From the Executive Director
What an extraordinary night! Thank you to all the guests, artists, and sponsors who made our September gala event a fabulous success. It was tremendous to see our community gather in celebration of the YAM and in honor of former director, Donna Forbes. My sincere thanks to everyone who attended and helped make “The Night” a special affair!
During the gala, I was delighted to announce the acquisition of the Donna Forbes Collection into the YAM’s permanent collection. Donna, and her family, generously donated to the YAM artworks that she collected from the leading artists of the region. This incredible gift adds yet another chapter to Donna’s rich history at this institution. Read more on page 12 from Gordon McConnell — Donna’s close friend and colleague — about this significant collection.
As we head into fall, the YAM continues to be full of remarkable exhibitions and engaging programs. We are especially pleased to share two exhibitions — opening in October and November — that celebrate the incredible legacies of Joseph and Miriam Sample. These exhibitions will vary greatly in style, but both demonstrate the love Joe and Miriam shared for the arts and for their community. A preview of these exhibitions can be seen on pages 8 – 9.
In our galleries this October, the YAM will open Not Out of the Woods: New Works and Woodcuts by Gesine Janzen. This exhibition features a new body of work of Gesine Janzen, a talented and accomplished printmaker. I welcome you to join us in the galleries for a talk by the artist on Thursday, October 19. Along with two of our signature special events — Masquerade and WinterFair — this season at the YAM also includes a new, collaborative Dia de los Muertos event on Friday, November 3. Guests of all ages can join in the celebration and enjoy live music from the Mariachis de Colores. Find more information on page 20.
As a museum member, it is your critical support that makes all we do at the YAM possible! As the temperature drops and the leaves change, I hope you will tour our exhibitions, attend a gallery talk, take a new class, and more at the museum in the months ahead. We are grateful for your partnership and participation.
Cheers,
2023
THE NIGHT GALA & ART AUCTION
Sixteen artists from Montana and across the region supported the museum by contributing significant works for live auction at the YAM.
On Saturday, September 9th, guests arrived in elegant attire and enjoyed live music from the Billings Symphony during a cocktail hour featuring passed gourmet appetizers and specialty drinks. Then guests moved upstairs to the Montana Gallery for a seated dinner catered by Scratch Kitchen, followed by the live art auction with auctioneer Maron Hindman.
The Night Gala and Live Art Auction honored Donna Forbes, past Director of the Yellowstone Art Museum. For decades, Donna worked to build the museum into what it is known as today — a leader in the contemporary art scene of the West. Donna’s impact on the arts in Montana has been extraordinary and it was an honor to celebrate Donna with so many of her friends, colleagues, and family members. Guests honored Donna’s groundbreaking work by donating to the Lot 55 Paddle-Raising, including a generous matching gift from Rimrock Subaru. These gifts will go to the care and stewardship of the building, grounds, and permanent collection.
The YAM extends its deepest appreciation to each of the artists who participated in the auction. The museum is grateful to the individual and corporate sponsors who contributed to the fantastic evening, including: The Oakland Companies, Lornel Baker, Eide Bailly LLP, Red Lodge Clay Center, Steve and Jennifer Corning, Jon Lodge and Jane Deschner, Deborah Anspach and Dr. John Hanson, Matthew and Stephanie Stroud, Susan Sullivan and Steve Zabawa, Rocky Mountain College, The Lawrence Lithography Workshop, the Billings Symphony, Hindman Auctions, Kirks’ Grocery, Caramel Cookie Waffles Co., Town & Country Foods, Todd Forsgren, Keeara Rhoades, and Riversage Billings Inn.

Not Out of the Woods: New Works and Woodcuts by
Gesine Janzen
October 19, 2023 – January 21 , 2024 // Charles M. Bair Family Gallery & Northwest Projects Gallery
Sponsors: Lawrence Lithography Workshop, Bev Ross, Nancy Curriden, Sharon Shannon
Janzen is a Professor of Art and Head of Printmaking at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Woodcuts, Janzen’s tradition and muse, connect her to landscapes, places, sensations, and memories—her carved marks create movement and structure, build textures, and express emotions. With her new body of work, Janzen introduces three-dimensional works–large tar paper painting screens and soft sculptures that seemingly tumble out of hand-made books.
In Gesine Janzen’s new body of work, foreboding, sorrow, and dread predominate, and her point of view turns inward. The forest speaks to her of fairytales and mystery, where danger lurks. Children become lost in the woods. The trees breathe and move. Moss grows, dries, and hangs in tangles from branches.
The mystery of what lies within the ecological complexity of a thick deep forest has inspired folk tales and legends for centuries. As a common motif, the woodland road can be treacherous, but there are also helpers on that path, animal guides and good fairies, for example, and it’s up to the traveler to tell good helpers from bad. In this way, the forest is used as a metaphor for trying times.
Gesine Janzen’s artwork has been shown in numerous exhibitions across America. Additionally, her artwork has been published in many professional publications such as Art in Print, and she has been a visiting artist and workshop instructor in Berlin, Germany, and Poznan, Poland. Her artwork is included in numerous corporate and public collections, such as the Hallmark Collection in Kansas City and the Artist/Printmaker Research Collection at the Museum of Texas Tech University. She studied art at Bethel College and at the University of Kansas. In 1998 she received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa. She was a lecturer in printmaking at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and the Kansas City Art Institute and worked as Assistant Printer at the Lawrence Lithography Workshop in Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri for three years.

ART EVOLVED: INTERTWINEd Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition
June 30 – October 22, 2023 // Mildred Sandall Scott Galleries
Sponsors: Linda Shelhamer & Stephen Haraden
The Yellowstone Art Museum is honored to be the opening venue for Art Evolved: Intertwined, SAQA’s global exhibition organized in partnership with the National Basketry Organization.
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.”
Central to the exhibition theme is the continuum where beauty and function blend and diverge in the hands of the contemporary artist. Even when traditional materials such as thread, fabric, wood, reed, and paper are used, these artists combine skill, imagination, and vision to meld their materials into compelling and beautiful art which resonates in today’s world. Following a jury process, twenty-nine artists were invited to participate in this conversation between media to illustrate the continuum between beauty and functionality.
Following the Yellowstone Art Museum, the exhibition will travel to the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Art Museum in LaConner, Washington, and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Opening Celebration
Thursday, November 16 // 5 PM reception.
On October 5, 2023, the museum will open the first exhibition of a two-part celebration honoring artwork gifted to the Yellowstone Art Museum by Joe and Miriam Sample. With a shared enthusiasm for art and civicminded engagement, the husband and wife duo was unstoppable. One might imagine they had a pact to divide and conquer — Miriam, a supporter of the symphony and theater among other non-profit organizations, also served on the Montana Arts Council and Board of the Yellowstone Art Museum. Joe, a legend in Montana’s media landscape and jazz aficionado shared his passion for the arts through his long-running program on Yellowstone Public Radio, Spreadin’ Rhythm Around, and was also an avid art collector.
Miriam and Joe bestowed the Yellowstone Art Museum with their philanthropic spirit and love for the arts for over sixty years. Beginning in 1984 with the acquisition of a vase by Rudy Autio, Miriam continued to gift funds to the museum to purchase artworks from Montana’s leading artists. At the time of her death in 2009, two hundred and twenty-four works had been purchased for the collection. Along with grants from the Montana Cultural Trust, the core of the museum’s collection was formed — one which guides our collecting criteria to this day.
The YAM is thrilled to announce that forty-five works from Joe Sample’s private art collection have recently come into the YAM’s collection through a generous bequest from the Sample Foundation. Joe’s passion for collecting early nineteenthcentury artwork by leading artists encompasses subjects of westward expansion, Plains Indian portraits and life, cowboys, and the vast western landscape. Leading artists of the genre like Joseph Henry Sharp [1859 – 1953], Thomas Moran [1837 – 1926], Charles Marion Russell [1864 – 1926], and Olaf Carl Seltzer [1877 – 1957], among others, are included in this valued collection. The acquisition of these works into the YAM’s collection adds depth to our holdings of artwork created in the early modern art period. As touchstones of traditional Western art, the collection also provides representations of the West to which contemporary artists continue to respond as interpretations of Western art continue to evolve and our perspectives are broadened.

Activating the Surface: Paul Harris
August 3 – October 1, 2023 // Charles M. Bair Family Gallery & Northwest Projects Gallery
Sponsor: Diane Boyer Jerhoff
Through the years, Paul Harris returned to his wax and pigment drawings with subjects ranging from still lifes to abstracts, from figures to landscapes and many more in between. Although known as a sculptor, his go-to medium remained the art crayon.
Harris’s drawings pulsate with energy as the movement he puts into the pieces, etched into the composition, can be felt as much today as the moment they were created. The lines, nearly frantic with color, keep the eye traveling, yes, but they also keep the mind engaged in the images, searching, reaching, in continuous dialogue with the viewer. Harris, always concerned with pattern and texture, understands the spatial relationship inherent in a finite drawing. These pieces, intimate and compelling, relay an accessible, inspirational narrative.
Harris said about his use of crayons, “I remember in sixth grade the teacher wanted a lot of things made that she would use the next year and the next, I didn’t do much work in her class except make these big drawings. I became very accustomed to crayons, and I’ve never been able to let them go. Crayons are still my best friends in making drawings. I don’t think it will ever end.”
This exhibition will also feature bronze sculptures on loan from the Paul Harris and Marguerite Kirk Gallery and an example of Harris’s most known life-size stuffed and upholstered female figures from the permanent collection.
This exhibition is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association (MAGDA), a state-wide service organization for non-profit museums & galleries, and supported in part by grants from the Montana Arts Council, a state agency funded by the State of Montana; coal severance taxes paid based upon coal mined in Montana and deposited in Montana’s Cultural and Aesthetic Projects Trust Fund; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Will James in Magazines
June 2023 – June 2024 // Mildred Sandall Scott Galleries
Sponsor: The Foundation for Montana History
Will James, a French Canadian born as Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault, always dreamed of being a cowboy. James was indoctrinated into the world of ranching at a young age and eventually worked as a hand for cattle outfits in Montana, Idaho, and Nevada. However, several injuries and an Army draft into World War I rerouted the cowboy’s career from one who handled horses into one who observed and recorded them instead.
Cows, horses, and bears were just some of the subjects that James portrayed in his drawings and writings, ones which told of the raw and exhilarating force of nature in the West. The artist’s ability to realistically capture these rare moments gained him a successful career in illustrating images for various Western magazines. His work was featured in several venues, from the cheapest pulp magazine to premier titles like Sunset Magazine and The Saturday Evening Post.
Meanwhile, James practiced storytelling of his own, beginning with his 1920 series “Keno the Cow-Horse,” a forerunner to the chronicling of Smoky. Previews of his books appeared in magazine serial form, and many were later published as full books into the collections from Charles Scribner’s Sons. As he began to concentrate on his novels, less and less appeared in short form, ending this phase of his career in 1935. However, these depictions still provide modern viewers with a unique look at the cowboy and the rancher’s West.

The Donna Forbes Collection
by Gordon McConnell
Although she retired twenty-five years ago, Donna Forbes’ leadership, influence, and legacy continue to be seen and felt in the museum she helped to build.
Between 1974 and 1998, when she served as Executive Director of the Yellowstone Art Center, Donna transformed a modest community art center into an accredited art museum with broad public and financial support, professional staff, dynamic programs and a significant collection of art. In those years, the Art Center outgrew the repurposed County Jail building, necessitating a capital campaign and the design, construction, and definitive naming, in 1998, of the Yellowstone Art Museum. Although many individuals were involved, Donna Forbes was the visionary, hard-working and skillful leader who fit all the pieces together and drove the institution forward.
In 1998, when the new museum building was being completed and Donna’s retirement was approaching, the Trustees and Capital Campaign leadership named the new gallery wing in her honor. Her name is still spelled out there in large, sculptural letters, and her spirit presides over the constantly changing displays in the museum — especially the collection featuring works by many of the region’s foremost artists. Now, the YAM is proud to announce the acquisition of the Donna Forbes Collection to the permanent collection. Her donations enrich the collection with the considerable legacy of this transformational leader and brilliant connoisseur. In 2024, her collection will be publicly exhibited.
According to Donna’s wishes, her sons, Ben and Doug, invited museum staff to review her collection and make selections prior to Donna’s relocation to Seattle last year. I was invited to join the group and share stories and background information. I remembered the artworks and setting vividly from forty years of festive occasions and casual visits with my former boss and dear friend.
Donna was proud of the two-story stucco house, built to her design. As Director, she used her home as an informal annex to the Center, generously sharing with friends, staff, volunteers, and honored guests. Many art-world luminaries and patrons of the museum dined at her table over the years — on buffet style meals she prepared and with homemade pies for dessert! The scope of her hospitality was extraordinary. It was an expression of her total commitment to the museum she was building.
Mos of the artists represented in her collection were eventually acquired by the Art Center. It evolved over the years, but long-term fixtures in the living room included a large landscape by Donna’s great friend and mentor, Isabelle Johnson, and a 1950’s calligraphic abstraction by Bill Stockton, another dear friend. These artists were foundational to the modern art movement in Montana and heavily influenced Donna in her understanding of art and her mission at the Art Center. Living with their paintings gratified her spirit and elevated her understanding of art.

Neltje, Liquid Movement, 1998, Monotype, 88.5 x 30.25 inches, Gift of Donna Forbes, 2023.1.25.
Later acquisitions included younger generations of artists. Donna owned some of Theodore Waddell’s early Angus paintings and an exquisite box construction by Patrick Zentz, another seminal figure in the Montana avant-garde and one-time program coordinator at the Art Center. Rudy Autio, Kurt Weiser, and other ceramic artists were represented, along with works by Russell Chatham, Dennis Voss, Jon Lodge, Jane Waggoner Deschner, Kathryn Schmidt, Sheila Miles, and Robert Royhl. Over the landing on the stairs hung a large, vertical monotype gifted to Donna by the great Wyoming abstract expressionist Neltje.
The works of art Donna Forbes and her family donated will enrich the public collection of the YAM and provide insight into the cultivated private life and refine sensibility of the woman who envisioned the Montana Collection and the Yellowstone Art Museum, and inspired others to help her build them. She gave a substantial portion of her life to this institution, as well as the community and state it serves. Now, she has given us a collection of the art that she valued, and which inspired much of what she accomplished.
