Upcoming exhibitons NELTJE: DIALOGUE OF MY MIND MARCH 14 - MAY 17, 2020

Neltje’s paintings are intense, complex, and larger than life. In her late 30s, Neltje began her excursion into the discipline of Sumi-e painting. That practice became the core of her later work. [She works in series.] Neltje often starts a painting with a gesture Neltje, Threatened, 2017 acrylic on canvas 60 x 108 in of bold color and works in a counterclockwise pattern. Her dynamic process of painting changes between quick, expressive physical movements and intense deliberation. Colors sing like musical notes. Major chords of primary colors contrast with minor grays. The marks are rhythmic and pulsing. Yellows blare like trumpets, structured by bass notes of blue and black. This exhibition features mainly paintings completed in 2017 and 2018. Dialogue of My Mind is Neltje’s first figurative series, which she painted following the 2016 election. The first painting, Threatened, surprised her with its specificity. The Capitol Building is depicted on the left; faces and hands, including a man with yellow hair, are scattered across a field of blue. Her series of expressive faces imagines people affected by the rapidly changing political landscape: shocked, fragmented, and disconnected.

NELTJE: TELL ME, WHY FLOWERS? MARCH 21 - JULY 12, 2020

Neltje finds a source of energy as well as solace in nature’s beauty. Tell Me, Why Flowers? is a series of lyrical abstractions linked like a musical “theme and variations." Inspired by the end-of-season explosion of color in her late-summer gardens, Tell Me, Why Flowers? evokes the spectacular, but fleeting, joys of life. Unlike traditional still-life flower paintings, these works do not represent physical likenesses nor present moral lessons. Neltje’s colors and patterns reflect the life and abundance she feels in the presence of nature. The exhibition features a painting of the same title, which at 10’ x 30’ fills an entire gallery wall. This and four other monumental paintings representing the four seasons offer an experience of sublime beauty that envelops, overwhelms, and ultimately cradles the viewer. Neltje has had numerous group and solo exhibitions, including a major solo exhibition at the University of Wyoming in 2013. In 2005, she received the Wyoming Governor’s Art Award.

I am an Austin based Australian artist with a passion for conservation, a fact that is reflected not only in my dedication to continuing classical artistic traditions, but also in my focus on featuring people, animals and insects in all their majesty. I often work in pen and ink, one stroke at a time, but also enjoy the fluidity of charcoal, oil paint and watercolour.

3 Harry Koyama Billings, Montana

Undercurrent, 2019 oil on board, 12” x 36”

Estimated Value: $2,400$3,600

In my paintings I depict a mood or a feeling that signifies the essence of the subject of the work. Whether it is a lazy grizzly bear strolling in the woods or the mighty bison on the plains, the mood of the painting is portrayed as simply as possible through the use of bold color and deliberate strokes of paint.

The Rims Edge, 2019 oil on board, 48” x 24”

Estimated Value: $2,400-$3,600

I like what the artist Michael Tyzack said: “We are not wild enough to be a part of Nature, and we are not independent enough to be separate from Nature” so we need art to ameliorate that conflict.

Ben, 2019

9 Penny Jenkins

Stevensville, Montana

Patchwork Blanket, 2019 fused glass, 2” x 32.5” x 15”

Estimated Value: $2,800-$4,200

My first recollection of creating art is a watercolor of a robin in a tree that I painted in the third grade. In high school and college, I took numerous courses in drawing, painting and silversmithing and I’ve sold my jewelry in boutiques from Kansas to Montana since 1975. In 2000, on a trip home to Kansas, I spent the afternoon in a glass artist's studio learning about the wonders of glass fusing. I fell in love with this medium and it has been my passion ever since.

Yellowstone Art Auction 52

10 Nyd Kraushaar Billings, Montana

Beep Beep, 2019

alcohol ink on yupo paper, 23.75” x 60”

Estimated Value: $2,640-$3,960

Color is my passion! Bright, rich, deep colors. Colors that indicate fury, uncertainty, pain, power, love, hate, balance, insecurities, and everything over, under, and around. Colors bring out memories in me. Some are welcomed and others burn with crimson. When I painted Beep Beep, it was a heavy day. When I finished it, I knew it had to have something fun and light in it. Now I don’t see the heaviness, I see two people on an adventure. That adventure is for you to create in your mind. I hope you enjoy Beep Beep.

11 Brenda Wolf

Great Falls, Montana

Clive, 2018

soft pastel on canvas, 40” x 32”

Estimated Value: $2,880-$4,320

My work is filled with an expressive visual connection to the animal kingdom, both subtle and strong. My paintings drive me to continually dive deeper into my feelings and experiences. Each painting captures a distinct animal personality. No two are ever alike, thus each has his or her own name. These animal paintings want to be acknowledged as individuals and have something to say to both me and the audience.

12 Mai Wyn Schantz Denver, Colorado

Shelter, 2019

oil on stainless steel, 36” x 60”

Estimated Value: $4,000-$6,000

I’ve been painting on metal, first aluminum and now stainless steel, for 20 years. Initially drawn to the material because of its slickness as a painting surface, I soon recognized it as a means to capture nature in a contemporary context. By exposing areas of the raw metal substrate, a unique juxtaposition results between the industrial material and my nature-based subject matter. Despite our high tech, modern world we are still innately tied to the land. My paintings are about this relationship. They are an exploration of our evolving and often tenuous union with nature as well as our inherent desire to stay connected to it. My paintings seek out beauty and balance in the unification of these two seeming opposites.

Live Auction

13 Tom Benedict

Three Forks, Montana

Torchwood, 2018

rocky mountain juniper wood on stone base, 70” x 24” x 20”

Estimated Value: $4,000-$6,000

For centuries, the harshest elements of nature have shaped my selected medium. In the wilds of Montana, the twisted wood of the Rocky Mountain Juniper tree evokes a sense of tortured endurance. To travel through a twisted juniper grove, viewing these ancient trees, is an exercise in humility. These old, dead trees saw the world change around them and lost the tug-of-war with nature somewhere along the way. As I see it, my job as a sculptor is to collect the most compelling subjects and tell the story contained within the wood. I let the wood speak to me as I carve, following the natural flow of each piece. Carving and sanding transform the wood, bringing to light a majestic presence that has not been seen in ages. By doing this, I hope to bring the tree back to life in a new form and for a new audience. My goal for a finished work is for its viewers to feel the same sense of fascination, beauty, and humility that I do while viewing live juniper trees in the wild.

14 Tyler Murphy Billings, Montana

Horses of ‘89, 2018 oil on linen, 30” x 60”

Estimated Value: $3,600-$5,400

Cowboys, their horses and cattle, and their Montana landscape hold a special place in my life. Their story is the greatest inspiration for my art.

15 Peggy Kelly (1935–2018)

Benny and Red, 2000 oil on canvas, 40” x 60”

Estimated Value: $4,000-$6,000

Before digital photography, a roll of film came back from the processor a few days or weeks later. In between the “good” pictures, were the photographs with blinking eyes, open mouths, turned backs, and not-quite-right exposures. These are the photos that inspired Kelley’s work. The YAM recently accessioned more than 30 of her drawings and paintings into the permanent collection.

16 Karen Garre

Livingston, Montana

Hayfields, 2019

acrylic on canvas, 40” x 30”

Estimated Value: $3,200-$4,800

In this series of paintings I’m using color to determine light and shadow. Each painting starts with a red/orange underpainting which shows through in selected areas. Each and every stroke of paint not only indicates the light, but also the shape of the subject.

17 Josh DeWeese

Bozeman, Montana

Large Covered Jar, 2014 ceramic, 26” x 20” x 21”

Estimated Value: $2,800-$4,200

I work with the art of pottery. The jar is a familiar form that has been explored throughout the ages. I see it as an expression of warmth and generosity, and an object that helps create a sense of home. It is a painting in the round. I’m drawn to the beauty and mystery of high temperature ceramics and the element of chance that occurs in the firing, in the subtle qualities of raw clays and the vibrant depths of a transparent glaze. I have a passion for painting with ceramic materials on a three-dimensional form, and having the rhythm of the pattern unfold as it moves around the pot. I enjoy the phenomenon of the melt and the quality of color and depth that develops through the glaze. The loss of control is important, blurring the initial pattern made with the hand. The viscosity, depth, and movement of the glaze are important elements in the final surface.

18 Rudy Autio (1926-2007)

Wings, 1981

acrylic on paper, 30” x 23”

Estimated Value: $2,960-$4,440

Rudy Autio was born in Butte to an immigrant couple from Finland, was one of the most masterful artists in clay in the US. He was a founding director of the Archie Bray Foundation and started the ceramics program at University of Montana, winning many international awards.

old timbers, barbed wire, 8’ x 2’ x 2’

Estimated Value: $7,120-$10,680

An old shot up piece of timber, barbed wire buried beneath the earth covered in moss, burnt trees that stand without branches whistling in the wind, or a rusty old nail. These are my treasures to transform. I wallow in the wild. Wild places and wild minds. Because there lies the best lessons, and the fuel for the fire.

Banner, Wyoming

Parallel Lives I, 2018

monotype with pastel on paper, 30” x 44”

Estimated Value: $1,600-$2,400

My passion is color. I paint my emotional response to nature.

21 Brad Rude

Walla Walla, Washington

The Same Yet Different, 2015 cast bronze, 11.5” x 15” x 6”

Estimated Value: $5,440-$8,160

I am a storyteller. I spin tales that require imagination and curiosity in my bronze sculptures. I portray animals in situations that mimic our own lives, whether at crossroads, or the interplay of the familiar with the unfamiliar. The animals stand in for us. I often explore ideas about movement, the foundation for the Journey of Life. I use analogies and metaphors to help viewers identify with various animal characters and see themselves, perhaps saying, "I’ve been there before" or "I wish I could do that." I also choose non-animal images to help compose my stories.

22 Robert Mars

Redding, Connecticut

Get Lucky, 2017

mixed media and collage on wood panel with uv varnish, 30” x 30”

Estimated Value: $6,000-$9,000

Chronicling a fascination with 1950s and 60s iconography, Robert Mars creates artwork from his studio in Connecticut that celebrates both the commonplace objects and spectacular icons of an America long past and how they remain relevant in todays’ society. Although looking to the past, his artwork reflects a thoroughly modern vision, presented in an exquisitely constructed manner. His eye for a distinct facet of American history is impeccable, and his ability to manipulate both the color and wordplay of vintage printed material has earned him reference with the likes of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Richard Diebenkorn, among other masters from the School of Pop. Taking inspiration from the Golden Age of American popular culture and celebrating figures of the 1950s and 60s, the past is always present.

gesso, inks, pastel and oil paint on rives bfk paper, 22” x 30”

My new work is about the transformations and renewals that take place constantly in nature. The world is full of blooms and voids and our paths through this world are full of wonder and mystery.

24 Chuck Middlekauff Austin, Texas

Homeland Security, 2019

mixed media on paper mounted on canvas, 40” x 30”

Estimated Value: $2,840-$4,260

Growing up in the 50s and 60s, watching cartoons, westerns, and superheroes on TV, and road trips across America have driven me to paint signs, diners, cowboys, gas pumps, etc. These icons, further inspired by pop art and classic rock and roll, are the focus of my artistic journey.

25 Michael Haykin Tucson, Arizona

Game Face, 2018 oil on canvas, 36” x 36”

My paintings explore the relationships between imagery of language and/or human markings. Often included are elements of nature, and they are usually autobiographical.

26 Sandra Dal Poggetto Helena, Montana

Relict No. 10, 2017 oil on canvas, 12” x 12”

Estimated Value: $1,440-$2,160

Painting is the medium through which I formalize the experience of landscape.

27 Gerit Grimm

Madison, Wisconsin

Cupid, 2010

porcelain, 14” x 8” x 12”

Estimated Value: $1,600-$2,400

My work appropriates historical narrative subjects deriving from fables and myths. It interprets them in forms that have visual and conceptual affinities with contemporary fine art— affinities that allow me to further explore and question the boundaries between pop art, kitsch, and high art.

28 Jane Waggoner Deschner Billings, Montana

Snapshots, school pictures. We save them in albums, frames and drawers. There is a richness in everyday photos whether or not we know the person, place, or time. By engaging viewers with other people’s family photos, I transform their experience of looking at photographs and alter the way they see their own.

29 Sheila Miles

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Up North, 2019

oil on canvas, 34” x 40”

Estimated Value: $2,960-$4,440

Every day I go into my studio and paint from one of the 49,000 photos I have saved to my phone. My art is about ideas like temperature, how close is too close?, composition, texture, friction, and are there halos around things? I also think about how realistic does something have to be? How can I be clearer? and narratives about isolation, privacy, concealment, and identity. My best work is always an experiment and my most creative work comes from having to solve a problem. I paint things to see why I want to paint them, if I can paint them, or to try something new.

30 Rede Ballard Gillette, Wyoming

Falls Burning, 2019

acrylic on canvas, 48” x 36”

Estimated Value: $5,440-$8,160

The concepts behind what constructs and perceptions go into reality fascinate me endlessly. How and why we perceive reality in space and time the way we do is forever a mystery. No better a place to explore it than on a river in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

31 Dave Thomas Eagle, Idaho

(Walks with Kate) River Ruckus, 2017 mixed media on yupo paper, 24” x 30”

Estimated Value: $3,040-$4,560

I start a new painting and work without thinking about other art, but I do think about my life and my surroundings…water, trees, mountains, sky, snow. Expressing my feelings; not illustrating them. It’s like a miracle when I think I’m done with a painting, never sure though until the next day, and then there is the aging process of a month or so to know for sure. The more void I am from the the work the better. It is like wondering into a forest that you have never been in before.

Yellowstone Art Auction 52

32 Amanda Wilner Corvallis, Montana

Red Stag, 2019

oil and metal leaf on canvas, 48” x 36”

Estimated Value: $3,360-$5,040

I am interested in our connection to the animal and natural word. I want to explore a truth about our relationship to it by creating work that conveys both the vulnerability and power of the subjects. “There is a sculpture-like essence to her paintings: a singularity and a completeness. It’s as if Wilner has painted the sides and the back of the piece although no one can see it.” –Michele Corriel

33 Dawn Ness

Billings, Montana

Wild Fire, 2019

oil on canvas, 24” x 18”

Estimated Value: $3,400-$5,100

I am a self taught, horse-crazy artist, grateful for an abundance amount of support in my creative adventure. I was born with a crayon in my hand and horses on my mind. I use a variety of mediums that include watercolor, oil, charcoal, acrylic, and graphite. My style has a wide range to suit the mood of each unique piece. People ask, “Where do you get your inspiration?” Its different every time. It’s been a sunrise, a song, a memory, and a vision. One constant is that my heart and mind collaborate to lead my hand to express those feelings onto the paper or canvas. One of the most memorable compliments I received was from a client who said “I’ve got to have that painting! I feel like that horse is looking right into my soul.” I asked if he was an equine and art enthusiast and he replied, “No, but I am now.” I create out of love and I love what that can create!

34 Gregory Wilhelmi Roundup, Montana

Afternoon at the Babcock, 2019 oil on canvas, 22” x 42”

Estimated Value: $3,120-$4,680

I try to use my talent as an artist to say something about who we are, who we think we are, where we have been, and where we hope we are going.

38 Russell Chatham (1939–2019)

Start of Winter,

Lithograph, 29.5” x 25.5”

Estimated Value: $1,600-$2,400

Now and then an artist creates work so iconic that it defines the identity of a place. In the Paradise Valley on a hazy day you might hear, "It's a Russell Chatham day." Russell Chatham was known for his moody Montana landscapes. The painter, printmaker, writer, and fly-fisherman left his mark on American art and the West when he passed away at age 80 on November 10, 2019. In a special memorial exhibition, the YAM will display selections of Chatham’s paintings and lithograph prints from the permanent collection.

Billings, Montana

Sundays with Bach–A Seed, 2019 mixed media on canvas, 30” x 23”

Estimated Value: $3,760-$5,640

The place of my upbringing – in a Finnish household – was Butte, Montana. Vietnam led to being awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, and, following a teaching career for over forty years at MSUB; the honor of a title – i.e., Professor Emeritus of Art was granted. What I want people to take away from my work is a feeling of life – i.e., a sensation of being, Imaginatively, alive in the moment.

40 Clyde Butcher Venice, Florida

Antelope Canyon 1, 2013

selenium toned silver gelatin photograph, 21.25” x 17.25”

Estimated Value: $1,276-$1,914

Clyde Butcher is known as an icon, an ambassador of the Everglades. His powerful black and white photographs explore his personal bond with the environment. The exquisite beauty and depth of his work draw the viewer into a relationship with nature. For more than 50 years, he has been preserving on film the untouched areas of the landscape. His images are primarily captured with an 8” x 10”, 11” x 14”, or 12” x 20” view camera. The large format camera allows him to express the elaborate detail and textures that distinguish the intricacy of the landscape. Clyde’s large-scale mural photographs enable viewers to experience the artwork rather than simply the photographs. "My hope is to educate" he says, "to let people know our land is a special place and to inspire others to work together to save nature’s places of spiritual sanctuary for future generations."

44 Rudi Broschofsky Portland, Oregon

Sitting Bull, 2019

spray paint on deep edged panel with resin, 48” x 36”

Estimated Value: $3,400-$5,100

Situated somewhere between representation and abstraction sit the mesmerizing works of artist Rudi Broschofsky. Broschofsky takes a Street Art approach to Western Art making him completely unique to both genres. Hand-cut stencil and spray paint are his medium while his subject matter is Western history and landscapes. His painstaking process involves creating meticulous stencils with an X-Acto knife. A typical stencil may take 120 hours to create and sometimes may only be used once. Nearby, his subject matter is nonrepresentational but with distance the composition becomes unmistakable. His work may be found at Modern West Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Rare Gallery in Jackson Hole and Broschofsky Galleries in Sun Valley, ID.

45 Echo Ukrainetz Great Falls, Montana

Chaiwa, Tewa, 2018 batik on cloth, 20” x 16”

I work in fine art batik, a challenging and unpredictable medium. Each piece motivates me to try something new. The colors and shapes created by this unique process are fascinating. My life as an artist is an incredible journey and more exciting than I could have ever imagined.

46 Paige Bowman Savage, Montana

Tucson Run, 2019 glass, 11” x 12” x 12”

Estimated Value: $3,200-$4,800

Paige Bowman itches with creativity. She experiments playfully with warm glass techniques, infusing each piece with her love of color and sense of humor. She steps into the studio each day asking, “What if…” and lets that lead her into the next piece. It is the act of trying something new that excites her, to prove that she can make something better than the day before. In the past she was a porcelain doll maker, a beader, and now she is teaching herself the magic of warm glass. She takes her inspiration from the natural world, the novel, and the surprising.

pear wood and gold leaf, 26.5” x 20” x 20”

Estimated Value: $4,480-$6,720

As a three-dimensional artist, my installations show a strong interest in archaic and primitive art, geometry, architecture and topography. I like to work with wood because it is alive with memories and history, making each piece totally unique and a real challenge.

48 Shawna Moore Whitefish, Montana

Providence, 2019

encaustic on panel, 40” x 30”

Estimated Value: $5,120-$7,680

Using the simple structure of earth and sky, I shift the narrative experience of painting to find orientation in the horizontal. In simplifying the diagrammatic scheme, I focus on the relationship between two planes of color, their meeting point, and any boundaries which emerge around them. At its greatest, landscape painting is a way of representing the engagement of the mind and felt states with the infinite. Horizon is evoked by the simple contrast of two adjoining horizontal fields of color or as a line crossing the picture plane. Since the tradition of figurative painting has for centuries based the construction of space on reference to the horizon line, it follows that every horizontal that cuts a painting in two is perceived as something familiar.

49 Jill Krutick

Mamaroneck, New York

Montana Rivers, 2019 oil on canvas, 18” x 24”

Estimated Value: $2,400-$3,600

Jill Krutick’s paintings trace her joyful path of self-discovery and creative exploration. 50 Ted Waddell Hailey, Idaho

Gallatin Angus I, 2017 lithograph, 33” x 45”

Estimated Value: $2,000-$3,000

Painter, sculptor, and rancher Theodore Waddell stands as one of the West’s most celebrated contemporary artists. His paintings and prints of “landscapes with animals” couple abstract expressionist technique with creatures—Black Angus cattle, horses, and bison—that populate the high plains and mountain valleys of today’s ranching West. Waddell’s paintings are a combination of rough marks, thick paint, transparent elegant strokes, and, on a few occasions a slow, hard line scratched into the canvas.

51 Gordon McConnell Billings, Montana

Disguised as Soldiers #3 (Riding into Starbuck, 2017 acrylic on canvas, 12” x 24”

Estimated Value: $1,920-$2,880

Though they are derived from immediate experiences, my paintings are haunted by the past. They are suspended animations, congealed of fleeting instants of attention and countless applications of paint. They exist in the eternal now, mediating my subjectivity and yours.

52 PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (1841-1919)

Enfants Jouant a la Balle, c. 1900 Lithograph in colors on laid Arches with Ingres watermark MBM From the edition of 200. Published by Ambroise Vollard, Paris. Printed by Clot. With full margins. 23.4" x 20.1"

Estimated Value: $118,800–$200,375 100% DONATION

The Yellowstone Art Museum wishes to thank Galerie Michael for their full donation.

PROVENANCE: THE PETIET COLLECTION This exquisite color lithograph is world-renowned and recognized to be one of Renoir’s best prints. Each of the ten colors found in the composition makes way for a stunningly captivating glimpse into these children’s world; they are completely immersed in their carefree playground of a charmingly over-grown field on a bright summer’s day. Not only do we see an intricate composition of four characters, we are welcomed into the work through its grand scale and sunny disposition. Examples of this piece have been exhibited in public collections all over the world, including the Cabinet des Estampes, Paris; Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresde; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; New York Public Library; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. The provenance is considered both historical and prestigious since Henri Petiet, who dealt in art in order to fuel his passion as a collector, became a world-renowned expert in the field of printmaking. In fact, via his excellent relations with a number of curators and dealers, he played a crucial role in getting printmaking accepted by the major US collections, both public and private. When the great dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard died in 1939, Henri Petiet bought almost all his editions, including the famous Suite Vollard, a series of 100 etchings submitted by Picasso to his first dealer in exchange for two paintings, one by Cezanne and the other by Renoir. Some 310 complete sets of the Suite Vollard were printed from the 100 original plates, and several sets were acquired by Henri Petiet, one of which is now in the British Museum. HENRI PETIET 1894-1980 Leading a campaign in Italy, as commander of the army he earned the Petiet family a noble title. Endowed with great intelligence and a prodigious memory, of a scientific mind-set and an appetite for collecting, Henri was interested in trains, illustrated books, and classic cars, but his primary passion was the art print. In 1925 he became an art dealer, six months after meeting the famous dealer Ambroise Vollard who had worked with the greatest painters from Cezanne to Van Gogh, and organized Picasso’s first exhibition in 1901. Two years later, in 1927, Petiet launched his career internationally, by developing the print market in the UK. He worked closely with several galleries, and with Campbell Dodgson, curator of the Prints and Drawings Department at the British Museum. In the United States, Petiet was the man behind entire print departments of American museums such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Art Boston. He played a key role in enhancing the place of the print in major American collections, both public and private. Petiet very quickly sought to become the sole publisher of many prints in order to control prices. Petiet’s greatest stroke of genius was in his purchasing of the monumental Vollard Collection when Ambroise Vollard passed away in 1939. This monumental ensemble of prints, the Vollard Suite, included Picasso’s masterpiece, a set of 100 plates etched and engraved between 1930 and 1937 on a variety of subjects. Petiet continued to cultivate a worldwide connoisseurship and market for prints until his passing in 1980.

54 Lynn Thorpe

Rapid City, South Dakota

Land Fold, 2017

oil on canvas, 39” x 26”

Estimated Value: $3,200-$4,800

Through many years of contemplating the relationship between earth and sky, I have gravitated toward increasingly greater concern for what effect human needs and attitudes have had on the balance of this relationship. This concern is expressed variously through playful humor, cynical metaphor, and violent movement.

55 Hooshang Khorasani Ruston, Louisiana

Color Storm Surge,

acrylic on canvas, 36” x 36”

Estimated Value: $2,400-$3,600

For me, “abstract” is a feeling that finally turns into a form - a form that flows. I paint in layers, adding texture, but it’s as if the paint itself takes part in the creative process. I’m the tour guide on the journey, but there’s another participant: my hands are virtually channeled into a universal source of energy. And that energy, in turn, pulses through my brushes and artist tools. Indeed, the common theme for all my works is energy–energy in nature and the world around me, in moving colors that show power, in the inner life of my subjects. I seek to unveil the mysteries and beauties of the universe.

Magenta. Yellow. Somewhere in Between., 2016-2018 acrylic, latex, ink, spray paint, charcoal on cloth, 58” x 58”

Estimated Value: $1,200-$1,800

Inspirations. At their truest state are the transitions or connections my naturally inquisitive and introspective mind sorts out of the gray matter. Interpersonal relationships, textual translations, and pixelated information make up our evolving social normative models; in essence, our story. It’s through these periods of reflection—littered with random synaptic firings, formed with plasticity in mind and of the body — that I connect some dots. It’s all part of the kaleidoscope I work within.

57 Shirle Wempner Big Timber, Montana

Koi in Emerald Waters, 2018 oil on canvas, 20” x 20”

Estimated Value: $2,080-$3,120

Shirle Wempner was raised on a horse ranch on the outskirts of Billings, Montana. Growing up on the ranch resulted in a great appreciation of nature and encouraged her to put to canvas the inspiration she experienced on a day to day basis. Working predominately in oils, utilizing broad brush strokes and palette knife techniques, she creates a feeling of impressionistic realism, concentrating on a painterly representation of the subject. Shirle challenges her imagination through experimentation, and continues to rediscover the creative process with each new piece. Shirle’s subjects are wildlife and figurative representations, incorporating contemporary and historical themes.

58 Susan Stone Billings, Montana

Susan’s Dog and Pony Show, 2019

acrylic and mixed media on canvas, 36” x 48”

Estimated Value: $960-$1,440

I am currently painting in a very abstract style. Although I consider them landscapes, they are not in the traditional sense. They are a record of my experiences living with nature and of everyday events. I choose a color palette, shapes, and marks to express my emotional and physical reactions to the land, weather, animals, world events, and the mundane.

Absentee bid form To place an absentee bid in the auction, please complete all blanks on this form and return to the Yellowstone Art Museum by March 5, 2020. A non-refundable $50 fee is required for all absentee registrations ($50 may be used towards a successful bid purchase.) We will call you to confirm any phone bid arrangements. I request that the YAM enter bids on the following lots up to the maximum price I have indicated for each lot. I understand that by submitting this bid, I have entered into a binding contract to purchase the individual lots, if my bid is successful. I understand that if my bid is successful, I will be obligated to pay the purchase price, which will be the sum of my final bid plus the buyer’s premium (12% for Members or 15% for Not-Yet-Members). On my behalf, the YAM will try to purchase these lots for the lowest possible price, taking into account the reserve and other bids. If identical absentee bids are received, the YAM will give precedence to the first one received. All successful bids are subject to the Auction Rules printed in the catalog on page 6, which I have read. NAME
