“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” -Melody Beattie

I want to thank the Billings community for a fantastic first year. It is hard to believe it has flown by so quickly. In reflection, I came across Kierkegaard’s quote, and while it is important to understand the past, we truly must live focused forward. Our future, as we say time and time again, depends upon our patrons. We thank all of you for your continued generosity, attendance at programs and exhibitions, and your feedback as we plan into the future. We have several new staff members that we hope you will get to know as we continue to bring you outstanding exhibitions and programs. Speaking of our YAM team, it is during this time of year that we say thank you to our many volunteers, especially on the heels of another successful Yellowstone Art Auction. National Volunteer Appreciation week is April 7-13. Sometimes we do not say thank you enough, so if you volunteered this past year, we are truly appreciative! We could not do what we do without all of you. As we continue forward, we are pleased to continue our collaborations and partnership across our community. You may have noticed our recent movie series in partnership with the MINT Film Festival. We will jointly host a Master Class with the Billings Symphony Orchestra in April, and we will partner with the Montana Audubon Center this summer in conjunction with Clyde Butcher’s exhibition. One of our newest undertakings includes absorbing Sally McIntosh’s Summer Art Academy located on the campus of Rocky Mountain College, now in its 19th season.”. We are working with Sally to take on this endeavor in order to continue this great art opportunity for our youth for many years ahead. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Thursday night date night events and expanded weekend arts education programs and activities. In living forward, another big change is Summerfair 41 at Rimrock Mall. We had numerous conversations about relocating this annual event, and the benefits of moving it prevailed. We look forward to seeing you there, on the grounds of the mall. There are many ways you can assist with the planning as well as volunteering during the event. Check out or website for details on how you may apply as an artist or sign up for a volunteer shift. On behalf of the board of trustees, staff, and volunteers, we are grateful to have you involved with the YAM. Your membership, sponsorship, patronage, and/or volunteerism remains essential to our success. Remember to visit often and to bring your friends…enjoy!

string theory: mixed med March 21 - July 7 // Bair Family Gallery

The intensely expressive artwork of Michel T. Desroches arises from the artist’s desire to communicate and represent that which has no physical form. Desroches’ paintings are visibly faces, they are not portraits of people but rather visages of hopes, dreams, emotions, and other ephemeral concepts. Desroches’ desire to portray intense emotions originated largely from his work as an Art Therapist with people suffering from mental and emotional illness. In their faces, he often saw a rapid cacophony of intense naked emotion, both simple and complex, as well as the simultaneous dichotomy of suffering and strength exposed in their countenances. Born in 1970, Michel T. Desroches is a native of Montreal, Canada. He began his artistic career as a self-taught artist, later pursuing a degree at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He has participated in more than two dozen exhibitions since first showing his work to the public in 2007, and on December 2017, presented his work at the Louvre in Paris, France as part of the prestigious Salon des Beaux Arts.

The YAM is happy to showcase work from local and regional, contemporary artists in our Art Collector’s Corner. These artists range from well-known and established Montana mainstays like Neil Jussila to brand new yet-to-be known artists creating and selling their goods. The goal of the Art Collector’s Corner is to offer work that changes daily in order to provide a price point that can work with every visitor’s budget. Make sure to stop in during your next visit to find that perfect one of a kind gift!

The YAM welcomes its newest artist in residence: Ben Pease Ben Pease is the 15th Gary and Melissa Oakland Artist-in Residence at the YAM’s Visible Vault. Ben states, “I was born in 1989 and raised on the Crow Reservation. Throughout my life, I've tried to soak up as much cultural, societal, and traditional aspects of what it means to be an aboriginal from North America in the whirlwind of today. I find my definition of being Native to this land as an interpersonal physical and spiritual relationship which is connected to all surrounding entities, beings, organisms, and geological features. I have been practicing as a professional Native Artist for almost 4 years around the country. My work and process are currently evolving, for the more I learn, the less I know. I've recently crossed paths with self-appointed task of narrating the Aboriginal struggles and aesthetics through my personal interpretation. Whether my art focuses upon statements drawn from the aspect of an activist or based on cultural recording, I feel the need to educate and speak volumes. I will continue my transition from a so-called "Rez-Kid" to a culturally rich Contemporary Storyteller.
