Welcome The Bridge’s Editing Academy is a two year course providing a unique opportunity to enter into the exciting world of editing. An editor’s “boot camp”. Not only will it give you a thorough understanding of the technical and creative aspects of editing, but it will also give you the elusive ability to get inside a clients’ head and understand what they want.

The Bridge’s Editing Academy will be your pathway in becoming an editor.

It is as much a course in psychology as it is in the craft of editing. Over the two years you will experience not only traditional training, but also work real placements. You will have current working editors as mentors as well as experience a host of other training methods.

The Common Room

The Bridge will be your partner throughout the journey of becoming an editor. Successful graduates will be eligible to join the books of leading talent agency The Crewing Company at a suitable level, in order to kick-start their career. The Crewing Company normally only takes on editors with years of experience. However, as partners in this project, they are sharing our commitment to nurturing new talent. Every participant in the course will get help finding a job. * Our aim is for every student to become gainfully employed.

We keep the course relevant to the most up to date technologies and working practices by continually taking advice from current industry practitioners and employers. Not only will you have training, you will also have many networking opportunities to help you succeed in getting a job.

We provide technical, creative, management and leadership training to the creative industries Most of the software and hardware used by these industries are supported by our training. All our trainers are leading practitioners in their field, and are active in the industry. All of our hardware and software is state-of-the-art industry specific. Our purpose built training centre is equipped with everything you need to learn in a comfortable, energising and inspiring environment.

We provide a bespoke service, which will mould the course to you rather than you to the course. Our main training centre has some of the best transport links available in the UK. It’s less than 5 minutes walk from Hackney Wick Station and one stop away from Stratford International main line station, with a bus stop a few minutes away. It also benefits from being less than 100 metres from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Course Modules Overview All modules are supported by seminars, coaching, weekly mentor conversations and one to one tuition. The courses are fluid enough to be able to cater for your individual needs. Pressing the right buttons Students will understand how to operate Avid, Apple and Adobe editing equipment to a high standard.*

Media Management This module addresses how you manage and log your footage. We look at both tape and tapeless media and explores bin structures and the best ways to manage media depending on the style and genre of the programme.

Study of Narrative You will obtain a high level understanding of TV and Film narrative, and will learn to think like an editor. You will learn how to construct stories that both engage and captivate an audience.

This module also covers back-up, confidentiality and security issues surrounding media.

Practical Documentary editing In this module you will edit your own documentary under the supervision of both your tutor and editing mentor. This will be your first step in constructing a story from scratch and an introduction to working with a client. You will gain insights into how many different ways there are to tell a story and learn how to construct and engaging narrative. This will include writing commentary and designing a look and feel. Timeline Management The difference between a good editor and a great editor is coming up with the goods on time. During this module you will learn how to make creative decisions quickly and not to get ‘blocked’ during the creative process. You will also learn how to ‘run’ an edit by leading your director and other production staff to keep the edit moving. This module will address your confidence and ability to lead people. * Equipment may be changed without notice.

The Design Room


Course Modules Overview (cont’d) Client Handling Skills

This is, in effect, a psychology module. It deals with how to engage and communicate with clients. You will learn how to handle your clients when they are stressed and stay creative when under pressure.

Anatomy of the Industry

This module explains the anatomy of production and post-production companies and gives insight to where the editor sits within it. You will gain an understanding of who does what in a production and the chain of command and working practices of production, post and broadcaster.

Self-Management

As per documentary editing. You will be editing your own drama over the course of a few weeks, and will obtain a deeper understanding of drama storytelling and pacing. You will be taught how to lead an audience and how subtle editing differences can take an audience in all sorts of

This module addresses some of the more practical aspects to being a freelance editor. You will learn how to invoice, manage your accounts. You will gain valuable insights and contacts from seasoned professionals regarding how to manage your financial affairs and conduct yourself through your career.

You will learn how to get the best out of an actors’ performance, how to interpret the script and to be able to add your creativity in order to tell a story.

Work Placements

Nearing the end of the course you will have the opportunity to go to work. Along with The Crewing Company, we will arrange you real work. Real work is a different experience to training and, guided by your tutors and mentor, we will help you through your first steps in your career. We will be available to make the process go as smoothly as possible. If you do a great job, you may find yourself with a client for life! It may seem like a long way off now, however after the training you will stand out from the crowd.

Shooting Skills

To help understand the constraints of a shoot, this module has you shoot and edit your own footage; both drama and documentary. Good editors have an understanding of shooting styles and also have an ability to ‘read the rushes’. By experiencing the shooting process you will gain invaluable knowledge of how this process works. This experience will also help you understand how directors work and will be an invaluable aid to your editing abilities.

Practical Light Entertainment Editing

The third of the practical editing modules has you edit a light entertainment show. A different discipline from drama and documentary editing, this module gives you experience in the pacing and narrative of Light Entertainment.
