AG ELESS HORSEMANSHIP

A

Preparing for Foaling Season by Dr. Misty Parker, DVM McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital - Spokane, Washington

fter a long winter, we welcome warmer weather, and with that, we welcome back another foaling season. It is just beginning, as we have had a few foals in the hospital in the last few weeks, but within a month we will be in full swing. It’s always exciting and uplifting to see a new baby frolicking in the pasture with its mother, and most of the time this is the case, but occasionally they need extra help. That’s when it becomes important to have a good relationship with a veterinarian. Dr. Misty Parker, DVM A mare’s normal gestation length is 320-365 days, with an average around 345 days. Signs of impending parturition include udder development about a month prior, vulvar laxity and pelvic ligament laxity a week prior and teat wax 24-48 hours prior. Please keep in mind that these time frames are flexible and maiden mares don’t always follow the rules. A foal born prior to 320 days is considered premature. Clinical signs that accompany prematurity can include low

birth weight, silky hair coat, domed forehead, droopy ears, generalized weakness, flexor tendon laxity, pulmonary insufficiency, poor muscle development, and/or collapsed tarsal or carpal bones. A foal that displays these clinical signs that is over 320 days gestation is commonly known as dysmature. Mares go through three stages of parturition. The first stage consists of uterine contractions and cervical dilation and lasts until the water breaks. It should range anywhere between 30 minutes to 4 hours. The second stage lasts about 20-40 minutes and is the actual delivery of the foal. Passing of the placenta completes the third stage and this can take 30 minutes to 3 hours. If the placenta has not passed in 3 hours it is considered an emergency. Never try to pull a placenta out, they are fragile and can tear easily. Even a small section of a placenta left inside the uterus of a mare can cause toxic metritis and potentially death. The first thing normally seen during delivery is the amnion, which is a gray translucent sac surrounding the foal. Next you should see one front foot, followed by the second front foot and then the foal’s nose. The amnion is typically torn by movement from the foal’s head and front feet. If the sac does not rupture then the foal is at risk of suffocation and manual tearing of the amnion should be done. If the first

thing you see is a bright red velvety bag, call your veteriarian immediately! This is called a “red bag and signifies premature placental separation. Foals in this situation are in danger of extreme oxygen deprivation and immediate delivery of the foal is imperative. A normal healthy foal should show signs of normal respiration within 1 minute after birth, be able to be up on their sternum within 5 minutes after birth, have a suckle reflex within 5 minutes, be attempting to stand within 30 minutes and be nursing from the udder within 1-3 hours. Nursing within the first 3-6 hours is extremely important because after 6 hours the ability of the foals’ stomach to absorb the mares’ colostrum is drastically impaired. Colostrum is the mares’ first milk and it is packed with immunoglobulins that are essential to build the foals’ immune system. Without it the foal is immunocompromised and unable to fight off disease. The immunoglobulins that the foal absorbs from the colostrum hit its peak levels in the blood stream within 18-24 hours. A simple blood test can be done at this point to confirm that the foal absorbed enough colostrum. If it has not, then we recommend giving intravenous plasma. Shortly after birth we recommend dipping the umbilical stump. We prefer using 0.5% Chlorhexidine (A.K. A. Nolvasan Solution). Dipping the stump 3-4 times a day for the first 2-3 days is typically adequate. An empty syringe case, shot glass or Dixie cup work well for this. While you are doing so, monitor the umbilicus closely for dribbling of urine, reddening, swelling and heat.

Most mares foal unassisted without any complications and have healthy babies, however – q If the foaling of your mare does not follow the normal sequence as listed above – call your veterinarian. q If the foal does not appear to be progressing within the normal time frame as listed above – call your veterinarian. q If your mare does not pass her placenta within 3 hours of foaling – call your veterinarian. q We also recommend calling your veterinarian to schedule a well-baby check within 24-36 hours after foaling. We wish everyone a wonderful Spring and the best of luck with those new foals! — Dr. Misty Parker

Horsemanship and the Art of Dress-age!

Krisean Performance Horses “Life With the Blue-Eyed Wonders by Jill Smith . 3HADY 3LOPE 2OAD 3POKANE 7! s s JILLSMITH EARTHLINK NET

The winter hair is starting to shed off the horses so spring must be right around the corner. I noticed that my sweater had gone from mohair to mor-hair thanks to my shedding white stallion, Commander! Speaking of Commander, I thought I better go see what he was up to as there was a whole lot of quiet coming from the stallion corrals. Usually on a nice spring day the stallions are starting to feel the urge of breeding season and there is stallion verbal commotion echoing through the ranch yard! Rounding the barn corner I stopped dead in my tracks. Now when you own a talking horse, like my perlino quarter horse stallion, Commander, you get use to expecting the unexpected! But I certainly did not expect to see Commander sporting a large, black top hat on his head and a jaunty white tie around his neck! Black ribbons adorned his tail and there was a smug looking white rat sitting on his back. “Sooooo, Commander, what’s up and, er, who’s your pal there? I could barely utter a word in my astonishment. “Sooooo yourself, miss smarty pants cowgirl, you haven’t heard that this is the dress-age?! Commander smugly replied. “Mares are looking for stallions that stay up with the times. No thanks to you, it was Timer here who clued me in on what well dressed stallions are currently wearing.

“Just what DID Timer tell you about well dressed stallions? I said as I glanced over at Timer in the next corral. Timer, my Arab stallion, all of a sudden needed to examine something up in the sky and wouldn’t even return my look. “Timer told me that this dress-age thing was all the rage. More and more people and horses are getting into it and I, for one, didn’t want to be left out! My blue-eyed wonder replied. “You have to have the right dress and really cool moves. The moving, of course, I already have down pat, but I certainly needed a more sophisticated outfit! Now I got it! He was referring to the horsemanship art of dressage! It really is becoming more and more popular as people who really enjoy riding are finding out how beneficial basic dressage training can be. Its purpose of developing a horse’s natural athletic ability and willingness to work creates a horse that is calm, supple and attentive to his rider. But how do you tell a well intended white stallion that he looks

ridiculous?! “Commander I think you mean dressage pronounced “dress-ahhzh” not dress-age. It’s about more than wearing a top hat, tie and tails and usually it’s the rider who wears those things. That doesn’t explain why you’re looking a little mousy”. That got me a glare from the indignant white rat on Commander’s back. Commander, not ever being one to let me take the upper hoof, indignantly replied with a glare in Timer’s direction, “Obviously you don’t know that rat catching is a big part of dress-age. So I’ve caught me the biggest rat around for just a little sharing of my grain.” Careful, careful, careful, don’t make him feel too stupid, I thought, but I can’t stand here much longer without bursting into the largest guffaws a cowgirl can have! “I think that Timer was referring to ratcatcher shirts. In dressage, the show shirt underneath the riding coat is called a “ratcatcher”. It’s a buttoned shirt with a stand-up mandarinstyle collar covered by a separate, matching choker or a stock tie, with the final look usually resembling that of a turtleneck. Would you like me to find you a turtle to join the rat?” OK so I just couldn’t contain myself. Let me tell you a little bit about dressage. Dressage, a French term, is commonly translated to mean “training”. The fundamental purpose of dressage training is to develop a horse’s natural athletic ability and willingness to perform so that it maximizes the horse’s ability as a riding animal. Standardized training methods are used that let a

horse progress from a novice to a fully adept performer. At the top of the dressage training peak the horse can smoothly respond to a skilled riders’ minimal hand and body requests by performing the requested movement while remaining relaxed and effortless. Dressage has become a favorite competitive horse sport with competitions ranging from amateur beginning levels all the way up to the Olympics. Often referred to as horse ballet, it is a formalized sport with distinct dress codes of top hat or velvet helmet, formal riding coat, ratcatcher shirt, white tie, gloves, light colored breeches and high black boots. All riding horses can benefit from dressage training but the higher competitive levels are usually dominated by the warmblood horse breeds. Beginning levels start with a disciplined walk and trot and advance up to increasingly difficult maneuvers required of the horse and rider. Dressage follows classical principles which have been developed over hundreds of years. Currently, competitive dressage involves nine progressive levels incorporating multiple tests within each level. Special tests are also written for musical freestyle, sport horse breeding and performances incorporating multiple horses and riders. According to internationally known trainer, Karl Mikolka, “Dressage is the gradual development of the physical as well as mental abilities of every horse regardless of breed and bloodlines. It’s a method of training that makes each horse not just the perfectly built - into the best it can be by enhancing gaits and optimizing natural conformation. Dressage is

good basic horsemanship.” More information can be found at the Inland Northwest Dressage Association at www.spokanedressage.org/ I looked back at my poor humbled white stallion who had removed his hat and tie and stripped the ribbons from his tail. With revenge in his blue eyes, he was preparing to become a snorting, world class, dressage jumper as he aimed at Timer’s corral. “Commander, I wouldn’t expend too much energy as we have mares to breed and you’ll need all your superior strength and natural studly good looks.” I calmly mentioned, knowing full well what was always at the top of his performance list. “You might reconsider the passenger on your back though; he doesn’t look much like a dressage rider.” With his temperament returning to its usual calm level he looked around at his back and simply said,”Go rat on somebody else!” Jill Smith is a Spokane, WA entrepreneur, international business owner, artist/potter and cowgirl at heart. Western Dressage News By Michelle K. Binder-Zolezzi, Relational Riding Academy

W

e s t e r n Dressage is rolling here in Washington State. Year end awards at the state level will be awarded for NAWD Level 1 Foundation, Level 2 Partnership, Level 3 Communication, Level 4 Influence, Level 5 Finesse and Level 6 Harmony. Western Dressage classes using North American Western Dressage tests are being offered in Northeast Zone at Post Falls Equestrian Center May 10-12, and September 1315. Wenatchee has Western Dressage classes for Zone and State points June 1-2 as well. If your barn schooling show has added Western Dressage classes, please let everyone know so we know where to go to show! Thanks to open minded forward thinking members in the Northeast Zone, this zone has offered Zone awards for Levels 1 through 4. To qualify for awards at State and Zone, follow all rules regarding membership, sign-up, and recording. Riders will send copies of the front of 3 score sheets from minimum of 2 judges to Western Dressage Chair Michelle Binder-Zolezzi before October 1, 2013. No self-reporting, no awards so stay

on top of your game! Send score sheets to Michelle at 1713 E. Providence Ave., Spokane WA 99207. Tests are available at www.northamericanwesterndressage.com INDA has also added NAWD Western Dressage classes to their class lists June 29 at Prairie Sky and possibly the September 29 show at Spokane Sport Horse Farm. Wildwind Farm has them running at their schooling show in Republic June 22. That makes at least six shows where Western Dressage classes can be ridden. Riding tests at all these shows counts toward year end awards through NAWD via “NAWD Trax the only national Western Dressage award system. Plans for an all-Western Dressage show in the fall are being discussed and there is talk of offering tests from the three top organizations NAWD, WDAA and Cowboy Dressage there. Stay posted about what is happening by picking up the Exchange and Horse Previews magazines as well as “The Canter, WSH’s quarterly publication, or by hitting “LIKE at Relational Riding Academy on Facebook.

Ann Kirk Horses and Obstacles

O

ur snow is nearly gone and I am back in the saddle, working horses several hours per day. As the trails open up and the warmer weather arrives, I will begin riding my training loops with mini saw in hand to remove any 'obstacles' that have encroached during the winter. My horses have encountered water, dead-fall, mud and brush so often that I hardly even think about them refusing to let me guide them safely through whatever we come across on the trail. But it is not so with many horses that arrive at my ranch for training or tune-ups. Trail riding and obstacles go hand-in-hand. Crossing water or bridges or negotiating a scattering of dead-fall are often an expected part of every ride. Less thought of obstacles might be pushing through thick brush, going up or down very steep terrain, dealing with muddy ground or having to jump a log that is too high to step over and too low to go under. Therefore, teaching your horse what to expect when you encounter obstacles is an important part of having a safer horse to ride.

Have you ever wondered why your horse reacts so strongly to things that seem to be so minor? When we riders approach an obstacle, we analyze it, determine its purpose and usually judge its safety fairly quickly. Things such as a puddle on the road or a boggy spot in the field don't raise red flags to us. But a horse does not reason like we do. They do not think in terms of how badly they might get hurt when encountering an obstacle. With a prey animal, it is life and death. They are always thinking of living and not dying. So, when we come upon something they are afraid of and we pressure them to just do it, we can do some serious damage to their trust and it makes them very anxious about obstacles in general. They may resort to extreme behaviors to avoid being forced over something they perceive as being deadly. Some people think that if they force the horse through once, then the horse will be okay with it the next time. But, adding fear to an already uncertain horse will only make them worse the next time. Soon, you will have to know your trails and avoid any rides that might have obstacles your horse won't deal with. But it doesn't have to be that way. Teaching your horse to calmly negotiate obstacles is a great lesson for any horse, not just the ones that are going to be shown in trail classes or going to compete in trail challenges. When done right, your horse will approach new things with an understanding of what you are going to ask him to do.

Teaching the Art of Reading the Heart - Sensible Horsemanship APRIL 2013 • HORSE PREVIEWS • PAGE 20

APRIL 2013 • HORSE PREVIEWS • PAGE 21

He will trust that he will be guided, not pressured, through the correct steps. The horse learns to trust your request to approach new things. He gets this respect and trust from having been taught in a safe situation to go over things he is not familiar with and by learning that he did not get hurt while doing so. The lessons are for the rider as much or more than the horse. The rider learns how to approach an unfamiliar setting in a manner that allows the horse time to negotiate it calmly and safely. The horse, in turn learns to approach the next object in a calmer, more confident manner. It will soon become apparent that it is really not about the particular obstacle you are working with but about teaching your horse a pattern for dealing with whatever obstacle or environmental setting you might come in contact with in your daily travels. Building trust is priceless and develops confidence for the future. There are 2 types of obstacle work I like to do with all my horses. The first is working from the ground with the bridle. Teaching my horse to respond correctly to the bit letting me guide it over, under and through obstacles gives me a much closer connection and a better trained horse. I sometimes use a small board or soft flexible rubber tub and teach my horse to place its foot right on the board or into the tub. I especially like introducing water from the ground first as it reduces the trauma for the horse, is much easier on my body and I can be very specific about teaching the horse to step into the water and not jump over it. Then I will work the obstacles from the saddle. By starting with simple things and working up to the scarier objects, I

can build the correct response every time. Then, no matter what I might come across on my ride, I will know that I can trust my horse to deal with it confidently and safely. Also, it is a great way to get your horse softer and more supple as you use improved body control with the bridle to keep him going where you want him to go. Next article, we will work on teaching obstacles from the ground. So gather some objects, set them up in a safe working environment and get ready to improve your riding times. Use your imagination as to what you will use. Poles, large rubber mats or thick sheets of plywood, trail class bridge, logs of different lengths and sizes and a large tarp. Also, gather some cardboard boxes and make a maze, make a pile of empty milk jugs or get an old mattress without springs. The options are endless. I will be teaching obstacle lessons at my Sensible Horsemanship Spring Tune-up Clinic, April 19-21. You can register on my website and come join the fun. Until next time, God Bless and be safe.... Ann Kirk is available for Sensible Horsemanship Clinics or Workshops in your area. ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM

Halter Safety I can always count on my friends to add a new page to my scrapbook entitled “How to Mess up a Simple Calving.” This chapter would be entitled “Halter Safety.” Rob was deep into calving his heifers. His calving lot was football field size including a small shed and a couple jugs. It was decorated with swells and depressions common to the Coulee ranchland in eastern Washington. For his regular heifer checks he used a typical “rancher’s” 4-wheeler that he’d bought from an orchard man who had traded up in a good year. Ron paid him $50 plus two grandstand tickets to the Mariner/Cleveland Indians baseball game. It was dipping into twilight when Rob made his “just before supper” heifer check. He was looking for #112, a brocklefaced heifer that he’d noticed going into labor earlier. He found her in a large depression on her back and gasping! Grabbing a halter from his calving box he put it over her head and gave it a manly pull…no luck. Thinking quickly, in

his first responder mode, he pulled the 4-wheeler in front of the upside down heifer and tied the halter shank to the back of his machine. So far, so good. The rope came tight, but the 4-wheeler, which weighed at least 600 lbs less than the heifer, lifted off its front wheels and came dangerously close to tipping over backwards. Next try, he locked his legs around the handlebars, leaned out over them like a figurehead on a schooner to distribute the load, and gave it the gas! He felt all four wheels grab and the cow move just before the rope broke! Rob fell forward, head first as the spinning machine climbed over him, rolled him up and laid him out flat on his back! Third time is the charm. Rob found a heavier piece of rope, re-hitched and…voila! He drug the heifer to flatter ground. He dismounted to untie the slipknot from the machine, unfortunately not noticing that the brockle-faced heifer had regained her feet and was coming his way. She hit him from behind, bounced him off the 4-wheeler and walked him like a foot-log! Then she turned to escape the scene of the crime and pulled the machine over on top of our hapless hero, eventually dragging the whole wreck to a stop. In retrospect, Rob said she turned out to be a pretty good mother but he was never able to drive his 4-wheeler into any pasture she inhabited without being attacked. EPILOGUE: The heifer outlived the machine. www.baxterblack.com

Sound Horses Win!

The Only Joint Formula Clinically Proven

T

he ONLY Joint Formula Clinically Proven To Reduce Lameness Scores, Reduce the Need for Injections, Increase Hyaluronic Acid Production Naturally, Increase Flexibility and Range of Motion and Increase Bioavailability! Feb. 28, 2013 – Indianapolis, IN - Whether it’s on the race track or in the arena, one of the most important and beneficial things you can do for your horse is offer the best in joint care and support. Just like any athlete, performance horses can have undue stress from repetitive workouts and competitions. If you’ve tried any of the hundreds of oral joint supplements on the market, and you’ve had little to no results, you’re not alone. Many horse owners have become soured using oral joint supplements, and the argument has always been the ‘lack of absorption.’ It’s true that the vast majority of oral joint supplements have a very low absorption rate. One Bottle Lasts 3 Months!

That is also why many recommend an initial loading dose. Stomach acids and enzymes end up destroying much of the beneficial ingredients. Exciting News! There is now a superior joint formula that truly is in a class by itself. In fact, third party independent reviews have stated it is likely the most powerful equine joint supplement on the market. It’s a product that is really making a difference and has many performance horse owners and trainers excited. ULTIMATE ABSORPTION IS THE KEY! GLC 5500RX combines the patented GLC formula with Actistatin to provide your horse with the absolute best in joint care. The patented GLC formula provides all four glucosamines plus chondroitin, ascorbate, and manganese. Actistatin is an all-natural combination of ingredients that has been clinically proven to increase the absorption of glucosamine and chondroitin. In order for GLC 5500RX to be beneficial to cartilage, it must survive the digestive system, go into the blood stream and then into the synovium. GLC 5500RX is formulated to work with your horse’s natural digestive processes to vastly improve the absorption rate to the blood serum. GLC 5500RX delivery of glucosamine and chondroitin to the blood stream is clinically proven to be at a 63% absorption rate to the blood serum. All other joint supplements are measured at a 6-9% absorption rate. GLC 5500RX specifically targets the rebuilding process for joint, bone, and soft tissues while helping fight free radicals and inflammation. When taken as directed, GLC 5500RX helps maintain the health and resiliency of all joints and connective tissues. GLC 5500RX has no loading dose. GLC 5500RX has been shown to increase the natural production of hyaluronic acid (HA) to help lubricate and nourish cartilage tissue, and has been shown to increase HA volume and viscosity. It has been shown to reduce the overall pain index in equine lameness as measured by reductions in AAEP lameness scores and improvement in both ROM and flexion scores. For more information, special pricing and personal attention, call Anne Marie Perry at Cutting Edge Performance (317) 750-5862 or email cuttingedgeperformance@gmail.com Anne Marie Perry is the owner of Cutting Edge Performance, a distributor for quality equine, canine and human joint supplements as well as a brand-new-to-the-market probiotic that contains the world’s best probiotic strain for livestock and is said to be 10 times more effective than those currently on the market. Think Outside The Box. Put A Gentle, friendly Gypsy Vanner foal in your barn next year for a $500 breeding fee. 509/9918107

Buying Horses, Gentle Riding Horses, will your horses be killed for human or dog food? No absolutely not, we do not kill horses for profit. Well trained horses with good manners always have a good home. If they do not, seems like they end up at a horse sale, & sometimes in the slaughter pen. If Gene Rucker buys your horses, they will be assigned to a trainer, then go through Gene Rucker’s Safety & Gentle Family Horse Training program, then shown by appointment & matched to the proper rider, then placed with new family to love & ride them. That makes a happy horse & rider. Don’t let selling your horse become a nightmare. I have families waiting for the right horses. Call today, we can only buy a few to put through our program.
