COVER ART: Seeking The Moment, Mixed media on canvas by Michel Desroches

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” -Søren Kierkegaard

I want to thank the Billings community for a fantastic first year. It is hard to believe it has flown by so quickly. In reflection, I came across Kierkegaard’s quote, and while it is important to understand the past, we truly must live focused forward. Our future, as we say time and time again, depends upon our patrons. We thank all of you for your continued generosity, attendance at programs, and exhibitions, and your feedback as we plan into the future. We have several new staff members that we hope you will get to know as we continue to bring you outstanding exhibitions and programs. Speaking of our YAM team, it is during this time of year that we say thank you to our many volunteers, especially on the heels of another successful Yellowstone Art Auction. National Volunteer Appreciation week is April 7-13. Sometimes we do not say thank you enough, so if you volunteered this past year, we are truly appreciative! We could not do what we do without all of you. As we continue forward, we are pleased to continue our collaborations and partnership across our community. You may have noticed our recent movie series in partnership with the MINT Film Festival. We will jointly host a Master Class with the Billings Symphony Orchestra in April, and we will partner with the Montana Audubon Center this summer in conjunction with Clyde Butcher’s exhibition. One of our newest undertakings includes absorbing Sally McIntosh’s Summer Art Academy located on the campus of Rocky Mountain College, now in its 19th season. We are working with Sally to take on this endeavor in order to continue this great art opportunity for our youth for many years ahead. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Thursday night date night events and expanded weekend arts education programs and activities. In lookng forward, another big change is Summerfair 41 at Rimrock Mall. We had numerous conversations about relocating this annual event, and the benefits of moving it prevailed. We look forward to seeing you there, on the grounds of the mall. There are many ways you can assist with the planning as well as volunteering during the event. Check out or website for details on how you may apply as an artist or sign up for a volunteer shift. On behalf of the board of trustees, staff, and volunteers, we are grateful to have you involved with the YAM. Your membership, sponsorship, patronage, and/or volunteerism remains essential to our success. Remember to visit often and to bring your friends…enjoy!

Between the lines: Michel Desroches March 15 - July 7 // Montana Gallery

^ In Motion, Mixed Media Painting by Michel Desroches ^

Characterized by quick gestural lines and intense colors, Michel Desroches' images of faces are not meant to be portraits. Rather, his paintings express complex emotions, hopes, dreams, and other intangible concepts. This series was inspired by his work as an art therapist, studying the patients’ features as they worked through intense emotional turmoil. Title Sponsor

^ Hymn to the Living, Mixed Media Painting by Sharon Kagan ^

Multi-disciplinary artist Sharon Kagan’s artwork reflects the profoundly felt character of her life that is interwoven with the history of the 20th century’s darker moments—but is transcended by a brighter wisdom that prevailed. Her recent drawings and paintings on canvas have introduced color and pattern into the enlarged images, to achieve the artist’s intention, “I am working to make the eyes dance.”

50 years in the making, Clyde Butcher’s exhibition is a collective treasure of nature’s landscapes from our bountiful national parks. Included in this exhibition are other areas of beauty to be displayed and enjoyed by all. Butcher’s exhibition shows his passion for nature, the story of love for our country and its landscapes. His images serve as ambassadors that speak on behalf of these landscapes themselves. Released to coincide with the observance of the National Park Service’s Centennial, this collection of some of Clyde’s best images help us to celebrate our awesome national heritage, our national parks, and the places that really do tell the story of who we are and who we will continue to be in perpetuity. This show will feature gorgeous imagery of Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park, not previously exhibited with this traveling show. Welcome to the YAM's new curator The Yellowstone Art Museum welcomes Susan Barnett of Erie, Pennsylvania, as the new Curator. “We are pleased to hire Susan after a lengthy national search and we are happy to announce that this is a homecoming for her,” stated Bryan W. Knicely. Although she spent the past 16 years in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, Montana is still the place she calls home. Barnett discovered her passion for curatorial work as a student at Montana State University in Bozeman. After earning her BA in Fine Art–Printmaking, she was hired as Director and Curator of Anaconda’s Copper Village Museum and Art Center. She founded and managed a gallery in Butte for 14 years and then moved to Wisconsin. There, she served as Executive Director and Curator for the Cedarburg Cultural Center, managed a private art collection, and worked on an exhibition and publication commemorating 40 years of the Kohler Arts/Industry program. Since 2017, as Curator of the Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania, she has organized more than 20 exhibitions and cared for a collection of 8,000 objects. Barnett earned an MA in Art History and a Certificate in Museum Studies from UWMilwaukee. Her research areas include contemporary art, studio craft, American art and history, and non-Western art. “The mission of the Yellowstone Art Museum resonates with my appreciation of art both as a historic document that reflects a community and the social glue that binds it,” Barnett stated. “The Yellowstone Art Museum not only ‘exhibits, interprets, collects, and preserves art’ but strives to achieve ‘enrichment, education, inspiration, and enjoyment’ for all. This requires a commitment to welcoming people of all backgrounds, connecting programming with curriculum and funding, engaging people who don’t think art is for them, breaking down perceptions of elitism, and making exhibitions both scholarly and fun. I look forward to the challenge.” An avocational cellist and photographer, Barnett has performed in numerous symphonies, sung with choral groups, and served on the boards of various arts organizations. She has also juried art exhibitions and served on grants review panels. YAM’s Board President Paul Cox stated, “We are delighted that Susan will lead the curatorial team as we continue to plan the future of the museum. Her background and knowledge of artists, will be an asset going forward.”

The YAM is happy to showcase work from local and regional, contemporary artists in our Art Collector’s Corner. These artists range from well-known and established Montana mainstays to brand new yet-to-be known artists creating and selling their goods. The goal of the Art Collector’s Corner is to offer work that changes quarterly in order to provide a price point that can work with every patron's budget. Make sure to stop in during your next visit to find that perfect one-of-a-kind gift!

Stop by the YAM for dinner and a movie: Raven’s Café d’Art will be serving small plates starting at 4 pm, the screening will start promptly at 6:30 pm. Looking carefully at his so-called Blue Period and Rose Period, the film takes us all the way back to 1907, and the creation of a critical painting in the history of art—Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Though Picasso was merely 25 years old, his painting shocked the art world and changed it irrevocably.
