Revitalising Dunstable

New £20.1M Dunstable Centre Opens

Dunstable Centre

One of our main priorities as a council is to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. So, we are delighted to confirm that the new £20.1million Dunstable Centre is open to the public from 3rd June, with state-of-the art facilities to help the community be active and access improved library resources. At a time when public services across the country are being squeezed, we have invested in this amazing new building. The old leisure centre and library in Dunstablewere no longer fit for purpose or cost effective to run. By bringing services together under one roof, the new building will reduce running costs, while providing more flexible services and longer opening hours. The centre includes a new, modern leisure facility, with a 100-station health and fitness suite, studios, along with a new library, crèche, café, as well as a flexible community space for other public and community services, such as Citizens Ad-

8

vice and day care. The brand-new library has a large, bright and airy open-plan space, incorporating state-ofthe-art equipment. The space flows seamlessly within the main foyer and is zoned for different activities. There is a fully-accessible ground floor library, with a new digital offer including public computers, iPads and a gaming zone, flexible space for activities, a children’s zone, and new facilities for teenagers. Find out more about the Dunstable library and all our libraries at @CBClibraries on Facebook. The Citizen’s Advice Service have been in the new building since May. Residents can find out more about their services and opening times, or send a message for assistance via the Citizen’s Advice website at www.dunstablecab.org.uk. Citizen’s Advice is now seeking volunteers who would like to train as advisers and trustees to represent the board for the new premises. Call them on 01582 670003 for more details.

Court Drive, Dunstable, LU5 4JD

This facility is managed in partnership with

Eleanor Of Castile And Dunstable When asked what I would like to see on Dunstable High Street if money was available for History and Heritage, my immediate answer was ‘A replacement Eleanor Cross’. Queen Eleanor, wife of Edward I visited the priory on several occasions in her lifetime, making valuable gifts to the canons. The royal marriage was arranged, but they certainly became good business partners, respectful of one another, and very much in love. When Eleanor died in 1290 at Harby, Lincoln, Edward brought her body back to Westminster Abbey via the places she loved, including Dunstable. At each of the twelve overnight resting places he ordered a Cross to be erected, and this was to be not where her body lay for the night, but at a prominent site where people would see it and pray for her soul. Hence the crossroads was chosen for the Dunstable Cross. The Crosses were approximately 42ft high, and

adorned with statues of Eleanor, and the coats of arms of Edward, Ponthieu and Castile. The master stonemason for Dunstable was John Battle who was paid three shillings a week. The Cross cost £100 and was erected before 1294. Sadly it was destroyed in the civil war by Cromwellian troops. Just three original Crosses remain at Geddington and Delapre Abbey, Northamptonshire, and Waltham Cross. Charing Cross is a Victorian replica and a replacement Cross has recently been built at Stamford. Dunstable has been offered a free statue of Eleanor by the American College of Building Arts, who will also ship it to us at no cost. An incredibly generous offer, and it is now up to us as a town to design and fund the base and of course find a suitable site. If we could complete the project before the Priory celebrates its 900th anniversary, wouldn’t that be wonderful. By Jean Yates

Dunstable In Bloom ‘Dunstable in Bloom’ launched our Summer on Saturday 11th May at the ‘Love your Garden’ event in Ashton Square. Plants donated by members and friends were sold and local Dunstable honey was very popular. All proceeds help various planting schemes around the Town. Baskets were planted up to demonstrate our theme of the 5 senses: Sight, Taste, Smell, Touch and Sound. If you are inspired by one or all of these do enter our competitions – and help brighten where you live and the Town. Use the entry form or contact sarah.woodruffe @ntlworld.com All who enter are invited to the Awards Evening on 26th September’

Bowlers certainly enjoy their bowling, but as much talk can be about the quality of the meal provided by a club after a match. We could name a few bowling clubs who are miserly with their food and who leave all the catering to a few ladies. This is not the case at Cheddington Bowls Club, where the men also muck in. Rodney’s roast pork and Richard’s herbed chicken are famed and set a standard few other clubs can match. Bowls is not just about the great game itself, but about fellowship, fun and good food. You can't beat a great game of bowls followed by yummy food at £2 a head – and that invariably includes a tasty pud +, if you want, a choice of beers and wines at very attractive prices! Bowls is a great value sport: a new bowler can join Cheddington Bowls Club for less than the equivalent of a £1 a week. Our fixtures are on our website: cheddingtonbowls.org.uk. A Local Folk Hero

Dun Robber the

Part I

Preamble

Many places have folk heroes (or villians), eg Ely has Hereward the Wake; Sherwood Forest has Robin Hood; Dunstable has Dun. As a boy I learnt of Dun. Firstly I was told that he had a stable cut into the chalk under the cross roads - hence Dun Stable. Perfectly believable to a 10 year old boy. But later on I realised that it would be stupid for a wanted outlaw to stable his horse in full sight of everyone so a change of story was needed. I was then told that the previous name for our town was not Dunstable but Dunstaple and that a king (didn’t know who) had tried to trick Dun into stealing a ring placed on top of a large pillar – ie a staple - positioned outside the church. So Dunstaple was still OK. Later still I learnt that the king was Henry 1st and the time was during the very early 1100s - and that the church hadn’t been built by then. Problem! I clearly needed to keep the same story but shift the pillar. My story then became a large staple driven into the crossroads with the king’s ring on top and that it stood there for a few days under guard as a challenge to Dun. And that the guard was bored out of his skull until a crippled old woman stopped for a chat. But, suddenly, this crippled old crone became very sprightly indeed, slashed the guard’s throat, shinned up the staple, stole the ring, and was away like a scalded cat. Yet later, I learnt that the ring, stolen by Dun, had been 24 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

stapled to the pillar - so Dun Staple still made sense. And since the town’s arms feature a pillar, a staple and a ring, all was sweetness and light. Or was it? Is any of this story true or is it simply a myth, a legend?

To attempt an answer

There have been many stories woven over the centuries around this simple tale and its principal character, Dun (or Dunne, or Duna, or Dunning(e)). Stories in prose or verse abound but nothing has come down from the actual time itself: the earliest record is from the Treatise of Dunstaple written by a canon at the Priory between 1280 and 1290, ie something like 200 years afterwards. This account is the basis of all the other stories and if it is fiction, then so are all the others. So can we give it any credence? If Dun did exist, who was he? ; what was his background? ; when did he live? ; why was he an outlaw? ; and did he give his name to the town? These are questions whose answers are needed.

Background research to the story

1) Joyce Godber (“History of Bedfordshire”,1970) considers that the crossroads between Watling Street and Icknield Way around the year 1100 was surrounded by a thick, virtually inpenetrable forest which would have been an excellent hide out for an outlaw band such as

the imagined Dun and his gang. She regards that there could well be a factual basis to the story but that it has become grossly exaggerated following the original 13th century canon’s recording. 2) Worthington G Smith (“Dunstable, its history and surroundings”, 1904) suggests that Duna was the original Saxon owner of the land around the crossroads and that, following the Norman Conquest he, like hundreds or thousands of other Saxon landowners, was simply dispossessed of his land which was given to one of William’s cronies as a “thank you” for help at the Battle of Hastings, 1066. It is further suggested that Duna was a Saxon soldier in 1066 and that he, plus something like 50 others, had escaped to his former home area and, rather than face a life of feudal servitude under the Normans, chose to remain free, but as an outlaw, and to be as disruptive to the Norman cause as possible. But Duna would be operating many years (roughly 40) before Henry 1st planted his new town at the crossroads in 1107 so, perhaps, there had been an earlier underground stable at the crossroads after all.

fanciful in his opinions; but the stories are, nevertheless, very quaint and appealing. In his chapter “The foundations of Dunstable”, he tells the popular story of Dunne through a series of verses starting :“By Houghton Regis, there where Watling Street is cross’d by Icknil’d-way, there grew a Wood, With bushes thick o’erspread, a covert meet; to harbour such as lay in wait for blood. There lurk’d of Ruffians bold, a hideous rout whose Captain was one DUNNE, of courage stout. No Traveller almost could pass that way but either he was Murder’d, Rob’d, or Kill’d By that lewd crew, which there in secret lay with Murders, Thefts, and Rapes, their hands were fill’d.

6) In “The Dunstaplelogia” (1859) by Charles Lamborn, the account also starts off with the suggestion that Dun had been a soldier at the Battle of Hastings and, having escaped, became a robber. He follows the usual story of Dun and his gang of outlaws frequenting the area around the crossroads and that they lived in the forest knowing its every twist and turn 3) There seems to be a problem, thereby offering escape whenever however, over the Dun of William threatened and making them virtu1st compared with the Dun of ally impossible to catch. Lamborn, Henry 1st roughly forty years later. however, suggests that the gang Is it even possible that it was the did not limit themselves to the same Dun - who by 1107 would be Dunstable area alone but that they well into middle age at least - or is ranged all along the Watling Street there another Dun? from St Albans to Towcester. 4) According to AW Mooring He goes on to say that Thomas (1900), the Dun of popular legend, Dun had been born in BedKing Henry I ie the Dun of Henry 1st, was the fordshire and that he, and his son of Leofdun, the former Saxon owner of the land associates, carried out a string of atrocities, thefts, outraaround the crossroads. So is Mooring’s Leofdun Smith’s geous robberies and murders before being caught and Duna? executed at Bedford. He is also said to have been “low This son in 1100 would be a young man in his prime born” and Lamborn immediately suggests that anyone who might well have taken up the cudgel on his father’s low born in the time of Henry 1st, would not have had behalf in order to avenge his father’s demeaning treattwo names – he would have been either Thomas or he ment under William or, perhaps, to continue his father’s would have been Dun because surnames did not appear outlawry following his death. (especially so far as “ordinary” people were concerned) 5) A series of stories concerning Dunstable and the until centuries later. surrounding area, written in the form of folk legends Lamborn further considers other aspects of the story to and poems and entitled “Dunno’s Originals” was pubbe somewhat suspect and that such variations as these lished by William Nicholls in 1821 in which the story is throw increasing complication and uncertainty upon an often referred to. Unfortunately, Dunno is frequently already complicated, and doubtful, history. incorrect in his historical statements and usually is rather To be continued in Part 2 Issue 43 • June/July 2019

Negative Space Drawing: Tulips by Dr Lorna Moore

Yes, it’s true, anyone can draw and this column will give you inside tips on how to learn to observe and train your hand/eye coordination.

See website for our latest offers... www.thewhitehorseeatonbray.co.uk

Let’s draw flowers focusing on the negative space. This exercise really makes you ‘look’ at the shape of your subject. Put some flowers in a vase on a windowsill (3 or 4 will do) and place a piece of white paper behind them. Sit opposite and look at the space in-between your flowers. Forget you’re drawing flowers and look for the shapes/gaps between each flower and draw those shapes…NOT the flowers. This is hard because you will want to draw a silhouette around them. Do a little bit at a time and see your flowers develop in a white outline. This takes a lot of practise so keep doing it. These shapes are called the ‘negative space’ i.e. the space between objects. This is fun if you can let yourself go with it. Once you have your shapes start to shade them in so they are dark (I used charcoal) and your ‘positive image’ i.e. the flowers will stand out more. You should end up with a white positive image and a black negative image. You don’t have to do flowers you can do trees, buildings and objects (just make sure there is space in-between things). Share your work, we would love to see it! Tag us and Dr Lorna on social media and use the hashtag

Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky June & July 2019 See Jupiter at its brightest for 2019: This June Jupiter reaches its closest point to Earth for the year, and so it appears at its brightest in the sky. To find Jupiter look for a bright star-like object low to the south east as it gets dark. Through the night Jupiter rises higher in the sky. Between midnight and 1am it reaches its highest point directly towards the south at about +18 degrees above the horizon. View a partial lunar eclipse: Full moon on 16 July this year is a rather special sight. Look to your south-east shortly after 10pm and you’ll see the moon rise partially hidden by Earth’s shadow. It’ll hang low over the landscape as a gleaming cosmic smile from the heavens, while dark grey or coppery tones fill the upper third of the moon’s disc. The eclipse lasts right through until close to midnight so offers some excellent photo opportunities as it’ll remain quite low down in the sky. Find electric blue clouds at the edge of space: June and July are the best times of year to hunt down noctilucent clouds (NLCs). These eerie electric blue strands of cirrus-like cloud sometimes appear draped over the northern horizon after dark. Sunlight reflecting off tiny particles of frozen meteor dust in Earth’s upper atmosphere are thought to cause these strange night-shining clouds. Look out for them in the sky towards your north between 11pm and 2am. By Seb Jay - Image Credit: Neal Simpson Dark Sky Telescope Hire www.darkskytelescopehire.co.uk

Happy Feet For Summer

If you have a lot of rough and hard skin, foot conditions such as athletes foot, fungal nail infection, an ingrowing toe nail, calluses, corns or verrucas, a session or a number of appointments with a chiropodist or podiatrist is recommended. The terms are interchangeable, but strictly in the UK, ‘Podiatrist’ is a reserved title meaning that it can only be used by those registered with the Health Professions Council. Inside the profession, chiropody is used to suggest the routine processes of foot care, whilst podiatry is indicative of the higher skills and academic levels. Once any medical issues have been eliminated, you may wish to keep up the look and condition of your feet through pampering at home, or a trip to the beautician for a pedicure.

We’ve kept them hidden in shoes and boots all Winter, but when Summer comes it’s good to put on a pair of sandals or flip flops, or perhaps even walk around with bare feet. So, how can we make sure our feet are in tip-top condition and feel confident about showing them off to all around us?

Routine maintenance tasks should include: • Cutting your toe nails short. The use of clippers is generally recom-

mended. Nails should be no more than a couple of millimetres over the edge of your toe.

• Next, file your nails using an emery board. File them so they are smooth, neat and square.

• It’s good to soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and use a foot scrub or lotion to get them clean and feeling smooth and silky.

• Various tools and devices are available to help you file hard and crusty skin to make it smooth. At home and at a beautician’s this is likely to be a pumice based product. A chiropodist is more likely to use a blade.

• Apply moisturising cream daily and massage it in well, including be-

tween the toes. Let it dry before putting on socks or tights, as persisting dampness can cause fungus or athletes foot.

• Once a week, gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick to keep your toes healthy. If you want to beautify too, you can apply polish to your toe nails. Some polishes have nourishing qualities. Make sure you remove traces of any previous polish with an appropriate remover. Toe separators can make the job of applying polish easier. Ongoing measures for foot health include putting your feet up after shopping sprees or long walks, and making sure shoes fit properly to prevent blisters or crushing of toes.

5 Summer Superfoods

To Help Burn Fat If you love food but still want to lose extra pounds, then have a look at these summer favourites. They are low-calorie, filling and super tasty with a few special tweaks. Watermelon - Do you like the sensation of

feeling full but still want to loose weight? Watermelon can satisfy your sweet tooth without the calorie density of other fruit. Plus have a refreshing lift on hot days if kept in the fridge. It's high in water content (92%) but one average 9lb watermelon will still set you back 1355 cals. So do share it out!

Rocket salad - If you find plain salad boring to eat without a dressing, then try a side of mildly peppery rocket. It doesn't need to be swamped in high calorie sauce to taste good like a Caesar salad (470 vs 15 cals) and is a powerful antioxidant. So you will age more gracefully too! Cucumber - another cooling agent for those hot summer days. Great when sliced and kept in the fridge for a snack instead of calorie heavy potato chips. (45 vs 500+ cals.) Add pink salt generously to treat your taste buds and replace precious electrolytes after sweating! Steak or Quorn roast - Got a hankering to sink your teeth into something substantial? Get a large dose of protein to satisfy the eyes and belly. Lean protein keeps us fuller for longer so we will eat less! (300 cals in a 8oz steak or 225 in half a Quorn roast vs a Âź pound hamburger 460 cals). Chilli - if you have a sweet tooth and want to change

your taste buds to like more savoury foods, may I recommend this hot little gem? Just a tiny bit of raw chilli or chilli flakes in your food will boost your metabolism by 8% to burn more fat!

Home&Garden Composting Composting is an inexpensive, natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient-rich food for any garden. It’s both easy to make and use. By home composting, carbon captured by plants from the atmosphere is returned to the soil which helps maintain moisture levels, adds nutrients, improve the soil’s workability, and helps reduce the release of nitrous oxide. It also is a great way of recycling items that may otherwise be thrown away in the bin. Ian McMurdy, Waste Awareness Officer at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Many people don’t realise that a third of their household black bin is made up of organic waste that could be turned into compost. Although many households already compost at home, we want more residents to get involved. By recycling this organic waste at home in your compost bin, the same waste breaks down in an environmentally-friendly way and can be used to keep your garden green and looking fantastic.” For those wanting to try home composting, now is the ideal time to get started. Residents can purchase discounted 220 litre compost converter from as little as £13.50 and the council has negotiated a fantastic ‘buy one, get one half price’ offer, so residents can purchase another for only £6.75, plus a £5.99 delivery charge. For further information about all the compost bins and accessories, call 0844 571 444 and quote reference CBC30L. Alternatively, you can order your home compost bin and composting accessories online at www.cbc.getcomposting.com. For more information about composting and the subsidised compost bin offer, visit www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/recycling

36 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Get green-fingered and find out how easy home

composting is by following our 5 step-by-step top tips:

1. Find the right site Ideally place your compost bin in a reasonably sunny site on bare soil. If you have to put it on concrete or patio slabs, ensure there’s a layer of paper, twigs or existing compost at the bottom. 2. Add the right ingredients - There are loads of things from your home and garden you can add to enrich your compost. ‘Greens’ (nitrogen-rich): tea bags, grass cuttings, vegetable peelings, fruit scraps, coffee grounds and nettles. ‘Browns’ (carbon-rich): egg shells, cereal boxes, newspaper, garden prunings, tissues and paper, hay and straw. But remember to keep these things OUT: meat, fish, cooked food, dairy products, diseased plants, nappies and perennial weeds.

3. Fill it up and wait a while - A 50/50 mix of ‘greens’ and ‘browns’ is the perfect recipe for good compost. It takes between nine and twelve months for your compost to become ready to use, so now all you need to do is wait and let nature do the work. Keep on adding greens and browns to top up your compost and give the occasional stir. 4. Ready to use - you’ll know your compost is ready to use when your compost has turned into a crumbly, dark material, resembling thick, moist soil and gives off an earthy, fresh aroma. Lift the bin slightly or open the hatch at the bottom of your compost bin and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork, spade or trowel. 5. Use it - Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshell; this is perfectly normal. Use it to enrich borders and vegetable patches, plant up patio containers or feed the lawn.

PER TREATMENT

Your first choice for lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. Fortunately, many of our Complete Programme customers enjoyed the full range of our treatments, including Oasis – our triple action moisture managment treatment – that benefitted their lawns during the heat. Our Enhanced Programme customers have the option of either an Oasis treatment or to have their lawn aerated – a process that creates deep channels into

the root zone to let in vital light, air, water and nutrients. Finally, our NutraGreen Programme caters for those who only want the essentials covered: four treatments to feed their lawn. Easy payment options include Direct Debit, credit & debit card and BACS.

Let us take the hassle out of caring for your lawn. Contact your local branch today.

In Theen Gard

Wriggy Worms The Un-Sung Garden Heroes!

In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the bor-ders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic mat-ter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free? As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm aware-ness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at mak-ing your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? Most kids love worms so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time.Keeping a wormery is very easy, they come in a variety of sizes to suit all households and budgets, it will reduce kitchen waste and provide very nutritious soil for the garden. Although they don’t make great pets

their waste is a lot easier to handle and they save money on fertilisers and compost. I live in an area where we have food waste recyling bins but I never have to use mine because the worms manage all our food waste. Once you’ve bought the wormery (mine came with Tiger Worms) setting it up requires the soil which the worms arrive in and any left over vegetables, but not onions and garlic or citrus fruit as these are too acidic. They particularly like teabags, crushed egg shells, cold mashed potato (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oyster....they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle), cardboard and paper. My wormery is a multi- tray system. You start off feeding your food waste into the bottom tray. At the bottom of the trays above there are holes which allow the worms to transfer them-selves to the next level and as each tray fills, the worms move upwards to the waste in the next tray, leaving compost behind. They are voracious eaters and it’s not long before the next tray is needed. You can harvest the earth about every three months. This can be quite messy, there will always

40 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

be some worms left when the rest have moved up to the next level, so rubber gloves are a good idea. The soil which is removed can be mixed one part worm caste to three parts ordinary soil. The bottom of the wormery has a well for collecting the water (‘wee tea’), it also has a tap, the liquid should be drained and diluted (at 1:10 with water), and used as a very concentrated liquid fertiliser,There aren’t many problems with keeping a wormery the main ones I found were due to the wet and cold weather. In wet weather I found that there was often more liquid than I, or the worms could cope with so I leave the tap open, before I did this I sadly had quite a few drowned worms, a folded newspaper also helps keep the water from just running through and also helps with keeping the worms warm. If the weather is cold the wormery can be stored in the garage or wrapped in bubble wrap or agricultural fleece, If not they do freeze quite stiff, but do not cover the air holes on the lid.If there is a problem with ants, a little Vaseline on the legs of the wormery will soon sort it out.
