There is something so inviting about the warmth and colours of autumn. In this issue we look at fashion and interior trends that embrace the season with rich, deep colours – such as navy, burgundy, mustard, and deep greens – and textured fabrics that offer an ultra-lush look. Be inspired by Covet Me (pg. 17) and the fashion editorial (pg. 41) that was photographed at Riccarton House as the first of the autumnal leaves began to fall. As our city prepares for the cooler weather we also take a look at more serious matters in our rebuild section (pg. 34). This month’s focus is on ‘As is, where is’ properties, and we outline what you need to know before selling or buying. I also had the opportunity to speak
with the beautiful Abigail Boyle (pg. 14). As prima ballerina in the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company, her stellar career is as impressive as the work that goes on behind the scenes. Looking ahead to Easter weekend at the end of the month, we provide some advice for travelling families in the new Style Junior section. You will love our showcase of children’s fashion straight from the catwalks of Europe (pg. 48). Ross Kiddie takes the new matt-look Peugeot 208 for a spin (pg. 64) and with weddings on many people’s minds, we offer advice and top trends for the big day, too (pg. 64). Enjoy the latest Style, Victoria Tait STYLE EDITOr

It is funny how a silent auction can be so jolly noisy sometimes, but that is exactly how it was when Oarsome O’Fare happened once again. The luxury items up for bidding were quiet enough but as guests filed in to the marquee, the conversation rose. Soon the sound of friends meeting friends, with joking and laughter thrown in became a loud and happy babble, which carried the evening along perfectly. There was much to be happy about as bids were placed and the funds for the various rowing teams grew mightily. Smartly turned out pupils proffered trays of goodies which blessed the tastebuds but cursed the waistline! Always a great party and with the help of miraculous weather, McKenzie & Willis pulled off one of the best yet… No one wanted to leave!

Art was on the walls, the floor, even in the air as a space once familiar, came back to life with the sounds of celebration. Arising out of the apocalypse which gobbled up much of Christchurch’s heritage, CoCa stands on the spot where CoCa always stood, brighter and stronger for the city. Throughout the chambers on both floors, guests explored to peruse the works and gaze with appreciation on the fluid ballerina, as well as the seemingly boneless acrobats who performed. Open for business once more, CoCa awaits the art lovers to come and feast.

Blood, sweat and sheers Abigail Boyle, a dancer with the Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB), has received recognitions for both her classical and contemporary roles and is at the top of her game. Speaking with Victoria Tait, Abigail provides an insight into the world of a ballerina.
It’s almost every little girl’s dream to become a ballerina, however, the reality is long days of intense physical and mental exhaustion. With the intensity of each role it is not hard to admire Abigail Boyle’s determination to perfect every role she assumes. Initially training in Christchurch at the since-closed International Ballet Academy, Abigail joined the RNZB in 2005. Her principal roles have included Didy Veldman’s Carmen, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Aurora, and George Balanchine’s Who Cares? She has toured with the RNZB to China, USA, UK and Italy, and in 2013, she featured on the reality television show The Secret Lives of Dancers. Could you describe a typical day in the studio, when preparing for a performance such as Speed of Light? Class starts at 9.30am after a personal warm-up. Class is an hour and a half long and it’s a chance for us to warm-up get our bodies and minds ready for the day’s rehearsal. At 11am we rehearse the upcoming show – in this case, it’s an amazing show called Speed of Light – I’m in all three of the dance works so it’s a full and busy day. We have one hour for lunch break and then continue working until 6pm. I usually ice my lower legs and stretch at the end of the day and sew a new
pair of shoes to prepare for the next day. Most weeks we work Monday through and including Saturday. What was the first solo role you performed? Can you tell us you how felt during this performance? I was given solo roles in my first year working for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, but my first title role was Carmen in 2010. I knew I suited the role and the contemporary choreography sat well on my body. It’s a role that needed

a lot of confidence and enthusiasm so I was focusing on that rather than my nerves. I thoroughly enjoyed every performance and would love to revisit it before I retire. With having danced major roles in both contemporary and classical ballet, can you describe the major differences? And, do you have a preference? I find classical ballet takes more out of you in a shorter amount of time than contemporary. Contemporary is more extreme on the

body, but it can be more forgiving in the sense you can adapt slightly. Classical is strict in making perfect positions and you feel fatigue more quickly. Personally, I have more long-term injuries during a classical season than during a contemporary one. I can’t pick a favourite as I see equal beauty in both. What advice would you give to your younger self or someone embarking on a career in dance? You’ve gotta love it. If you don’t you won’t want to live and work in the studio, therefore you won’t improve. I have always stood by the quote: “The will to win is never as important as the will to prepare to win.” What can people expect from Speed of Light? Speed of Light is a such an exciting programme. For audiences to be able to see these three internationally acclaimed works by some of the world’s leading choreographers all in one night is amazing. In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated is iconic and has been danced by some of the world’s best ballerinas – I’m honoured to be dancing in their footsteps. Selon Desir is fast and powerful set to the most moving music by Bach – the RNZB first performed this work during our international tour to the UK and Italy at the end of the year, so it’s great to be performing it for NZ audiences now. Cacti is so much fun, it’s really witty with split-second timing and it’s such an entertaining work with the bonus of having the New Zealand String Quarter performing on stage with us. All I can say to Cantabrians is don’t miss Speed of Light; it’s a world-class show.

"We also endeavoured to showcase what can be done with innovative construction methodologies, but on a grand scale." – Israel Cooper, director of Buildtech
this home has been assembled as three separate structures, each offering an exceptional view of the surrounding landscape. Director of Buildtech israel cooper describes this perfectly. “the brief to the architect was to create a home where different aspects of the landscape could be appreciated from different rooms. the use of picture windows, full-height glazing and extending wings of the house help to channel views in different directions. “the farmland changes seasonally: bright ochre in summer, deep green in winter. the home sits seamlessly in its environment with natural landscape drawing up to its edge. “A walled courtyard separates the main house from the guest quarters, creating a sheltered, intimate garden within the larger farmland setting.” the different wings of the house create a number of outdoor areas that can be used, depending on the weather and

Once again each of these offer a different view and perspective on the landscape. inside, the interiors have been designed to compliment the exterior views by keeping the colour schemes neutral and minimalistic, thus drawing the eye to the landscapes. these are framed by large windows in every room. it’s almost as if there is a digital painting on the wall consistently changing the mood of the rooms with the weather and seasons. the kitchen island and dining table are positioned in front of a large window overlooking the Southern Alps, the effect of this is spectacular, bringing the outside environment inside. erica Brouard and richard Dalman of Dalman Architecture have worked closely with Buildtech to design a family home that is functional, but also sits comfortably in its dramatic setting. the construction methods used are as contemporary as the design: “We also endeavoured

Top Bookshelf sTyling Tips • Mix up the book placement – Try a mix of vertical and horizontal arrangements. Do this both within the same shelf and then also try mixing up the way entire shelves are arranged so that one shelf is all horizontal and another is all vertical. By alternating colour, size and orientation you can create visual interest. • Arrange your books by colour – Bring out your inner librarian and colour block your books. • Add decorative objects – A beautiful bowl, plate or an antique object creates interest and texture within the shelves. • Use artwork – Incorporating artwork into your shelf scheme is a must. You can prop up small pieces on the shelves and even hang larger pieces on the shelves, to create an English library look. Black and white pictures can be used to add a break in the shelves. • Paint your bookshelves – Painting your bookshelf the same colour as your wall will create a seamless and unified background for your books. • Treat it like a feature wall – Add bright books and objects to your bookshelf to bring colour to a monochromatic room.

Find YouR PERSonaL ColouR Style Planning to decorate but not sure which colours to choose? Many of us struggle to decide what decorating style we like and want to live with. Resene Colour Consultant Rebecca Long takes us through some of the options. With a bit of confidence and good advice, it’s fairly easy to discover your own style. We all know that introducing a few elements of your personality to a room can make it feel instantly welcoming. When it comes to colour, this takes shape in what we call ‘comfort’ colours. These are colours that you instantly identify with and will put you at ease in any room. Let your inner self be the judge of what’s going to work well for you. While there are many beautiful whites and neutral colours in the Resene collections, make them a considered choice rather than be driven by a fear of getting it wrong with a bolder colour. However, if you are still unsure of what colour scheme to use, opt for off-white or beige as a fallback. To help you find the right colours for your place and your personality, a Resene Colour Expert can visit your home and help you choose colours for your interior and/or exterior. Book a free in-store appointment at your local Resene ColorShop. Resene has colour experts based in all ColorShops who can work with you and show you large swatches from the in-store colour library. This makes it easier to judge which ones work well together. With your favourite colours as highlights in your home, you naturally create your own personal style.

A winter sanctuary
F c
Jess Munro of Frobisher Interiors gives us some stress-free and inexpensive ways to transform your light summery interiors into a warm cozy sanctuary. Being seasonally on trend is about enhancing and changing the ornamentation items around instead of having to break the bank. This can be as simple as changing the cushions or adding more to create a layering effect. Bringing in some beautiful greenery from the garden to convey natural organic elements to the interior, is a perfect way to carry the outdoors in. Concentrate on a focal point. If you have a fire place, this is a fantastic feature to focus on in winter. Highlight the hearth by placing décor items around the fireplace, these could be a cluster of candles or a big feature mirror above the hearth. Re-configure your furniture by placing your occasional chairs in front of the fire
thus making use of your heating source that portrays a beautiful effect in your space. Texture is key when styling your interior. Faux throws and wool textures are great in the winter to snuggle up to in front of the fire. Drape your throws over the side of the sofa or your occasional chair, layer up cushions with a combination between plain and pattern, but try not to overdo it as you want that soft, subtle transition from the summer scheme. Introducing different colours and changing your artwork around each season can really help to set the scene. Lighting is a big influence in the interior, too. Most lighting fixtures are very versatile and you can use the same fixtures all year round,

I l b t a h but you can still enhance your ambience with décor items. Glass lanterns look great in a cluster of three, with the different heights staggered. You can never go wrong with candles – the scent and the
ambience of the flame creates a warm, luxurious feeling. There is a misconception about using cold colours, such as blues and greens in winter, but you a pop of colour will always pack a subtle punch.

WhaT’s The alTernaTive?
The environment is starting to play a large role in the way we look at heating our homes, mark rayner looks at two possible alternatives to conventional heating. We are all familiar with the concept of using electric or gas heaters to warm the air in our homes, and though energy-efficient products such as heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular, there are a number of alternative methods of home heating which may also be worth considering.
Only for those people who want heat when it’s cold!
Hydronic Heating This has been around for centuries, and though much more popular in the northern hemisphere (with the ubiquitous central heating system in most UK homes), its noticeable benefits are beginning to be appreciated here as well. Essentially, hydronic heating uses circulating warm water to carry heat around a building be it in underfoot piping embedded in concrete flooring or through a series of wall-mounted radiators. It’s an efficient way to heat a home in that water carries more heat than air, and if adding the economical and environmental bonus of solar heating into the mix, it’s definitely a system to consider – especially if linked to your hot water system. Radiant heating is also very comfortable and cosy, distributing warmth evenly with none of the circulating air movement associated with heat pumps and fan heaters.

Convergence Office Warming Party Getting back to work after the holidays can be a bit of a drag, especially when the weather is good, but there is an antidote, so keep reading. Faced with a new working year, the folk at Convergence threw a cocktail party for clients and staff to prepare for and celebrate the times ahead. Of course it rained but the dribble from the heavens was no impediment for invitees who braved the soggy streets to be there. The suite of offices buzzed with chit-chat and conviviality whilst outside, the city began to steam as the rain abated. If only all offices were so jolly, it would make one rush to work in the morning!

Floral Passion The usual flower arrangements found in churches were overshadowed in an almost biblically-epic manner when Floral Passion opened with a blaze of brilliance, at the Cardboard Cathedral, in which burning bushes are not permitted. In an artistic alliance, Jenny Gillies and Patricia Proctor wove the shapely leafiness of nature, with the spectrum of heaven, creating a revelation of petalled colour on earth. The wearable creations of cloth and stitches were paraded through the hallowed house, bringing a blessing of art to the city and taking those who are receptive back to the place where it all began, the garden.

MAKE AN ENTRANCE
Landscape architect Craig Wilson tells us how to transform your driveway from a functional space to an impressive entrance to your home.
A driveway is the first impression and experience visitors will have of your property. With a couple of key considerations you can transform a driveway space from a functional area and entrance to a space that sets the tone and expectation for the rest of the outdoor space and garden. Firstly, if it's possible, don’t make this space too small. This area may include off-street parking, and storage space for trailers, caravan and boat. You will need to allow enough space for turning circles and vehicle movements without creating circulation restrictions and conflict. In a larger space think carefully about where you want visitors to park and how this relates to the front door entry. Its not always intuitive to get this relationship right – we’ve probably all experienced that moment when visiting a location where upon arrival it's not obvious where to park. Good design can create and reinforce the entry experience you anticipate for your guests. Your driveway material doesn’t have to be singular. You may consider mixing driveway surfaces and textures to create visual interest. This can help an otherwise large area of hard surface read as less expansive and
a more interesting and welcoming space. Use exposed aggregate concrete bands poured between asphalt, and granite ‘cobble sette’ borders to create this effect. It's also a nice technique to increase the quality of paving material as the front door is approached. Quality lighting fixtures and design can be used to add another layer of detail to the design and materials chosen for your driveway entry courtyard. This can extend beyond the expected lighting bollards down a driveway to well positioned in-ground LED lights that reinforce the material changes in your driveway design. Once again your lighting can extend beyond function to create genuine entry drama and site ‘theatre’ in the evening. The quality of driveway plantings may be restricted by space limitations, but needn’t lack the same detail and quality to the rest of your property. Choose upright ‘fastigated’ tree forms to create repetitive, patterned, narrow columnar forms. Hedges may also work well in smaller bed widths. Let your driveway plant selection set the scene and give a taste for the plant texture and form visitors can expect in the rest of your property.

AllAn O’lOughlin SculptOr And AlchemiSt Anne Hudson meets Allan O’Loughlin and gives an insight into the artist and his work. Allan O’loughlin comes across as a laid-back individual, unassuming but genuine. He is a fitter welder by trade, a person who fits and makes metal components to create structural forms such as machinery frames, or conveyors. However, O’Loughlin demonstrates through his work that he is primarily an artist who uses the skills learnt in this trade to pursue his creative endeavours. O’Loughlin lives with his partner on a two-acre garden in mandeville, just north of christchurch. Visitors to his garden feel they have walked into the set of Alice in Wonderland, and O’loughlin has made everything on display. this modest artist does not push sales, preferring to let the works speak for themselves. his aim is to master and capture life in his sculpture. Our lawns and gardens are no longer furnished with just the odd wooden bench, or table and chairs. Sculpture in the home garden has become increasingly popular. As New Zealanders, we have always enjoyed displaying original art on our walls and now in our gardens, increasing the demand for well-made beautifully crafted work that can withstand the rigours of the outside environment. O’Loughlin works in metal. his sculpture is not made of

As is, where is ‘As is, where is’ was a term almost unheard of in the Christchurch property market prior to the Canterbury earthquakes. Now it is a sensation that seems to have taken the market by storm. What exactly does it mean? Can you buy a habitable house on Helmores Lane for a pittance of its valued cost? Or are the risks greater than the reward? Carol Hannagan, director at Strategy Law & Mediation Ltd, explains the opportunity and risks of this new phenomenon. The condition of these properties can vary greatly. The properties range from uninhabitable ones in need of demolishing that are simply sold for the land value and other beautiful properties that with determination and the right skillset can be restored to their former glory. The availability of the worst of the properties arises from the assessment of the insurance companies that the particular property is uneconomic to repair. The insurance policy will often state that the property be returned to its pre-quake condition or to an “as new” condition. Often this is simply not economically viable due to subsidence or extensive damage or the need for older properties
to be brought up to the building code requirements. These are the properties frequently classified as “rebuilds”. The habitable properties that are able to be repaired more often than not become available because the insurance company has insisted on settling the claim by paying the owner the value of repairs rather than undertaking to manage the repair. Frequently, the owner has had enough and wishes to move on without having to live through the repair process, or manage that process themselves. what does this mean for a seller or buyer? As a seller, correctly using the “as is, where is” procedure in the advertising campaign and in an

agreement for sale and purchase eliminates the backlash should any faults be discovered with the property prior to or after the sale. Ordinarily a seller has an obligation to disclose all of the problems with the property. The “as is, where is” situation tends to shift the obligation to investigate the faults of the property to the purchaser – “Buyer beware”. As a buyer, this means you are purchasing a property with all the faults you can see, as well as all of the faults you might not be able to see. A careful and thorough due diligence process is essential to assess what repairs are required. ensure that you obtain the correct advice. A buyer will require an engineering report to check the structure of the house and probably a Geotech report to confirm the land designation and foundation design requirements. ensure the seller provides the eQC and insurance scopes of work and the settlement details. A detailed builder’s report is essential together with an estimate of cost so you know what needs to be fixed and how much the whole transaction will cost. The art of the customer experience LYNETTE MCFADDEN GOLD BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN
The world of customer experience is a relatively simple one. Customers or clients want to feel valued, special and supported, and have their requirements met as they were promised, all in a timely and professional manner.
all parties know what they have paid for and what they are getting. Great service radiates off great communication. I’ve been the recipient of wonderful levels of both service and communication in various professional relationships and the reverse as well. Over the years I’ve tried to address scenarios that felt unfair or were clearly not going well, but being able to address potential conflict takes a lot of courage.
That’s the baseline not, as some would think, the epitome of providing great service.
It’s always, always the small things that pre-empt a wake-up call or create a raving fan.
I don’t believe it’s unfair or inappropriate to hope for a great experience as a client and I’m always disappointed when it’s the reverse. I’m also unbearable if I or the business I’m part of has contributed to that disappointment, because it means the ball’s been dropped.
In real estate there are so many areas where a client can feel either crestfallen or elated at the service levels. I know a fee doesn’t occur till there’s a sale, but it’s still critical that the relationship be service-based, full of attention to detail, and customer-not agent-centered. This also goes for a lot of other professions and trades (architects, engineers, take note).
So how do you avoid what I term the ‘wake- up call’ and create the ‘wow’ instead? Professional relationships are often augmented by formal contracts, undertakings and interpretations. This all sounds simple but it’s not: everyone interprets differently and the devil is in the detail. The best way of avoiding any issues is communicating constantly! Make sure
Here’re some of my personal industry wakeup call areas: • Open homes once a week for 30 minutes. Why bother? If you are going to host open homes, three a week for a minimum of 45 minutes should be standard. It’s about the owner and their home, not you!

• Never returning calls. Sorry, you signed up for the job – do the work. • Advertising that features photographs showing more of the driveway than the house. Get creative and find a way to show that property in its best light. • And keys to new properties that get handed over without any sense of celebration or decorum (I’m working on this one as I write). These are all opportunities to add value and magic; the intangible that makes your client feel great. I like little things. The fish and chip shop at Geraldine, it’s always full to the brim serving lemon-flavoured salt and tangy vinegar with the thick chips. Home- grown advice and a massive ‘thank you’ always accompany the packages. Our travel agent who calls before you leave on your trip (to see if you need anything else) and after to see how you fared. The simple act of caring makes you feel valued and that’s the start of a WOW. Don’t open yourself up to a wake-up call. They hurt, they’re expensive and they signal you could do better. And that’s my enduring challenge – do better!

NZ Chefs Culinary Olympics Canterbury Dinner Fancy fare was the target one recent evening as the summer sun blazed adieu beyond the western horizon. Guest were not disappointed, as the aim of the cadre of chefs at this event was true and straight. Drinks and tiny palate sharpeners were proffered in the courtyard, whilst Visions Restaurant awaited the diners. Anthony Harper Wonderful Wizard of Oz Sponsor's VIP Preview Party The fabled yellow brick road wove a trail of fun through the woods by Riccarton House. The epic progress of Dorothy and her dog Toto along that golden highway to the emerald city was told by the young thespians from the Court Theatre's Forge. The delirium became real, as the madness on stage spilled over to infect the imagination and fill eyes of every age with the wonder of fantasy. The burgeoning sunset brought forth long shafts to drench the glade in honeyed light as the story spun on. The Tin Man searched for a heart, the Scarecrow a brain and the Lion his courage, only to find that they possessed them inside all along, such was the magic created on a summer evening at Riccarton.

Over the hill in Governor’s Bay, as the gentlest of breezes teased with a promise of respite from summer’s humidity, guests gathered at Cholmondeley. Recognition for work done, money raised and service provided was given in a ceremony of thanks to those connected with the rebuild of this historic establishment. The party was a time for not only celebration but also reflection and remembrance of past happenings as well as the people, friends of Cholmondeley who by their deeds and presence have left affectionate memories and the place as it stands today, as their legacies.

Wedding Trends for 2016 Wendy Dunlop shares the exciting new wedding trends for 2016 that encompass all aspects of the day from fashion to flowers and food to photography. Vintage and rustic style is still popular but there’s an injection of contemporary chic that captures the best of old and new.
Grooms and Guys
dresses and Tresses
Smart suits can be worn with or without a vest and range from single or double breasted and vented style to modern metro-fit. Black, charcoal and pinstripe remain for formal weddings but shades of navy and light grey are on trend for less formal and contemporary weddings. Tan shoes are ‘in’ and ties are back in vogue.
Bridal gowns feature soft shades of white, cream and blush, floating fabrics and layers of lace. Boho style is romantically informal, there’s the sleek vintage elegance of the 1930s and full skirted ’50s designs on show. Sleeves are ‘in’ and so are boat, sweetheart and illusion necklines. Hairstyles vary from gentle waves and loose up-dos to classic chignons and elaborate braiding. Hair wreaths and sparkling barettes compete with veils this season.
Welcome to Open Thursday to Sunday, 7.30am – 4.00pm.

venues Gardens, gazebos and marquees set the scene for vintage weddings; vineyards and country houses provide rustic style; while resorts, clubs and hotels offer conventional elegance. But ultra-stylish weddings seek museums, cloisters, art galleries, arcades and atriums as wedding venues of unique ambience.
Popular photography now incorporates pre-wedding shots, selfie stations and online video clips while activities have become almost mandatory to keep guests entertained during the wedding photo shoot. Whatever styles or statements you choose to adopt for your wedding, stay true to your own tastes and values, choose locations you can afford and remember that it’s the little details that make it unique.
menus Canapé receptions are being ousted by a return to a modern version of the sit-down dinner with shared platters, gueridon service from a trolley of dishes at each table and wandering desserts so that guests can mingle. The tiered cake has been reinvented flavour with new flavours like salted caramel, apple spice or lemon and lavender, as well as the “naked” cake adorned with fresh fruit or flowers. Among the selection of table wines, rose is centre stage, while cocktails and craft beers are an increasingly popular trend.
Special Occasions • Mother of the Bride or Groom • Bridesmaids, Bridal and Ballgowns • Races • Imported Hats & Fascinators • Exclusive Labels • Shoes, Bags & Jewellery • Sizes 6-24
Flowers Current floral styles favour seasonal flowers with a ‘just picked’ look. Bouquets may feature trailing greenery with vintage roses, peonies and lily of the valley, or simply be a single large bloom like a hydrangea. Flower wands, flower walls and flower chandeliers are all new trends while traditional hair wreaths and corsages are firmly back in fashion.
Colours & Themes Marsala, pistachio, aubergine and saffron are brand new bridesmaid shades while ‘monochroming’ – using one colour in a variety of shades – is the latest decorative trend for flowers, bridal party outfits and venue decorations. Metallics are ‘in’ especially copper or rose gold which features in everything from rings to table settings to wedding invitations. Wedding themes are more personalised to reflect a couple’s special moments or favourite destination.
WEDDINGS Our range of hassle free, all-inclusive wedding packages cater to all your wedding day desires.

Five Tips For surviving Holiday Travel Easter weekend is approaching and all parents worry about the ‘joys’ of flying or travelling with their young children. But fear not, we share our top tips for child-friendly travel. 1. Invest In a trunkI. Trunkis are a lifesaver when you are in long queues, as not only can children sit on them and scoot around, there is also a strap that allows you to pull your child along,
saving their tired little legs if your walk to the departure gate is a long one. 2. Plan your travel actIvItIes. It is well known that children have short attention spans, therefore you need to ensure you have a number of planned activities. Easy and inexpensive tools to pack include a favourite storybook, colouring pens and paper, cards, and a snack box with long-lasting foods such as raisins. Stickers are great for keeping children
entertained for a while – just give them a plain book to decorate. 3. Get a Portable DvD Player or tablet. Without a doubt, the one thing all parents seem to agree on is investing in some sort of technology to keep your children occupied. Before you leave, download some games or apps (make sure to switch it to airplane mode if in flight). 4. Present your chIlD wIth Presents. Wrap up small toys that you can
present to your child as a reward for being good every half hour or so. These don’t have to be expensive and can be as simple as snacks or stickers. It’s best if the present is something that can entertain them for a while! 5. take a PIllow On a flight, small children can sit on a pillow so they can see out of the window, while older children can use a pillow to sleep on. A blanket is also good as its familiarity will comfort your child as well keep them cosy.

Why RegulaR exeRcise is good FoR you With preparation for the City2Surf on many people’s minds, Dr John Hellemans discusses the health benefits of being active and shares some tips on participating in endurance events. Most people start the year with good intentions, which often includes improving personal health and fitness. There is no better way to get your act together than to commit yourself to a sporting event. This incentive forces you into action and is the first step towards transforming your intentions into reality. If you have entered the City2Surf or a similar sporting event for the first time, remember you will not be
the only first-timer there. These events are designed to be fun with the emphasis on participation rather than competition. This means you can do it at a pace that’s comfortable for you. This is a pace that causes you to be slightly out of breath, but still able to have a conversation with whomever you are with. If you are by yourself, talk to yourself as a test (... discreetly!). This speed is comfortable, safe and good
for your health. In training, I suggest you get active every day for 30 minutes plus, or aim to build up to that. Through this you are guaranteed health benefits, not only in regards to preventing heart disease, but you are also lowering your risk for all of the major cancers. Most importantly, it will improve your overall mood. Research has confirmed, beyond doubt, that being inactive is as bad as smoking.

Addressing these four aspects will not only improve your longevity, but ensure you have a much better quality of life. Smoking is considered an addiction, so is exercise. The two don’t go together very well. The effect of one nullifies the effects of the other. Once you have been exercising for a few months it will be hard to give up your exercise. If you are a smoker, I suggest you change a negative addiction (smoking) for a positive one (exercise). You will not regret it. I hear you say, “I don’t like running or walking, so count me out.” Others are physically unable to walk or jog due to ailments or injury. It is my firm belief that there is an activity specifically suited for every individual. You just have to find out what that activity is for you. We have been given muscles for a reason and they need to be used. When I was a GP and advised my patients on exercise it was not unusual
for them to experiment with different types of activities before they decided what they liked best. Walking and jogging versus swimming and biking, dancing, gym-work, kayaking and other activities. Some liked variety and became triathletes. Also, decide if you prefer to exercise by yourself or with a group. The social aspect of exercise can be a great motivator. As long as you use large muscle groups continuously for 30 minutes or more at a steady pace, you are onto a winner. If running is still not for you, look out for other events to get you moving. There are open water swims and bike rides you can enter. Many swimming pools run aqua classes – exercise to music, supported by the medium of water – which are safe, a lot of fun and you get a good workout, too. Or you can join dancing groups or a gym. If the latter appeals, make sure you use the “aerobic” equipment for the majority of the time you are there. By that I mean the treadmill, cross-trainer, rower, stationary bike and similar equipment,
55
which get your heart rate up for a longer period of time. If you choose three of your favourite machines and do 10 minutes on each you will have done your 30 minutes. You can incorporate some light weights before, after, or in between and you have a varied programme and end up with an all-round conditioning programme. I do suggest you ask one of the trainers on the spot to point you in the right direction – not only for how to use the machines but for the techniques you use – so you don’t do yourself an injury. Don’t forget your pace, slightly puffed but still able to have a conversation! If you are over 35 and you have not exercised for a while I suggest that you see your GP for a check-up. He/she will assess your general health and risk factors. If you are compliant with your programme and you go back to see the GP after three months, I can guarantee your health will have improved significantly – a great incentive to continue. This will not be too difficult, however, as by that stage you will be well and truly addicted!

take your taste buds on an exotic culinary journey through Southeast Asia inspired by one family's holiday. Jackie Kearney's Vegan Street Food cookbook explores the tantalising array of meat and dairy-free food favoured by Asian cultures. from Sri Lanka, thailand,Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia, impress your friends and family with classic dishes like Sri Lankan Dal and kale Pakora, to regional delicacies such as vegetable crumpets from South india or Japanese fried tofu with cassava cakes.
1. Soak bamboo skewers in cold water. If using dried chillies, put them in a bowl and cover with hot water and leave to soak for 30 minutes, then squeeze out the excess liquid and chop the chillies. 2. In a large bowl, add the chillies and all the remaining ingredients, except the tofu puffs. Mix well until all the sugar has dissolved. Check the seasoning and add salt to taste. 3. Put the tofu puffs in the bowl and stir to coat in the marinade. Set aside for at least 1 hour or preferably overnight. 4. Preheat the grill to high. Skewer 3 pieces of puff onto each bamboo skewer. Lay the skewers on the prepared baking sheet. Grill, turning occasionally for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Serve two or three skewers per person with a little pot of peanut and cucumber dipping sauce and some Nam Prik Pao (Thai chilli jam) and sticky rice.

DrifT AWAy Situated just minutes from Waimairi Beach, the Beach Café is a breath of fresh air, with its colourful interiors, children’s playground and exceptional food. As of April last year, Beach Café is under new management, and new owners Sasha and Patrick have already made their mark. “We aim to exceed customer expectations,” says café manager Debby, “With excellent service and fantastic staff, to match our fabulous food and amazing coffee.” The Beach Café has a large outdoor patio area and a safe children's play area that is fully fenced. This enables parents to catch up with friends and family for a bite to eat, or glass of wine, knowing their children are in a safe and secure area. The café also offers mothers’ groups on
weekdays to include a coffee, muffin, scone or chocolate brownie for $7.50 with a free fluffy. Bookings are essential and need to be made at least 24 hours in advance. As well as being a child-friendly café, man’s best friend is also welcome at Beach Café, catered for with a full water bowl always readily available. “We have a grass area so the dogs can relax before or after a trip to the beach, or accompany you while you grab a coffee,” says Debby. A new head chef has recently
joined the staff: “Cree, comes from an impressive background working in top hotel kitchens. His food is really impressing our customers,” says Debby. After a morning swim at the beach, indulge with a plate of crushed avocado on sourdough with slow-roasted tomatoes, ricotta and flor de sal. Or pop in for lunch with friends and try the classic beach bun, boasting marinated chicken strips on a toasted baguette with melted brie, salad greens, with a mango pawpaw salsa. The menu offers even more scrumptious options such as the
lamb marinated in Greek spices, tossed through a salad of greens, olives, feta and tomato, or the fresh fish, scallops, mussels, prawns and calamari, cooked in a tomato and saffron base with garlic toast. Not to mention the selection of cakes and slices from the cabinet. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, too. With your children and dogs well catered for and an inticing menu, Beach Café, is a must to visit. Open from 9am to 4pm, seven days a week, with the breakfast menu running from 9am-11.30am, and lunch 11.30am3pm. See you there!

An endless selection The Garden Restaurant is a high-end buffet-style restaurant that offers an exquisite range of dishes, from international Asian selections to local favourites.
Garden Restaurant is a popular destination for locals who love an endless selection of mouth-watering food. Diners appreciate the stylish setting, almost as much as the buffet – always fresh and loaded with tasty offerings. With an extensive variety of dishes, you can pick and choose whatever you feel like at the time, and have as much of it as you want! The selection at Garden Restaurant is never-ending. Dishes include a range of both hot and cold meats, with the hot roast meats being extremely popular. There is a selection of seafood, fresh vegetables, as well as pasta and noddle dishes. The restaurant is open for lunch, from 11.30am to 2pm, and reopens for dinner from 5.30pm8.30pm. The Garden Restaurant is particuarly well known for its dessert selection. On the must-try list is sticky date pudding served with hot custard. Another temptation is the apple pie, a perfect after-dinner treat with the colder weather on its way. The venue also caters for weddings, and has a specially designed bridal area where the service can be held, situated in an idyllic setting on the lawn. The Iris Room overlooks the garden and lawn, and is available for an intimate reception of up to 50 people. For further details on function hire you can contact the function coordinator Yanmin Li, on 03 385 3132.
“Eight of us had dinner here about two weeks ago. We had heard a lot about the restaurant. We found the buffet had lots of variety. Will be back again another time I'm sure!” – Mary, New Brighton

it’s not often that a facelift model arrives with a completely new engineering package. Well, Peugeot has done just that with its new 208. Gone is the old 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine, the 208 for 2016 has a flash new three-cylinder unit which displaces just 1199cc. it also gets a six-speed automatic transmission replacing the old four-speed unit. it’s no surprise to me that Peugeot has gone for the three-potter, it’s been used successfully in some Citroen models in recent years and the two companies are under the same ownership. i’m a great fan of the triple as a concept, for many years my company pool vehicle was a suzuki Alto, and its engine stood out for its honesty and efficiency. Of course, the PSA group’s triple is a lot more refined and powerful than the generation of Alto i was driving on a daily basis, and it gets a useful 81kW and 205nm thanks to turbocharging technology. Bear in mind, too, that the area of peak power and maximum torque are developed wonderfully low in the rev band at 5500rpm and 1500rpm respectively, response to throttle pressure is instant. Peugeot is no stranger to turbochargers, it has been doing it for years with diesel fuel. however, the petrol-fuelled triple is a departure from the norm and a way of staying in touch with the multitude of turbocharged cars which ply today’s market. And, while the performance benefits are huge, the technology is there to enhance economy, the 208 is rated with an amazing 4 litre per 100km/h (69mpg) combined cycle average. during my time with the test car, the trip computer readout was constantly listing around 6.5l/100km (44mpg), helped a lot by a 4.6l/100km (61mpg) cruising figure at 100km/h, the engine turning over very relaxed at 2050rpm. don’t think the 208 wouldn’t hack it at that speed either, the engine is feisty and eager all through the acceleration and momentum process that gets you to the legal limit. As well as it performs, so does it generate its response in a smooth and eager manner. Gone is the loud three-cylinder throb that used to characterise the configuration, there are still harmonics associated with the layout but, by and large, sound levels are even

throughout the rev range. On the highway the 208 cruises quietly and provides a smooth, controlled ride. Peugeot are the past masters of ride quality versus handling capability, and in the 208’s case nothing has changed. The test car was riding on 195/55 x16in Michelin tyres, and even though there isn’t a lot of rubber on the road, grip levels are high. Corner turn-in is direct and body balance over the suspension isn’t sudden. i’m a great fan of fully independent suspension, so i’m pleased to report that the front strut and rear trailing arm system offers freedom of movement and, given the light weight of the car at just 1090kg, its agility is refreshing. The 208 arrives in new Zealand in two specification levels, the test car was the high-spec Allure at $29,990, although if I was a 208 buyer, i’d be looking at saving $3000 and heading for the Active. Both are well specced and get the new-look interior which

characterises the facelift. interestingly, the evaluation car was finished in what Peugeot call textured paint. The dull, matte appearance is a $750 optional extra, but it is interesting in respect that if you run your hand over the car it feels dimpled and, not surprisingly, textured. i like new cars bright and shiny so i don’t know that it would tempt me, but for those who like something a little bit different with their purchase, it is there to consider. Both Peugeot and Citroen have expanded their product line-ups over the last year or so, french brands have become well-priced and offer substantial levels of specification. in recent weeks the 208 Active and Allure have been joined by the 208 GTi and, although i wasn’t able to have an initial drive of that car due to being away, i’m hoping for a drive on my home patch soon. from what i’m hearing it is a car that has desire written all over it. i simply can’t wait.

Recreating the Magic Five years on from the day the cloud of destruction rose above Christchurch and the sun turned to black, the remembrance was of the losses. There was also a joyous note as the rebirth of the Isaac Theatre Royal was celebrated with the launch of Recreating the Magic, the book documenting the renewal of this beloved Canterbury treasure, fought for in past times by many people, including international celebrities. The blood of Christchurch which froze half a decade ago, flowed now, strengthened with the warmth of new vitality as our brave city, bruised, broken, but undefeated, walks to her redemption.

Generation Z – to Sext or not to Sext? that iS the QueStion StyleTV host Andrea Allen gives us her opinion and advice on issues we face parenting in the digital age.
“She wanted to know if I loved her, so I texted her a picture of a dead bird” – Jarod Kintz
Sexting – to send sexually explicit photographs or messages via mobile phone. Sexting is an acceptable action. Sexting comes in as the top concern for New Zealand parents. Vodafone, say the trend has emerged as the most-viewed topic on its digi-parenting.co.nz website. The art of sexting may be a harmless token of play between consenting adults. But is this acceptable for our teenagers? Or dare I say tweenies to participate in? Studies into the science of the typical participants show teenagers use sexting as a replacement for the “sexual act” or a prelude to the event. What happened to the simple act of passing a note to a boy or girl you liked, or getting a friend to let them know? Old-fashioned
ideals maybe, but you know, it was simple. As the mother of three sons, I often contemplate what world they have been born into. Life is very fast paced and we have a general high demand of immediacy. We want it now, not tomorrow. Trust is a priceless commodity between parent and child. We know all we can do is provide them with unconditional love and support. Provide a respectful home and life for them to show empathy and understanding for their fellow beings. So, as we watch our teenagers swag to their rooms we leave them to potentially delve into a word of Cyber Celibacy. The security of a bedroom, provides a fantasy incubator for the Sexting Rollercoaster to begin.
There have been some horrific stories that have surfaced from sexting where predators have taken advantage of the innocent or naïve sender. Lives have been taken out of embarrassment of what has been done. This March here is your challenge. Next time you have your teenager or teenagers (a big high five to you) in your car driving a decent distance – utilise this confined stage to engage in the question of sexting. You may not get an easy answer but at least you have bought the ticket for the rollercoaster ride without the flash of a camera and have your eyes wide open. #keepthatsmileonyourdial
