Sam Toft Sam Toft lives in a tall thin house by the sea in Brighton. Every day she catches a bus up to the Downs with her two lovely dogs, and they walk in the wind, rain and sunshine conjuring up new ideas of what to paint that day. Then Stan and little Betty lay snoring at the Studio while Sam starts her long day’s work, painting and drawing an imaginary world of faithful friends: Ernest Hemmingway Mustard, his dear lady wife Violet, and Doris their grumpy, portly Jack Russell Terrier. “I never get bored of tracing the adventures of my imaginary friends. Although the main characters remain constant, I love creating new friends and taking them to different places. They’ve visited the nostalgic shopfronts of New York City, hunted the legendary Sea Pasty in Cornwall, walked the Highland way in Scotland and cycled across Africa. But mostly they are to be found strolling up and down the Prom in Brighton, and then stomping through the woods, hills and meadows of the South Downs.” Sam worked in the Civil Service after gaining a BA in Business Studies and Applied Social Sciences from Kingston University. faith began when she gave up her office life and London home for a BTEC in General Art and Design at City College Liverpool.

“I never dreamt that I would one day make my living as an Artist. I’ve worked hard all my life in Catering, Accounts, office jobs, waitressing and bar work. Anything to make ends meet. But although I always loved drawing I never thought of it as a ‘proper job’... It took a whole lot of perseverance, courage, determination and practise. I absolutely love doing what I do. There is not a day goes by that I am not grateful, incredulous almost. Life has certainly got better as I’ve gotten older.” Working with oil pastels and coloured inks on board, using pencil dust, brushes, steel pen nibs and soft kitchen towels, Sam builds up layers of colour on top of simple drawings. She creates depth and texture by polishing some areas to a soft patina and scraping back other areas with kitchen forks or scrubbing with old tooth brushes. Driven by a desire to fill out her characters in all their forms, Sam writes stories and sculpts in plasticine and clay. Mr Mustard and Doris can be found cast in solid bronze, as wooden automata, jig dolls and precious handmade puppets. The most recent project is a shop for her work in Brighton alongside the smallest open exhibition space in the world housed in two beautifully restored red phone boxes. “The Little Mustard Shop and the Dog and Bone galleries are a dream come true for me. Scott Naismith Award winning Scottish landscape artist Scott Naismith has been painting full time professionally from his studio in Glasgow since graduation from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2000. He also lectures at the Creative Arts department of West College Scotland, Paisley. Regular exhibits can be found across Scotland as well as in England and the USA. Scott has amassed an incredible following of over 13,000 subscribers and over 1.6 million views on YouTube where he shows tuition and demonstration videos. The many lochs, glens and isles of the West coast are amongst his favourite subject matter for his vibrant and atmospheric oil paintings of the Scottish andscape.
Scott uses vivid colours in a vigorous application to represent
the fast changing light conditions of the West coast of Scotland. The love he has for his native Scottish countryside is portrayed in his work through an ebullient energy with which he handles the colour with palette knife and brush.

Doug Eaton Doug Eaton studied at Stroud School of Art followed in the late Sixties by Cheltenham College of Art. Doug now paints full time and works almost exclusively where he grew up in and around the Forest of Dean in Coleford, Gloucestershire, drawing inspiration for his paintings from the surroundings that he has such passion for and knows so well. Doug uses a vibrant, vivid and unexpected combination of colours and textures to capture the locations of his paintings, from viridian, cobalt and violet, to amber, cream and plum. He is interested in marrying together contrasting elements, soft against hard, hot against cold, dark against light. He currently paints in acrylics working quickly and broadly, favouring a painterly look over a clinical rendition, not minding the odd dribble here or there and using strong lines, shapes and colours to achieve an angular, refracted look that evokes the landscape.

Louise O’Hara Louise O’Hara works out of her little studio in the heart of Cheshire, surrounded by the sewing machines, boxes of vintage fabrics, typewriters and thread that she incorporates into her richly layered seascapes and landscapes. While gaining her Masters Degree in Fashion and Textiles, she discovered the Japanese aesthetic concept of Wabi-Sabi and aims to capture ‘beauty in imperfection’ in her designs. Louise is influenced by aged textures and surfaces and loves to play around with threadbare, hand dyed fabrics and hand painted papers. Substituting the pencil for her needle and thread, Louise stitches stories into her paper and uses layers and discarded items to create a sense of nostalgia and narrative in her work.

Joe Ramm lives with her husband, daughter and dog “Tinker” by the sea in Brighton. Friends with Sam Toft, Joe shares Sam’s love for walks by the sea where she plans what she’ll be painting next and she works in a studio at the end of her garden. She also has an attachment to the West Country where the wild landscapes provide a vast source of inspiration. Joe studied Illustration at the Harrow School of Art before working in London as a freelance editorial Illustrator for ten years. Following a move to Brighton, she began to paint on wood and exhibited in numerous shows including, The Battersea Contemporary Art Fair and Brighton Art Fair. She also takes part in the Brighton Open House Festival and sells through various galleries on the South Coast.

Richard Macneil Self-taught artist Richard Macneil has always worked in the creative industries in a wide range of disciplines including sculpture, ceramics, and graphics. Hazel Bowman Hazel Bowman is a self-taught artist from Scotland and specialises in charcoal, pastels and mixed media. During her time as a nurse, she carefully studied the human form and could always be found sketching whilst learning. It was soon clear that her passion was for art and drawing figures, and her portfolio of dancers began to take form. Hazel’s images beautifully capture the energy and movement of the ballerinas with a sense of magic that sees her drawings almost dance off the page. Hazel loves to draw the Scottish Ballet as well as Latvian burlesque, Russian and Argentinian dancers, and she always manages to catch that one special moment of the routine on paper.

Trudy Good The female form is both inspiration and subject for Trudy Good’s subtle and elegant portraiture. She prefers to keep the materials simple in her work, with soft paper and only one or two earthy pastel or charcoal colours. The resulting nude pieces are highly sculptural, and the use of plain background allows the spectator to concentrate on the ‘form’ of the human body. Trudy allows the models to pose themselves, so as to capture natural moments, whether they be sleep, meditation or deep thought. Trudy currently lives and works in Berkshire. Trudy Good’s work is full of human emotion. The sheer beauty of a single line, the way the light plays on hair, the feelings conveyed by body language in an unguarded moment- these are things that inspire Trudy time and time again.

Jane Bannon Norfolk born Jane Bannon is a self-taught artist specialising in stunning watercolours of farmyard and domestic animals. Art has always played an important part in Jane’s life, and after a career in insurance, she finally decided to devote herself full time to painting. She has found this to be an incredible journey and each of her days is different. She is the happiest when painting an animal, capturing and conveying its innermost thoughts to the viewer. Jane now calls the beautiful market town of Bungay, Suffolk, home. She lives in a listed cottage in the conservation area and can be found most days on Outney Common, walking her dogs Bella & Bertie. The cows who live in the fields opposite her home provide an excellent source of inspiration, along with all of the local dogs she sees on her daily walks!

(Neville and Bear) and a bunch of chickens, Sarah is never short of motivation to paint the livestock, birds of prey and wildlife that surround her. Her favourite medium is watercolour; she tries to breathe new life into the medium by using wildly vibrant colours and lively brushwork with splatters, splashes and dribbles. She loves that watercolour is unpredictable but can also be manipulated and controlled. Julia Burns Born into a very creative household in County Durham, professional artist Julia Burns studied painting at The Slade. She founded a design-led lifestyle business called Red Hen Originals in 2008, with a vision to make affordable and high-quality original art more accessible. She uses the traditional method of potato printing to produce her charming and unique images that are full of character. The beauty of her North Yorkshire location provides much inspiration, and her subjects range from the eponymous Red Hen to the many other much-loved birds and animals which share her rural surroundings. The images look equally at home in the kitchen, hanging in a boardroom or on the wall of a child’s bedroom.

Clare Sykes is an internationally published artist, whose innovative florals are characterised by three main elements – texture, passion and expressive free movement. Painting predominantly in acrylics before adding inks and oil, Clare builds it up into an image with great vibrancy and depth. She leaves the paint to flow freely, before manipulating it to create layers so that it can evolve naturally into the final image. Clare works from her home studio, always in silence as complete serenity is an essential ingredient of her creative process. The outside world may be full of noise and colour, but she prefers to be cocooned in her studio, alone with her imagination, emotions and paints. Despite being based in the studio, Clare’s experience in the outside world feeds into her work, particularly the many years she spent living in the Mediterranean which influences her use of colour. Soozy Barker Soozy Barker is an experienced professional artist who creates contemporary, mixed media artworks. Initially trained by her Father, Jon Barker, (himself an internationally published artist), Soozy has developed her own unique style and specialist techniques. Her painting process requires hours of blending, pouring, splashing and flicking, often using 20-30 brushes and various palette knives, metallic acrylics, spray paints, oil paints, gold and silver leaf, mixing and thinning mediums, and paint stained pieces of wood to use as edges. “I can spend hours without leaving the easel, the blending and pouring process becomes almost hypnotic. I can’t leave a piece until I’m completely happy. The surface of the paint has to be as serene as the feeling the image gives the viewer.”

She loves to use watercolour, ink and gouache to create bright pops of colour and hand-lettering, and incorporates a broad range of motifs into her work but has an affinity for painting animals, foliage and intricate patterns. Cat loves to travel and what better way to get creatively recharged than by travelling around the world with her camera, capturing motifs that she incorporates into her artwork. Some of her most recent pieces are inspired by trips to Peru, Vietnam, Hawaii and the American Southwest. Kathryn McGovern Australian artist Kathryn McGovern explores her interest in human nature, natural history, superstition and folklore in her whimsical drawings. She uses traditional drawing materials to study the nature of drawing and the art of making meaningful marks in a conceptual process. Kathryn is inspired by automatic drawing and Surrealism, with both subconscious internal experiences and external influences feeding her work. Her source material is often a photograph or object which she uses as a starting point to explore anthropomorphic themes, animal symbolism and environmental issues with subject matter that can often be lighthearted and even humorous but may also offer comments advocating social change.

Living in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three boys, Lyndy works from home in her studio to create her Scandi-inspired designs. After studying Art and Design in Melbourne, she worked on a variety of projects, but it was when she bought her first Mac that she knew she had found her “home”. It was after taking a career break to spend time with her children that Little Design Haus was born and she has never looked back.
