// FEATURED GIGS. Words by Aimee Williams & Cherry Pullingers
// Having already performed a fantastic show at Unit back in February, The Joy Formidable are back in Southampton, this time playing The Joiners on Friday 10th June. This is a second chance to see them live, and one that shouldn’t be missed. Being named as ones to watch by the Guardian, this exciting Welsh three piece will be playing songs off their 8 track mini album “A Balloon called Moaning” (www.myspace.com/thejoyformidable for a free download!). Their music is sometimes dramatic and intense, yet always melodic and definitely something that could be listened to whilst on a long summers drive. Fingers crossed for some nice weather so we can test out that theory!

// NME tipped Leeds band Dinosaur Pile-Up are currently defying the rumours that dinosaurs are extinct by bringing their roaring, alternative tracks on a tour of the UK including a stop at The Joiners on Thursday 18th June, alongside the Old Romantic Killer Band. Taking their name from a scene in blockbuster movie King Kong, the band are currently enjoying much deserved success after being featured in NME’s New Noise issue 2009 and on Kerrang’s ‘Introducing’. Even though they list random influences such as ‘Butter & Jam sandwiches’ and ‘Cars with plastic wood on them’, expect a raucous performance of moody grunge music with a traditional ballsy rock twist.

10/06 // With a name that sounds like an Irish limerick, Tim and Sam’s Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam bring their beautifully innate and magical music to The Joiners on Tuesday 16th June. The instrumental four piece are one of the hardest working bands around, and have plaudits in abundance. Huw Stephens thinks they are ‘beautiful’, Tom Robinson thinks they are ‘deliciously hypnotic’ and The Guardian describes them as ‘Like listening to Sigur Rós, without the worry of deciphering Hopelandic.’ With new single ‘Summer Solstice’ set for release on June 21st, we think that Tim & Sam will be the sound track to many a summer’s day in 2009.

// Finnish metalheads, The Bleedout have made it their aim to create music that doesn’t follow any trends. The band have seen spots of trouble within the group recently which lead to the parting of ways with their original guitarist but now things are back on track with two new guitarists and plans for their first set of international gigs in June. The Bleedout will bring their boisterous, trend defying stage show to the Joiners on Friday June 26th alongside As They Burn and Desolated. In the bands own words; “Step it up. Activate the pit.”

// LOCAL ONES TO WATCH... // WAITING FOR SIRENS Words by Sarah Brogden
// If you’re an admirer of pop-rock, Waiting For Sirens are a definite must see this month. Southampton based, these guys are favoured greatly among the local scene. Since building a strong fan base down South, the group’s recognition has elevated and continues to grow with every show. On the surface their music may seem the norm for this type of genre, but by blending together a combination of guitarists and drummers with a pianist, the group have made themselves stand out. Some tracks consist of mellow, smooth tones whilst others are vibrant and deep, but all are positively contagious. Soon to be co-headlining at The Joiners on Sunday 6th June, guitarist, Ben Mercer, is looking forward to gracing the stage one again: “We love playing at the Joiners. We know the sound will always be great, and there’s always a big crowd and a good atmosphere.”With incredible skill, motivation and passion for music under their belts, expect The Joiners to rupture with Waiting For Sirens’ energy rumbling throughout...a rumble which will leave you craving for more. Listen at www. myspace.com/waitingforsirens.
// BURN THE FLEET Words by Jess Macdonald
// Joining their friends onstage as co-headliner on the 6th are Burn the Fleet, who also recently supported My Vitriol last month and have been played on Katie P’s rock show on Xfm. The show will be a big Uni send off as the members of both headliners will all be finishing their final year with a bang. Lead singer Andrew Convey said; “We’re well excited to be playing the show, especially with our good friends from Waiting For Sirens. It’ll be a little sad playing to all our Uni mates for one last time, but we’re gonna have a massive party!”. They say they are difficult to categorize into a genre, but we find it exciting to hear so many different sounds from one band. Andrew added; “We have a hard time saying what we sound like, we’re heavy in a way, a post-hardcore band with singing.” Over the next few months the guys will be devoting 100% of their time to the band whilst writing their debut album, followed by a tour later in the year, check them out at www.myspace.com/burnthefleetband.

// LIVE REVIEWS:
// JOHNNY FOREIGNER // 12/05 Words by Adam Parker
// A trio of Midlands musicians followed a trio of solid supporting acts in the form of Venice Ahoy, Calories and Copy Haho. The Joiners played host to a short, sharp blaring slice of pure vigour and energy in the music and spirit of Johnny Foreigner, a Birmingham band about to release their second album. Firing through an assorted jumble of old and new tracks, the noise flowing through the room rocked the walls and crowd. Songs from their first EP and debut album, ‘Waited Up ‘Til It Was Light’, were met with rapturous applause, singing and stomping, whilst the unheard, brand-new material showcased an even harder, brasher approach to their unique brand of indie rock. The volume was turned up and the handclaps came fast and furiously throughout the night as Alexei, Kelly and Junior bounced off one-another seamlessly throughout the set. The lyrics and vocals alternated between pleading, screeching, hollering and direct talking, not too dissimilar to Los Campesinos!, a band with which Johnny Foreigner have toured. If the night’s set was anything to go by, Johnny Foreigner have an incredibly promising second album on the way, set to blow speakers via reassuringly chaotic guitars, drums and synths.
// DANANANAKROYD // 13/05 Words by Zoe Whitfield
// Dananananaykroyd; See it written a few times and you might be able to spell it. Hear it said a few more times and you might just be able to say it. Listen to ‘Watch This!’ and you’ll love it. Rolling into The Joiners as part of May’s Joiners Escape, the Glaswegian six piece are one of the most fun live bands we’ve seen in a while. Following main support from Video Nasties, whose sound is a lot clearer today than back when we listened to their demos, Dananananaykroyd are a twelve legged bundle of joy. While their signature font and lopsided haircuts echo their more screamo moments, their charm, characterised by a mid-gig phone call to ‘Lucy, studying for her GCSEs’, is undoubtedly playful indie with a hint of the Eddie Argos. Singer Calum barely stays on-stage, first roaming through the crowd in a Faris Rotter fashion, before remembering what band he’s in and hugging each audience member. Not to be outdone joint vocalist-come second drummer John ends the gig with a tunnel, and somewhere between the two there is a dance off. Remaining onstage, David, Duncan, Laura and Paul offer to answer any audience questions including, “are you actually Scottish?” Good banter and hand claps all round. // DANANANAKROYD

// THE BOXER REBELLION // 15/05 Words by Stephanie Stevens-Wade
// With The Joiners Escape into full swing we welcomed NME favourites The Boxer Rebellion to Southampton. The crowd was heavily prepared for the headliners after impressive supports from Red Drapes and Kaputt. Playing songs from both their debut album ‘Exits’, and their latest instalment ‘Union’, the gig was a cosy gathering noticeably divided into old and new fans. Single ‘Evacuate’ was a definite highlight of the night. A previous iTunes ‘single of the week’, it’s a dark sounding song with an intense mixture of noise and melody and an excellent representation of their latest album with vocals that are perfectly strained, reflecting the nature of the lyrics. The Boxer Rebellion seemingly like to climb musical mountains, starting low and relatively simple and building it into a bigger and fuller sound. It’s a delicate process they excel at; especially in their encore of the emotional and flawless ‘Misplaced’ and the energetic crowd pleasing ‘Watermelon’. On a cold miserable Friday night they managed to create emotive sounds and stimulate the senses, look forward to more of the same if you manage to catch them on the festival route this summer.

// PUNK ROCK FRIDAYS Words by Hannah Mahony
Southampton’s legendary Wrong Way Round Promotions present another ‘Punk Rock Friday’ at Unit on Friday 12th June as the legend that is Dave House (bassist from one of the best hardcore acts ever The Steal) returns to Southampton with a brand new album set to release June 1st. The equally talented Leumuria, a geek punk rock act from the USA will be playing a unique blend of female and male vocals with a hint of the Weakerthans thrown in for good measure. If it’s fresh, new and exciting UK music you’re after look no further than A Broken Root, also on the line up. These fast tempo’d indie punk rockers will get your heads bopping and your feet dancing. Still not convinced? Here’s the final testament from the man behind Wrong Way Round Promotions; Ricky Bates; ‘Punk Rock Fridays are an exciting time. When music’s becoming stale we are here to re-inject the fun’. Be prepared for another night of amazing live music from Dave House & Lemuria. Not only are your ears spoilt for choice with three amazing acts but those through the door before 10pm will receive a raffle ticket to be part of the punk rock raffle where you can win tickets, vinyl, cds and more!
