Support YAM Art Education 2022 This year, as part of Yellowstone Art Auction 54, you can donate online in direct support of YAM art education! Proceeds fund the YAM Education Department’s goal of consistent, high quality art education for the children and adults we reach every year. Thanks to your generosity, we have been teaching art in Billings and communities throughout the region for almost 50 years. We continue to teach online and to small and safe groups at the YAM. Scan the QR code or visit the Yellowstone Art Auction website at artmuseum.org/engage/yellowstone-art-auction and click the donate to education button and select children's or adult education.

Thank you to all our generous supporters of aRTS education. Your donations enable us to teach art at the YAM, in schools, and online.

Yellowstone Art Auction 54

Welcome Dear Friends of the YAM, Welcome to the 54th Annual Art Auction at the Yellowstone Art Museum! We are excited to return the galleries for the auction celebrations and to honor the work of talented local and regional artists. The 2022 events kick off with an Opening Reception at the Museum on January 28. In addition to viewing the artworks in the auction, attendees will enjoy live music, hors d’oeuvres, and quick finish artworks by Keely Perkins, Tandy Miles Riddle, Judd Thompson, and Kara Tripp. As the new director, this will be my first event at the YAM, and I hope to meet many of you in-person that evening! After this event, we encourage you to visit the galleries often to enjoy the exhibition of auction artworks, as well as bid on the pieces you love most. Over 90 artists have works in the auction. Again this year, bidding will take place online. Participants near and far can access the user-friendly online platform by visiting the Museum’s website. The exhibition and auction will close on March 5 with a celebratory brunch reception. Patrons can make final bids, as well as meet and thank the artists. Tickets can be purchased online through the Museum’s website. As a Museum, we are deeply grateful to the artists who contributed their time and talent to support the YAM’s fundraising efforts. We could not have this event without their generosity! I also want to thank the jurors and committee members who selected the works displayed in this exciting exhibition, along with the YAM Board of Trustees, and volunteers who supported the exhibition. I especially want to thank the hard-working staff members who coordinated both the exhibition and accompanying events. The Yellowstone Art Auction continues to be the Museum’s largest annual fundraiser. Your support means more to the YAM now than ever and participating as a bidder funds the exhibitions and education programs hosted by the Museum all year long. Your purchase shares the gift of art with the entire Billings community. Thank YOU for helping us make this an extraordinary celebration of art in Montana!

Jessica Kay Ruhle

QUICK FINISH artists OPENING RECEPTION | Friday, January 28, 5:30 – 8 p.m. Keely Perkins LOT 55 Miles City, Montana “I am a painter by heart and a potter by accident. I use underglazes to paint on porcelain vessels I have thrown. Bright colors, finned, furry and feathery animals are my subjects of choice. Growing up in eastern Montana I truly value the beauty of the animals I see almost daily and want to bring them onto my work.“

Tandy Miles Riddle LOT 56 Livingston, Montana “I paint and draw very directly. At some point in each piece the marks seem to have autonomy. At its best, the experience is full of discovery and delight. I feel like this could be true for everyone. I see the process of painting as sharing a personal roadmap to joy."

Judd Thompson LOT 57 Billings, Montana Born in 1983, Judd Thompson spent his formative years growing up on the Crow Indian Reservation, gaining inspiration from the art he was surrounded by in his parents' business, The Custer Battlefield Trading Post. Judd draws inspiration from Western artists, especially Joseph Henry Sharp. Judd uses his passion for color theory to capture the essence of Crow Country in a variety of media. After graduating from the University of Wyoming in 2010 with a degree in Art & Art History, Judd moved to Billings, MT where he currently resides.

Kara Tripp LOT 58 Bozeman, Montana “My shift to painting solely with a palette knife was born out of frustration. The widening gap between my art “vision” and my art “reality” compelled me to re-think my process. The palette-knife approach liberated me from my fixation with minuscule details and ultimately, resulted in the impressionistic style of my current work. Sculptural and bold knife markings are now my trademark, and my paintings are often described as resembling mosaic or collage. The bands of color the knife pulls through to the surface add variation and an energy I was unable to achieve with a brush. My technique lends a contemporary twist to traditional Western themes. As a native Montanan, my favorite subjects include bison, pheasant & foxes.” 3
