Whether playing an intimate accoustic show, or an astounding, energy-packed live event, Jesse Quandt never fails to deliver true entertainment. Gallop is excited to have him join the ranks of helping RMHC families! Behind the Story ‘Giving Back... with RMHC Child, Santana’

All of this excitement and support helps the Gallop Stallion Services Auction meet its primary goal of raising funds to help the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest continue their mission of helping hundreds of families. Check out all of this year’s performers on Gallop’s Facebook page, or on our website, www.GallopAuction.com. Imagine if your child was sick. What would you do if you had to fly to a hospital in a different city far from your home? Would you know where to go? When you arrived at the hospital, where would you put your extra clothes? Where would you shower? Where would you wash your clothes? Who would you turn to for help? These and many other questions are all answered daily by the volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest. Families are provided temporary lodging, comfort and support while their children are accessing medical services

Even a Ronald McDonald House child understands the gift of giving as being truly priceless... At the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Inland Northwest, six-year-old Santana’s face lights up as he remembers the day that Wigs for Kids came to visit. Two of his friends, Gabby and Stephania, had recently shaved their heads and were quiet and sad. All of that changed for a few minutes when they were handed their wigs. For Santana, this triggered an idea: he decided that he would grow out his hair and donate it so that other kids with cancer could experience the same kind of joy. Such empathy would be impressive for any 6-year-old, but even more so for one in Santana’s shoes. Just weeks before, what doctors originally thought were attention problems and heartburn turned out to be Leukemia. In the blink of an eye Santana was pulled out of school in his distant city, and sent to Spokane for a blood transfusion. During his treatment he stayed at the Ronald McDonald House off and on for the next thirty-nine months. When Santana’s hair started falling out he and his dad Homar shaved their heads together. When Santana’s hair started growing back he told his dad about his plan and informed him that he too needed to grow out his hair. Homar couldn’t argue. Their act of Green Mountain Davy Crockett Pellet kindness inspired twenty Grill (donated by FMI Equipment of two other family members Spokane) to be Auctioned Off at the and friends, who also 2019 Gallop decided to grow their hair out to donate to kids with cancer. Santana finished his treatment and was officially declared cancer free in January 2015. That same month, he, his dad, and friends and family worked with a local barber who

Santana’s desire to help stems from a simple motivation: despite the difficult circumstances that brought him to Spokane, many of his happiest memories from those three years were at the Ronald McDonald House. He remembers the dance parties he and his friends would have when someone was having a bad day, hanging out with his friend David in the Sponge Bob room, and his Grandma coming to the House to make him tamales. As Santana’s mom Michelle puts it, “If it wasn’t for the Ronald McDonald House of the Inland Northwest, we wouldn’t have made it.” This was the least we could do to help pay it forward…You need to love on each other. It’s the only way you get through.” That empathy and compassion are traits clearly passed on to Santana, and felt by the hundreds of families who will benefit from his kindness.

On The edge Of COmmOn SenSe

Ol’ ROanie By Baxter Black, DVM

“How ya doin’ Skip?” I asked. “Okay, I guess,” he said. “Remember my good rope horse?” I remembered. Skip, like me is left-handed and therefore requires a left-handed heelin’ horse. Whenever I’m in southern New Mexico he lets me borrow ol’ Roanie. Last time I had been to his place to rope I got there early so I saddled up and was warmin’ up the horse. I didn’t remember him bein’ quite so belligerent and feisty. He made a couple stops where I had to grab the horn! When Skip arrived he explained why Roanie was actin’ up. It wasn’t Roanie. It was the other horse. The other horse, which had a big scar on his shoulder, was also a roan. He was the flotsam of a relationship gone bad. Skip had wanted to sell him but the now departed love interest had insisted he keep him so they could go on romantic rides together. Skip roped on him now and then but

it was always a risky venture. He kept thinkin’ if he roped on him enough, he might make a good horse. “Yeah,” I said, “I remember ol’ Roanie.” “Well, I just crippled him. And to top it off, the week before I’d gone down to Sullivan’s and ordered a brand new slant WW two-horse trailer with all the trimmings. It has the ladder, optional large hayrack on top, extra long tongue, red and white pin striping. Did I tell you it was a slant? Has walk-in tack storage in the front. “I figgered it was a Christmas present for myself since I didn’t have to buy anyone a diamond this year. And then Roanie got crippled. Dang!” “It looks to me,” I said, “that you might as well buy yourself two Christmas presents. Get a new horse. Sell the old one.” “I’m...I’m not sure,” he stuttered. I went into my lecture about how horses aren’t people and there is not much point hangin’ onto a horse you can’t use. I’ve seen too many people hang onto a horse that limps, jigs, bites or bucks or is just too much horse for them. I explain to these people they are not obligated to maintain a horse the rest of its life just because it cost $1500. It was a bill of sale, not adoption papers. I warmed to the subject using my nursing home analogy, the price of killer horses and the plethora of good horseflesh available. “Life’s too short,” I concluded, “to spend good money on a horse out of a misguided sense of obligation.” Skip said, “You know yer right. I am gonna sell him! He’s

HAS ANYTHING CHANGED ON THE VACCINE FRONT? Dr. Bob Peters, McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital

It is not very often that there are any big changes with respect to horse vaccinations. horsemanship Really the last big thing was the addition of West Nile to our vaccination protocols about ten years ago. This upcoming spring we are switching to a new product from Zoetis. They are an old company we have used and trusted for years. Zoetis is the animal segment that Dr. Bob Peters, DVM split from the human company Pfizer many years ago. They have developed a new vaccine for this year called Core Eq. It is a combination of the five “core vaccines” as identified by the AAEP. (American Association of Equine Practitioners) veterinary knowledge

agel es s

A “Core Vaccine” is defined here by the American Veterinary Medical Association: The AVMA defines core vaccinations as those “that protect from diseases that are endemic to a region, those with potential public healtwh significance, required by law, virulent/highly infectious, and/or those posing a risk of severe disease. Core vaccines have clearly demonstrated efficacy and safety, and thus exhibit a high enough level of patient

benefit and low enough level of risk to justify their use in the majority of patients.” The five core vaccines identified by the AAEP are: Tetanus, West Nile, Eastern Encephalitis, Western Encephalitis and Rabies. Obviously, there are other necessary vaccinations. What sets the five core diseases apart is there is the high incidence of death in horses that contract one of those diseases and/or the disease is also a public health risk. First of all, let’s be clear. The “Core Vaccines” are NOT the only vaccinations that your horse needs. Flu, Rhino and Strangles are not included in this new Core vaccine. Any one of those three diseases occur at a fantastically higher rate than all five of the Core diseases combined. So, what is all the hubbub about? Four of the five Core vaccines were included in the 5 Way + WNV we have administered for years. The only new addition to Core Eq is Rabies. Less than 5% of our clients vaccinate their horses for Rabies. I’ll come clean here. I did not vaccinate my own horses against Rabies. It is such a low incidence disease and the separate vaccination was an extra $20-$25 per horse. But…If lightening happened to strike your horse, it would be catastrophic. Rabies is a 100% death rate disease. Furthermore, it is so rare that when it happens the most common first diagnosis is either colic or choke. By the time the correct diagnosis is arrived at, many humans have been exposed. That is scary.

The great news is Zoetis has developed this Core vaccine and Rabies is included. We will now be recommending all horses receive two vaccinations. Core Eq and a Flu Rhino. Here is the great part. The cost of the combination of those two vaccines is the same as the old 5 Way + West Nile. Kudos to Zoetis, they are basically throwing in Rabies for free! The other bonus is the separate Flu/Rhino is more efficacious than when combined in the 5 Way.

SENSIBLE ROUND PENNING - DIRECTIONAL CONTROL By Ann Kirk

Happy New Year! I pray you had a good holiday season. 2019 is now upon us. Lord, help us to seek what you have for us and to rejoice in each day. Did you practice with your motivating tool during the past few months? Are you getting “good” at throwing the rope with both hands and hitting your target on the fence? And then getting it wound back up quickly to be ready for the next correction? Well, don’t worry if you aren’t there yet. I still have to stop and untwist my rope occasionally but I just see it as a good opportunity to rest. Being willing and persistent and having a good attitude goes a lot farther than having a “perfect” rope handling ability. So, with all that said, let’s get started. Put your horse in the round pen and remove all equipment. If the horse is hard to halter, leave the halter on for the purpose of moving him to another pen when finished with this segment of the lesson. By the end of the next article, you should be able to easily halter your horse and won’t need to leave the halter on. By removing all equipment from the horse, it gives him more of a sense of freedom to move about as he chooses, making the results more dramatic. The purpose of the Round Pen is to gain control of the horse mentally by controlling him physically without being attached in any visible form. To do this, you must find something that you can control and build upon it. You already

know that you cannot control the horse’s ability to move. The strongest halter and the biggest tree cannot make a horse keep still if it really wants to move. It may not be going anywhere but it can still be moving its feet. Nor can you control his gait or speed. But you can decide that he has to move; that he cannot refuse to go when you cue and you can control when and how he turns when changing directions. So this is your starting point. “First, get the feet to move. Then get them to move consistently; then take them in the direction you want them to go”, (quote from John Lyons). Start by sending the horse to the left around the pen. Why left? Because it is specific and being specific in your training let’s you “know” when you get the correct response. The gait of choice is a trot but if he chooses to lope, that is okay for now. He will slow down as the lesson progresses. If he tries to change directions, quickly turn him back to the left until he

My goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible. You are personally invited to come and join this fun-filled, incredible journey that will make your goals a reality!

quits trying to turn on his own. This will be his first clue that you are controlling him even though you are not attached to him. At first, he will think he is running away and you have no control. But, he will soon catch on that you are telling him if and when to change directions. When he is going consistently to the left, ask him to turn and go right. Keep him going right until he quits trying to turn back and then ask him to go left again. When he becomes consistent, only send the horse around 1-3 times before asking for a turn. You are not trying to tire him out. You are working on his submission to your control over his direction and movement. If he seems to be running wildly in a panic, do lots of turns, only letting him go half to three quarters of the way around before doing a turn. Practice this until the horse will stay going in a fairly calm manner and turn only when asked. In some cases, your horse may be so comfortable with you that you cannot chase him off. This is okay. I will work most horses from the rail in to me. But there are some that I must work from in by me out to the rail then back. This is done by putting the halter and lead on and teaching them a “go forward” cue with a whip or a lead line. I teach them to yield their shoulder and to go forward when asked and then, when I remove the halter, I can cue them to leave and they will leave. Don’t get in a face-off with your horse. If the horse is not leaving because it is “safe” with you, you don’t want to loose that connection by teaching him you are not “safe”. If the horse will not move because he considers himself to be

the dominate partner, you could get hurt by creating a power struggle. Also, if you don’t succeed, you have strengthened his position. So, break it down to a simpler step, teach him to leave in a clear controlled manner and then proceed with success. Now, you can teach the inside turns. This is when the horse brings his nose towards the center of the pen as he is changing directions. At first, the horse will make an inside turn only because you will not let him make an outside turn. Eventually, he will associate your positioning with what kind of turn you want him to make. To cue an inside turn, you want to think of having a line attached to a halter. As the horse is going left, mentally cut the pen in thirds and walk towards the fence while watching the horse’s eyes, ears, head, etc. Imagine you are pulling his nose towards you as you cut him off. If he turns to the outside, immediately send him on left and ask again. Be patient! This may take several times before the horse “tries” the inside turn as an alternative. He is searching for the release and he can only guess until he gets it right. You let him know he is right by releasing the pressure. When he realizes that he cannot turn away, he may just slow and stop. Get him moving and ask again. You must have the forward movement to get the turn. When he does make the correct turn, release the pressure and just barely keep him moving for 1-2 rounds. Do 5-10 inside turns from the left before working on the right. It will be easier on you and the horse to not try the inside turn from both directions right away. At this

point, let the horse walk anytime he wants as long as he is responding immediately to your request to change directions. If he doesn’t, pick up the emotion by increasing his speed enough to make it count. When you have both directions, do 20-30 repetitions before starting to teach the outside turn. Some people choose to never teach the outside turn. Times when I would not would be if I thought the horse might try to jump over the pen. This could result in injuries and would not be worth the risk. Also, if the horse has a habit of always running away from me, I would want to establish the inside turns firmly in his mind. In these cases, I would practice the inside turn 150-300 times just turning left and right, left and right. You will see some amazing results just from this one lesson if you will persist in the repetitions. But there are many times when the outside turn is more important than the inside turn. If a horse constantly wants to stand over me or stand on me in a rude way, not considering my space, teaching the outside turn is a yielding move and will translate to consideration on the halter. Also, it is very important if you have a horse that is aggressive in any way. I have been charged by horses while doing the inside turns and will immediately go to the outside turn for control. These horses are dangerous so be careful. I can do many outside turns, then stop the horse along the fence and teach the inside turn from a standing position with them at a distance that keeps me safe.

The outside turn is taught by pushing the nose away from you as you cut the horse off. Step more forward, raising your rope towards the nose. If it appears that the horse will run over you, let it past and ask again. If he makes the wrong turn, immediately turn the horse back, send him on and ask again. If the horse is very ingrained to do inside turns, you can usually get the outside turn by asking for the inside turn and then pushing his nose all the way through so he does a complete circle and continues in the same direction. When he begins to understand your cue, then do them without using the inside turn. When he is doing the outside turn consistently upon request, mix them up. Inside turn left; outside turn right, outside turn left; inside turn right and so on. This will solidify the cues for you and him. This can be done as slow as the horse chooses as long as he is responsive to your requests. It is not about the speed but about the obedience. Well, I can go on and on as you can tell but it is getting too long. Go out and practice this much with your pal and we will continue on next time. If you have any questions, go to my website, e-mail me and I will help you troubleshoot. I am all about you succeeding with your horse so don’t hesitate to ask. Take care and be careful so the days ahead can be full of fun. God Bless you and keep you safe. For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Programs, go to www.annkirk.com. Winter Activities By Ken Carmichael

Now that snow is on the ground and it is colder, some of us turn our attention to things other than riding down the trail. I am speaking about those of us that are fair weather riders and without an indoor arena. This does not mean that we totally divorce ourselves from the horses. After all, many of us are still out there at least twice a day to feed them and check the water. Some even have to clean stalls. Winter can be a special time to get other projects done. This includes checking and cleaning our tack. Two things we do not want to happen during the primary riding season are to have our tack out of commission for cleaning or repair or, to have a serious accident due to our tack. So my answer for this is get after it now. This winter, after the Super Bowl, I will bring all the tack inside for a good cleaning. This is a major project as it takes several days to take apart each saddle, wash, oil and reassemble. This process gives the additional benefit of providing us a good time to really take a hard look at the tack and see what needs repair.

There are many benefits. First is safety. Damaged or weekend tack can result in a nasty accident with unfavorable results. PONDEROSA CHAPTER Second, tack can end up at the repair shop when we want to be riding. Third, tack will last much longer when property cared for. What about those saddlebags? This assumes that we all carry saddlebags with first aid and survival equipment. This is important wherever we ride or for how far. Winter is a good time to spread these supplies out on the table and evaluate them. Are you carrying everything you need, are there things you do not need, do you know how to use them and are the items in good repair and not out of date? It behooves us all to carry at least a small quantity of supplies. For example, if everyone carries one vet wrap and gauze when there is a major injury we combine our resources. I have seen that happen. At the same time we can review what is in the vet box in the trailer and barn.

During the winter is a good time for another project. There are many great places around Spokane to ride and camp. Now is a good time to get out the maps and calendars with your riding partners and make plans. If additional information is needed about a location it is a good time to talk to friends and land managers. When planning 2019 you should consider membership in the Ponderosa Chapter of Back Country Horsemen (BCH) and attending the Scavenger Hunt in Riverside State Park Saturday, September 28. The statewide rendezvous is in Ellensburg March 15-17. Back Country Horsemen is a place where all of these issues are discussed and we share experiences and knowledge. Contact us on Facebook at Ponderosa Chapter of Back Country Horsemen, or www.pbchw.com, or 509-4662225. We meet the first Tuesday of the month. Stay warm and be prepared for a great year of riding in 2019.
