california? Our state is breaking loose and Southern California is leading the way. Los Angeles and San Diego are now providing certainty where confusion has brought panic to our industry. The State of California is getting ready to back-stop the cities and lo and behold we are going to have a legal cannabis regulatory environment before you know it! We want to provide a brief primer on developments in the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego; then finish up briefly with the actions the state has taken to provide some certainly around 2018.

Los Angeles
Los Angeles now has a Department of Cannabis Regulation, providing one stop for all your cannabis regulatory needs. There are three things that are clear in terms of these regulations: •There will be no growing or manufacturing in the City of Los Angeles until further notice; we expect this to change but that is presently the law; •Pre-ICO dispensaries (those on the 2013 list for the most part) will continue to have priority for the foreseeable future. This has set off a scurry of multi-million dollar transactions as the maneuvering begins for what is perceived to be a very scarce resource; •Distribution and testing will continue to be lawful activities and there is consideration of on-site consumption. So what does this mean? •For the customer, it may be more difficult to find a variety of strains. Prices
will now be fully regulated. In the coming months make sure your taxes are in line, fees are ready, and you are moving towards some type of tracking system for your product. Applications need to be filled out, legal counsel in place, and operating in a legal green zone. •For the Cultivator, start looking for cities close by that are opening up for cultivation. The new model for you will be through a Distributor. In the coming months get a tracking system in place and start now.

When confronted with the option of legalizing just medical testing or legalizing an entire system, the city council chose the latter: legalizing cultivation, manufacturing, testing and retail dispensaries in San Diego.

As for store fronts, a ban was lifted regarding the proximity to one another. Looks like pricing is about to get a lot more competitive in some areas. All in all this is a huge win for San Diego allowing for the expansion of a growing market in the local area. So what does this mean? •For customers, it could mean a variety of outcomes that we will truly have to wait and see. But one thing is for sure, there will be a lot more jobs hitting the local economy. •Delivery services have to work with a storefront in order to operate. For you it could mean extra capital for working under your license. With the ban lifted on proximity to another store, you may have some friendly competition headed your way.
In the city of San Diego, store fronts will be able to sell recreationally, in addition to the previously granted medical marijuana sales.
This will create a fully integrated marijuana network in San Diego, assuring a diversified tax base. Part of this provision is the topic of transportation and sales. Under the new law cultivators will only be able to sell to store fronts and other cultivators, any additional transport will be to testing facilities. Cultivators will be allowed to have two shops per

State of California The 90 day printable license. The state is not ready to lay into action its set laws for the upcoming California cannabis birthday. Instead what will happen is 90 day licenses will be handed out to those that have the following: Local Approval, type of business, a diagram of your company layout, taxes/financial statements, and contact information. Pretty simple. Due to the complexity of the regulations the state is ready to extend the 90 day licenses if necessary. The good news is with January 1st just around the corner the state is open to answering any question you may have. Applications will be available the beginning of December, have your documents ready and don’t lag. With the influx of applications you want to
get in early. Applications will be accepted but not granted before January 1st. Licensing workshops will be held to specify in some grey areas that the state left for the city to interpret. If you do not make a workshop make sure to do your research online or contact a local law firm for guidance. Lastly, recently covered and on the horizon is cannabis insurance. With the Wild West soon coming to an end with that will be the interest of insurance companies. That’s good news for store fronts all around the nation. Madz breaks the brand
to get what’s real By: Rob Starr If you take look at and read through the press that’s been written about her, you might think you know Madzilla, aka Madelyn Lance. In fact it would be easy to see how the tats and sexy poses made her a modern pin up for the pot world, today’s version of those curvy WWII WACS that did their part with sultry smiles and perky salutes almost a century ago. But you need to look closer to get the real story. In fact you need to look right at one of the features that prompted the press to give her the “sexy-stoner brand” handle she’s trying to rework. “I did get my neck tattooed,” she said. “That one is for my parents. It’s an hour glass with two hearts connected. Every time I see it, I’m motivated to do everything I need to do.”
Old adage
Right there you know how true the old adage is that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Although of course in this case there’s nothing wrong with appreciating her sassy good looks and savvy charm for a second or two before you dig deeper into what makes this 28 year old phoneme tick. Getting to know this Long Beach based model is about understanding how she’s let the ingredients simmering in the cauldron 34

of her past rise to the surface to skim them and make something new, how she epitomizes the old adage from Hemmingway that “the world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places.” It’s just that for her, the process started much too early. Her mother was born in Long Beach but Madelyn was born in Oregon. “My parents ended up separating when I was younger,” she says. “They both did heavy drugs like meth, coke and heroin, and my Dad was an alcoholic.”
Left a mark
To make matters worse, her father had a liver problem and passed away when she was only 10 years old. Although she says she doesn’t remember him very well, they have one important date they share in common that’s left a mark on Madzilla. “I was born on his birthday which made it really crazy,” she says. “Every year we share the same birthday.” After her father’s death, young Madelyn was left alone with her mother and that woman’s struggle with drugs. Their situation took them down that never-ending spiral that’s often the earmark of drug and alcohol abuse. continued on page 30

Abandoned houses
The family of two lived in a series of abandoned houses and even cars. At a tender young age when most children are used to playing in playgrounds and enjoying warm meals in the comfort of a caring and nurturing environment, the girl who would become Madzilla was learning to expect different things from the world around her. “We even needed to eat out of dumpsters. My mom taught me how to go dumpster diving,” she says with a slight laugh that reinforces the inner strength she’s needed to survive. “Most of my clothes and shoes were out of the dumpster when I was younger.”
Hollywood script
It would all be a classic Hollywood script if it wasn’t real. However this is a genuine scenario and not one where art imitates life. Eventually, her mother allowed her to go live in another state with some relatives. Her mother told her she’d be back at the end of the summer but it was a trip that would last three years and leave another mark on her personality and the

person she is today. The relatives that she stayed with wouldn’t allow her to talk to her mother on the phone unless they were standing within earshot so Madelyn wouldn’t tell her what was really going on in her new life.
Walking billboard
In a way, she’s a walking billboard for her own history. Take the letter B that’s tattooed on the side of her face as a tribute to her half-brother Brian who’s been incarcerated for years. When she was 13 years old, Madzilla and her mother settled in a trailer park in Arizona. The other residents were mostly crack addicts and not surprisingly they fought constantly in living quarters that were unfit for both. “Me and my mom shared a bedroom. I’d come home from school and there’d be heroin needles on the floor.”
A pair of skulls
Back then she got her first set of tattoos which were a pair of skulls shaped like
cherries. Not surprisingly, the young girl set out on a road that might have led to her eventual ruin. At 14, she moved out to hang around with some friends who were headed down the same path. She lived in group homes, crashed where she could and was often homeless during the period. It was a recipe for a wasted life and certain disaster. However, Madelyn had another set of genes in her makeup that were to set her on a different path and maybe save her life. She explains what prompted this life changing pivot. “At one point my mom and I were living with my grandmother. I’m named after my grandma and she is one of the big reasons that I became a model.” Vintage pinup When she describes that relative as “a super pretty vintage pinup looking lady” who modeled back in the day, you can hear her voice change and become hopeful and buoyant. There were modeling pictures around the space all three shared that motivated Madelyn from a young age to look beyond
her present circumstances to the possibility of a better future. Still, there were the constant reminders of her life as it was and even one episode with a sick aunt, she thought of after she found the benefits of marijuana.
Bedridden in the trailer
“My aunt had multiple sclerosis at the time. She was bedridden in the trailer while we were living in Arizona. She was at the stage where all her limbs were contracted and she had huge bedsores,” this woman friends nicknamed Madzilla says. “She couldn’t talk anymore and it got really bad. If I’d known about CBD back then, I definitely would’ve given it to her.” Even though her grandmother was a positive influence, Madelyn’s life had a lot stacked up in the negative ledger. After a long bumpy relationship, she finally found a common ground with her mother when she was 20 years old. At a time when things seemed to be smoothing over, her mother passed away from a methadone overdose. It was during the early stages of her daughter’s modeling career. “I had a big photo shoot in a warehouse and my brother called me from prison and told me ‘Mom died,’” she says admitting the subject is one she’s only shared in a small circle and that she’s only become comfortable talking about it recently. Madelyn had visited her mother two weeks before. At 20, both her parents were dead and her brother was locked away. The pressure and shock of dealing with life without any family by her side forced her to make some hard decisions about what she’d need to do to survive.
Left alone
For the first time in her life, she was left alone to make decisions for herself, by herself. The realization took a toll. “I started freaking out because I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life,” she says. “I started stripping a couple weeks after that happened because literally I had no money and I was scared and felt so alone.” After a few years, she started to make a name for herself and realized that dancing
was going to give her the leverage to further her modeling career and do other things she wanted to in life.
Credits weed
She gave it up three years ago to model more. Madelyn credits weed with helping her get through all the rough patches and curves that life has thrown her. “I did experiment with a few other things but at the end of the day, weed is what calms me down and helps me to stay creative. When I smoke, I feel like everything I do is for my mom and dad.” She pauses for a second to collect her thoughts before continuing. “If I didn’t have weed, I probably wouldn’t even be sane right now. It really is a medicine.”
Serious medical conditions
She says that one of the things she likes best about marijuana is the way it brings people together and that it’s the better route to take for dealing with things like pain, depression and serious medical conditions than some other options. When all is said and done she takes a low-key approach that puts using her fame to help other people at a premium. “Last year we did a big charity event for CBD. A friend of mine suffers from a rare medical condition and uses it. I just smoke weed and do what I do and other people call me an activist.”
Do the right thing
This compassionate stoner the LA Weekly called “the World’s Most Famous Pothead Hip-Hop Tattooed Model,” wants to do the right thing with her success. However, she knows that appearing in Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s “French Inhale” video and having a large Instagram following is equal parts success and luck. Consider this part of her story that reads like this script from a movie. “I was out at the clubs one night. At that time I had just done some modeling.”

She goes on to say how a stranger came up to ask her what she did for a living. When she told him she was a model, he replied
that he worked with Snoop Dogg and asked her if she wanted to be in a video. Her background in videos is impressive and not to be denied—even if she’s trying to break away from the image it’s given her and start anew. Still, she’s the first to admit being in Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s “French Inhale” video does open some doors. She’d never done any video work before that and wasn’t sure about it, so she chose a characteristic move to help her decide if she wanted to work with the relative stranger that night at the club. “I finally said, “You know what? Let’s go rock, paper scissors. If you win, I’ll give you my contact info but make sure it’s for something important.” The rest, as they say, is history.
New direction
Now that that her career has taken off, Madelyn “Madzilla” Lance is characteristically driving it in a new direction because if you know her and her story you know she’ s always done things on her own, her own way. So what will the new incarnation of Madzilla be? More videos with weed icons and brazen photo shoots that combine the sensual and sassy? Dogs are man’s best friend and so is recreational/medicinal pot. So, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that some smart entrepreneur has put the two together to sell dogs to guard legal grows operations. However, if you peak behind the curtain to get the full picture of the training, history and dedication that goes into Taylor Made Working Dogs, you’ll see there’s great story too.

Like the name implies, Taylor Made Working Dogs is a top quality dog trainer in the San Diego area. They have several outstanding training courses to choose from and have made their name as a third-generation breeder of working German shepherd dogs. Kris Taylor is the owner and head trainer. The situation quickly became a security issue. Taylor explains. “The issue was this guy had been robbed several times on his farm.” Taylor had already sold the family a dog for personal protection. That’s when he saw another opportunity to put another one of his highly trained animals to work. “He hasn’t had a problem since,” Taylor says. 50

Reefer Ranchers
His company fits the need for growers who live far enough away from urban centers police response times can be hours. In some cases, these reefer ranchers even need to walk out for miles just to get a cell signal when something goes wrong. Perhaps best of all, Taylor Made Working Dogs come from a long line of family dedicated to the breed that stretches back across the ocean. Although he got his first German Shepard in 1987 and became a helper at the San Diego Schutzhund Club in 2003, the family relationship started in the homeland of the breed.

“My mom’s from Germany and there’s a very common sport there called Schutzhund,” he says. Basically, it’s a test of the dog’s ability to protect and be
more useful companions to people. It’s the original breed standard. The result is a small group of breeders that bring out the best in the working side of the dog’s temperament. One of the by products of this Schutzhund classification and training are dogs that are bred for protection work. Taylor Made Working Dogs breeds specifically for that. They are also good companions in the home and peaceful and controlled in a variety of circumstances too. “Confidence, ability and nerve are just as important as a drive to work,” he says. Always searching and looking. If they’re functional enough to be used in combat, they can keep any criminals off your property.”
