chieving your dreams is one thing, however keeping your dreams alive while you develop and expand is something that Jocko Sims has become adept at.

The 420 Book had the opportunity to sit down with this talented artist to learn more about his current projects and to find out how he keeps it all in check.

With a thriving acting career and solid resume built over the past thirteen years that includes multiple film and television series such as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Dreamgirls, Jarhead, The Last Ship on TNT, Crash on Starz, and I’m Dying Up Here, which will air in 2017.

Jocko’s most current project The Last Ship (executive producer Michael Bay) is something he’s particularly excited about. The series centers around the crew of a naval destroyer forced to confront the reality of life, after a pandemic kills off most of the planet’s population. Jocko plays Lt. Carlton Burk, a man who is not to be toyed with in this post-apocalyptic world. Jocko originally signed on for only five episodes, which has turned into five seasons. He had the opportunity to visit the crews from actual naval ships based in San Diego, “Those are the real heroes,” he says. We highly recommend streaming the first two seasons of The Last Ship on Hulu.

The most intriguing thing about Jocko is his ability to wear many hats. He works as an actor, director, producer, host and musician. For instance, Jocko co-hosts a radio show, “Apollo Night LA” with Karen, Arif, and Guy every Monday night, 7pm PST. Karen, Jocko’s mother, decided to create a forum to interact and highlight new music artists, in the spirit of New Yorks Apollo Theater. What began as an exciting Twitter campaign for his mother, has now grown into a weekly radio show that draws unsigned artists from around the world to be reviewed and critiqued. The show includes celebrity guests and musical artist from Hip-Hop to Heavy Metal who meet up in a “relaxed atmosphere” to talk shop and inspire others. (To learn more about “Apollo Night LA”, check it out on ApollonightLA.com or you can subscribe to their YouTube channel) Sims’ ties to music does not end there. While he stays focused on acting, directing, producing and writing, he also makes time for his own music projects. The 420 Book got an exclusive listen into his music endeavors and he will no doubt be turning heads and bringing a new vibe to the Southern California music scene.

We asked Jocko how he felt about the Cannabis movement, and what he sees as the future of it. “I know that it has many healing effects.” He continues, “I think it’s great, because we’re becoming more liberal as a nation, which is long overdue. Our prison population is full of people that really should not be there because of Cannabis crimes and I fully support how it can potentially help our economy.”

We couldn’t agree more with this statement.

Jocko Sims is quietly becoming a triple threat upon the Hollywood scene. When asked where he draws the strength and inspiration to tackle all of the projects he is working on, the Actor states that the formula for success is to simply “Get out of your own way”.

Time For a Trim Trimmigrants Return for the 2016 Harvest Season

Even in many of the largest-scale commercial cannabis cultivation operations, finished bud must be trimmed by hand by a human being. Trimming involves the delicate process of snipping the excess leaves off of buds that requires the human touch. The bud is too far valuable to be wasted inside a mechanism.

eginning in June and running throughout November, harvest season means big business for those living in the Emerald Triangle. The Emerald Triangle consists of Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity counties in Northern California- the nation’s largest marijuana growing industry. The area hits peak season this year, with an influx of eager trimming migrant workers, called trimmigrants. Most agree that the Emerald Triangle is the world’s best-known marijuana cultivation region.

Ever wonder where your cannabis comes from? As part of the finishing process, every bud must be manicured by hand by an annual flow of migrant workers. Trimming is not for everyone. Trimmigrants can hope to earn $150 to $300 per day, working grueling 10-15 hour shifts. Fast trimmers can expect more, up to $300-500 per day.

Trimmigrants work on commission and get paid by the pound. You can expect calloused working hands and an aching back after trimming overtime. Predictably, marijuana use and alcohol use on the clock are not unheard of in the trim camps in Northern California.

Despite all of the negative aspects, trimming pays much more than traditional migrant farmer jobs.

The remote geography of the Emerald Triangle provides sufficient stealth for largescale marijuana crops. Harvest season attracts those who vie for the coveted position as a trimmer.

The job requires nothing more than a pair of scissors, and diligent patience and stamina. They say you move the bud, not the scissors. The trimmings and most other parts of the plants are saved for processing into edibles and extracts.

California’s gold rush has been replaced with the green rush. Some property values in Humboldt and Mendocino counties have tripled. Garberville, a small town of 900, thousands of trimmigrants converge each harvest season. Garberville is considered the gateway to the Emerald Triangle, or at least one of the main entrances.

The local communities of Arcata and Eureka are also synonymous with marijuana cultivation, and see the annual flow of migrant workers.

It’s hard to calculate exactly how many trimmigrants make the migration each year, but one estimate puts the number at 150,000, with half of them coming from other countries. The Emerald Triangle supplies a great deal of the illegal marijuana circulating throughout the United States. It’s Mexican counterpart, The Golden Triangle, is composed of the states of Durango, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua. The Golden Triangle, like the Emerald Triangle, supplies massive amounts of marijuana to the surrounding areas.

Some locals have deemed trimmigrants a nuisance, thanks to unwelcome squatter camps and sketchy trim camp set-ups. The Emerald Growers Association is not a fan of unwanted trimmigrants, either. Reveal News recently released an investigative report highlighting tales of abuse that women endured while attempting to work as a migrant trimmer. Locals have said that trimming is a job best reserved for local women. Many single mothers that live in the area depend on trimming to survive. Despite all the negative stories, few trimmers have ever filed to press charges. One should never travel alone into unknown or undocumented marijuana camps.

According to reports, growers openly advertise trimming positions via Craigslist to enlist new trimmigrants. Beware, however, because The Eureka Police Department poses as growers for fake Craigslist ads offering jobs to would-be trimmers. The story is the same on Facebook.

Others have argued that trimmigrants provide a crucial labor force, without which, commercial cannabis cannot exist. Since quality marijuana must be manicured by hand, trimmers are essential to the operation. Trimming is definitely no dream job, and requires the same skills you’d need in any other similar agricultural position.

With new automated trimming machines being developed, trimming could eventually become a thing of the past. Rotary trimmers and hand held trimmers are making an entrance. Time will tell if hand-trimming will last another generation. This November is different, because California will vote on recreational marijuana which will drastically change the way of life for grow operations in Northern California.

The proponents of Prop 64 or AUMA have planned very well for this November’s election, laying out their strategy to victory via superior financial firepower and obfuscation by intertwining hundreds of pages of law and diverting everyone’s attention with the carrot called “legalization” that if truth mattered in our politics would be more correctly defined as regulatory capture!

The future is rarely a predictable event though, especially when we are talking politics and an election day that is a little over two months away. In the words of Robert Burns, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray”. Well today, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just erected a detour sign for Prop 64 leaving us to ask, will August 31, 2016 be forever known as the Billionaire Boys Club Waterloo.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just dropped a bomb, make that a MOAB (Mother of All Bombs) on Billionaire’s Sean Parker advance to overwhelm the opposition and change the marijuana landscape in California forever. Only time will tell if it’s a dud, but as we see the bomb float down onto the preparations for Prop 64’s victory party we smile, knowing the balance of power may just be about to change.

The 9th Circuit just confirmed “A federal government ban on the sale of guns to medical marijuana card holders does not violate the 2nd Amendment . . . The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals applies to the nine Western states that fall under the court’s jurisdiction, including California. It came in a lawsuit filed by S. Rowan Wilson, a Nevada woman who tried to buy a firearm in 2011 after obtaining a medical marijuana card.”

It is no secret what the Weed for Warriors Project thinks of California’s Prop 64 and we believe it is horrible law. We have written and discussed openly our disdain for the 60 plus page Proposition and it’s conjoined twin the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act or MMRSA passed into law by California’s Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown last year. By conjoined twin, we mean, MMRSA won’t survive the court system given much of MMRSA stands in direct conflict with Prop 215, California’s current supreme law of the land as it relates to Medical Cannabis.

If the old proverb, “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” holds true, the reinforcements are about to arrive and the balance of power just shifted!

For example, the last time California’s legislature and Governor tried to restrict patients’ rights was SB420 and in 2008 the appeals court ruled, “In a 3-0 decision, the court ruled: “The prosecutor’s argument was improper. It was improper because the CUA [Compassionate Use Act] can only be amended with voters’ approval. Voters, however, did not approve the eight-ounce limit and other caps in section 11362.77 [of SB420]; hence, section 11362.77 unconstitutionally amends the CUA.” The decision was later upheld by California’s Supreme Court.

See, the only thing that can overturn a “voter” passed initiative such as Prop 215 or CUA (Compassionate Use Act), is another voter passed initiative, such as Prop 64 or AUMA. So besides undermining the power of Prop 215 directing all in the case of ambiguity to side with the most recent voter initiative, what’s the big deal with a case related to guns and a Nevada mandated Marijuana ID card? Well all you California Medical Marijuana patients get ready to be forced to register with the State of California for their own version of the State ID program.

Prop 64 requires all medical marijuana patients register with the State ID system to avoid the onerous taxes put in place if AUMA passes. In addition, as widely reported, “This provision in AUMA is also how the State can collect even more money from citizens: by requiring patients to get (pay for) a medical marijuana ID card — which until MMRSA passed, has been voluntary. Why has it been voluntary? Because otherwise, forcing people get these cards is a violation of their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination (since using marijuana is still illegal under federal law). But if the federal government re-schedules marijuana, then patients would have no legal excuse to refuse to pay for a marijuana ID card. AUMA says that the ID cards will protect patients’ right to privacy, but how and why do people need an ID card to protect their right to privacy? A right is something you already have, so why should you need to buy a card to protect an existing right?”

The devil is in the details and the 9th Circuit just laid bare one big problem as it relates to Prop 64 and America’s 2nd Amendment. If you plan on using Cannabis as a Medical Patient in California and Prop 64 passes you can kiss your right to gun ownership goodbye! We believe a new front in California’s Marijuana War is about to open and we see a vulnerability the Trust Fund Club didn’t anticipate.

Caleb Wilborn, CEO of Sticky Vend Inc., is not your typical Chief Executive Officer.

He is laid back, humble, and could not care less about the “bottom line” that drives most businesses. When he isn’t crafting amazing custom surf boards, or volunteering with the nonprofit Surfers for Healing, he is hard at work running multiple businesses and innovating the world of edibles as the Head Chef of the newly released Gummy420 edible line. Caleb’s story begins where all great stories do, in the water. “As soon as I could drive, I was surfing” laughs Wilborn, but growing up in the San Diego area that is no surprise. He started making his own boards by the time he was 15 and even learned about shaping from a disciple of the great Skip Fry. As Caleb got older his love of creating custom boards grew into a business that still stands today in Oceanside, shaping boards from the ground up, and he has even infused real cannabis buds into a board design. In 2004 Surfer Magazine named him as one of the 9 Most Intriguing Surfers that year, giving him the nick name “The Roots” for his home grown shaping style and honoring his work with Surfers for Healing. This not for profit organization that gives children with Autism the opportunity to experience surfing by riding tandem with a professional, giving many children who suffer from the over sensitized aspect of Autism a few moments of joy and relief.

In 2013 he started Secrets Candy, a cannabis infused lollipop company that offers 11 flavors of lollipops containing 42 mg of THC in each. In a month they had completely learned how to hand make the candy themselves, from creating the molds to the pioneering the flavor recipes. Within a few months the secrete of Secretes Candy was out and patients were hooked. Sales to dispensaries numbered in the 3-4thousands every month, and although the lollipops were selling like hot cakes, times were not as sweet as you would think for the Head Chef and cannabis pioneer. While working to bring all these companies and products to consumers Caleb had moments where he struggled to get by. He lived in an econoline van for 6 months and at one point made rent by throwing parties in a warehouse he was squatting in. He slept in rehearsal studios when there were no beds to borrow and spent hundreds of nights on the couches of friends dreaming of how to make the world a little sweeter. The workload itself was overwhelming, “I wanted everything to be handmade artisan style” says Caleb. “We made 50,000-60,000 lollipops by hand, and I still have calluses on my fingers from personally packaging like 30,000 lollipops with a crew of only 4 or 5 people.”

Besides the cooking and packaging of the product, Caleb found that he had to spend hours delivering and learned all aspects of the business. In 2015 Sticky Vend Inc. was born to coordinate growers, dispensaries, and delivery services. Caleb then started Bullshark Marketing and Sunstroke Entertainment to continue to help small marijuana based businesses find opportunities to expand their advertising. “I think of myself as a product person.” says Wilborn, “I make surfboards, I make candy, I make brands.”

Sticky Vend also gave him even more exposure into the world of edibles. After getting the opportunity to try the best in the industry he knew that he wanted to switch gears make a great tasting, potent gummy candy that was safe and organic. “I loved that my lollipops were made from scratch. I spent so much time [while building Sticky Vend] getting to try the best that the industry had to offer but I was not impressed. Finally, I said FUCK IT. I can find a way to make a superior product the way I want to.” And he did. Gummy420 is not the only project Caleb can take pride in. He is still working to establish the company with consultant Tammie Thomas, but that has not stopped patients, which include a survivor of stage 4 prostate cancer, and even a man diagnosed with brain cancer and 10 days to live, from seeking them out. As of now Mana Cana offers a “five to one ratio of CBD to THC tincture, and an option for custom made suppositories”. The tincture and the way that it is administered will not get you high, but according to Caleb and Tammy, it may just save your life.

This latest project working with cancer patients, offering them alternative suppositories of CBD in custom dosages has actually yielded many positive results and the testimonials page, which is currently being built will be riddled with the stories of survivors who want to tell others about how their work with Caleb and Tammy has given them a 2nd chance. Although the American Cancer Society and FDA do not currently list their method as a scientifically proven way to fight cancer, Wilborn says look at the individuals who this method has helped.

Brian Johnson, from The Breakfast Club, captures the predominant attitude of the cannabis community—in regards to girls chiefing*. 2 Although this quote is from 1985, this perceptionremains the dominant attitude of many. But what does it mean to “hold your smoke”? Thehegemonic opinion of the herbal community has created a gendered landscape, with normative boundaries that affect both men and women.

Example 1

When living amongst four gentlemen stoners, I witnessed the audience effect. “Social facilitation, or the audience effect, is the tendency for people to perform

differently when in the presence of others than when alone.”

3 On the evenings when the boys had guests, it was not uncommon to see displays of hyper-masculinity. One man would challenge another, to see who could take the largest dab. The results were consistent: in the presence of hegemonic gender identities, the men felt compelled to perform.

However, just because you can take a fat rip, that doesn’t mean you can handle your high. More often than not, the gentlemen participating either passed out or threw up.

Although the men could technically “hold their smoke”, indicated by the completion of the dab, they were not prepared to handle their high.

Example 2

The emphasis on the normative and gendered boundaries in regards to smoking, has created a stigma against women and their abilities to “hold their smoke”. While sex-dependent differences in cannabinoid reactions do exist4 ; the research is minimal and dependent on several external factors. An example of this is, One-Hit Lizzy. She is a recreational marijuana user, and a dancer with 12% body fat. Because of this she is labeled as a light-weight. Her body composition and usage habits have created an environment where she will never be able to appropriately handle a dab. After her one hit, she coughs excessively and is hence forth stoned.

To conclude, gender does not affect one’s ability to “hold their smoke”. Example 1 highlights some advantages and consequences experienced by males when smoking. The second example provides an extreme alternative to the former. The results for both genders are the same: if you can’t handle your smoke, you’re a bitch.
