Gallop Celebrates 30 Years!

his year marks the 30th anniversary of the Gallop Stallion Services Auction. Some of those history making, legendary stallions who have participated over the past thirty years, are on the front cover of this month’s Horse Previews Magazine. When you say ‘this offspring is by’… most likely Gallop had their sire, grand sire, or even great-grand sire in the lineup. Can you guess correctly the names of those stallions on the front cover? Some of them you won’t believe have participated! Many of the resulting Gallop foals have brought in six or more figures for the sellers. Just recently, Gallop was informed of a resulting offspring selling for $60,000. With thirty years under Gallop’s belt and over $1.5 million raised, the equine industry has proven that ‘the horse and child’ really do go together in a “fun-raising” event. Curious about whom some of those old timers or past participating stallions were? Here are just a few (which does not include current stallions): Major Bonanza, Obvious Conclusion, Triples Image, McLeo Bars, Scotch Bar Time, Smart Chic Olena, CD Olena, Barpassers Image, Mr Melody Jac, Reminic, Peppy Badger Chex, Lenas Wright On, Shine Like Hail, Metallic Cat, That Sly Cat, Great Red Pine, Lean With Me, Shine By The Bay, Smart Lil Highbrow, Artful Investment, Kids Classic Style, Approval, Playgirls

phony Gallop,” took on a new beneficiary, home, and title as “Wishing Star Gallop.” The ten events were reevaluated and it was decided to narrow it down to just one event, the Gallop Stallion Services Auction. The decision proved to be wise. For sixteen years, Gallop remained Gallop’s Stallion Preview in 1987 Wishing Star’s number one fundraising event, raising over $1,159,156! In 2000, Rhodes River Ranch joined the forces with compassion for children in need. They became Gallop’s Titled Sponsor. Located at the foothills of the Cascades, the ranch is just an hour and a half north of Seattle/Tacoma International Airport in beautiful Arlington, Washington. Rhodes River Ranch is dedicated to breeding, raising and training future world champion performance horses and to providing top quality services to their clients. Throughout the years, Rhodes River Ranch has compassionately supported Gallop’s mission. Not just as the Titled Sponsor, but additionally donating services to their GREAT stallions. They currently own NRHA Open Derby Gallop’s 10th Anniversary Co-Reserve Champion, congratulating Barb Turner in 1993 NRHA Shootout Reserve

Champion, NRHA Futurity Sire Award Winner, whom holds Lifetime Earnings over $212,148: Whizkey N Diamonds. Other such greats involved in the auction have been: Shine By The Bay, Hollywood Vintage, Shine Like Hail, Gallop Opening Ceremony in 1994 and Starlights Joy. Their skilled stallion management, superior mare care and expert foal handling are the trademarks of their ranch. They welcome visitors to tour their site and/or contact them for more information regarding any of their services, stallions, sales or just to visit. Gallop is forever indebted to Rhodes River Ranch. They are the heartbeat to the existence of the Gallop Stallion Services Auction. In 2005, the Gallop grew from a West Coast Event to an International Event. Gallop was one of the first in the equine industry to add live Internet bidding with successful bids being placed from around the world. With all of this excitement, don’t forget the primary mission. All net proceeds from the Gallop Stallion Services Auction go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane, enabling them to continue serving hundreds of families. Imagine if your child was sick. What would you do if you had to fly to a hospital in a different city far from your home? Would you know where to go? When you arrived at the hospital, where would you put your extra clothes? Where would you shower? Where would you wash your clothes? Who would you turn to for help? These and many other questions are all answered daily by the volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane. Families are provided temporary lodging, comfort and support while their children are accessing medical services. These basic needs are met while they help their children overcome their medical struggles. The House provides a consistent and caring helping hand, lessening the mental and financial strain on the families. It allows them to focus on the most important thing… supporting their children. At the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane, families have an opportunity to write their thoughts and inner feelings in their Journals. We would like to share this entry from the Journal. January 26, 2011 My daughter was born on January 14, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. After she was born, they told us that she was very sick and had a syndrome called ‘Heterodoxy.’ This is where everything inside of her was reversed. Her heart was in very bad shape and the doctors didn’t give us a lot of hope that she would live, but on the seventh day she was having her first open heart surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah. After that she had three more open-heart surgeries, two caths and two stomach surgeries. She is a miracle! I have lived in the hospital more than at home over the past two years. In two months, she is going to her final heart surgery, if all goes well. We pray to God everyday that she will live many years. I have been in three different Ronald McDonald Houses in three different states. I am so thankful for them! They truly give me a home away from home while dealing with my daughter’s illness. We thank you! God bless the house and all of the families with a special girl or boy. Remember, God has chosen us to be their parents and we are blessed every day that goes by. Veronica Unfortunately, stories like the one above are the reality of a multitude of families living at the Ronald McDonald House. Fortunately, people like you support the mission when participating in the Gallop Event! Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane is indebted to Gallop’s Sponsors, Donors, Committee Members and Stallion Owners for their support in both the RMHC mission and Gallop Auction. You can be a part of the RMHC family. You can make a direct impact on the life of a child today. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane looks forward to seeing you all at the Gallop Stallion Service Auction on Sunday, January 27, 12 noon for a “Fun-raising” event. For more information about Gallop or the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane, please contact Barbara Turner at 509-990-4167.

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM

The Heeler Mentality It all started when my wife asked, “What happened to your head?” “Where?” I asked, thinking I had scratched it in the mesquite or during the night while I was sleeping someone had tattooed “KICK ME” across my forehead. She reached up and touched me above the left ear. “Oh,” I said, “I had a little hair trim.” “Rollie got a little close, didn’t he?” “No, not really. I, uh, trimmed it myself,” I explained. “So, that explains the lock of black, tan and gray hair I found in the sink,” she said. “I thought it was off that deer you shot yesterday. Why didn’t you let me do it?” “I don’t know, I guess I was in a hurry.” “Pretty good reason,” she said, “Did you close your eyes while you were trimming your hair? Or did a sudden earth tremor rattle your clippers? Wait, you were working on your trick or treat mask of Frankenstein!”

“Yes,” I said defensively, “it was…it was just the heeler mentality.” That stopped her. The heeler mentality is a version of the cowboy mentality where instinct often overwhelms good judgment. It can be compared to the team roping “header” mentality. For instance; a header usually has his hair styled rather than cut; a heeler cuts his own hair and always needs a shave. A header drives a fairly new pickup and trailer with a coordinated paint job; the heeler is still buyin’ recaps and the paint job on his trailer matches the primer on his brother’s BBQ grill. A header usually has two horses, his favorite and one in training; the heeler has one horse, in training and for sale. The header has ulcers; the heeler has a hangover. I’m left-handed so I am condemned to roping the heels. I play the guitar right-handed because my dad made me. So now I can never play music as well as a natural right-hander plus I sign my name upside down because it’s the only way I can write it legibly. People see me signing my name and think it’s a parlor trick. “How long did it take you to learn that?” they ask. It’s like asking a one legged man how long it took him to learn to limp. I’m not doing it on purpose… it’s a handicap! Being left-handed in a right-handed world is like being a bolt with Machine Threads surrounded by nuts all drilled for Standard. A heeler sees nothing wrong with turning his socks inside out to keep them fresh, storing his dress shirt in his dop kit, and using Scotch tape instead of sewing a new one on when he loses a button off his cuff. It’s not a bad thing having the heeler mentality. Life is easier. You can drop your sandwich on the floor, then pick it up and eat it. What’s a few grains of sand? They think nothing of doing a rectal exam on a cow without a plastic sleeve, getting mud on their new boots, climbing on a bad horse out of obstinance, receiving a D in Algebra, or never balancing their check book. But, we can focus intensely on a project when we need to; like comin’ out of the heeler’s box concentrating on the throw, or makin’ a bank shot off the rail in a game of 8-Ball, or cutting off our nose to spite our face! So, giving myself a hair trim is not out of character. I can live with it, even though I look like the barber did it with an electric sander and a weed eater. It’ll grow out, just a little slower, that’s all. www.baxterblack.com

Ann Kirk Selecting a Trainer

T

he new year is here. There is snow on the ground and cold in the air so it’s hard to think about summer riding but the days will fly by and spring will arrive before you know it. So I want to share some tips for selecting a trainer or instructor to work with you and your horse when the time comes. Because there are no mandatory classes to take or licenses to earn, nearly anyone can put an ad in the paper, hang up a shingle and call themselves a horse trainer. With so much information available on video or TV, a person with a little knowledge and a lot of determination can come across as knowing more than they do. But learning some techniques and having the experience to apply them to each horse specifically are two different things. You may end up paying a chunk of money without getting the results you’re hoping for or your horse may end up worse than when you started. The stories are endless that I have heard to that effect.

Now, with that being said, I would rather send my horse to a trainer with good methods and little experience than to one who has been training for many years but uses techniques that are hard for me to follow or reinforce with my horse when I get it back. Many trainers are good at training the horse to their ability level but cannot break it down for the less experienced rider. Because they can ride the horse well, they are satisfied and expect that you should be able to do the same. You have already invested time and money into your horse. Before you invest more, you owe it to yourself to take the time to get the training you are expecting. This is a good time to start looking as you have a few months before the weather opens up for Spring. You don’t have to be in a hurry to make a decision. Let me give you a few tips to get you started so you can get the results you are looking for in this new year. The first thing you need to know is what you are looking for. Whether you have a horse that needs started under saddle or one with a particular problem, what you expect needs to be very clearly defined. Sit down and write out a detailed description of what the perfect horse looks like to you. The more specific you are, the easier it will be to know if the person you are evaluating can produce those qualities in your horse. Next, be clear about your goals with your horse. Whether you plan on showing, gaming or trail riding, your young horse will take to the discipline easier if it is given time to become

comfortable with just being ridden first. You may need to hire one trainer to get your horse solid in the basics and another that specializes in the discipline you acquired your horse to participate in. There are some trainers that are good at both. But there are others that start out focusing on the discipline while skipping the foundation needed for the horse to properly adjust. Then, when the horse rebels out of fear and uncertainty, he is blamed for being a tough horse and you are advised to get a different one. While this is sometimes necessary due to physical conformation or such, often it is from rushing or eliminating the processes necessary for the horse to learn. Another step is to decide how involved you want to be in your horse’s training. I have had owners who drop the horse off and only return when the horse is ready to go home. I have also had a few who are here almost every day. I find the second are far more successful with their horses. But know what you want or can do. Some trainers will not let you come watch for the first 2-4 weeks they have your horse so you’ll need to decide ahead of time; and lessons with your horse are always a good idea, so evaluate the trainer’s people skills and teaching abilities when deciding. Does he or she make you feel confident and able when you work with your horse? Or do you come away feeling like you should just bag the whole idea? Now for the cost. When you are asking about cost, you must take into consideration the amount of actual time your horse is being worked with. Some trainers sound like they are very reasonably priced but when you find out the amount of time they are actually working with your horse, the hourly

rate may be very high. On the same note, it also works the other way. A trainer that seems to be very expensive may be working more time per day and the hourly rate works out to be less than the first trainer. So know what amount of time you are paying for when you hire a trainer. When you find someone you are interested in, set up a time or a day to go watch him work. It is best to watch him work several different horses at different levels in their progress. Ask him questions if he will allow it when he does something that you do not understand. File the answers and ask yourself if it makes sense or if you want him treating your horse the same way. Go and watch him several times and get references. If you do not have much experience with horses, go watch several different trainers to get an idea of different training styles so you can make an informed decision. Bottom line, it is your choice and your responsibility to do the best you can for your horse by finding a good trainer. When you send him to a trainer, be sure you have done your homework so you can give him the best opportunity possible for becoming a faithful riding horse. The right trainer for you is out there so take the time to find him or her and enjoy the results in your well adjusted horse. Until next time… God Bless. Western Dressage, The Clothing Conondrum By Michelle K. Binder-Zolezzi, Relational Riding Academy Every day I head out to the barn to work. Like other trainers, I work outside in temperatures from 0 to 100 degrees 7 days a week, almost 365 days a year, from dawn till dark and sometimes longer. As a professional trainer and riding instructor I am called on to muck stalls, fix fence, buck hay, dump grain, rake footing, fill water buckets, sweep the aisle, clean tack, change bandages, medicate, lead beginners, longe riders, heft children into saddles… oh! And ride horses. My daily attire needs to be flexible and frequently involves layers upon layers of various types of fabrics depending on how deep the snow is in Spokane. The first layer, however, is always proper riding attire. Proper riding attire? For Western Dressage? So what does one wear for Western Dressage? Actually, there is both schooling attire and show attire. I really laughed at myself when I thought about the clothes I wear some days. I am likely to be found schooling in my helmet, a pair of Justin Ropers w/kilties, Ariat half chaps, leather full seat breeches, a custom stock seat equitation saddle and my white lined black Kieffer dressage bridle with a German hollow mouth snaffle. I cracked a joke last week in the Horse Radio Network interview I did about Western Dressage on the “Horses in the Morning Show” saying that I can’t wait for the new “boot cut

leather full seats!” Imagine my surprise last weekend when one of my dressage students showed up at a clinic wearing a pair of Kerrits boot cut breeches with a knee patch! The full seats are actually here…. Thank you Kerrits, you brought it! We Western Dressage riders were just waiting for these… It seems I am not the only one who can’t find clothes and tack that are perfectly suited for our riding style. I have discovered that many Western Dressage enthusiasts wear a blend of different items of apparel from both disciplines and furthermore, seem quite happy to use “whatever works!” Ariat and Kerrits products seemed to top the list for foot and legwear, with jeans and cowboy (girl?) boots running right up there. I don’t care much for the seams in jeans, but I have now gotten my husband to try “Western Dressage” because he can wear his Levi’s instead of those funny skin-tight pants! The best of both worlds indeed, my friend Phyllis wears breeches that look like jeans and I understand you can get them at St. Croix Saddlery, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I decided the best place to see what riders are wearing would be YouTube so I took an afternoon off in the name of research and explored the infinite number of video clips associated with the search words “Western Dressage.” OMGosh! I saw horses in every conceivable type of saddle, a typically western (read: ‘Appaloosa’) horse looking spectacular in a dressage saddle with a rider in a shadbelly and a very warmblood looking horse with a big rear in a western saddle whose rider was in western attire (remarkably both these were on the same channel). There was a guy in jeans and cowboy boots with a white shirt and tie under a dark dress coat jogging around with a helmet on. There were people looking like Pasadena Rose Parade entries, cowboys looking fresh (?) out of the cow pen, cowgirls with big hair riding big hair horses in big dresses and teens in shorts and flipflops bopping around a round pen on strung out star gazing horses (“You think I’m doing it right now Mom?”). No wonder people are asking “What is Western Dressage?”! While what we wear to school our horses is a matter of personal preference, show attire is bound to be determined by a governing body in the sport. So, North American Western Dressage has these offerings from the proposed 2012 Official Rulebook.

Dealing With a Hoof Abscess

VETERINARY KNOWLEDGE

AG ELESS

by Dr. Bob Peters, DVM McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital - Spokane, Washington

HORSEMANSHIP

“I need a veterinarian out here ASAP! I think my horse broke its leg. Yesterday he was fine but this morning his leg is swollen and he will barely touch his toe on the ground.” You would be amazed at how often this time of year we get a phone call that sounds something similar to this. It happens so often in fact that the office staff often refers to them as “another hoof abDr. Bob Peters, DVM scess call” when they tell one of the doctors to call the client back. It is not uncommon for us to look at a hoof abscess daily during this time of the year. In fact, I dealt with two just today. What Causes Hoof Abscesses? The wet, muddy environment of the Northwest is the number one culprit. It softens the hoof capsule making it much easier for bacteria to penetrate to the sensitive structures. Soil, in general, carries a very high bacterial load. The addition of fecal material in the horse paddock exponentially increases the bacteria level. As the ground becomes soft and muddy your horse is standing in a bacterial stew. Any penetration of the outer structures of the hoof allow a path for bacteria to gain access to the sensitive lamina. There are many ways to

cause a break in the outer protective layer of the hoof. It could be poor conformation, a broken hoof wall, white line disease, a past laminitic incident, a small stone, a horse shoe nail, pawing at the fence, bad luck or any other number of things. How Do We Prevent a Hoof Abscess? Head for Arizona for the winter... don't we all wish! It is easier said than done, but, minimizing as much as possible, the amount of exposure the hoof capsule gets to muck and mud will help. Obviously we can't stop the rain and snow; however, there are several things you can do to help. First, turnout on ground that is slightly sloped to allow for water to run off is better than flat ground. If that is not an option, providing a dry area is critical. Shavings suck an amazing amount of moisture out of the hoof. Stalling at night or at least providing a 3 sided run in shed with dry shavings will make a profound difference. If none of those suggestions are possible haul in a truck load or two of dirt to create a raised area that will stay drier than the rest of your “pond.” In my opinion, it is even more critical to keep your farrier coming all winter. Overgrown feet hold an amazing amount of mud and fecal matter. They also are at much higher risk of cracks or breaks developing in the wall. Obviously an overgrown foot is also an out of balance foot. An out of balance

foot creates stresses in the white line and or bruises that are gateways for bacteria to enter.

My Horse Has an Abscess Anyway, How Do I Treat It? If you are one of the unlucky ones who goes out to find your buddy with an abscess, the best thing to do is call your veterinarian; they will accurately diagnose the problem. Not all abscesses are equal—Some are Dr. Peters’ two year old colt trying to keep much more serihis feet dry ous than others. The most effective treatment is to open a tract to allow for drainage. This has a twofold effect. First of all, it relieves pressure inside the hoof capsule which provides pain relief. Second, it allows an escape route for the infection. Obviously, the horse needs to be current on tetanus shots. Bandaging and poulticing are done in most cases. Left untreated the infection could work its way to areas of the foot where it can be a much more serious problem. Many rupture out of the coronet. If this happens, the healing time is longer and there is a potential for a long term hoof wall defect. If it works its way into the coffin bone, coffin joint or tendons the effect

could be catastrophic. It is true that treated correctly, most hoof abscesses heal pretty quickly with no adverse long term effects. There are a few that are not that lucky— so don't treat the hoof abscess lightly. Pick the feet daily, give ‘em a place to dry out, keep your farrier in the loop. If things go south anyway give your vet a call. — Happy New Year, Dr Peters Jed McKinlay, DVM Bob Peters, DVM Misty Rhett, DVM s Email: Info@mpevh.com www.McKinlayPetersEquine.com
