Mary Jane Facts... not fiction By Rob Starr
We all know how good it feels when you’ve got a lung full of weed making its way up to tingle and tickle your brain. Not that you really need it, but we’ve come up with a few interesting facts about those deuces you love that will fire up your brain cells while you do the same to a blunt. The British Medical Journal published a report in 2012 that said people who consumed marijuana regularly had a lesser chance of becoming diabetic. Sounds strange when you consider the kind of foods a lot of us zero in on after a bit of smoke, but we all know facts are facts and science doesn’t lie. Not to be outdone in this country, the American Journal of Medicine found that marijuana users have a significantly smaller waistline than people who don’t smoke. Now while you might have heard these kinds of cannabis claims to fame before, we’re willing to bet the next one is going to rattle you a little bit because it ties artificial intelligence together with marijuana.
Potbot
We all know that artificial intelligence is being used in marketing, financing and even other professions like accounting. If you read all the latest reports, you won’t be shocked to find out it’s made it’s way into the medical field too. However, there are new reports about the latest smart computer that can sort through 30,000 strains of marijuana to find the one that cures what ails you. Potbot is the brainchild of those computer science types and this offspring of HAL 2000 can read through medical journals to match up your symptoms with the right strain of weed. If you’ve got insomnia, PotBot can tell you which kind of leafy green herb can help you with the sweet dreams Black Sabbath talked about so long ago. Of course, there’s a pooper on this party. For now, PotBot is held back from being able to search from sea to shining sea by the different regulations in states when it comes to marijuana.
Patients Coalition
As far as doing our very best to make sure that weed is legal in every state, it’s important to take our hats off to our friends in Salt Lake City. Activists there were tired of waiting for their legislature to pass a medical marijuana law. So they are asking voters to bypass the legislature and pass the law in 2018.The Utah 18
THE 420 BOOK
Patients Coalition wants the present marijuana laws expanded because they are too narrow.
State Lines
Finally, here’s a little more Mary Jane news to brighten up your day. Legislators in Pennsylvania might want to take a second look at their decision to award a coveted marijuana growers licensed to a particular firm. Pennsylvania Medical Solutions in Scranton is owned by another firm where two ex-employees were charged with illegally transporting cannabis materials across state lines. Stories like this put us all on notice that the man is still watching and we’re not completely free to light up and do whatever we want with our herb, just yet.

From Bounce Passes to Healthy Grasses How John Salley seeded his pot advocacy on the hardwood
ohn Salley has done things on the basketball court that put him in the top echelons of the game. He’s the first player in NBA history to play on three championship winning teams—the Chicago Bulls, the LA Lakers and the Detroit Pistons. Like a true champion, he’s been working some different skills since switching from the hardcourt to the business world. Salley has driven to a new net acting in film and television since his retirement from basketball. He’s the head of his own production company, been a talk show host, gotten involved with the fight against diabetes and lent his efforts and time to other worthy causes like PETA. John has kept himself as busy after his NBA career as he was during it. He’s also dedicated to educating people on the benefits of healthier eating habits and lifestyles, and his passion for real spirits, wine and food has led him to become a vegan and advocate for marijuana.
Latest Pivot When we talked with him recently about this latest pivot in his life, he started out by telling us what he’s learned from sports about injuries, expectations and staying real. 28

“When you are getting paid to perform, people want to see you perform,” he said. “I decided I wasn’t going to let synthetics help me heal from injuries after I’d taken the time to get there being natural.” He adds he didn’t want to take what he was being offered to mask the pain of injury at the NBA level. “I wanted to be able to walk and perform and be happy in the latter part of my life as well.”
A Natural Lifestyle After his playing days were over, he noticed a number of ex-NBA players had died from heart disease, and started researching out the benefits of a natural lifestyle. His work followed a straight line from his basketball days where he’d staying away from drugs, synthetics and alcohol to the benefits of pot. “I put the same focus I had for basketball into cannabis,” he says. He brings the same dedication to the leaf that made him a legacy on the hardwood. “I don’t watch sports as much as I did now,” he says, “but I read everything doctors put out about cannabis.” His previous experience comes into play here too. He talks about the stress that athletes are under to perform and what they need to do to have a successful post career life. All the energy that goes into a successful sports career can be a problem after their last game on the diamond, field or hardwood. Salley says ex-jocks need a way to slow
their lives down and repair the damage done by the synthetic drugs they use during their active careers.
Leafy green substance And that road for Salley leads to everyone’s favourite leafy green substance. For him, there are lots of reasons why he’d rather fire up a pre-roll than pop off the top of a bottle with an Rx to sooth what ails him, and he thinks athletes, ex-jocks and everyone else should do the same. As you might expect, he has some well researched opinions on the subject: “I believe CBD works better if it has some THC in it,” he says adding he believes cannabis has big advantages over and should be promoted more than socially acceptable drugs like alcohol.
Social and normal to drink “In sports, we advertise a lot for liquor and beer companies because they’re allowed to be sponsors,” he says. “There are a lot of ads and great commercials that make it look social and normal to drink.” According to Salley, these quite often paint a picture that doesn’t take into account the downside of drinking—DUIs, domestic violence, health issues like diabetes and liver problems. All issues that can be avoided with pot. “A lot of those problems come with the consumption of alcoholic beverages,” Salley says. “I always say that cannabis is a healthy alternative.” continued on page 24 Where the grass is ALWAYS GREENER on the other side
29
continued from page 23 He sees big things on the horizon for this natural medicine, big enough in fact that he took his daughter, Tyla, out of college to run his cannabis based enterprise.
The Cannabis Gold Rush “I said let’s invest in this future because it’s like being involved in The Gold Rush for real. I told her we should get our pan out and go get our gold.” The resulting full court business press has taken Salley to some interesting points around the globe he told us about. “When I went to Jamaica, one of the things that I liked was they don’t share spliffs. Everybody has their own joint.”
Line of prerolls That was the motivation for Salley’s line of prerolls that are in the works. There will be a couple of different choices. Another influence he noted was the tobacco in Honduras and the way it was produced quickly and easily. He’s left no stone unturned and also credits his Vegan lifestyle with the desire for the quality infused in his product line. “I just couldn’t have the bad stuff,” he says. “That’s why I’ve got people making me really clean product in Vancouver. It will be in Vancouver October 26th, before it hits the states.”
Vape Pens The vape pens that will be offered don’t need to be charged. They’ll be loaded with 150 puffs and Salley had some simple direction for the folks putting this together for him. “Imagine I can land in any city and buy deuces knowing it’s going to be the same quality, same taste and some good shit,” he says. “I said make it really for me.” It’s all part of the same philosophy that’s followed Salley from the basketball courts to films and talk shows and now to his pot advocacy and latest business ventures. He ends our conversation talking about another one of his latest items that’s wholesome, healthy and vital— just like the man himself. We’re having a facewash and a toothsoap made that is antibacterial, pulls metals out of your body and has THC,” he says.
History with herb His history with the herb goes back to a place and time where users were still considered on the outside of society looking in when they smoked. He tells the story of his brothers who smoked pot back in the 1970s but warned their younger sibling about trying it. He’s also fond of telling the tale about the first time he actually smoked pot. As the story goes, he was 36 years old when a Sacramento teammate offered him some. He remembers sleeping for nine straight hours and waking up without any pain. The turning point for Salley came when he was 39 and getting his foot operated on. He was first prescribed the painkiller Vicodin and the effects had him going back to his surgeon’s office and swearing off synthetic drugs. That doctor gave him a medical marijuana license and the rest as they say is history. 30
THE 420 BOOK
Health benefits of herb Salley is continually on the move and inventing ways to spread the word about THC and the health benefits it has for everyone. As such, he’s always looking to the future. “My youngest daughter is fourteen,” he says. “She can’t smoke marijuana until she’s 18 or 21 and for young athletes, everyone is still caught in ancient times. If I was able to take some of the massage creams I have that have THC in them and work on her, I’d never worry about her having aching joints because THC goes straight to the body.” He also likes to take a poke at the way we used to look at people who smoked pot and what those “stoners” actually knew at the time about how to stay healthy and get the most from their athletic prowess. “It even helps you to breathe better,” he says. “Look at Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Folks used to think ‘that guy was a stoner’ but a lot of people had no idea those guys were doing it right from the very beginning.”
Life philosophy Salley believes that the whole body and mind is the sum of the parts and that’s why there’s much more to his well-thought-out life philosophy than just marijuana. He has a passion for helping people lead a better life that includes keeping a careful eye on what they eat. In fact, the ex-NBA star has been a champion of the Vegan diet for years now. His diet steers away from meat and animal products because he’s researched out what goes into the human body and found that to be the best way to live a natural, organic, healthy lifestyle. He’s gone on record as saying that his current diet is almost raw and he’s eliminated a lot of the oils we get in our processed foods out of his menu.
What meat does to your body Salley says the change in his mentality about food started when he began to look into what meat actually does to your body. More than that, he started to look into and find out what happened to many of his colleagues after their playing days were over. “I told some of the guys from the NBA that I found out how we die,” he said. “We die from heart disease. Last year 11 NBA players died and I think 9 of them had heart disease.” The past award show host and film star goes on to say the normal human lifestyle that most of us practice leads to these kinds of medical problems eventually. He explains what this means to both athletes and normal folks.
Longer legs and limbs “I’ve got longer legs and longer limbs, but when you feed animal fat or animal products into anyone’s body, the oil from the animal gets caught in your veins. So for years and years athletes and other people get told to eat steak and that they need protein.” Eventually, all the oil has nowhere to go and the resulting clots are the beginning of heart disease. Although there are still legions of fans who remember Salley playing on the hardcourt with some of the biggest names in the game, many of those who followed
his career might not have realized he was practicing many of his healthy lifestyle techniques as a pro basketball player.
Transition to vegetarianism He says that he went into macrobiotics in his fifth year of the NBA. However, Salley dates his real transition to vegetarianism to 1999. He says part of the problem with athletes and other people is that no one tells them they are damaging their body by eating and drinking the very things that are advertised as good for them. “Sometimes people even say things like ‘you’re a big guy you need to eat more than anyone else,’” Salley says. One of his passions continues to be educating people so they eat better foods and lead healthier lifestyles.
Full circle Salley is a native of Brooklyn New York who found basketball at an early age. He got a scholarship and played for Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech before turning pro. When everything comes full circle, Salley becomes a little wistful at the end of our interview. Although he’s done a lot to help people understand how to be natural and get the most from health based plants like marijuana and a good diet, he wishes he could have done more earlier. “If I knew then what I know now about my body, I could have changed the world,” he says.

MANKIND COOPERATIVE
GIVES BIG CHECK TO BAJA SPAY & NEUTER
Mankind Cooperative presented a big check for $731.00 to Baja California Spay & Neuter to buy anesthesia to cover sterilizing for 700 animals. “Patients enjoy shopping here. They like feeling safe and interacting with knowledgeable consultants and having the freedom to actually pick up and look at the medicines,” says Ebon Johnson, one of the Directors of Mankind Cooperative. “It is our great pleasure to be able to contribute to Baja Spay & Neuter a charity that provides low cost, safe neutering and education.” “To celebrate Animal Awareness Week we chose this charity as they accomplish so much with so little” explains Cathy Bliss, Director of Marketing. “They use ironing boards as mobile surgical tables and make a tiny incision so there is less stress on the animal and the supply budget” Bliss points out. Mankind Cooperative has plans to support many more charities in the upcoming months. “Mankind Cooperative has pioneered a new model of medical cannabis dispensaries, designed to empower patients with the knowledge and access needed to make sure that you get exactly the right medicine. Unlike other dispensaries where the medicine is behind a counter or under lock-and-key, all of our medicine is available for you, the patient, to look through and choose exactly what you want at your own pace, with or without the support of our cannabis consultants.” Bliss states.

Krystal Küre At first GlANCE,
it may be easy to overlook the subtle, yet fundamental meaning and conceptual thought that went into the brand’s name Krystal Kure. As the name implies- Krystal Kure was initially developed to take full advantage of all the medicinal facets associated with medical grade cannabis. In a recent interview with Raymond the CEO of Krystal Kure, we were given exclusive, personal insight to the company’s story that is an excellent portrayal of “Tragedy and Triumph.” This led to the research and development of one of the most potent, if not THE most potent vape/dab oil concentrate filtering processes available in the market today. “In November of 2016 my fiancé and I were in a very bad car accident,” he says, “We were both transported to the hospital in ambulances and all I could think about was her the whole time. When we arrived at the hospital, I learned from the doctor that she had sustained some type of neck injuries and that immediately caused me great concern for her safety and her well-being,” he adds. “They put her through the MRI machine and when the doctor came back, he said that he noticed something abnormal while analyzing her images.” He continues to add, “They found what they believed to be a Nodule and that they would need to conduct further testing.” Shortly after the nodule was discovered, biopsy complete and Raymond stated, “my whole life changed from that moment on. I cried… I cried more than I ever have as a man.” The Krystal Kure executive described himself as feeling ‘powerless’ and being unable to rationalize why something like this was happening so suddenly. The soon to be married couple then realized that they were confusing warning signs with less critical ailments. Early detection is a key component in preventing and effectively treating most types of cancers. As Raymond is discussing possible treatment options with said fiancé he states, “she told me she didn’t want any poisons in her body at all,” referring to the various treatment options. That meant that Raymond and his company were going to have to really get into gear developing a product that they would be able to standby as a healer - a “cure” of sorts. The process of refinement consists of a patent-pending filtering process that was designed and intended to produce the maximum amount of CBD extraction possible. “My fiancé began to gain her weight back and she began to return to her normal self. It was incredible.” Now here we are today; following the same process for making the highest quality THC available to the market. A product that takes countless hours of processing and refining to complete. Our concentrates are made from the highest-grade flowers and buds that one can get their hands on. We use the top strains that our patients love and we create a variety of different categories of cartridges. From our Berner Cookie hybrids to our Louis XIII Indica’s, the quality remains the best in the market. All Krystal Kure oils are 100% organic and then CO2 blasted. We don’t use solvents, PG, VEG or MCT oils like a lot of companies and our oil goes through the process of distillation which gives it the most clear and potent look and taste. We take pride in providing our patients with the cleanest concentrates, it has become our passion and our team of experts are doing their best to maintain that level of quality and consistency!

you stop and think about all the different things that get sold on the Internet every day, you might not to be too shocked to find out one of the very first items sold online was a bag of pot. It was the early 1970s and a group of students from Stanford and MIT did what everybody reading this would do if they thought they could get away with it—they sold weed online. Of course there’s a few good reasons why that didn’t take off as the favorite way to buy herb; even with all the big steps we’ve taken towards making marijuana as acceptable as bottled water, you’re better off buying it from someone you can meet face-to-face at least for now.
Saved Your Allowance?
That said, here’s a few things you need to know if you’ve saved your allowance and you’re heading out the front door on your way to buy your first bag of pot.
Buying weed? Be careful and read! By Rob Starr
Buying a scale is a good investment. You want to be sure that you’re getting what you’re paying for and one good way to check that angle out is to weigh any pot you’re buying. It’s not hard to find a cheap scale at a place like Walmart or on Amazon.com. Remember having one of these won’t protect you entirely from buying some bad weed but it’s a good start. It’s good to take a friend with you if you’re going to buy your first bag. You don’t know what you’re looking for the first time around but an experienced friend will be able to steer you clear from things like a bag full of seeds and sticks. Keep in mind, whether you’re buying that first bag or you’ve become a real pro at it, any weed you buy needs to be green.
Weed Handshake
You’ve got to know the weed handshake too. If you’ve got a dealer that likes to meet in public, the chances are they’ll be experts at passing you the weed and expecting you to put the money in their hand at the same time. If you’ve got a stoner friend, you can practice this a few times before you try it out in public. Here’s another little interesting fact. Even though THC is the most common ingredient in weed and the one that everybody knows, there

are actually more than 60 different cannabinoids in marijuana. Just a little something for you to mull over while you’re on the way home with your very first bag.
Look Cool
One of the other things that you’ll need to master before you buy that very first bag of weed is how to look cool while you’re doing it. If you’re nervous and you look it, you’ll be attracting attention and you might even scare your dealer off. Here’s another little fact you can mull over if you’re feeling a little bit anxious. Marijuana is considered a neural protector and that means it actually stimulates brain cells and helps them to grow. Being smart business-wise is another advantage. The more the markets legalize weed, the more it becomes like any other commodity and the prices go up and down. If you stay informed and always understand what you’re buying, you’ll be able to zero in on the cheapest, best quality weed as you gain experience. Finally, it’s a good idea to be cautious because reports tell us that the FBI has put together some data on Mary Jane. It seems that an American is arrested for some kind of offence focusing on pot every 42 seconds here in the United States.
