eauty trends may come and go, but looking beautiful on your wedding day will always be in style. Whether you’re newly engaged or getting married this weekend, the No. 1 piece of advice is to try to eliminate stress. “Stress plays a lot on our outer beauty, on our skin and hair. Stress-free, it’ll shine through any makeup,” said professional makeup artist and hairstylist Shannon Alexander of Omaha, Nebraska. “Hire a professional! They will be able to help you with the look you are trying to achieve. Quality over quantity for your big day.” Textured chignons are a modern take on a classic hairstyle. “Chignons are beautiful. Very classy,” Alexander said. “One thing with the chignon is, you don’t need to add much to it to update it. It’s always in style. Maybe add flowers or jewels, but keeping it simple is just classy.” For something a bit more extravagant, many brides are choosing a half-up, half-down look with curls. It’s a style that looks timeless yet brides still feel like themselves, Alexander said. Bring it over the top by adding jewels, flowers, tiaras or a long beautiful veil, she said. From oversize blooms to delicate blossoms, flowers real and artificial add a sweet touch to a bride’s look. “They can easily be placed in the hair and secured with bobby pins. Pinning the hair up in a low loose bun with curls and adding some floral is a high request,” Alexander said. For the ceremony, a veil can be placed on top of or below the curls and florals placed
accordingly, Alexander said. A radiant complexion with glowy skin is the perfect face-forward look. “Beautiful, flawless, airbrushed makeup is a good choice for her big day,” Alexander said. She suggests a subtle soft smoky eye using browns and adding lashes to make eyes pop. “Add some highlight and color to the cheeks and keeping it natural, you have a bride that will just glow,” Alexander said. For a more statement look, go for a heavy eye or a bold lip — but stick to just one, Alexander said. • “Before your wedding day, taking care of your hair and skin is important,” Alexander said. “Some brides feel growing their hair long and not getting haircuts for their wedding day will help their stylist. It’s not absolutely necessary to have long locks for an updo. Sometimes extra-long hair can be even harder to put all in an updo.” Extensions can help make hair longer and fuller and be absolutely beautiful, Alexander said. • Clean, dry hair is a must. Because a stylist will be adding products to increase texture, brides should wash their hair the day before to avoid greasy hairlines, Alexander said. • The night before the wedding, be sure to remove all makeup. “A good base will have a beautiful end result and help makeup stay on. This starts with skin. Exfoliate, even treat yourself to a facial a week before. This will help eliminate dead skin cells, hydrate the skin and give a nice canvas for makeup,” Alexander said. • Make sure to have your eyebrows waxed as well. “Eyeshadow will look 10 times better,” she said.

Honeymoon planning: Creating an unforgettable start to forever By Tiffany Ditto Guest Column

ne may think the most important part of a wedding is the ceremony itself, but the experience is enhanced with a great honeymoon and ending those “I dos” with an unforgettable start to forever is something couples shouldn’t forget. “The honeymoon is a great chance for couples to have a new experience and escape from home,” said Sandra Pruitt, a travel consultant for Ruth Young Travel Service in Ardmore, Okla. “The most popular destinations are Hawaii and the Riviera Maya.” Pruitt said Southern Oklahomans often opt for a beach destination for their honeymoon — starting off their marriage with a little slice of paradise. But going somewhere tropical may not be the right honeymoon destination for everyone. Pruitt added that many couples opt to go on a cruise, to a mountainside cabin, or even to a city destination like New York City. When deciding where to honeymoon Pruitt said the first step is to consider your
budget and how many days you plan on vacationing. For those with only a week to spend, a trip to the other side of the world probably isn’t ideal since it can take up to 12 hours just to fly from Oklahoma to romantic cities like Rome or Paris. Not to mention the time it takes to recover from the jet lag. The second step is to pick a destination you and your new spouse will both enjoy that is feasible in the time you have to spend. “Try to be original,” Pruitt said. “Don’t just pick a location because your friends honeymooned there. Do what you like to do. And shop around. Don’t just jump on the first good deal you hear because there may be something else that gets you more bang for your buck.” After you have picked your destination the next step is to arrange transportation and hotel accommodations. Also, go ahead and pre-pay or pick out some activities or excursions you can go on while you’re there. Right before you leave make sure you have packed everything you need and don’t forget to take the time to relax, have fun and enjoy the love you both share.

Tips for Planning a Perfect Honeymoon We are here to help you plan the ultimate dream vacation, your honeymoon. Play the Wild Card! Honeymoons don’t have to mean lying on the beach! If it’s not your spouse’s thing, we can find a compromise with a destination that will make you both happy. Time is Money. Don’t fly halfway around the world if you only have a limited amount of days for your honeymoon. Remember, You Get What You Pay For. Don’t jump on the first good “deal” you see. Our consultants can guide you to get the most value for your money. Be Original! Booking the exact same honeymoons as your friends isn’t always the best choice. When choosing a destination, remember the things that mean the most to you. He Said, She Said. Try not to obsess over travel reviews. Book Early. Book your Honeymoon at least 6 to 9 months in advance. The New Mr. & Mrs. Do not book your Honeymoon with your married name. Make sure that your reservations match the legal document that you will use when traveling.

rides should embody their personal best on their wedding day, whether that means taking the royal route in a princess-worthy ball gown or wearing a trendy jumpsuit or something with a touch of color. “Brides are now getting their inspiration from a variety of places, everywhere from celebrity weddings to traditional magazines,” said Cassandra Sethi, New York City personal stylist and founder of Next Level Wardrobe. Pinterest and Instagram are major sources of inspiration, said Sethi, who offers personalized wedding styling services from engagement shoots to the big day and brunch after. Options abound in gown styles, from conventional to fashion-forward. “While weddings are an exciting time in one’s life and a major moment, it can be a nod to
traditions within their culture and family,” Sethi said. “They may choose to wear traditional outfits from their culture and do traditional religious ceremonies. For those brides that want to be more fashion-forward, I noticed that they usually experiment with incorporating some color and/or choose a design that may not be as traditional, such as cutouts, 3-D applique and super-intricate beadwork.” Designers are going bold with embellishments, Sethi said. “The 3-D applique is a detail that will really make your gown stand out. It is also a great way to incorporate additional colors or metallics into your gown,” she said. Gold, pink, mauve and lavender may not seem like bridal colors, but maybe that’s why they look so good. “I advise for brides that want to incorporate color somehow to think about how much they want to do. Some want full-on color and some just want a SEE GOWNS, PAGE 16

ridal bouquet trends come and go, but personal taste and color theory will always remain. Misty Page, owner of Dodson’s Floral in Ardmore, said the internet has changed the bouquet game, as it’s changed every aspect of wedding planning. Brides-to-be come into the shop armed with color palettes, pinboards and photos and nearly always have a clear vision of what they want their weddings to look like. “A lot of times, when they come in, they have everything picked out,” Page said. “They plan ahead. They’ll at least have their colors chosen.” Page said while weddings might look more unique these days, certain trends still prevail. Flowing, airy, naturalistic bouquets that almost resemble freshly picked wildflowers are more popular than traditionally sculpted, compact bouquets.
“It looks like you just picked it out of a garden, and you’ll have greenery and different things going different directions” Page said. “Traditionally, it was either completely round or cascading.” Blush and wine colors were popular in 2018, and the trend has carried over, but peach and coral tones are taking over 2019. Other crowd-pleasing color combinations include cranberry and sage, navy blue and slate grey, and sunflower yellow and ruby red. “Sunflowers are always big in the fall, or even summer,” Page said. “But like I said, right now it’s really the blush, and very flowy.” Bouquets aren’t the only element where variety and spontaneity are catching on. Page said she still sells plenty of bouquets in more traditional colors, like ivory, white or cream, but they’re often being paired with bridesmaids’ dresses in different colors or styles. “If they do that, then they’ll have all their bridesmaids’ bou-
quets stay the same,” Page said. “Otherwise, they have each one in the wedding party with a different bouquet, and the same thing with boutonnieres.” Page said a similar strategy involves giving each bridesmaid a bouquet composed of just one of the flowers in the bridal bouquet. “Hers is so much larger,” Page said. “Of course, we can’t use all of those in the bridesmaids’. It’s really pretty, and that’s a very new trend.” The 90s put an emphasis on cascading-style bridal bouquets that were more flowing, but still styled. The early 2000s pushed things in a more structured direction, where bouquets were symmetrical and had very little greenery. Page calls the 2000s look the “Martha Stewart round.” “Now, you don’t want to match the color,” Page said. “You want a lot of different shades. It’s a natural flower, so it’s pretty much impossible to match a color perfectly.”
A variety of textures, like greenery, berries, and other non-floral elements are popular as well. Rustic elements like burlap, though not as popular as they were in previous years, still pop up. “We’re in southern Oklahoma, so there’s a lot of rustic-type venues,” Page said. “You have a lot of that farmhouse look.” Page said baby’s breath centerpieces, a simple, affordable option that matches most weddings’ color schemes, remains popular in the region as well. Proteas, on the other hand, are large pink flowers that have been dominating bouquets elsewhere for months now, but the striking South African flower hasn’t quite taken off in Oklahoma. Page pointed out that they bear the same blush color that was so popular in 2018, and their tropical look matches well with coral. “They’re a very big flower,” Page said. “You basically don’t need anything else. I’m not a fan of it just yet, but you never know. Things grow on you.”

touch of it. What’s most important is that they feel amazing in whatever they choose,” Sethi said. Beautiful bows are on trend. “From small, large, multiple — you name it, it is out there,” Sethi said. Sequins add sparkle and a fun twist on the traditional white dress. “My wedding gown was allwhite sequin for my outdoor wedding and was the perfect amount of bling for me. I was also (pleasantly) surprised to discover that it was very lightweight to wear so it didn’t feel weighed down as I greeted guests, sat down for dinner or danced the night away,” Sethi said. Intricate lace and beading can take a gown to the next level. “Berta Bridal is the top example of a designer that falls within this world. Their gowns are absolutely stunning and for the woman who wants to create an unforgettable look through intricate beading details and interesting lacework,” Sethi said. Capes are giving wedding 16 Southern Oklahoma Bride
gowns a regal vibe, and the longer the better. “The cape look is more modern and has an edge to it. Capes can also serve as an alternative to a veil and adds dimension to your gown,” Sethi said. Some modern brides are looking for an alternative to tradition when it comes to the wedding and their gowns, but Sethi advises first considering the season and context. “I would highly recommend a jumpsuit or pantsuit when in doubt about what to wear,” she said. These are comfortable and look elegant and sophisticated on many body types, Sethi said. Plus, it’s a great trend if you have multiple wedding events and want to switch up your looks throughout, and better for a destination wedding from a packing perspective, she said. “At the end of the day, this is your special day along with your partner’s. It is important to feel beautiful, comfortable and authentic in whatever you decide to wear,” Sethi said. “Also, remember that there will most likely be a lot of video and photos taken, so it is worthwhile to make sure every little detail is taken care of, from your clothing, coordination to your partner, hair, makeup and everything in between.”

or the best wedding day, don’t leave anything to chance. Stock the bridal suite with the essentials to be sure you look good, feel great and head to the altar relaxed and in style.
• Pamper yourself pretty Freshen up quickly with express teeth whitening kits, essential oils and skin lotion, said Wendy Dahl, president and principal planner at Chic Productions, a wedding and event planning company with locations in Huntington Beach and Palm Desert, California. “Be sure you are not in your gown when using any beauty product,” Dahl said. An amenity kit with nail files, fashion tape, mints and any other type of item that wouldn’t typically be included with the use of the suite is also a great idea, Dahl said.
• Be ready for emergencies Items that can save the day are safety pins, heel protectors, shoe insoles, moleskin bandages for blisters, petroleum jelly for anything that rubs against 18 Southern Oklahoma Bride
your skin and baby powder to protect against chafed skin under tight gowns, Dahl said.
• Go for less stress “If gowns have a lot of buttons down the back, bring a crochet hook and leave it for the couple at the end of the evening. A portable steamer is also a good idea to have on hand to get rid of any wrinkling that happened during transport,” Dahl said.
a rolling garment rack for all of the gowns,” she added.
• Good advice “Never hang your gown on
the sprinkler heads in the room. You could set off a fire alarm, and everything you brought with you will get soaked in water,” Dahl said.
• Keep the energy up The wedding day can be so busy a bride may not even have time to eat, so set up a brunch to be served in the suite. “Wraps and sandwiches work well because you don’t need plates. Cheese boards and charcuterie boards are also great to have on hand because they are easy to eat a little here or a little there,” Dahl said.
• Work like a pro Beauty teams work in front of windows to create the best look in natural light, so power strips are always a great idea to allow more mobility in the room, as are directors chairs so you sit higher and closer to the stylist, Dahl said. “If the room doesn’t have a full-length mirror, I’d request one to be brought in along with

The Art of the
Invitation
By Tiffany Ditto Guest Column
P
icking out the right invitations is a chance to not only show all the hard work you’re putting into your dream wedding, but also a chance to get creative and have fun — all the while giving your guest list a tease as to what’s in store during your big day. Invitations say a lot. Those few little words on a piece of cardstock not only tell your guests the date and time of your big day, where to go, and how to dress, but also set the tone for just how fun or extravagant your wedding will be. Adding your own flair to your invitation isn’t something to stress about, but rather, a time to let your personalities shine through. With custom designs, motifs, pictures, calligraphy, maps and other visual elements it can be hard for brides to narrow down just what to include — which is why some brides are turning to custom printing shops that have designers who will do all the heavy lifting for them. Don Black, owner of Specklemeyer Printing in Ardmore, Okla., has been in the custom printing business since he bought the shop with his father in 1983, and he’s printed his fair share of wedding invitations. “We know what it takes to create a modern invitation,” Black says. “And we will work with each customer to make sure they have the right invitation for their special event. “ Black said that throughout his years printing wedding invitations he’s seen the trends change dramatically. What used to be ivory white paper with black script has evolved into a full-color statement piece complete with engagement photos, additional cards with directions to the event or telling you to make it a date night and leave the kiddos at home. “We recommend keeping a simple design,” Black said. But simple doesn’t mean boring. Some of 2019’s hottest
5 Tips
for designing your invitation: 1. Your list of potential attendees. 2. Photos you may want to include on the invitation. 3. Enough time — be sure you will have three weeks notice for guests after they receive the invitation in the mail. (They have to ask off work too.) 4. The address of your venue. 5. A color scheme in mind for your event. wedding invitation trends include using envelopes with patterned inside liners, cardstock not in the traditional rectangular shape (like the shape of the state you’re getting married in), geometric or floral designs and letter pressed invitations for a vintage vibe. Aside from putting the time, date, place and location of the wedding and reception, couples should include additional cards alongside their invitation and be sure these cards cater to your guests. For example, if you have someone visiting from out of town you may include a map card for directions and listings for hotel accommodations. Some couples also elect to include a menu card so that guests know what kind of meal to expect, and know if they will be eating at your reception or grabbing a bite to eat on the way home. Another great tip, is to include how you would like your guests to dress for the reception/ceremony. Wording SEE INVITATIONS, PAGE 27

What to know about
ring insurance
By Melissa Erickson More Content Now
W
hen you start rocking a ring on your left hand, the first thing you think about probably isn’t insurance, but an engagement ring is one of the most important and valuable items a person owns. Most often consumers “are truly not informed of the implications of their engagement ring not being properly insured,” said Tyler Krowiorz, brand marketing manager at Jewelers Mutual Insurance Group. The average value of an engagement ring is $5,700, according to a 2017 The Knot survey. “It makes sense to do due diligence around insurance options for that new engagement ring before making a decision,” Krowiorz said. “It’s worn every day, everywhere. And the bride-to-be may not be used to wearing a ring. So the chances of it getting lost or damaged during day-to-day activities as seemingly benign as washing your hands, going to the gym or removing gloves in cold weather
are quite high.” Policies vary from carrier to carrier, but an engagement ring is usually covered under a standard homeowners insurance or renters policy. “However, the limits are what becomes important here,” Krowiorz said. The standard limit ranges between $1,500 and $2,500. “That means if your ring is over that value, and you lose it, you’ll be responsible for the balance out of pocket if you want to replace it,” Krowiorz said. One option is to add a “floater” or “rider” to your policy that provides additional coverage specific to the ring and its amount, Krowiorz said. The danger is if you make a claim on a lost, damaged or stolen ring, it could raise your rates, he said. “An additional option would be insuring your engagement ring with a carrier who specializes in jewelry. This ensures you’re getting comprehensive coverage specific to your piece that would cover you against loss, theft, damage and mysterious disappearance,” Krowiorz said.
