Friday 15th & Saturday 16th June The Church On The Hill, Edlesborough. LU6 2EP

Local Music Festival To Feature Award-Winning Line-Up It’s always good to see local events gather momentum and this summer, local music festival EdleFest is set for its strongest line-up yet.

The FlowerFest As part of Edlefest, budding and experienced flower arrangers being invited to join in a free workshop guided, once again, by Phrena Wilkinson. Volunteers will meet at the Church On The Hill in Edlesborough on Friday 15th June at 11.00 a.m. The aim is to fill the church with the fragrance and beauty of the freshly arranged blooms, visually enhancing the magnificent building for visitors to enjoy for the entire festival weekend. You are welcome to take your arrangement home after the festival, or leave to be sold. The mechanics and foliage will be provided, all that is askes is that you to bring a few flowers from the garden, secateurs/scissors and enthusiasm. There will be free refreshments for all! Please pre-book by calling Chris Yates: 01525 220739 or email: chris@brooklyns.org.uk

As usual there will be something for everyone’s tastes with traditional folk fiddle tunes from the young and talented Starlight Barking - winners at last year’s Towersey Festival, some beautiful harmonies from Vick and Mick and virtuosic cello from Emily Noithip. Not to mention The Dicemen, providing a new take on some rock favourites with a line-up that includes banjo and mandolin! But it’s the opportunity to catch this year’s headline acts that makes this year’s festival so special. Friday June 15th is headlined by the king of contemporary English singer-songwriters Chris Wood, winner of five BBC Radio 2 folk awards. His most recent album ‘So Much to Defend’ has received wide critical acclaim and was given 4 Stars by THE GUARDIAN. Then on Saturday one of the best live acts on today’s circuit makes a rare visit to the area - Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra. The Tea Pad sound draws on myriad influences – from Django Reinhardt to Cab Calloway – yet ultimately sounds like nobody else, with a swing style that’s utterly their own, witnessed across their three wonderful albums – 2012’s Money Isn’t Everything, 2014’s Talk About The Weather and now the new Something Blue. They’ve already blown away audiences at Glastonbury, Wilderness and Towersey, as well as appearing twice on Radio 4’s Loose Ends – and if you’re lucky enough to be at this year’s EdleFest, I’m pretty sure they will blow you away too! And just to add to the atmosphere, the festival is held in a beautiful old medieval church, set on the hill above the village of Edlesborough just minutes from Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable and Tring. Now owned by the Churches Conservation Trust, it provides a spectacular venue for two very special evenings of music accompanied by a glass of Pimms or real ale. You can find out more about the whole event by searching online for EdleFest, or at the festival website edlefest.site123.me, call 01525 221744, or by email edlefest@gmail.com

Revitalising Dunstable Giving you your High Street back has been a focus of Central Bedfordshire Council for some time, but I’m only too aware that actions often speak louder than words. So, I’m glad to say there has been plenty of activity since my last column. I'm sure you will have noticed enhancements to a number of Dunstable shops and businesses due to our High Street Improvement Scheme. This offered owners and landlords of high street shops and businesses grants for up to 60 per cent towards the total cost of improvement works on shop fronts or vacant units. And, at a time when very few local authorities nationwide are investing in town centres, we're actively working to revitalise and rejuvenate the hearts of our communities. The Saracen’s Head, Lombardo’s, Caffe Latte, Allframe and the neighbouring vacant unit will all benefit from this scheme. Depending on when you read this, you’ll notice these premises either in the process of change and being newly transformed. The Saracen’s Head is the town's oldest surviving inn, and some of

8

it dates back to the 16th century. So the improvements will help breathe new life into a genuine piece of our town’s history. Speaking of history, a few weeks ago a new arch and gates at the entrance to Priory Gardens were formally opened by the Town Mayor, Councillor Gloria Martin, and myself.

The design of the arch overthrow mirrors the shape of the windows of the adjacent Grade II* listed Priory House building. The original gates could not be entirely saved as they were badly

www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

corroded. However, new gate frames were made and much of the original scroll work detail was saved and reinserted into the new frames. The money for these gates was co-funded by the town council and Central Bedfordshire Council as part of an allocated £1.25million from our Market Town Regeneration Fund. This was the fifth project completed by Dunstable Town Council using our funding: Last year we joint funded the new splash play park, and we’ve also helped fund the Town Ranger street cleansing machines. And there will be more changes to come this year. In recognition of the impact of heavy traffic has had on the town from the former A5 road, Highways England is providing £1.5million of funding for Dunstable town centre. This will allow us to start making much needed enhancements to the High Street area. In the short term, we will use the money to remove railings and other unnecessary clutter from the High Street. We will also mark the entrances to the town

centre with four new gateway features; we’ll upgrade street lights; improve Middle Row, Market Square, Queensway; and provide new street furniture. These changes are likely to take place towards the end of this year, and will all encourage visitors and shoppers and to make the area more attractive. We will continue to bid for more funding so we can undertake further improvements. Once complete, the changes will speak volumes about how Dunstable is changing for the better. That first wave of money comes as part of the A5-M1 and Woodside link roads project, which allowed us to re-route heavy traffic away from the High Street, and to start making the town centre

a more attractive and more peaceful place to visit. To do so, we introduced HGV weight limit restrictions. I have

Bio-orchestra Art Project Science project brings the sound of music to Luton Hoo Walled Garden The Luton Hoo Estate Walled Garden was voted, by public vote, as being one of five important and cultural significance locations in Luton chosen to observe the bio structures of plants. This fascinating and innovative science project turns data into music by observing and recording the movement of plants. Heading the project is Gayle Storey, born in Luton, a visual artist currently working in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire, Luton Music Mix and the Royal College of Music. She has been awarded funding from the Arts Council England for this project with is founded upon Darwin's Research into Movement of Plants. This interdisciplinary project combines science, art and music. Readings will be taken within the historic Walled Garden and will take just one day to complete in April. The data is then transposed by a composer from the Royal College of Music who will then be part of a team that will rehearsed and performed with students

The Carpenters Arms After months of speculation in the local area, local man Kabby Kholo-Kholo and his beautiful wife Leane are pleased to announce they’ll be re-opening The Carpenters Arms; putting this beautiful, traditional old pub and eatery right back into the heart of the ancient village of Slapton. Kabby grew up in Tring and got the cooking bug whilst doing an apprenticeship at a local pub. He was inspired to train under the eagle eye of Raymond Blanc, where In the fabulous vegetable gardens of Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in Oxfordshire, he learned how fresh seasonal produce can impact the quality of the dishes served at table. He also saw how Monsieur collaborated with his suppliers; procuring the excellent and the unusual to bring his superb menus to life. Taking these lessons to heart he has built a successful 5 star career. More recently he spent 3 years managing the Crown in Stony Stratford, but he has been tempted back to the area where he grew up and to the Carpenters Arms, with a desire to bring his passion for food to Slapton and the surrounding communities. Kabby feels honoured to have the opportunity to put this beautiful old pub right back into the heart of the village of Slapton. There has been a community in this area since

the Domesday Book, and in a crazy world, where life spins ever faster, his aim is to offer a warm welcome, a comfortable refuge, amazing food and service with a smile. Someone once said, "You don't need a silver fork to eat good food.", and Kabby uses this principal to develop his weekly menus. He’s aiming to partner with the best local suppliers and use top quality ingredients to deliver tasty traditional dishes, family favourites, innovative seasonal specials – all with his own special touch. He believes this is a recipe for happiness! Kabby spent his early life in Lesotho, South Africa but went to school in Tring, Hertfordshire. He is proud the belongs to a truly global family. He lives with his beautiful wife Leanne and their lovely children in Leighton Buzzard, but often pops over the pond to see his sister and cousins in Portland Oregon USA. He also continues to maintain strong ties with his ancestral family still living in Lesotho. He is currently fundraising to build a church for the community there.

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Are You Eligible For A

REFUND

@martinslewis

Refund, refund, refund, (refund, refund). No I’m not stuck on repeat, I’m trying to hammer home that people are owed hundreds of millions of pounds that they’re just not claiming – most of which can be done with just a quick click or phone call. Here’s what you need to do...

Over 1million are owed a refund on Power of Attorney registration fees

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you, while you still have the mental capacity to do so, to nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your affairs if you lose capacity. And they’re not just for the elderly, I have one, I’m 45. For more on how to do it cheaply go to www.mse.me/poa. Yet if you’ve already got one, and did it between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 in England and Wales, you paid £110, which is more than it should’ve been, so if you did that you’re owed up to £54 per Power of Attorney (which includes 0.5% interest).

marriage (and civil partnerships) tax allowance. It applies where one is a basic-rate taxpayer and the other a non-taxpayer. The non-taxpayer can apply to have 10% (£1,190) of their tax-free allowance shifted to the taxpayer. This means £1,190 of income they were taxed on at 20% is now tax-free – a £238 gain this year done via altering your tax code. Yet still over 1 million eligible couples are missing out. And you can back claim a refund to when it started too, so that’s a cheque for £662 – making a total of £900. It takes five minutes to do at www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance/how-to-apply – it’s the non-taxpayer who must apply.

As Michelle who tweeted: “@MartinSLewis just applied for the marTo claim a refund go to www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund or call the Office of the Public Guardian’s riage tax allowance and it took 2 mins to get over £600. #thankyou.” on 0300 456 0300 and select option six. You’ll need details (including bank details) of the person who it was set up for and the name of one of the attorneys. Reclaim overpaid energy With winter long gone this is the perfect time for those who pay energy by monthly direct debit, which I’m swamped with people telling me how easy it is, like Barbara who tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis Thanks is the vast majority, to check if you’ve got too much credit. This is because energy firms estimate your to you, I have £75.42 back. How else would I have usage, and then bill you based on their estimates. If known about this?” those are set too high you can end up overpaying.

Are you married? If so, you may be due a free £900

date go online or call up to check whether you are in credit and if so how much. Direct debits are meant to smooth out your usage over the year so normally you’re in surplus going into winter and in deficit after. So right now if your credit is more than a month’s worth of bills, ask them for the amount over that back – it can be £100s, and ask them to lower the direct debit going forward. If you’ve switched providers you should’ve been credited with any excess then, yet they didn’t used to, so check now even if it was years ago, as Aston emailed: “Eight minutes work calling my old energy suppliers, got £140 refunded after leaving in credit. Why don’t more people do this?”

Graduated uni? You may be due £100s back

In the last three years alone, over 100,000 university leavers started to repay their loans too early, and are due some of it back. Plus as this could go all the way back to 1998 it’s likely there are 100,000s more. You are only eligible to start repaying your student loan in the April after graduation – often around nine months after leaving, and even then only if you earn over a set threshold. However, if your employer has the wrong info about your uni leaving date, or simply does it wrong you may start repaying early. To check and get it back is easy. Just call the Student Loan Company on 0300 100 0611 and ask it.

It takes five minutes and I’ve had tons of successes like Tom who tweeted: “Thank you @MartinSLewis 5 minute phone call to Student Loans Company and got £315 back from paying too early in 2009”. And that’s only one category of student loan overpayment, there are other reasons to, to check see my full www.mse.me/studentloanoverpayments guide.

Get a tax rebate if you wear a uniform If you wear a recognisable uniform to work, even if it’s just a branded t-shirt, and you wash it yourself, you may be able to reclaim hundreds of pounds of tax back, like Jackie who tweeted: “@MartinSLewis we got a £250 cheque today after writing to the HMRC about a uniform tax rebate for my husband! Thank you!” The amount you get varies from £12 to £74 a year depending on your tax rate and the industry you work in, plus you can go back four years in total, so this can be £100s for some. And you don’t need to pay anyone to do this, just fill out the P87 claim form at www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-income-tax-relief-foryour-employment-expenses-p87. Once you’ve registered, your tax code will change, so you’ll be taxed less in the future. Full help at www.mse.me/uniform. Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert.com. Lisbon

Population: Over 550,000 within the administrative limits of the city and approximately 3 million in the wider Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Portugal’s capital is the country’s largest city and among the oldest cities worldwide - it is older than London, Paris or Rome. Located in the Sintra Mountains, Lisbon is sometimes referred to as the city of the seven hills. The streets are cobbled in most places, so make sure to pack a pair of walking boots or comfortable trainers, as well as a small backpack. As with other coastal destinations, a lightweight jacket against the odd bout of rain or wind will come handy too. A beautiful and exciting destination for a city break, Lisbon offers a Mediterranean climate together with a coastline of beaches. Due to the Atlantic Ocean the water is somewhat colder even during the summer season (June to September), however, Lisbon is an an ideal escape from the rainy British weather. The temperatures outside the main season are warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt, but remember to take some sun factor - it is quite easy to burn just enjoying a meal and a drink sitting outside, even in March. Transport Sightseeing tour buses are a great introduction to the city, which you can then explore at your own pace. Among the most notable historical sights to visit are The Castle of Sao Jorge, Lisbon Cathedral and Belem Tower. Taxis are very reasonably priced, but the public transport is so inexpensive that if you have the time (and the leg power), then this is the best way to explore the city and

26 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

its treasures. The trains and the Lisbon Metro have an excellent travel card system that’s easy to use, and English is spoken quite widely, including at the ticket office. Architecture Strolling around the streets of Lisbon you will instantly notice townhouses covered on the outside, top to bottom, in elaborately designed tiles called Azulejos. Another beautiful feature to admire is the wrought iron balconies in many elaborate designs. Lisbon’s architecture is well known for the Pombaline architectural style, named after Prime Minister de Carvalho e Melo, the 1st Marquess of Pombal. When a massive earthquake devastated 85% of the city in 1755 and many thousands of residents lost their lives, Lisbon was rebuilt under Pombal’s direction using methods of construction designed to ‘shake but not fall’ in an earthquake. The Pombaline style uses flexible wooden structures implanted on the walls, floors and roofs, which are then covered with prefabricated building materials to help withstand earthquakes. As many buildings in Lisbon are currently being renovated, you are likely to get a glimpse of the unique Pombaline construction. In addition to The Marquess of Pombal Square featuring a monument of the Marquess on a horse, Lisbon has two other notable squares; the Praca do Rossio, a busy area with lots of lovely cafes, restaurants and theatres that serves as an important hub of transport; and the Praca do Comercio with its impressive triumphal arch and monument to King Joseph I. A number of cafes and restaurants line the square where you can a leisurely meal or a drink while admiring the view of the river Tagus.

Travel Lisbon Beaches Lisbon has a string of beaches along the coastline, where you can delight in the views, history and sightseeing, but also sample traditional Portuguese food, fine wine and exquisite local treats. Highly Recommended: Bay of Cascais This coastal town, a former fishing village 19 miles from Lisbon (about 30 minutes by train) is a popular destination for tourists both from Portugal and abroad. It offers a collection of art galleries and museums, quirky local shops and a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars with stunning views of the sea. Designer Shopping Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon’s answer to New York’s Fifth Avenue. Designed on the Parisian boulevards, you will find many haute couture boutiques here from Gucci and Guess to Prada and Cartier, together with elegant hotels and restaurants. Lisbon’s best rooftop bar Sky Bar is also situated here at the top floor of the Tivoli Hotel at Avenida da Liberdade. Simply the most stunning views of the city, well worth a visit! Food and Drink Lisbon is home to a number of restaurants owned by a renowned chef Olivier da Costa, and steak lovers will love the elegant steak house called K.O.B. (Knowledge Of Beef). At the less pricey end of the spectrum is the Time Out Market with its excellent variety of food choices from salted cod to pizza, at very reasonable prices. The market also sells fresh fruit and vegetables. Traditional Portuguese food includes Bacalhau, a versatile dish made with shredded cod, potato and onion topped with olives and fresh parsley. Among other favourites are sardines, which you will also find in tinned version in many shops. There is also Caldo Verde green soup with slices of pork sausage, and ‘chocolate salami’ - a sausage shaped sweet sold in many shops and supermarkets. Famous Football Stadiums Lisbon has strong roots in sport, having hosted many international and world championships in a variety of sports. Football fans can visit Sporting’s Estadio Jose Alvalade, and Benfica’s Stadium of Light - you will see its red arches from the plane as you approach the Lisbon Airport. Lisbon is a beautiful and exciting holiday destination, whatever the purpose of your visit might be. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend, a break from work, or a shopping trip, you’ll find plenty to explore in this vibrant city. Should you wish to spend a week or two here, you can immerse yourself in the city’s rich culture, learn about its history and visit the sights, but also watch the world go by while enjoying the Portuguese al fresco lifestyle for a large part of the year.

SKODA KAROQ flap, the removable rechargeable torch in the boot, and pop up tables on the backs of the front seats which can be locked at 45 degrees and are thus ideal of youngsters to rest their ipads on.

There are four trim levels to pick from – SE, SE Technology, SE L and Edition, whereas SEAT offer five for Ateca. So, very similar, but a few differences show up out on the road, where the Karoq offers up a slightly softer and more family friendly ride alongside comparable performance, though the engine has a slightly rougher and more audible edge to it when pressing on. Body roll is kept well under control which helps add to the overall refinement experience. It comes with Drive Mode Select which alters the powertrain and steering response between Eco, Normal and Sport, and in 1.5 litre guise the engine has cylinder deactivation technology which should help with the fuel bill – the combined figure is quoted at 51.4mpg with a CO2 figure of 125g/km. Most models in the range are two wheel drive, but you can have a four wheel drive system with the 2.0 diesel engine.

Karoq is a replacement for the highly popular Yeti in Skoda’s range, and should appeal to a wider range of customers, not least because it brims with up to date technology.

There are similarities too inside but the Skoda racks up envy points with its smart eight inch piano black touchscreen that integrates all the buttons, where the Ateca has actual buttons down either side. Otherwise it’s a win for the Ateca, which has a classier look, though you might think different of course. You’ll find lots of neat Skoda touches, like the ice scraper in the fuel filler

32 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

SE L trim sampled here comes with Alcantara upholstery, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats18 inch alloys, automatic headlight control and the adjustable Varioflex rear seats for a bit more practicality. And if the 1.5 is not swift enough for you and you don’t mind waiting, there are rumours of a vRS version in the future. FOR: Manageable running costs, solid residuals AGAINST: Badge snobbery in a crowded marketplace

In Theen Gard

Be Water Wise This Summer

I'm sure many of us basked in the glorious spring sunshine earlier this year, but beds, borders and pots were drying up before our eyes. We all need to do our bit to save what water we do have. The Environment Agency advises householders not to let water run to waste while waiting for the water to get hot. Collect it and use it to

water your plants. Similarly, collect the running water in your shower before getting in. Use water-retaining crystals when planting up container plants and invest in a water butt which you can put under a drainpipe or other suitable gully and re-use the water in your garden.

The Royal Horticultural society has these 10 tips to help save water this summer 1

Use waste water from washing-up or rinsing vegetables for watering, as normal amounts of household soaps and detergents will not harm soil or plants.

2 Let your lawns go brown. They will

recover when the rains return. Newly sown and turfed lawns will require a lot of watering to be successful, so leave sowing or turfing until the autumn. Lawn seed companies are breeding deeper rooted grasses that hopefully will stay green for longer.

3 Vegetables need moist soils to give their best. Water them at key growth stages. The response to water is especially marked when sweetcorn, peas and beans begin to flower, when the edible part of lettuces begins to form and when potatoes show flower buds, which initiate plenty of tubers. Most herbs are robust and better flavoured for a little drought. Digging in organic matter in winter can enable soils to hold enough water for crops to keep going for a month with no rain. 4 Mature trees, shrubs and climbers,

hedges, fruit trees and bushes will not need watering during a drought. However, newly planted trees, shrubs

and climbers are extremely vulnerable and it is difficult to ensure the water applied at the surface works its way down to the roots. Don't leave hoses running all night - the water will either saturate the roots and possibly kill them or it will drain deeply below the root zone. Water should always be applied over the surface so it soaks the rootball and surrounding soil.

8 Don't dig new ground in summer if

5 Fruit may remain small if not

9 Establishing new plants in borders during dry times can be difficult. Instead, pot them into slightly bigger pots and keep well watered and fed in light shade until the autumn planting season arrives.

watered, but it should be sweet and well coloured. Cane fruit and strawberries will benefit by keeping the soil moist every two weeks. In future adding mulches in winter will help improve the soil and retain more moisture.

6 In sunny summers install greenhouse and conservatory shading and ventilation to limit overheating and invest in a min-max thermometer.

7 By grouping pots, ideally in clusters of similar size, watering is made easier and moisture loss reduced. Mass pots for mutual shading and use the largest pots possible. As days lengthen and the sun rises, more plants, especially large-leaved ones, can be gathered in shadier areas. A saucer beneath the pot to retain run-off helps.

36 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

you can avoid it, as digging soil allows any remaining moisture to escape. Hoe off weeds as shallowly as you can, loosen soil with a fork and 'puddle' plants into the soil, adding a little liquid fertiliser. Adding nutrients helps plants make the best use of what moisture there is by encouraging extensive root growth.

10 Early summer perennials, irises for example, will survive on moisture left in the soil from winter. Give late summer perennials such as phlox one good watering in the summer as plants begin to flower, which should be enough. In the longer term, consider planting drought-resistant species in your borders such as grasses, Mediterranean type shrubs such as thymes or phlomis, or sedums and other plants with spiky or succulent leaves.

Jobs To Do...

June & July

Azalea

These acid-loving shrubs, which burst with colour in late spring and early summer, are a must if you want to brighten up dull corners and they also look fantastic as standalone specimens in tubs. Azaleas, which are generally smaller, daintier versions of rhododendrons, can be either deciduous or evergreen. I love the evergreen varieties which are low and spreading, producing sheets of flowers in May. They work wonderfully in pots and many are hardy enough to cope with frost pockets, although you have to choose carefully. Good varieties include Rhododendron 'Blue Danube', a compact, neat evergreen azalea which bears masses of mauve flowers, is extremely hardy and ideally placed in

Best of The Bunch

light shade. Another pretty specimen, which is not as robust and will need a sheltered spot, is R. 'Gumpo White', which grows to around one metre (three feet). If you want some bigger types, try deciduous azaleas, which can flower as prolifically as their evergreen relatives but also have fantastic foliage colour in autumn. Azaleas come in a mass of colours, from blues and pinks to reds, oranges, whites and yellows. Acid soil is essential, and they are best off in a sheltered site in partial shade. If you don't choose one of the hardier varieties you may need to put horticultural fleece over the shrubs on nights when frost is predicted, to protect the buds.

Good Enough to Eat!

Keep Peas

Pest Free

If your peas are in flower now, they are at risk from pea moth, which lays its eggs on pea flowers in June and July. You won’t notice them until you open the pods to start shelling your peas and find that one or more of them have been attacked by a small white grub, which is usually still inside the pod. To avoid pea moth, make early sowings of peas which flower in May and early June, or later sowings which flower after July. Alternatively, grow mangetout, which is picked before the peas have developed. Pea and bean weevils can also be a problem earlier on in spring, nibbling notches out of young leaves, however they don’t generally cause serious harm and will not need controlling. If you have gaps in your rows of peas it may be due to mice. Start peas off in pots or sow extra seeds to fill the gaps later.

38 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

• Continue to water hanging baskets and small containers every day. • Thin hardy annuals and vegetables sown in the open ground. • Put nets on fruit cages over soft fruit to protect them from birds. • Lift bulbs which flowered in spring as their foliage dies away. Dry the bulbs well and check for damage before storing. • Plant out arum lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) which have been flowering in the greenhouse, or stand the pots outdoors for their summer rest. • If you didn’t put slow-release feed granules in with your container compost, apply a liquid feed on a weekly basis to flowering annuals in pots. • Plant out young dahlias when all danger of frost has passed. • Thin heavy crops of plums so that fruit size is maintained and the branches are not put under excessive strain.

Be imaginative with climbers

Use an old garden umbrella, stripped of fabric, for a climbing frame, planting deep violet Clematis ‘Jackmanii Superba’ at its base.

Erect tall poles every six feet (1.8m) or so along the garden fence, attaching thick rope between them to form elegant sways. Plant rambling roses, Jasminum officinale, honeysuckle and Clematis montana at the base of poles, guiding them up and along the swags to create swathes of colour. Use climbers to scramble over uninteresting shrubs in the border - clematis will happily climb conifers and other evergreens, creating colour. Use late-flowering viticellas with springflowering shrubs and early-flowering alpinas and macropetalas with laterflowering ones. Sweet peas can also be used for scrambling over shrubs.

Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky June and July 2018 Spot Jupiter in the Summertime Sky: On any clear night in June look south for the brightest star-like object that you can see. This is Jupiter – the biggest planet in our solar system. Incredibly inside that dot of light you could fit more than 1800 Earths! Best time to find Jupiter is just as it gets dark. You’ll notice too a less bright star sat quite close to Jupiter, just underneath it. This is a background star in the constellation of Libra more than a million times further away than Jupiter is from Earth this summer.

See an Eclipsed Moon Rise over the Chilterns: Moonrise on Friday 27 July this year is rather special. We’ll have a full moon, but it’ll rise fully eclipsed in Earth’s shadow. That familiar silver giant appears as a ghostly dark orb over the eastern horizon shortly before 9:30pm. Night’s deepening darkness sees our ‘ghost moon’ rise higher into the sky. As it does so coppery red tones might develop over its surface, colouring the moon to a blood red. Catch Mars at its Closest to Earth Since 2003: From mid-July onwards cast your eyes low to your south-east for a bright orange-red star climbing into the sky. This is Mars. The Red Planet is at its brightest and closest to Earth for 15 years at the end of July. That’s close enough for a small telescope to reveal a wealth of detail on the Martian surface! And if you’re feeling inspired, why not have a go at flying a kite – there will be kite making activities for all the family, plus some of the best kite flyers on hand to give you tips on launching your kite and how to fly it once it’s up and away

Early birds welcome

The kite festivities will start around 11am each day and visitors needing accessible parking are advised to arrive from 10am as it is expecting it to be a busy weekend.

When can we see the kite flying?

Enjoy fantastic, show stopping professional kite displays in the arena all day from 11am – 5pm Saturday 29 July and Sunday 30 July, wind condition dependent.

Fun for all the family

It's a great weekend for all the family. With the wonderful Usborne book stall, face painting, 50 Things before you're 11 and a half tent and arena and kite making tent, there's plenty to entertain the little ones. It is recommended that you come early as the event becomes busy from 12pm onwards.

Tasty treats

You're very welcome to bring a picnic but remember to bring a rug or something to sit on. There will be food and drink treats available including ice smoothies and ice cream, cakes, tea and coffee, a BBQ and even gin tasting.

Do I need to book or buy tickets?

No booking is required and normal parking admission charges apply (free for National Trust members). Please note that there may be limited car parking available during busy times.

Why is Dunstable Downs so special?

There is no denying that the chalk and grassland landscape is really special which is why it’s recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB). With stunning views and a prehistoric landscape, the Dunstable Downs and surrounding areas have been an integral part of Bedfordshire’s history and provide a perfect place for walking and getting closer to nature.

Danesborough Chorus The Danesborough Chorus will be rehearsing the most performed work of this generation, Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man, starting on Wednesday 27th June. We've chosen this work because this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The Armed Man, which is subtitled A Mass for Peace, was first performed in 2000, and it reflects on the passing of a war-torn century, looking forward in hope to a more peaceful future. Our choir will continue rehearsing each Wednesday through July, before taking a summer break in August. Rehearsals resume on Wednesday 5th September, in preparation for a concert jointly with Bedford Choral Society and Milton Keynes City Orchestra in Milton Keynes Theatre on Sunday 14th October.

New singers, in all voice parts, are invited to join us in Aspley Guise Village Hall on Wednesday 27th June, 7.45 pm-9.50 pm. If you'd like to sing this 20th century choral classic with us, please phone membership secretary Carol Yirrell on 01296 680328, and visit our website www.danesborough.org.uk. Chipolata is an active little dog and needs a home where she will get plenty of exercise and attention. She could live with a male dog but no a cat. We think she may have lived outside in the past but she loves a cuddle and will enjoy the opportunity to curl up in front of the fire and be part o family life! She cannot live in Luton.
