facility at Thorn Turn. This work will take a while to complete and the results of this and the new roads will take a few months for you to see the full effect. So please bear with us while we change over 500 road signs and help educate lorry drivers and logistics companies about the changes. This is all part of our long-term plan to improve the High Street which, with the community’s help, we want to actively reclaim and revive to its ancient status and function as a market town, while encouraging people to spend more time there. gradually see the transformation of what used to be Dunstable Leisure Centre, into a state-of-the-art £20.1million hub including a relocated Dunstable Library, (although the current one on Vernon Place will remain open until the new centre is built). And, in partnership with Dunstable Town Council, we’ve just celebrated the official opening of the new Bennett’s Splash Park and Splashside Café in Bennett Memorial Park. This is one of the first major initiatives brought forward by our £4million Market Town Regeneration Fund – worth around £1.25million in Dunstable – though the keen-eyed among you may have already noticed the Street Rangers doing a fine job of keeping the town centre clean. We’ve also co-funded the restoration of Priory Gates, leading into Priory Gardens, and work on Priory House and Grove House to ready bring out the best of these beautiful historic buildings when the sun goes down, with new architectural lighting. There are more initiatives planned in that programme, plus some exciting major new town centre regeneration schemes on the horizon. And, while I have to remain tight-lipped about those for the time being, let me just say that these will strengthen Dunstable town centre and stimulate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits. We hope to release the details later this year and then we’ll consult with residents to ensure you can have your say on what will further cement the exciting future now emerging for Dunstable. Anglia In Bloom Judging Day

A perfect summer’s day greeted Julia and Margaret, the two judges from A ‘ nglia in Bloom’, who visited the town on Monday 17th July. Our theme this year is all about ‘Flower Power’ and encouraging the local community to ‘Green Grey Britain’ The ‘Dunstable in Bloom’ team welcomed them to Priory House to view displays of all the work done during the past year. Then a stroll through Grove House gardens admiring some of the ‘Wheelie Fantastic’ floral wheelbarrows – 25 have been decorated in all and displayed around the town. En route a BBC 3 Counties interview took place. Next stop was to see the inspiring projects that the Vale Academy children have been working on during the summer. RHS School Gardening initiative has rewarded them with 30,000 vegetable, herb and flower seeds and green-fingered pupils have been growing plants from them and transforming grey spaces of the school into bright and beautiful wildlife habitats for bees and butterflies. The grounds are full of wonderful recycling ideas, willow sculptures and a fabulous bug hotel. Useful skills learnt for later life while having fun. ‘Incredible Edibles’ never ceases to amaze. A cheery crowd of helpers and residents were there to greet the judges – they even laid out a red carpet! A project creating seven new planters funded by RHS is now complete and each one has been adopted by local businesses in Katherine Drive. Their third Big Lunch was held in June with music and food using vegetables from the garden. A lovely walk followed crossing the Guided Busway, with a mass of wildflowers along the verges, and on to Blow’s Downs. This is a Nature Reserve cared for by the Wildlife Trust who work tirelessly to look after and promote the site. Their Youth Wildlife Rangers, aged 13 to 18, have

undertaken green hay spreading, scrub clearance, fence repairs and have helped with surveys of wildlife and plants. They also decorated a wheelbarrow and planted it up with native wildflowers – but sadly before the judges arrived most had been eaten by the cows which graze on the Downs! A wonderful welcome too at Priory View, the new Sheltered Housing opened by the Queen in April. Residents have created a Gardening Club and completely transformed the outside areas and roof gardens in under a year. It was a riot of colour and enjoyed by all. Southwood Road was next to see the now established drought garden, created on a roundabout, by the efforts of the local Resident’s Association. Another area transformed by residents is the wonderful oasis of colour at Eleanor’s Court and round the corner a front garden of exotics and a raised bed newly planted. The Town Council’s brilliant planters and hanging baskets on the Square are beautiful and much admired. Praise must be given to the staff who have kept these watered in such dry conditions. The judges then met the two Town Rangers who do such a brilliant job keeping the town centre clean and well cared for. The Mayor and Councillors and volunteers met the Judges during lunch at Priory House. The last tour was of Priory gardens with its croquet lawn and wonderful planting and learning about the history of the Priory Church. The interesting Medicinal Physic Garden was also visited. The final tour was Dunstable Cemetery which has been sympathetically extended and with help from volunteers kept in good order. The effort put in by all involved and the variety and enthusiasm shown at all the different venues with residents proud to show off Dunstable made the day a rewarding experience and must have impressed the judges.

Dunstable Cemetery is flying the flag as one of the UK’s very best green spaces A record number of parks and green spaces collect Green Flag Award including Dunstable Cemetery managed by Dunstable Town Council Dunstable Cemetery located in the heart of Dunstable has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. The cemetery is among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that have receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. Dunstable Town Council is extremely pleased and proud to have secured Green Flag status for Dunstable Cemetery and this is our third Green Flag site with the Council having already secured Green Flags for Priory and Grove House Gardens This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained by Dunstable Town Council and has excellent visitor facilities. Local Swimmer Takes On The English Channel www.thedunstablefootclinic.co.uk At the end of August an Eaton Bray resident and ex Dunstable Student, Rose Hawkins, aged 24, will be attempting to swim the English Channel! Rose has always loved swimming, having swam for the county and club whilst growing up, and her dedication to the sport, determination and positive attitude is sure to benefit her, not only in the huge challenge of swimming the Channel but also in the commitment to a gruelling training regime. Part of her training regime involves Rose attending Swim camps at Lake Windermere, Dover and Bournemouth. Rose completed a six hour qualifying swim on the 3rd June in Bournemouth and on 2nd July Rose swam the length of Lake Windermere and back, allowing for crossing etc., the distance travelled was 24 miles. Rose entered the water at 4.30am and swam continuously for 13 hours. She was accompanied by two men in a small boat guiding her and feeding her every hour. This was a huge challenge in itself and a big incentive towards her final Challenge. Rose is combining her open water sessions with indoor pool swimming and Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre have been very supportive and are providing an allocated lane for her to complete endurance swims. The Channel swim is 21 miles (shortest distance from Dover to Cap Gris-Nez) but there is a big chance she will swim much further (up to 35 miles) than that depending on the tides and shipping lanes. Roses expectation is to complete the swim between 12 - 16 hours. A pilot boat will accompany her, with her parents, sister and cousin onboard to supply her with food, support and sustenance via a pole and net as no contact with the boat is allowed. The swim will be attempted wearing just a costume, goggles, grease, and swim hat. A wetsuit is considered a buoyancy aid so is not permitted. Some of the hazards Rose may encounter are jelly fish stings, sharks, tankers, ferries in the shipping lanes, sewage, hyperthermia , tide changes every six hours and weather changes. The psychological effect is every bit as challenging as the physical. Rose is training every day despite holding down a full time job as a financial advisor in Milton Keynes. The commitment and determination she is showing is making all who know her extremely proud. Although this is a personal challenge for Rose she is hoping to raise money for four charities close to her heart; Marie curie, British heart foundation, Willen hospice and Medical detection dogs. Keech Garden Makeover

TV Gardener Adam Frost Opens New Courtyard Garden For Hospice Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost has transformed a Luton hospice’s drab concrete yard into a colourful garden paradise for seriously ill adults and children. The Courtyard Garden, which is a joint project between Keech Hospice Care and Greenfingers Charity, has been officially opened by the landscape designer today and he said he can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction. “I hope it surprises people to start with and then puts a smile on their faces. It’s a space people can use in many different ways,” said Adam. Until now the garden at Keech Hospice Care, which supports adults from Luton and South Bedfordshire, and children from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes, has remained relatively unchanged since the hospice opened twenty-six years ago. Adam said he designed the new garden to be a vision of bright colours, with a water at its centre and chose bold circular patterns to take visitors on a journey. “I didn’t want to be too clever, but it’s not just any place we are creating. It’s a space that mums and dads and their kids will use and where patients can look out to when they’re being cared for and having their complementary therapy.

“I’ve tried to bring the wildlife and the garden inside the hospice and give patients here at Keech Hospice Care a place that is calm and reflective,” said Adam. Liz Searle, Chief Executive Officer at Keech Hospice Care, said the new garden will give patients and their families a space to relax at a time in their lives when it matters the most. “It’s the perfect place to just sit and be still. It provides a beautiful space for the opportunity of reflecting, relaxing and escapism not only for patients but also our excellent care team and volunteers. At a time when a person needs peace and quiet or when families want to sit, laugh and make memories – Adam’s garden will be there. “We all love the bright colours of the garden as we are a hospice full of life! It’s a real oasis, it’s magical. We’ll be showing it off to the public at KeechFest on Sunday, 10 September 2017 as we invite everyone to join us for an afternoon of live music here at Keech Hospice Care.” The garden was designed by Adam Frost and Homebase Academy students working with landscapers Bespoke Outdoor Spaces. Keech Hospice Care, which relies on the community for 70 per cent of the £5.6million it needs every year to survive, applied to Greenfingers Charity for the garden back in 2015 and was awarded funding raised by Homebase through the 5p carrier bag tax. The Courtyard Garden will be open to the public to view at KeechFest on Sunday, 10th September. ‘Our Shed’

DUNSTABLE Men In Sheds

So, what is Our Shed about? Our Dunstable Shed was founded as a philanthropic organisation. In fact, it is a place which fosters the health and wellbeing of men. It does this by providing facilities enabling men to meet, pursue hobbies, practical interests, share skills, learn new ones, help in community-based projects and develop new ideas. Provided you’re 55+ you can join. We have members, who are out of work, carers needing time out, those with long term medical conditions and many who have retired. They come from all walks of life. More than anything, it’s a place to have some fun, chat, drink tea and enjoy good company. Current activities are based on Community projects that primarily involve woodworking, metalworking and craft working. But it’s the membership that decides what goes on in Our Shed. Got you interested in getting involved? Read on!

How we started: Our Shed started in February at our current location on the Meadway Allotment site. From these modest beginnings, our aim is to continue to grow our membership, improve our facilities and eventually move into larger premises. Currently, there are about 20 active members and a good many other local supporters. We are affiliated to the UK Men’s Sheds Association that provides practical support. Although actively supported by the above, Our Shed operates on a cooperative basis, where all members have an equal say. We do not have paid administration or supervision staff. Appointed members run it on a voluntary day-to-day basis. The Management Committee is responsible for guiding the Shed on what it does, raise money for its operation and above all, see that it stays viable, and you stay safe.

Our Shed provides a friendly and safe environment for men to meet, to share and develop their practical skills, learn new ones and enjoy their hobbies. We also look to make our contribution by engaging in community-based projects. Childcare Scheme

@martinslewis Parents take note! There’s a new kid on the block that could mean up to £2,000 to help towards childcare costs. The Tax Free Childcare scheme is to be gradually rolled out to everyone across the year. Yet with a range of childcare help already out there, you need to ensure you’re picking the right one. Thankfully figuring that out isn’t too difficult. First, see if you’re due free childcare, if not, go for free cash towards it, if not, grab a scheme that effectively discounts the cost. So I’m going to take you through it in that order, rather than just focus on the changes. When I’m talking about childcare, it’s worth noting the definition for this purpose is specifically Ofsted (or equivalent in the rest of the UK) registered nurseries, nannies, childminders, after-school clubs, or summer school (even if that’s all they go to).

Here’s a quick rundown of the main points…

Are you eligible for what will be up to 30 hours a week of FREE childcare?

Currently, in England for at least 38 weeks a year everyone with a three or four-year-old (or two year old if you’ve low income), is entitled to 15 hours a week of free state or private nursery childcare. From September 2017, this will increase to 30 hours a week, but only if you earn at least £115 a week (if a couple both parents must) but neither parent earns over £100,000 a year.

This isn’t without controversy though, as some nursery providers argue it won’t happen as the Government isn’t paying them enough – or they may ask parents to top it up, or increase costs to children who don’t qualify to make up the shortfall. The Childcare Vouchers scheme is run via employers, and you can only do it if your employer offers it – thankfully many do, especially bigger firms. What usually happens is your employer will let you trade in salary for vouchers. For example, a basic-rate

taxpayer can swap £1,000 of salary, which after tax and national insurance is only £700ish in your pay packet, for £1,000 in childcare vouchers. You can then use them to pay for childcare. So you’re up £300 per £1,000. Full help on this at: www.mse.me/childvouchers Any parent can do this, but vouchers are gradually being phased out due to the launch of the Tax Free Childcare. If you’re not part of a scheme by April 2018, you won’t be able to sign up after, so if it’s your winner (see point 5) don’t miss that. Even if you don’t need the vouchers, just get a very small amount to start, then you can increase it later. CHECK

Discounted childcare via the new TaxFree Childcare scheme

The new Tax-Free Childcare scheme is being rolled out to parents of the youngest children this month and should be available to all parents by the end of 2017. As it’s nothing to do with your employer, it’s likely many of those who couldn’t get vouchers, including the self-employed, will welcome it. For every 80p you put in a special account to pay for childcare at the Government-backed NS&I, the Government will add 20p up to a total of £8,000 per child. So that’s £2,000 added. Yet it’s only available if you earn over £115 a week (both of you must, if a couple) and neither earns over £100,000. Full info on the new scheme at: www.mse.me/taxfreechildcare.

Vouchers v Tax-Free Childcare! You can’t have both, so which wins?

This isn’t easy, I’ve done a full summary at: www.mse.me/taxfreechildcare#compare but in a nutshell…

Are you eligible for both schemes?

With childcare vouchers your employer has to offer it; but if it does, you can get it, regardless of how much you earn or whether your partner works or not (if a couple and both parents employers offer it, you can both get it). Yet, anyone can get Tax-Free Childcare, but there’s an income limit. You (both if a couple) have to meet the £115 income threshold and can’t earn over £100,000.

Which is best if you’re eligible for both? This

is where it gets really complex. There are two elements.

(1) The maximum gain from Tax free childcare is

much bigger, up to £2,000 per CHILD (eg, £6,000 for three kids), while vouchers is just £930 per PARENT for a basic-rate taxpayer (£624 for higher-rate, £590 for top-rate). (2) Yet the discount from Tax Free Childcare is just 20% off, while it’s bigger with vouchers at 32% for basic rate taxpayers (42% higher-rate, 47% top-rate). So those with bigger costs and more kids will tend to be better with Tax Free Childcare, while those with smaller costs and less kids, are better off with vouchers.

Health & Fitness As a personal trainer I have found that there are three common problems people have when they want to improve their fitness or to lose weight. Let’s explore these scenarios and look into why I hear the same excuses time and again. Which scenario do you fall into?

Finding the motivation to exercise can be hard, especially if you are unfit and your body struggles to walk up the stairs without getting short of breath! Or maybe your mates are asking you to go to the pub which is a much more desirable way to spend the evening and what about the winter when it’s freezing outside? Who wants to get out of bed at 6am and go for a run in the dark? Nobody! And that's why it's difficult to get started. A personal trainer should be setting you continuous goals that are achievable within a realistic time frame. Everybody wants to achieve things in life; we want to have a successful career, a happy family, nice holidays and a lovely home. Often our health & fitness get put to the bottom of the pile and rarely prioritised. Motivation and support is the key and by working with a professional you will be equipped to identify goals and better still, achieve them!

A recent survey showed that the average 45 year old has tried 61 different diets! If this sounds familiar to you and yet you still do not have the body you want than something isn’t working. The reason? Diets don’t work- fact! Think about it, if they did there would only be one available and it would be available on the NHS and we would not have an obesity crisis in our hospitals. Diet companies are businesses; they need your money to survive and they want you to keep coming back again and again so that you buy their products. If you have been going to the gym for a while now but nothing seems to be happening then you are not doing the correct amount and/or type of exercises. If you wanted a haircut would you do it yourself? Probably not, you would go to a professional hairdresser. Why is this any different with your health & fitness? Stop slogging away in the gym wasting hours of your time. Speak to a professional trainer and find out how you can effectively use your time to achieve the best results you can.

Another barrier to any weight loss or fitness goal is mindset. Think of a picture or photograph of yourself that you really like the way you look in . When was it? Why were you happy? Do your research and choose your hairdresser/salon well in advance. Social media sites are a great place to start as you can check out different styles that local salons have done for weddings. So have a peek on Facebook and see if you get a feel for any salons and try to create a shortlist. You might find that some salons have dedicated stylists that specialises in weddings. These are usually a good choice as these stylists will have lots of experience. Once you’ve chosen your salon, book a consultation. It’s never too early to have a chat about what you like or to discuss different ideas and options. Get your wedding day appointment booked in as early as possible too! Salons often get fully booked up, especially on weekends, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on your first choice. Here at Flicks & Bangs it’s not unusual have wedding

The salon can be great choice as there tends to be a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere and everything is already set up and on hand. Braids are very ‘in’ this year, especially very loose and ‘hippy’ styles which can be decorated with flowers. Don’t forget to consider bridesmaids and flower girls too! It can be expensive to pay for everyone to have their hair done, some brides pay for the dresses and the bridesmaids pay for hair and make-up. The key is to be open with your stylist and don’t be afraid to ask any questions! They are there to help you and make the whole day as stress free and as perfect for you as possible! Enjoy!

The Dress Comes Before The Hair When choosing a hair style for your big day, it is best to choose your dress first. This will give you (and your hairdresser) a better idea on the hair style. For example, whether you would like your hair up or down, having the dress can really help you decide on the most suitable cut, colour and style. A wedding hair trial is also a good idea as it will allow you to make any adjustments prior to the big day and help put your mind at ease.

The Week Before: Colour & Cut It’s always best to have the colour and cut done the week before your wedding, as this allows the hair to

The Night Before: Wash & Condition Hopefully, you have been using a good quality shampoo for a while, so the night before the wedding wash your hair massaging your scalp gently with your fingertips. To avoid limp hair and greasy roots, don't overload with conditioner, just apply to mid- lengths and ends.

On The Day: Style Bridal hair can take an hour or two, depending on hair and the chosen style. Once the bride’s hair is in rollers, the make-up can be applied and the hairdresser can work on the bridesmaids’ hair. After that, take a deep breath and enjoy your special day! Chickpea fattet,

iced salad, cumin and fennel seed yoghurt We’ve had a run of desserts in this series of recipes so it is time to redress the balance with this brilliant vegetarian dish. A fattet is a Lebanese spiced stew, made up of complex sweet flavours and spices. It’s a really wonderful dish, which will satisfy vegetarians and meat eaters alike. This version was created by Alfie Smith, a very talented young head chef at the Rump & Wade in Stevenage. He finishes off the stew with a very contrasting crispy iced salad.

This dish may look like a winter warmer but it is surprisingly refreshing and satisfying even in the hotter months.

Serves 2-3

Ingredients

Chickpea Fattet: 400g chickpeas in water, drained & washed 1 spanish onion, finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 5g Fresh mint, finely sliced 1 cinnamon stick 1/2 tsp chilli flakes 1/2 tsp ground mixed spice 1tbsp pomegranate molasses 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml water 10ml vegetable oil Iced Salad: 1 khol-rabi, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, thinly sliced 1/2 small white cabbage, thinly sliced 5g corriander Cumin yoghurt: 100g Greek yoghurt 15g ground cumin 1 lemon juiced 5g fennel seeds

How To Make 1. Take a medium heavy based sauce pan and place it on a

medium heat. Put the cinnamon stick, chili flakes and mixed spice into the pan.

2. Dry roast the spices on the medium heat for 2-3 minutes. 3. Add 10ml of vegetable oil, onions and garlic. Sweat for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Now add the chickpeas, chopped tomato, stock cube, pomegranate molasses and water. Leave to simmer down for 40-45minutes stirring frequently.

Take thinly sliced, kohlrabi, cabbage and red pepper and place in iced water (you want about 1/3 ice to 2/3 water).

Pick the leaves from the coriander and add them to the ice water

7. Leave for 5-10minutes to crisp up in the iced water. 8. In a dry frying pan roast off the cumin for 2-3minutes take off the heat and squeeze the juice of one lemon. Add cumin and lemon paste to the yoghurt and the fennel. Serve the fattet with the iced vegetables and the yoghurt. You can also serve it with couscous or bulgur wheat too.

September is an ideal time for a great garden tidy-up, while itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still warm enough to work outdoors comfortably before the inevitable freezing weather sets in. If you've returned from holiday to withered summer bedding and dried-up pots, bite the bullet and empty them on the compost heap, replacing them with a spring display. Plant bulbs, pansies, heathers and other winter and spring stalwarts to brighten up your outlook. If you're not going to use your containers for winter displays, clean them out, wipe them down and put them away. Don't leave terracotta pots out or they may succumb to frost and crack. Some gardeners tend to be more relaxed about pest and disease control at the end of the season, but ignore them at your peril or you may be storing up problems that will remain dormant until next year. Cut off or prune out affected parts of diseased plants and burn or dispose of them so that overwintering spores won't survive until next year. Pest control is also important. Be aware that many biological controls become less reliable when the temperature drops as the predatory insects which provide the control then multiply more slowly. Take off shoots on plants which are infested with greenfly or blackfly and dispose of them.

Don't leave garden debris lying around because slugs will shelter under it and are still capable of doing plenty of damage to your plants. It's also important to keep up with the weeding because otherwise they are likely to shed seeds, creating a hotbed of more weeds next year. Continue to deadhead roses and cut back finished summerflowering perennials, removing supports which propped up the plants which have stopped flowering. These can be cleaned with a mild detergent and put away until next year. The vegetable garden should still be producing rich pickings of French and runner beans, salad crops, courgettes and sweetcorn, but if you have time, clear away spent crops to create vacant rows, dig over the ground and refill the spare space with autumn and winter crops as soon as possible. Give the greenhouse a springclean, emptying it of staging, plants and rubbish and give it a good clean with hot, soapy water, which will help flush out pests and diseases and prepare the area for any overwintering tender plants you may need to house. Remove greenhouse shading to allow in more light.

If you're putting plants back in there, try to space them out to allow good airflow around them which will help stop the build-up of diseases such as soft rot and mildew. Garden furniture can also be cleaned at this time of year on fine days, to save you a job next spring. Teak furniture can be washed with a mild mixture of soap and water and it is recommended that you use a soft utility brush to remove surface dust and dirt. Rinse the furniture thoroughly after cleaning and allow it to dry completely before putting it away for the winter. September is also a good time to prune cane fruits such as loganberries and tayberries, cutting off the fruited canes to about 6in (15cm) from the ground. Of course, once you've done all this, the sun may come out and you may have to unpack a newly cleaned deck chair or two if the summer turns out to be an Indian one - but you'll be streets ahead when spring arrives.

Penstemon

Penstemons are one of the most valuable late summer-flowering perennials and, in all but the coldest regions, are easy and reliable, flowering from summer to mid-autumn. Their elegant spires of foxglove-like flowers are available in a range of gorgeous warm reds, pinks, purples, blues and whites and they fit into all styles of mixed border among dwarf shrubs, complementing grey foliage plants and roses.

Penstemons have a reputation for being tender, but in fact winter losses are usually due to wet weather. They need full sun and well drained soil. If you live in an area with heavy rainfall, cover the crown of the plants with a cloche over winter. On poor soils, add extra nutrients by watering with a high-potash liquid feed in June and again at the beginning of August, but don’t feed beyond the end of August. Plants should be cut back in late March to 12cm (5in) from ground level to keep the plants bushy and prevent flopping. Good varieties include P. ‘Alice Hindley’, which grows to 90cm (3ft) and produces large, pale-mauve, white-throated blooms, P. ‘Osprey’, a pink and white variety which looks great in the cottage garden, and P. ‘Raven’, with its rich purple blooms and white throat.

Good Enough to Eat! Herbs

Keep herbs going through autumn & winter If you’re worried about missing the flavours of all those home-grown herbs which you used throughout the summer, there are easy ways to keep stocked through the winter without going to the supermarket. Sow a flowerpot full of basil seed, keeping it on a warm, sunny windowsill until the seedlings appear. Pick the leaves regularly to add to Italian dishes and sow some more in a few weeks’ time to keep the supply up. If you’ve grown mint or parsley outdoors in summer, cut off a clump of it, complete with roots, and plant into a container of compost and keep it on a sunny windowsill to keep the plant going. Alternatively sow a pot or half-tray of parsley seeds every three months and the plants will keep growing all year round. Evergreens such as rosemary and thyme will keep going through the winter months, so just snip a bit off when you need it.

The Origins Of

English Place Names Most, but not all, place names in the south of England or the Midlands go back well over a thousand years to the language of the Saxons, Old English (OE). But in the north of the country, linguistic origins are often Old Norse (ON) and reflect the Viking (ie Danish and Norwegian) occupancy of those parts. It’s said that “history is written by the victor” but so were place names; and the victorious Romans “romanised” the original celtic names. These Roman names, in their turn, were changed into Saxon following the Roman withdrawal; and where and when the Vikings eventually defeated the Saxons, sometimes these names were later changed into a Scandinavian equivalent. But this didn’t always happen; frequently the Saxon name stayed on - perhaps it depended upon the “strength” of the Viking suppression in that particular locality. But for some time before the Normans, England was divided between Saxon and Viking areas by a boundary which ran along the middle of the Thames estuary until it reached the mouth of the river Lea; then it followed the Lea to its source at Leagrave; it then ran in a straight line (roughly along the present A6) to Bedford; then westwards along the river Ouse to its junction with the Watling Street; and finally along the Watling Street to Chester. To the north and east of this boundary lay the “Danelaw” (ie Danish land) whilst to the south and east lay the Saxon lands of Mercia, Kent, and Wessex. It means that Bedfordshire was effectively cut in half and where Dunstable is today was just in Mercia. Much of eastern Beds was strictly in Danelaw - but place names rarely reflect this change and have remained largely Saxon. Interestingly, it’s suggested that some names in the country pre-date even the Celts and could have been given by our very early Neolithic forebears. In particular, the names of some rivers and prominent landmarks such as the rivers Lea, Ouse, Thames and the hill called the Wrekin. An amusing confusion arises over the name of the river Avon. The Welsh (ie celtic) name for river is afon (where the f is pronounced as a v). So River Avon is really River River! To illustrate a name change throughout successive occupiers, let us take present day Dunstable as an example. Perhaps - just perhaps (it’s highly conjectural) - the original celtic name for this spot was Dwrycoedbrefi (pronounced door, eh, koid, brevvy) which might have meant “lovely water in the wood”. This “lovely water” could have referred to the springs at Well Head since there is a further

suggestion that the original track crossing the Icknield Way from the south came straight over the top of Dunstable Downs, along Green Lane, past Maiden Bower before continuing northwards. This picture would place the original crossroads at the top of West Street and from here, it would have been a short walk for the women to fetch this “lovely water” from Well Head (which would have been a very powerful spring at that time). NB fetching water was women’s work in those days! The succeeding Romans, unfamiliar with celtic names (aren’t we all?!) tried their best to copy this name and where their Watling Street crossed the Icknield Way - the present day Dunstable crossroads - they named their army staging post Durocobrivis (door, oc, ko, breavis). Not a bad try you must admit! After the Romans left in AD410, the incoming Saxons didn’t bother with the place at all and chose not to live at the crossroads such that Durocobrivis became increasingly neglected. Then, in AD971, it was completely destroyed by marauding Vikings so that when the Normans arrived, nothing remained apart from a deserted crossroads and a few ruins. Consequently this place was never recorded in the Domesday Book (DB) in 1086; and only when Henry 1st started the town from scratch in the early 110os was it given a new name. That name was Dunestaple (dewner staple) - and argument rages over what that name actually means. Some say it’s coined from two Saxon words namely “Dune” meaning “hill” and “Stapol” meaning a stake driven into the ground demarcating a market. Hence Dunestaple could have meant “the market in the hills”.

Alternatively, it’s suggested that the name follows the old Saxon practice of naming something relating to a particular person; such as the “stapol” or “boundary post” marking the land of a former Saxon chief called Duna. So Dunestaple could mean “the post marking the boundary of Duna’s land”. Your guess is as good as anybody else’s over this - but please forget anything you might have heard about the fictitious Dun the Robber having given his name to the town. It’s a local myth! Over the following centuries there were further slight changes so the history of Dunstable’s name has gone from Dwrycoedbrefi to Durocobrivis to Dunestaple to Dunstaple to Dunstable. Many other towns around the country will have similar histories to their name. Looking over local place names, one finds the same subsets cropping up time and again. For example “ton”, “ham”, “ing”, “ley”, “ea”, “hoe”, “bury”, “strat”, “dun”, “fen”. Often these parts are joined together with the name of the original Saxon owner or chief as a prefix. It’s noticeable that many of the old subsets found are still recognisable today regarding their meaning, eg “ford”, “field”, “mill”, “well”. But for other interpretations, it’s necessary to go back to the original Saxon spelling (if possible) because, even with the Domesday Book, a slight change in the spelling might already have been made by then. Remember that names were not written down; they were passed on verbally - and mistakes could very easily be made (or misheard). For example “ton” could originally have been “dun”. Such similarities easily cause confusion since “ton” means “farmstead” or “enclosure” whereas “dun” means “mound” or “hill” - very different. The subset “ing” means “the place belonging to” so at first glance Toddington might be thought to mean “the farmstead belonging to a man called Todd”. But in the DB (1086) the name of the village is given as Todingadone and instead of “ton” there was originally a version of “dun”. So the name should really translate to “the hill belonging to Tuda’s people”. Similarly, Caddington means “the hill belonging to Cada’s people”. There are many similar names eg Cardington, Harlington, Eggington, and Shillington. But notice how the names translate backwards eg done, inga, Tod which gives “hill, belonging, Tuda”. “ham” is basically our word “home” and Studham means “ the homestead where horses are kept”. And we still have the word “stud” relating to horses. “ley” means “a pasture resulting from clearance” so Stopsley refers to “the woodland clearing of a man called Stoppa”. There are many places ending in ley, or lea, or leah - they all refer to a clearing. My home is in Brierley Close whose first part could mean “a pasture resulting from the clearance of brambles (ie briars)”. “ea”, “ey” or “ei” has something to do with water - either a

stream or an island. So Eaton (Bray) - Eiton in DB - means “the farmstead surrounded by streams” (Bray later refers to the 15th century Lord of the Manor). “stan” means “stone” or “rock” so Stanford (near Biggleswade) means “the stony crossing of the river” (the river Flitt) and Stanbridge is “stone bridge”. “strat” refers to a Roman, paved, road so Stratton (also near Biggleswade) means “the farmstead on the Roman road” (ie the Ermine Street) whereas Fenny Stratford means “the marshy river crossing on the Roman road” (ie the Watling Street). “hoe” is found everywhere and basically means “projecting hill spur” usually describing a sudden drop from a fairly level surface - and such spots were good lookout points for surveying the surrounding countryside. For example Totternhoe (Totenhou in DB) translates to “hill spur with lookout house” ; Ivinghoe (Evinghehou) means “hill spur belonging to Ifa’s people” ; Sharpenhoe simply means “steep hill spur”. The suffix “bury” (or “burh” or “burgh”) is basically a fortified place and is the origin of our word “borough”. The village of Soulbury (near Leighton Buzzard) means “stronghold by a gully” ; Limbury (part of Luton but originally Lygeanburg in OE) means “stronghold on the river Lea” whilst Dunstable’s Kingsbury (Cyningburh as in Henry 1st’s original palace) means “the king’s fortified manor”. Some of the most common subsets found in names are such as norton, eaton, sutton and wetton (or their variants). These, of course, refer to the farm (or enclosure) to the north, the east, the south and the west. Any name ending in castor or cester signifies a Roman fortification - usually an important place in Roman times. Locally we have Towcester but the daddy of them all is Chester. swin means something to do with pigs (ie swine) eg Swindon ; pir means pears eg Pirton ; bar means barley eg Barton (“in the clay” came later) ; chipping signifies a market eg Chipping Norton (“market enclosure to the north”) ; shef means sheep eg Shefford (“river crossing for sheep”) ; leic refers to leaks and Leighton (the Busard is a later family name - nothing to do with the bird) implies that leaks were grown there. Tingrith has the ON roots of “ting” and “rith” and means “assembly by the stream” (note that the Icelandic parliamentary assembly is still called the Althing). Apart from these comparatively few examples, there are scores of others with unexpected and unique meanings ; and the study of English place names is never ending. There are so many OE words used as descriptors (many of which are still found today in slightly modified form) but trying to learn Old English is absolutely crucifying since its syntax and grammar are so very different to present day English. But it keeps the grey matter ticking over!

Best looking SUV around? No contest really – it has to be the Range Rover Evoque. It’s been a bit of a head turner since launch a few years back, and the enhancements on the latest versions just add to the package. The end result is a classy looking machine that has proved to be the entry into Range Rover ownership for many, not that joining the club comes cheaply. The HSE Dynamic model here sits in the pages of the brochure at £43,200 but it’s not put people off. Sales have been and still are good, the only down side being that you’re not guaranteed any degree of exclusivity in buying one. They’re about as common as a red or blue football shirt on Merseyside, where the workforce was boosted to meet the demand. In profile it might look as if someone big and heavy has sat on the rear of the roof but it’s rightly become one of the biggest selling products in the Jaguar/Land Rover line-up. beltline gives it an aggressive, almost-coupe like appearance but it’s unmistakably a Range Rover. The wisdom is that 90 per cent of Evoque buyers will be new to the brand, younger and decidedly more female that the traditional customer base. Probably blonde So they’re probably going to be more worried about the height of kerb it’ll negotiate in Kensington or outside the school gates than its ability off the beaten track.

They don’t tend to shout so much about what it can do off road these days, but it can and it will. I know because the original launch was up and down some hilly braes in southern Scotland, where it ably displayed its credentials. When the going got tough, the Evoque kept going – as you’d expect from a car steeped with the Land Rover heritage.

Looking Up! Shooting Stars to Light Up August Skies: 11th - 13th August this year sees the maximum of the Perseids Meteor Shower. Forecasters are predicting rates of between 50 - 70 shooting stars per hour from 10pm until 4am on each of these nights. Look for fast-moving bright streaks of light shooting across the sky. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll appear to radiate from near the giant â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Wâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; constellation of Cassiopeia high up in the north-east on August evenings. See a Partial Solar Eclipse at Sunset: Sunset on Monday 21st August this year is rather special. A small chunk of the sun will be hidden as our moon slides in front of its lower limb, producing a partial solar eclipse. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need solar eclipse glasses and a clear horizon to your west for the best view. Dunstable Downs is an ideal viewing spot. The eclipse begins at 7:42pm with the sun just above the horizon. As the sun drops lower so the chunk of missing sun grows bigger. Sunset is at 8:12pm. Venus Shines Bright as our Morning Star: Early risers are in for a treat this August and September. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re awake as dawn breaks look towards your east for a very bright â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;starâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hovering low over the eastern horizon. Adventurous campers can pitch their tents at the UK’s largest zoo this summer Nature Night Camping – Saturday 5th, 12th and 19th August and Saturday 2nd September, 2017 Lovers of the great outdoors can pitch up their tents and sleep under the stars at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo this summer with a brand new wild camping experience. Running on selected dates during August and September, Nature Night Camping invites visitors to sleepover at the UK’s largest Zoo alongside its 3,500 animals. Once the Zoo gates have shut for the day, lucky campers will pitch their tents and be treated to a fascinating talk on how best to spot the Zoo’s animals at night-time. As darkness falls on the 600-acre Zoo, campers will have a chance to put their newly-learned wildlife-watching tips to the test and head out for a torch-lit expedition to discover which animals are still awake. Guests will then return to camp to settle down for a peaceful night’s sleep. With no need to set an alarm, the roars of lions, squawks of parrots and trumpeting of elephants will ring around at first light. Breakfast will be served at the Zoo’s Wildbite Café before campers enjoy an exclusive morning tour of Whipsnade before the Zoo opens to the public. Overnight guests are then free to enjoy the rest of their day at the Zoo, as entry is included in the camping price. LIPREADING CLASSES IN DUNSTABLE Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem? Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they use all the advances in modern technology, but even the best aids don’t cure hearing loss. It is still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost. Research has shown that joining a lipreading class helps to avoid the damaging social isolation that can accompany hearing loss. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes help your ears fill in the things you miss. They are small friendly classes, and as well as learning lipreading we cover, how hearing works and the things that can go wrong, equipment and organisations that can help, strategies to cope in various situations, and much more, oh, and we laugh a lot! My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, and so I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. I teach in Beds. Bucks and Herts, and there is now a class in Dunstable on a Wednesday afternoon.
