THE 420 BOOK

Weed Be Gone How to Get Mary Jane to Leave Your System By Rob Starr

We all love it so. For some, there’s nothing like a big bowl in the morning

and others favour brownies and other treats laced with delicious and inspiring cannabutter. We roll it, push it into homemade bongs and ornate pipes, and even get the best minds in science to tinker with it in their labs so we can take it with us in various forms wherever we go. But the world isn’t a perfect place just yet and there are those times when we need to make sure there’s no reefer in our bloodstream. Yes, dear readers, even though our leafy friend is finally legal, there’s still a need to be clean for a drug test in some workplaces.

Frowning Visages

And even though those sad times when the frowning visages of old school establishment crew cuts are getting smaller and smaller in our collective rear view mirrors, you’ll need to know the best ways to flush your system out. It’s important to keep in mind that one of the most common things that employers will be looking for in your pee is something called metabolites. These are basically little markers that are left inside your body after you process something through and when it comes to pot, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in your bloodstream is what will give you away. In this case, the THC metabolite is called tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic acid (THC-COOH).

Mumbo Jumbo

Enough of all this mumbo-jumbo you’re probably saying by now. How do I get to enjoy myself and still pass a drug test? How much or little pot can I smoke and still remain employed so I can buy some more? Well, because everybody’s different there’s no simple answer but THC cannabinoids can generally be found in the bloodstream 1 to 2 days after using for infrequent users and for the rest of us, it acts like a red flag to your bosses for 7 to 14 days afterward. So, what’s left is trying to beat a drug test or not smoking it all before one. You should be careful who you get advice from here because that dude in your neighbourhood who looks just like James Franco in Pineapple Express is steering you in the wrong direction when he tells you adding a little dishwasher detergent in your sample will render pot invisible to a discerning scientist’s eye in a laboratory. In fact, this old wive’s tale can actually make your urine start to bubble when it’s being transported to the lab and if that’s not a red flag, we don’t know what is.

Another Dodge

Getting your friend’s clean urine sample is another dodge that might work but you’ll need to know how to work it. You might very well be able to tape a clean sample to the inside of your leg if no one is there to watch you pee, but you need to make sure the piss that you’re switching yours out for is at room temperature and properly labelled when you hand it in.

Finally, here are few tips for those of you who don’t have the nerve for the cloak and dagger route. Drinking lots of water the day of your test should help to dilute your urine but it’s really a gamble based on how much you smoked whether you can water it down enough to pass a test. Keep in mind that after drinking a ton of water your pee will be colorless so it’s a good idea to add some color with some vitamin B. The last bit of advice might seem a little counterintuitive to a real stoner but exercise is one of the best routes you can take to rid your body of the toxins that could cost you your job. LOKI LOTION

safe access fOr aLL Cannabis to me, is a medicine—but more than that, it’s a peace movement. A movement of people who want to see better for other humans.”

both beth and christina are moms who are transitioning in their careers and trying to reinvent themselves within the cannabis industry. beth hasn’t always been a cannabis user. after a serious illness beth has found relief in life through cannabis and was able to escape the pharmaceutical cycle. “Thank God for cannabis, “states Beth. “I was able to take the edge off and get away from all my medications. I had insomnia and could get away from sleeping pills as well. This was all because of cannabis and edibles.” christina is a cancer survivor, and cannabis saved her life. a combination of western medicine and cannabis, helped her to pull out of her illness and was able to not be addicted to pharmaceuticals. after a life-altering conversation with her doctor, christina was determined to better her health through alternative methods. “The opiates were poisoning me more than the cancer, once it was over, and you can’t live a life like that. The doctor looked me in the eye and told me, ‘You’re not sick. You didn’t take your opiates today. You’re opiate dependent.’ Once I heard that, I was going to dependent on these pills, there was no way that was happening. Cannabis is not a cure-all, but it will help you fight.” THE BRAND TBC: For those who are new to the world of topicals, what could you tell me about your brand and the benefits of your ointments and products? C: “We are a whole plant company, our products are THC based. We’re working on a CBD product. . . [because] we understand the need for CBD for the healing of patients such as children, but with our products, there is no psycho-activity involved, and THC has proven itself as a massive painkiller.” B: “Our belief system is that there needs to be affordable and healthy products. We are on this mission to create a product line that is affordable, [and natural].” C: “We started out as a topical pain solvent—we strongly believe in that. But we have moved into the beauty line; we believe that there should be natural products in the market with the value of cannabis and essential oils—to move away from the chemical

and cancer causing agents we find in mainstream America. . . We have body scrubs for skin cleansing, [as well as] an Epsom salt soak for pain and relieving toxins in the body. . . And we are working on an all-natural CBD product.” What efforts does your brand take to educate your clients and patients? B: “There are too many people that have been affected by crappy products. There has to be help for people out there, and we strongly believe in cannabis therapy. For us, it’s about educating people about cannabis, essential oils, and detoxing the body—[in order to live a more natural lifestyle.” B & C:“Cannabis therapy is about educating people, and giving people options. There needs to be education about milligrams, as well.” B:“Cannabis for me, isn’t a one-size fits all. It works for some people, and not for others. People have different reactions to it... I feel as though I need to put a disclaimer out there. Just as pharmaceuticals have side effects, cannabis has an adjustment period.” C: “With topicals there is a lot of education that has to go on. You’re putting it on your skin, it isn’t entering the blood stream, so you’re not going to test positive for a drug test and you’re not going to have psychoactive effects.” LOKI LOTION: HOMELESS OUTREACH C: “We have our homeless outreach as well. One of our big things is: safe access for all. The homeless need medicine, they cannot afford a recommendation, these things are impossible for the But they need and deserve to have medicine that is not addictive. That’s how we got started. Our testing came from the homeless in downtown LA. These people, given the choice, want to use cannabis.” What do you mean your testing came from the homeless in LA? C: “We had a product and nowhere to put it. At the time, we were based in downtown in LA. We’ve always come from the mindset of helping those in need, so we started giving our products out on the streets, and we followed-up with those who were using it...And we continue to outreach.”

UCBA TRADE ASSOCIATION URGES CANNABIS PATIENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS TO VOTE IN SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES SPONSORED PROPOSITION M UCBA Trade Association, the largest trade association of Proposition D compliant medical marijuana dispensaries operating legally within the City of Los Angeles, voted unanimously to support Proposition M, the City of Los Angeles sponsored cannabis regulatory ballot initiative. “UCBA is inspired that patients, cannabis business owners and the people of California voted overwhelmingly to legalize cannabis for adults over the age 21. We are now looking forward to coming together, once again, to vote for Measure M on the March 2017 City ballot. In the spirit of collaboration, the UCBA Board of Directors determined that the best approach to ensure uniform cannabis regulations for patients, communities and cannabis businesses is by working with the Los Angeles City Council rather than continuing to seek voter approval for our own initiative. UCBA members are pleased that Proposition N was the catalyst that lead to Proposition M and created a much broader inclusion of the overarching initiative.

THE GREEN

ECONOMY “The green economy is in a critical state of transition.”

The nature of the marijuana market in California is experiencing a critical shift. The recent policy change is expected to relieve the determent associated with marijuana transactions. These changes in user sanctions are believed to cause a shift in demand, influencing the price paid by consumers in local markets. By examining the characteristics of the market, using supply-side theory, we can better project the future of the green economy. The marijuana landscape of California is subjected to key variables, which should be considered in this examination. They are as follows: • There seems to exist regional markets for marijuana. Meaning that prices per ounce vary by region in California. An average top shelf ounce in San Diego is $350 versus the $285 in Santa Barbara. • Differences in transaction-level characteristics influence buyers and sellers. Transaction-specific characteristics can include dispensary operational fees, taxes, and other factors.

AN EXAMINATION OF THE CALIFORNIA MARIJUANA MARKET THE SUPPLY-SIDE If the changes in California policy are expected to lower sanctions, and the supply of marijuana is perfectly competitive, the adoption of these policies should not affect the monetary price of marijuana. However if the supply is upward sloping, because of the policy change, the increase would cause a temporary demand shift to the right. Resulting in a short-term increase in the retail price of marijuana. It is important to note that the cost of marijuana will only increase during the adjustment period of the new California policy. Afterwards, the retail price is expected to substantially decline. “The price the consumers face will depend heavily on taxes, the structure of the regulatory regime, and how taxes and regulations are enforced.” A contributing factor to this, is changes in marijuana production. For example, the widespread adoption of hydroponics has enhanced productivity while reducing costs. Another factor that affects the price paid for marijuana is the demand for a particular product in a specific region. As mentioned earlier, regional differences affect the price paid for local markets. As you move further from the source, the cost of transportation, maintenance, etc. increases. For example the popular hybrid Girl Scout Cookies originates in Northern California, however you can find the strain in most San Diego storefronts. Therefore it is safe to assume, that the price for GSC increases as you travel further South. The green economy is in a critical state of transition. As the market further develops from the policy change, dramatic shifts in consumer experiences are expected to increase. Because the exact nature of the market can not be predicted, there needs to be further analysis on the subject. Stay tuned as we traverse the marijuana landscape. With Love, TBC

UNDERSTANDING

VAPORIZATION Vaping technologies are a sub-sector of the vaporization industry with the cannabis and recreational market. Vaporization has a history beginning about seven years ago, with the advent of e-cigarettes. However, the transition from the tobacco market to the recreational and medicinal cannabis market has created some issues with the hardware. To better understand how this technology works, I spoke with Dave from Jupiter Research who is an engineer in the field of vaping technology. By: B.C.

Within the sector of vaping technologies, it became apparent that consumers were trying to use valuable cannabis oils with inefficient hardware designed for tobacco derived nicotine, e-liquids. Members of the industry were trying to adapt the original tobacco hardware designs for high-viscosity extractions, but this doesn’t work. It burns the liquid, or the liquid doesn’t properly transport to the heater. When a person overheats oil, or gets a bad taste, it’s connected to the oil transportation process. It’s is also important that in the cartridge when the product transports the oil in a closed reservoir, as the oil is being consumed, it needs to be replaced with air—it is just as important for the oil to breathe. The biggest difference between tobacco vaping and marijuana vaping is the viscosity of the fluids. E-liquid has the viscosity of 500, and most oil extracts of cannabis have 80,000 and above. The viscosity interferes with the flow of the fluid, the higher the viscosity the slower the fluid travels towards the atomizer for vaporization. In regards to the health benefits of vaporization, there are some pros compared to the traditional methods of smoking. With traditional methods of smoking there exists side effects. During the combustion process of organic materials, when you burn cannabis or tobacco, there isn’t enough oxygen in the 48

THE 420 BOOK

environment to complete the combustion process which then results in partial molecules which recombine into new organic chemicals which may or may not cause problems. Along with the THC, you consume these organic chemicals. With vaporization, the process is changing the physical state of the product and not the chemical structure. You’re heating the oil from a liquid to the state of a vapor, which then coalesces into tiny droplets—which is what you see, tiny droplets of oil which has been vaporized. Dabbing is also a vaporization process. The nail is heated, and the fluid goes on the nail, and the oil is vaporized. The science behind vaporization shows us that it is necessary to use the correct paraphernalia when using high quality extractions, because using tobacco based vaporizers will result in burnt liquid and a bad taste. This is because of the difference in viscosity levels between the two types of fluids. Ultimately vaporization causes less stress to your body when consuming cannabis, because it lacks the combustion process associated with traditional forms of cannabis consumption. Finally, dabbing or vaping high quality extractions are the purest way to appreciate the cannabis.

dab

In the past few months, the San Diego storefront scene has been providing a complimentary dab service to the patrons of certain dispensaries. The experience varies from storefront to storefront which makes for an experience that is entertaining yet worrisome. SCENARIO 1

While conducting research on affordable, yet local (Southern Californian based), shatters I encountered my first dab bar. Some gentlemen had lined up, awaiting their free dab. A woman prepared the oil and the rig, and administered the dab for them. After making my purchase, the lass who assisted me offered me a complimentary dab. She was new—the other woman had gone to the back. First she alcohol swabbed the oil rig—thank goodness! Next she proceeded to torch the nail. Then she placed a cotton swab in the hot nail. TBC: Excuse me, what are you doing? Young Lass: It’s called Q-Tipping. To be clear, it is not advised to place the cotton swab in the hot nail before the oil. The Q-Tip Technique is a popular cleaning method commonly used with quartz bangers. After taking a low-temperature dab, the user cleans the inside of the nail with a cotton swab. This prevents residual oil from burning and turning the nail black. The rest of my experience was unorthodox as well. The manager had returned, and had henceforth banished the young lass. However the influx of customers had caused the manager to make some inappropriate decisions. She turned to a friend, not an employee, and asked him to administer my dab. It was too fat. I asked for half, I know my limitations. As one who has dabbled in the practice of dabbing, I can say that I am not a novice practitioner. However after receiving my complimentary dab, I felt it necessary to sit in my car for 10 minutes before driving. The point is, dab bars are dangerous. By providing this service, storefronts are an indirect contribution to driving under the influence. TBC: Isn’t dangerous for people to drive home? Young Lass: Huh. I’ve never thought of that.

SCENARIO 2

While visiting a regular dispensary in North County, I encountered my second dab bar. Long story short, they didn’t clean their pieces after each use and had no regard for proper dosage. Easily tempted by the free dab, I regretted my decision again. TBC: Isn’t it dangerous for people to drive home? Budtender: Its cool—you live nearby. San Diego dispensaries are taking advantage of the legalization lapse; without regulation each storefront acts autonomously, resulting in varied experiences. At first glance, the dab bar is enticing. Free oil! But the reality is they are dangerous and disgusting. Sharing pieces with everybody in town is how patients get the acne ring around their lips—fun fact. Moreover, driving under the influence is not cool. The dab bar is an exciting concept but without a designated driver, I encourage patients to refrain.
