Welcome The Drum is the UK’s premier Black-led arts centre dedicated to the development, presentation and celebration of African, Asian and Caribbean arts and cultural activities for the benefit of all. Our autumn season for 2013, comes hot off the heels of a very successful summer season during which many of the shows at The Drum sold-out, an estimated fifteen thousand family revellers attended the Simmer Down Festival in Handsworth Park, new communities were attracted to the Balsall Heath Carnival as part of our Arts Champion’s contribution to the Hall Green Constituency and hundreds of young people participated in our Summer School as part of the Young People’s Programme. Rooted in the heart of north Birmingham, The Drum as an arts hub is at the forefront of championing Birmingham’s cultural diversity. Our artistic programme offers a range of activities, which attract many first time attendees to the arts as audiences, participants and as active practitioners. In real terms, our unique offer is realised through partnerships and programmes like Sonia Audhali’s exhibition portraying the West Midland’s Yemeni community, the Four Fathers exhibition documenting experiences of South Asian fathers and sons, the Continuous Journey film premier highlighting the plight of Indian migrants, the debut concert by Aar Maanta, the voice of the new generation of Somalis in the UK, the DEAR BIRMINGHAM BOOK LAUNCH by Karamat Iqbal exploring Birmingham’s Pakistani community. Together with our usual mix of Language Theatre Sora Cool Jawayi Fool in Punjabi, Maari Honey-Ne Behave Money in Guajarati and Jamaican Comedy Theatre, The G Spot by Ricky Rowe and an all-star stage presentation of Jamaica’s legendary comedy Smile Orange. Our autumn highlights includes the official 2013 launch of Black History Month Birmingham (BHM), which this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the pinnacle of America’s Civil Rights Movement, the March on Washington and Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. An eclectic mix of associated BHM events and activities celebrate the struggles, achievements and contributions of UK’s African, Asian and Caribbean communities including a major archival exhibition Back in the Day presented in partnership with Autograph ABP. In addition to the above we promise to entertain you with an array of comedians courtesy of Upfront Comedy and the Jongleurs’ Comedy Club, for the Reggae connoisseurs we’ve assembled a spectacular line-up of the hottest artists coming straight out of Jamaica for the big Reggae Salute concert. A specially designated programme of creative workshops and projects for Young People, as well as, outreach initiatives supplement the overall programme - ensuring that there is something for everyone. So this autumn come and join us and experience the unique range of arts and cultural activities provided by The Drum.

By bus From the City Centre take the number 33 or 51 bus from Lower Bull Street (next to Poundland), or the number 7, which leaves from Livery Street. Alight at Newtown Swimming Baths / Bartons Arms.
By train The Drum is a short distance from local Birmingham stations including New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill.
By car From the M6: Leave at Junction 6, onto the A38(M) a short way along the A38(M), take the exit sign posted Aston / Waterlinks. The roundabout at the top exit is Park Circus. Take the second exit onto Victoria Road. Turn left onto Upper Sutton Street and then right at the bottom onto Park Lane. Before you approach the crossroads / next set of lights there is a slip road to turn left. This is Potters Lane. The Drum’s car park is on your left directly as you turn left.

From Birmingham City Centre: Take the A38 towards Aston (under the tunnels/underpass towards the M6). Go over the Aston Expressway and merge left, off the A38 and onto the ring road towards Dartmouth Circus roundabout. Keep in the left-hand lane and go straight over the roundabout. As you exit off the roundabout the overhead sign is marked Thomas Street – go straight up Thomas Street and turn left at the top of the road on to Park Lane (you will see East End Foods on your right). Just before the traffic lights, take the slip road on the left, this is Potters Lane. The Drum’s car park is on your left directly as you turn left. Free parking outside, Disabled spaces are also available.

Every year local and national musicians and artists come together to pay their respects. Ansar Khalid will perform alongside an extraordinary ensemble of musicians to recreate some of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s unforgettable Qawwalis, along with his own compositions.

Lascar Book Launch Thu 24 Oct, 6pm Free Admission Author Shahida Rahman discusses her latest publication Lascar, an epic story of one man’s journey to fulfil his destiny after discovering his brother has cancer, and how his life changes. Leaving poverty-stricken Bengal emulating their late father by becoming a Lascar, shovelling coal in the bowels of the steamships trading between India and England. The brutal reality of this existence leaves Ayan fearing for his life.

Muslim pupils are already the majority religious group in the local schools. Ever since the days of the Lunar Men, Birmingham has been a leader of cities. But, can it sustain this success without the active involvement of its Pakistani community? Dear Birmingham, written by author Karamat Iqbal, an adopted son of the city, comments on race relations and draws attention to the wholesale exclusion of Pakistani-Brummies from centres of opportunities and power. He asks: Is it time for positive action strategies, even a new social contract, to be put in place?

Continuous Journeys: Screening and Q&A Sun 6 Oct, 7:30pm Free Admission The Ghadar Commemoration Centenary Project of the The Asian Rationalist Society (Britain) is proud to screen, Continuous Journey as part of Black History Month. The film will be introduced by internationally renowned human rights lawyer, Professor Satvinder Juss, followed by a discussion chaired by Raj Wider Pal will follow the screening. The acclaimed Canadian Director Ali Kazimi’s film is an inquiry into the largely ignored history of Canada’s exclusion of the South Asians by a little known immigration policy called the Continuous Journey Regulation of 1908. Unlike the Chinese and the Japanese, people from British India were excluded by a regulation that appeared fair, but in reality, was an effective way of keeping people from India out of Canada until 1948. Autograph ABP Archive in Focus: Back in the Day Fri 27 Sep - Thu 31 Oct Free Admission An exhibition of photographs drawn from Autograph ABP’s unique archive featuring the work of James Barnor, Neil Kenlock, Syd Shelton and Vron Ware among others. The twenty-five images, some exhibited here for the first time, span more than fifty years with a focus on the period of 1968 – 1978. They poignantly illustrate the different experiences and struggles faced by Black and Asian migrants in their bid to settle in the UK: ordinary people uniting against social discrimination and racist attacks, as well as celebrating the emergence of different communities in the changing landscape of a post-war, culturally diverse Britain. An Autograph ABP exhibition curated by Renée Mussai. An accompanying broadsheet newspaper publication is available for £2.

Four Fathers Exhibition Tue 5 Nov - Thu 28 Nov Exhibition Launch: Tue 5 Nov, 6pm Free Admission The Four Fathers Exhibition documents and records in film, photography and on-line the experiences of South Asian grandfathers, fathers and sons in Birmingham. In doing so, several questions were raised about inter-generational relationships, what are the similarities and differences between generations? What things are passed on or not? Which traditions last and which do not? The resultant photographic exhibition, film and website illustrate those responses, capturing things that unique or repeated across generations.

As a British born Yemeni raised in England, Sonia Audhali’s photographs exhibit not only an image of one nation and its culture integrating with another, but also a trace of autobiography. Audhali’s identity as both British and Yemeni instinctively influences her approach to capturing a dual heritage of which there is little in the way of published and public evidence in the UK. The Official Launch of Birmingham Black History Month 2013 Fri 27 Sep, 6pm Admission by Invitation Only The official Launch of Birmingham Black History Month (BHM) this year commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. On Wed 28 Aug 1963, Dr King addressed over two hundred and fifty thousand civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The speech was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement and is regarded as the most iconic American speech of the 20th century. The BHM Launch will include performances in Dance, Visual Arts, Spoken Word and Music which have been specially commissioned by The Drum, which interpret Dr King’s speech. A feature on the night includes Punch Records: We Live The Dream, which celebrates King’s legacy through words and music, featuring new and original compositions from UK leading contemporary artists. This includes the TV favourites Trinity Band aka TTB, Dancehall toaster and Radio 1 resident MC Serocee, lyrical maverick Paigey Cakey and much more, supported by inspiring and informative art, media and graphics. During summer school, the Young Gifted Brum (YGB) creative team and young people have been using Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech as inspiration for new pieces of work. From a dance interpretation of the March on Washington to a monologue of being a woman in the Civil Rights’ era, you can see one of their performances and take part in an associated workshop to extend your understanding of this history creatively.

Arts Development To mark Martin Luther King’s defining speech, Seasick Soul poets Jaden Larker and Amerah Saleh have been working with young people thirteen to nineteen years of age in the Hall Green district, developing spoken word performances inspired by the ‘I Have a Dream’. These free performances are scheduled to take place at the following community libraries across the Hall Green district, during Black History Month.

Simmer Down Festival 2013 It just keeps getting bigger and better:
On Sun 14 Jul, Simmer Down was back for the fourth year in a row. After a hugely successful Simmer Down Festival last year The Drum, in partnership with Perry Barr Constituency Arts Forum, was pleased to bring Simmer Down 2013, back to Handsworth Park and this year was even better attended than last year with over 12,000 people. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and it didn’t take long for groups of families and friends to start gathering with their picnic blankets to bask in the sun while the music washed over them.

The participation tent was full of activity all day which wrapped up just in time for everyone to move down the hill and enjoy the headline acts. Without you it would not have been such a success, so a big thanks you all. It was a wonderful day and we are proud to have once again provided a free, relaxing, safe and fun packed day out for all the family. Throughout 2013 The Drum in its role as Arts Champion has delivered a range of projects and activities with arts organisations and community groups, across the Hall Green district. Working in partnership with Hall Green Arts Forum, hosting regular Arts Surgeries in Balsall Heath, Hall Green, with further ones taking place in Sparkbrook, Springfield, Moseley and Kings Heath. Highlights of the year include Balsall Heath Carnival where entertainment was hosted by John Simmit and included, Azad Kashmiri Folk Group, reggae artist Meddy Ranks, up and coming RnB singer Brooklynne, Azaad Dhol Group, Gospel Central and Dub Poet Kokumo. The Drum also delivered workshops with children of Calthorpe Park Play Centre. Simmer Down 2013 workshop and arts participation activities were a huge success, delivered in partnership with Birmingham Hippodrome, Oya Batacuda, Birmingham Opera Company, Espirito Brum, Grove School and Perry Barr Arts Forum.
In partnership with Ort Gallery, The Drum delivered a workshop as part of the Front Room Exhibition, with artists Malgorzata Adamowska and Famina B, inviting members of the community to come and share their own stories, memories and bring items that represent their own personal journey and migration. The Drum provided technical support and artists Azad Kashmir Folk Group working in partnership with Sparkbrook Neighbourhood Forum to deliver the Sparkbrook Games 2013. Langley Youth Community Centre - Sitting on the Wall. The aim of this project was for young people of Langley to use art as a tool to open up conversations with residents to explore the diverse community, breaking down barriers of intolerance, creating positive community cohesion based on respect. Led by visual artist Suki Dhaliwal, young people on the project have taken part in a six week programme of arts activities including photography, graphic design and film leading up to the production of their final illustrations.
