An Upper School student’s experience is shaped by the educational foundations of the school: critical, independent, and creative thinking; ethical judgment motto, “Experience Education,” is highlighted in both the academic and co-curricular programs. The city of Seattle, the natural resources of the Pacific Northwest, and international study provide a rich context for this learning. Students here master critical thinking, writing, and research skills in an environment that encourages faculty to draw on their expertise and passions to create innovative electives and projects.

Advanced Placement (AP): The Bush School does not follow a formal AP curriculum but students may choose to sit for AP exams each spring. In the Classes of 2016–2018, 86 students took a total of 190 AP exams and 89% of these exams resulted in a score of 3 or higher.

STUDENT LIFE & COMMUNIT Y The Bush School asks students to help make the world a better place. Opportunities for involvement in every facet of school life support students in identifying areas of individual passion and talent. Students work side-by-side with faculty and Board members on committees for hiring, diversity, planning, and curriculum. Major student organizations with significant leadership opportunities include Amnesty International, Student Awareness Council, Class Office, Environmental Committee, Blazers of Color, White Students Combatting Racism, Sexuality & Gender Alliance, Junior State of America, Rambler (school newspaper), Senate, Social Committee, Tykoe (yearbook), Venue, and the Writing and STEM Centers. Interscholastic athletic competition is available in baseball, basketball, bowling, cross-country running, cross-country skiing, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, Ultimate Frisbee, and girls’ volleyball. Bush belongs to the Emerald City League, Division 1A.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS Action Module Program (AMP) and Wilderness Program: AMP, The Bush School’s

mandatory experiential learning program, brings students out of the traditional classroom two hours a week during the fall and winter trimesters and for a full week each spring. Students may also design an AMP in conjunction with a faculty advisor and all students must complete at least three community service AMPs in the areas of Service at Bush, Service in the Community, and Civic Engagement during their tenure at Bush. Past AMP offerings include Methow Campus: Blazing Trails and Building Relationships, Innovation lab, Stage Combat, Women in Leadership, Glassblowing, Working on the Mind at the Aegis Retirement Center, Prison Transformation, and Introduction to Meditation. The Wilderness Program oversees courses such as Mountaineering in the Cascades, Sailing in the San Juan Islands, Avalanche Essentials: Decision Making and Risk in the Backcountry, and Mt. Baker Expedition.

Senior Projects: In this three-week capstone experience, students propose and

design projects that tie into at least one of the three educational foundations of The Bush School. Above all, Senior Projects must make a difference in the greater community. Past projects include: Building a Quadcopter Drone, Internship at the School for Ethics and Global Leadership, Field and Trail Guide for The Bush School Methow Campus, Internship at The Sierra Club, Voices: LGBTQ Multimedia Project, creation of a Self-balancing Two Wheeled Electric Vehicle, and Wai Ola – Hawaiian rain drum installation.

Intercultural Immersion Programs: The Bush School believes that local and global

citizenship, and intercultural fluency, are best learned experientially. Our students experience other cultures by forming relationships, living, studying, and working with a given local population. All programs are immersive and structured around open-ended essential questions, providing curricular focus, and opportunities for critical thinking and action in addition to the cultivation of self-awareness, leadership, humility, and the practice of being global citizens. Programs include: The Global Public Service Academies, Global Visionaries, Eimeikan School exchange in Japan, International School of Asia, Passepartout Exchange Program with Lycee Victor Hugo, and the Network Program.
