Weed Be Gone How to Get Mary Jane to Leave Your System

We all love it so. For some, there’s nothing like a big bowl in the morning

and others favour brownies and other treats laced with delicious and inspiring cannabutter. We roll it, push it into homemade bongs and ornate pipes, and even get the best minds in science to tinker with it in their labs so we can take it with us in various forms wherever we go.

But the world isn’t a perfect place just yet and there are those times when we need to make sure there’s no reefer in our bloodstream. Yes, dear readers, even though our leafy friend is finally legal, there’s still a need to be clean for a drug test in some workplaces.

Frowning Visages

And even though those sad times when the frowning visages of old school establishment crew cuts are getting smaller and smaller in our collective rear view mirrors, you’ll need to know the best ways to flush your system out.

It’s important to keep in mind that one of the most common things that employers will be looking for in your pee is something called metabolites. These are basically little markers that are left inside your body after you process something through and when it comes to pot, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in your bloodstream is what will give you away. In this case, the THC metabolite is called tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic acid (THC-COOH).

Mumbo Jumbo

Enough of all this mumbo-jumbo you’re probably saying by now. How do I get to enjoy myself and still pass a drug test? How much or little pot can I smoke and still remain employed so I can buy some more?

Well, because everybody’s different there’s no simple answer but THC cannabinoids can generally be found in the bloodstream 1 to 2 days after using for infrequent users and for the rest of us, it acts like a red flag to your bosses for 7 to 14 days afterward.

So, what’s left is trying to beat a drug test or not smoking it all before one. You should be careful who you get advice from here because that dude in your neighbourhood who looks just like James Franco in Pineapple Express is steering you in the wrong direction when he tells you adding a little dishwasher detergent in your sample will render pot invisible to a discerning scientist’s eye in a laboratory. In fact, this old wive’s tale can actually make your urine start to bubble when it’s being transported to the lab and if that’s not a red flag, we don’t know what is.

Another Dodge

Getting your friend’s clean urine sample is another dodge that might work but you’ll need to know how to work it. You might very well be able to tape a clean sample to the inside of your leg if no one is there to watch you pee, but you need to make sure the piss that you’re switching yours out for is at room temperature and properly labelled when you hand it in.

Finally, here are few tips for those of you who don’t have the nerve for the cloak and dagger route.

Drinking lots of water the day of your test should help to dilute your urine but it’s really a gamble based on how much you smoked whether you can water it down enough to pass a test. Keep in mind that after drinking a ton of water your pee will be colorless so it’s a good idea to add some color with some vitamin B. The last bit of advice might seem a little counterintuitive to a real stoner but exercise is one of the best routes you can take to rid your body of the toxins that could cost you your job.

CARLOS There aren’t a lot of us that will do any one thing for a half a century.

Thankfully for all of us that doesn’t include Euvin Spencer aka Don Carlos. The legendary reggae artist is celebrating fifty years as one of the most inspired messengers of that skittering beat with the peace and love Jah infused message that makes everyone get up and dance or stop to enjoy the sunset.

Like a lot of other musicians who have used their music to channel their experiences and their lives into notes, chords and lyrics, this artist started out making the best of bad circumstances. Carlos grew up in the notorious Waterhouse section of Jamaica. It was the kind of beginning that could have resulted in an entirely different outcome for any young man growing up in the 1960s on the Caribbean Island. However, Carlos decided to take the path laid out before him by King Tubby and other names that would become synonymous with what would become an international explosion in reggae music like the The Jays.

His manager, Jose Irizarry, talked recently with 420 Book about Don Carlos’ humble beginnings and his recent successful efforts to bring reggae music to a new generation.

“That (Waterhouse) was the place where a lot of the pioneers like The Wailers and Gregory Isaacs hung out,” he said. “It was kind of a town for Rude Boys. It wasn’t very easy for an outsider to go there.” Irizarry told us that while it’s not as dangerous to go to Waterhouse today is it was back years ago when Carlos was coming up through the ranks, it’s still not the best place on the island to “ have a very warm vacation.”

However, this was the backdrop for the younger version of the man that would become a reggae legend through his many milestones including being one of the founding members of Black Uhuru. Irizarry goes on to say that the criminal element wasn’t the only problem the younger Don Carlos needed to stay aware of.

The government back in the day took the lead when it came to hassling Rastafarians. The added pressure made it even harder to express themselves openly with music.

“Those were tough times but then Bob Marley came along and made it all part of the culture, “ Irizarry said adding that bringing the Rastas and their music into the mainstream changed the government’s attitude toward them completely.

COMPASSION FOR MUSIC

Irizarry tells us about an early story involving Don Carlos and how he demonstrated his compassion for music which is a trait he carries with him even today.

“When DC was young, the government was trying to help with kids to stop some of the violence. When they asked them what they wanted, all of the other children said a gun except for Don Carlos who asked for a guitar.

He was seventeen years old and that’s when he got his very first instrument.”

Years later, Carlos was riding a bicycle delivering letters as a postman with his guitar strapped on the back. Irizarry says one of his favorite resting spots during that part of his life was a herbcamp where Rastamans hung out, smoked, played music, chanted and praised Jah. It had hammocks in the back where Don Carlos liked to mediate and play his guitar.

For the next three years he perfected his song writing and vocal stylings. Finally, in 1981, there was another groundbreaking moment in his career with Suffering for Negus Roots.

For those in the know, Carlos has never really left the reggae spotlight and has always been

considered one of the forefathers of the genre.

That of course brings us to the next part of the Don Carlos story. We were interested in finding out what this reggae legend has been up to in more recent times.

Irizarry lets us in on a few inside secrets including some plans he’s working on to put Black Uhuru back together for one more tour.

“I’m trying to bring them back just for a one year tour,” he says before elaborating on the things that Don Carlos has done more recently and continues to look forward to. In fact, if you take the time to look on the Internet, you’ll see there’s at least one online interview from a recent show with Don Carlos where the reviewer applauds his fluid style and ability to still woo the ladies in the front row who attend his shows

Don Carlos is a performer who doesn’t slow down with age. Along with his touring schedule for 2017, he’s taken the time to collaborate with some more contemporary acts to make a bridge between the older versions of reggae and its newer cousins.

In the past few months, the San Diego storefront scene has been providing a complimentary dab service to the patrons of certain dispensaries. The experience varies from storefront to storefront which makes for an experience that is entertaining yet worrisome.

SCENARIO 1

While conducting research on affordable, yet local (Southern Californian based), shatters I encountered my first dab bar. Some gentlemen had lined up, awaiting their free dab. A woman prepared the oil and the rig, and administered the dab for them.

After making my purchase, the lass who assisted me offered me a complimentary dab. She was new—the other woman had gone to the back. First she alcohol swabbed the oil rig—thank goodness! Next she proceeded to torch the nail. Then she placed a cotton swab in the hot nail.

TBC: Excuse me, what are you doing?

Young Lass: It’s called Q-Tipping.

To be clear, it is not advised to place the cotton swab in the hot nail before the oil. The Q-Tip Technique is a popular cleaning method commonly used with quartz bangers. After taking a low-temperature dab, the user cleans the inside of the nail with a cotton swab. This prevents residual oil from burning and turning the nail black.

The rest of my experience was unorthodox as well. The manager had returned, and had henceforth banished the young lass.

However the influx of customers had caused the manager to make some inappropriate decisions. She turned to a friend, not an employee, and asked him to administer my dab. It was too fat. I asked for half, I know my limitations. As one who has dabbled in the practice of dabbing, I can say that I am not a novice practitioner. However after receiving my complimentary dab, I felt it necessary to sit in my car for 10 minutes before driving. The point is, dab bars are dangerous. By providing this service, storefronts are an indirect contribution to driving under the influence.

TBC: Isn’t dangerous for people to drive home?

Young Lass: Huh. I’ve never thought of that.

SCENARIO 2

While visiting a regular dispensary in North County, I encountered my second dab bar. Long story short, they didn’t clean their pieces after each use and had no regard for proper dosage. Easily tempted by the free dab, I regretted my decision again.

TBC: Isn’t it dangerous for people to drive home?

Budtender: Its cool—you live nearby.

San Diego dispensaries are taking advantage of the legalization lapse; without regulation each storefront acts autonomously, resulting in varied experiences. At first glance, the dab bar is enticing. Free oil! But the reality is they are dangerous and disgusting. Sharing pieces with everybody in town is how patients get the acne ring around their lips—fun fact. Moreover, driving under the influence is not cool. The dab bar is an exciting concept but without a designated driver, I encourage patients to refrain.

“Through networking - I would follow photographers on Instagram and they would message me about shoots.”

What do you do to stay in shape?

“I go to the gym 5 to 6 days a weeks. I am there about 1.5 hours – Cardio, Abs, Lifting. It changes, but that is the basic structure.

I believe that weed heightens my metabolism. I also host a radio show called Fitness & Cannabis. @cannabistalk101” What is Fitness & Cannabis?

“I want to provide people with more information on how you can tie fitness and cannabis together and really get the benefits out of it. A lot of people steer clear from “movement” when they are on cannabis and I want to show people that you can still exercise and lift weights while medicated. Medicating can really help with the soreness of muscles and get really good sleep so that every morning you wake up it’s like a reset button. “Building my social media – My normal day is scheduling shoots, working out, building my networking, I have a bucket list.”

“When I was little I definitely wanted to be a model or an actress – or a singer but I cannot sing.”

“Regular Show – I just love the little cartoons and I have met the animator.”

“House Hunters – I just love looking at the different types of houses that are out there.”

What were you like in high school?

“I was quiet – Not the way that I am now. I had a reduced schedule my senior year so I got my first job at McDonalds.”

Don Carlos and PLPCC staff Simple Creation

Point Loma Patient Consumer Co-op has been voted San Diego’s #1 Dispensary two year in a row and for good reasons! PLPCC Patient Appreciation Days are held monthly and is an event you do not want to miss, with past appearances by Snoop Dog, Pepper, Duddy B, Rome, Gonzo, and many others.

On February 19th PLPCC held another epic Patient Appreciation Day with special guest Don Carlos doing a meet and greet. Patients also got to enjoy live music by reggae legends like Pato Banton.

The day kicked off with give aways from vendors including Korova, Cream of the Crop, Altai, Kushy Punch, Emu, Flavrx, and several others. Music kicked off with Simple Creation from Sacramento bringing their Nor Cal vibes followed by reggae legend Pato Banton heating up the crowd.

He had the whole crowd rocking back and forth in rhythm, smiles on everyone’s faces. That was when special guest Don Carlos was called to the stage to join Pato Banton in a song, and as you can imagine it was amazing.

The Late Ones followed Pato Banton on the lineup. These boys brought down the house! With their electric energy and positive lyrics, they had everyone grooving and the stage bouncing. PLPCC closed out the evening with wonderful a performance by E.N Young.

Not only was the house packed with PLPCC patients but there were a few other familiar faces in the crowd including Kyle of Slightly Stoopid and fellow reggae artist Ranking Joe. Big thank you to DJ Cwitch for keeping tunes bumping throughout the event!

PLPCC will be hosting their next Patient Appreciation on March 17th for a St Patty’s Day Extravaganza featuring Fortunate Youth and performances by other artists including Josh Heinrichs.
