pring is in the air. As cliché as the saying goes, everyone’s spirits seem to lift once the snow starts to disappear from the Inland Northwest. The sun comes out, the rain has meaning, and we begin planning on bringing all new forms of life onto the landscape. From bouncing little lambs, to steadfast saplings, to precious perfumed blooms, there’s something to be joyful about every day in the springtime. We’ve decided to bring you all things spring in our April/ May issue of Bountiful Life: Country Living in the Inland Northwest. This month features new information on backyard gardening and livestock, sustainable living tips and xeriscaping benefits. Tim Kohlhauff joins us with his valuable guide to choosing the right tree for your yard and Jim Armstrong updates us on the status of his lambing season. Clare Gaffney-Brown brings us rich information on vermicomposting in your

Caring For Your Community Through Sustainable Living By Ashley Lewan

W

e have plenty of rural communities here in the Inland Northwest with room for full farms and ranches, but urban farming has taken great strides in the last few years. More and more people are realizing the benefits of raising their own food and many are even coming together as communities in order to create shared gardening space for an entire neighborhood. Until recently, citizens of the City of Spokane could keep Citizens can now keep small a number of chickens on their livestock and run their own property, leading produce stands in to an influx of residential neighborhoods fresh poultry and eggs. This has also helped city dwellers learn the responsibility of caring for an animal beyond domestic companionship. It has also seemed to only whet the appetites of city slickers, and as of late March, citizens can now keep small livestock and run their own unlicensed

produce stands in residential neighborhoods! This zoning restriction was lifted in hopes of helping encourage a more sustainable way of living. Amateur gardeners will be able to sell on site, what they grow on site. Although barely clearing the vote, citizens will be able to raise goats, sheep and pigs in residential neighborhoods. Those wanting to raise these animals will be required to earn an animal-keeping certification through Washington State University’s extension program. Before you turn your backyard into a zoo, there will be restrictions on the number of animals allowed based on square footage. The rules will allow one chicken or other fowl for every 1000 sq.ft. of property or one small livestock for every 2500 sq.ft. of property. Why would you want a goat on your property, you may ask? Well, besides the obvious benefits of goat milk and cheese, goats will do a wonder for your landscaping and lawn. Natural weed eaters, the digestive system of a goat sterilizes the weed seeds so when they exit the goat (no need to go

Along with xeriscaping, there are many ways to conserve water use. You can even create a rainwater harvesting system at home. lected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items. Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected. Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris. Adopting a sustainable lawn and garden will change the way you look and plan out your plant maintenance. Regarding your lawn and garden, get a soil test before you add fertilizer or lime and follow the recommendation.

as Red Wigglers/ Earthworms and European or African Nightcrawlers. These are not the average worms from your backyard, but are not as difficult to find as you might think. Most of them can be found online, from nursery suppliers or from fishing shops where they’re sold as bait. Vermicompost produces a nutrient rich matter that is excellent fertilizer and slows the release of nutrients that often wash away with the first watering. On a smaller scale, it’s useful as a top dressing and as an addition to potting mixes. Vermicompost can also be used on a large scale for farming, landscaping or making compost tea.

Modern composting can take on a multi-step process such as vermicomposting, or composting with worms

Once your bin is put together, get ready for some potent fertilizer

Although vermicomposting takes a bit more effort than traditional composting, it isn’t difficult to do in bins at home. Bins can be made out of pretty much anything, but containers made of plastic or wood are ideal. The bins do need to have holes or mesh for aeration, but holes can easily be added to the bottom where liquid can collect in a tray. There are benefits and drawbacks to both materials. Plastic lasts longer

but needs more attention when it comes to drainage. Wood absorbs some of the moisture, so will therefore need to be replaced more often due to rot. The design of the bin is usually most dependent on where it will be stored, either in the kitchen, basement or backyard. There are three types of bins once the material has been decided. The first is a non-continuous bin that starts with a layer of shredded paper or leaves to line the bottom, then a layer of worms, and finished off with a layer of compostable

material. This is the most popular type of bin since it’s small and easy to put together. Keep in mind that when you’re ready to harvest the casting fertilizer, you do have to dump out the entire contents of the bin, worms and all. The second type is a continuous vertical flow bin, which is made of a series of trays stacked upon one another. The bottom tray consists of a layer of chicken wire or mesh material and then the three layers listed above (bedding, worms, organic matter) but with another layer of bedding on top. The tray above holds only compostable materials, so when the worms are finished composting the bottom tray, they migrate up for more food. When the majority of the worms have moved up, the bottom tray can be taken out and the castings can be harvested more easily. The final type is a continuous horizontal flow bin which is very similar to the vertical bin. The horizontal bin is usually divided in half by a layer of

chicken wire, with one half being used until it is full and then the unused half being filled with bedding and organic matter. The worms start to migrate naturally from the first half once they have processed all of the food and the castings can be collected after. These bins are usually larger but still can be used indoors and are also easier to harvest. Make sure your bin isn’t in direct mid-day sunlight and don’t pack the ingredients in too tightly, your worms need room to wiggle around. Keep the compost moist and remember that after a while, worms can eat their weight in material. Start with about a half a pound of organic matter to one pound of worms. Use a balance of green and brown material, to keep the balance of nitrogen and carbon; too much green can start to smell. Keep the top of your bin sealed to ward off pests. Once your bin is put together, get ready for some potent fertilizer! 

Baa Baa Black Sheep By Jim Armstrong

O

n February 28th, we had a weather forecast that no one who has livestock likes to see: temperatures into single digits with sustained winds at 25mph and gusts to 45mph. With wind chill values well below zero, any lambs born out in the open would likely not survive. We were very concerned. We had one ewe that for a couple of days, exhibited all the signs of imminent delivery of her lambs. She was huge and we anticipated the possibility of her having triplets. As strange as that may sound, it isn’t all that uncommon in sheep and twins are actually the norm.

Granddaughters, Mila & Hailey, bottle feeding the smallest of 3 lambs

It was around 20 degrees and the wind was gusting over 30mph when she went into labor about noon. We quickly ushered her into one of the lamb jugs that provided some shelter from the cold wind and since we didn’t have any sheds big enough for all of them, I started building a temporary shelter for her and the lambs in the garage.Tying together 4 of the 16’ cattle panels we use for fencing, I put down rubber matting as flooring and covered it with straw. My wife sat out in the jug with the ewe, quickly drying off lambs as they were born. And yes, there were three! Once they were born, we led the ewe with us carrying her lambs in front of her, into the garage and makeshift pen. I quickly went back outside to complete the windbreaks for the other sheep to huddle behind during the night. The wind was out of the Northeast so securing tarps and sheets of plywood against the north fence of the paddock effectively blocked the wind and provided adequate shelter for the other lambs, now just

2 and 3 weeks old. It got very cold that night but they were dry and out of the wind. When I checked on them later that evening, it was great to see all of the lambs in the center of the flock, snuggled deep into the fresh straw, surrounded by the rams and ewes. Even hair sheep like our Katahdins, have such thick, well insulating coats that the snow just piles up on them, not melting off. Meanwhile in the garage, my wife was using a hairdryer on the lambs, making sure they were completely dry. The ewe was happily munching away on some beautiful, bright green grass hay with a few handfuls of grain mixed in. The lambs were taking turns nursing on her but the smallest of the three seemed to have some difficulty. We mixed up some goat milk and colostrum and fed her that evening and a couple of times the next day. That job went to our granddaughters who were staying for the weekend to give us a hand. The scene was priceless! Terminally cute was one description I heard from a colleague who saw the photos! Three days later, as I am writing this, the weather has improved considerably. While we did get about 8 inches of snow yesterday, today it is above freezing and raining a bit. It is going to be very wet and sloppy for the next week or so, but the remaining 3 ewes and their yet to be born lambs should be okay, even if they come in the middle of the night. They seem to know enough to get in out of the rain and into the jugs so I am not nearly as worried about their survival. I am going to keep the pen up in the garage for a few days yet, just in case we need it but I am hoping we don’t. This year has been an experience, one I hope we don’t have the occasion to re-live any time soon. But as owners of livestock, it comes with the territory. A couple more valuable lessons learned and some successful outcomes. It just doesn’t get any better... 

Put Down Roots with the Right Tree By Tim Kohlhauff

A

nother garden season is beginning, and with it comes the desire to get out and plant. Lucky for us, nurseries are bringing in truckloads of plants begging to come home with us, and with Arbor Day falling in late April, why not add a beautiful new tree to the landscape? Sadly, more than a few trees planted this spring won’t make it through their first year. This isn’t because people are bad gardeners, or because it was poor stock from the nursery, although occasionally both are true. The most common reason trees fail to establish is that they are the wrong species for the planting site. With a little research before heading to the nursery, you can choose the right tree for your landscape, and enjoy it for years to come. The first step is to survey the area, and write down as much information as you can. Start by checking the soil. Can you dig a hole deep enough for planting, or do you hit solid rock six inches down? Is this a dry area and if so will you be able

to irrigate? Maybe it’s a spot that actually stays wet most of the time; is it too wet for most trees? How much growing room will the tree have? Think about the mature size of the tree, not the size at the nursery. Are there power lines overhead? How about utilities below ground? Are there structures like a house or road nearby? These are all permanent fixtures, so don’t plant a tree that has to fight for space; the tree will always lose. Are there already other plants nearby? If they are too close to where you want to plant, your new tree may struggle to find enough room to grow. Remember that tree roots extend beyond leaf canopy of the tree. In a competition, the plants that are already there have the edge over the newcomer. Now that you’ve described the conditions, start thinking about what you want the tree to do. Knowing why you are planting will help you choose which type. Planting a large tree upwind of your home will reduce heat loss in the winter and save money on heating. Large deciduous trees planted on the south side of a home will shade it in the summer, but allow some sun through in the winter. Trees can be an investment that pays you back in energy savings. There are dozens more reasons to add a tree to your landscape. Are you looking for a visual screen to block a road or create a sense of privacy from a neighbor? Maybe you want a tree that produces fruit or seeds to feed the wildlife in your area? Who doesn’t love the brilliant colors of autumn leaves, are you looking for fall color? Maybe you prefer a tree that blooms in the spring, or has unusual bark for the long winter. Add these to your planting site description, and now you can start narrowing your choices. No matter what kind of tree you choose, keep in mind that even drought tolerant trees will need water during the first 3-4 years after planting, and any tree will grow better if they have regular irrigation. Unlike lawn, trees prefer deeper, less frequent watering that really saturates the root zone.

Serviceberry in bloom “Forest Prinz” 18 • April/ May 2014

If you are looking for a large tree, you have a number of options, so always start by looking at trees that will thrive in your landscape. What kinds of trees are growing wild in your area? If you have limited water for irrigation, consider some of our native trees, like Ponderosa pine, or Douglas fir. There are some deciduous trees that are drought tolerant too, although they aren’t native. Investigate Manchurian ash, and Western hackberry as options; these are larger trees adaptable to a variety of conditions. Bountiful Life

Don’t have space for a tall tree? There are some medium sized ones in the 3050 feet tall range, which tolerate some drought and are cold hardy. The bark on Scots pine has a rusty orange color that really looks great in the winter landscape. By contrast, the bark of Austrian pines is barely visible through the denser canopy that provides an excellent privacy screen and windbreak. The Goldenrain tree (Koelreuteria) is deciduous, drought tolerant, and grows bright yellow flowers in the summer. In the fall, they develop interesting seed pods that look like small paper lanterns. Just don’t get this plant confused with the borderline hardy Golden chain tree (Laburnum) which is definitely not drought tolerant. The benefit of smaller trees is that they look beautiful, and can give you many of the benefits of larger trees, without requiring as much space or maintenance. Some of these species are understory trees in their native environment, meaning they can tolerate partial shade. That doesn’t mean all small trees like shade, so check with your local nursery or go online before making any purchases. Our native serviceberry shrub prefers full sun, but also grows in some shade.

SPRING PROJECTS MADE EASY PAPÉ MACHINERY IS READY TO WORK

Scots Pine If you prefer a tree form to a shrub, look for the Apple serviceberry. This plant takes sun to partial sun and tolerates some drought. It has the same beautiful white flowers and dark edible berries as the shrub form, with brilliant fall color as well.

$1,499 plus complimentary first annual oil change

Some conifers are shade tolerant, and may be a good fit for your landscape. Korean pine is slow growing and shade tolerant but also extremely cold hardy. The cultivars ‚ÄòGlauca’ and ‚ÄòSilveray’ have bluish needles for strong winter interest. There are many dwarf forms of Canadian hemlock that also do well in the shade, but all require regular irrigation to thrive. Hemlock cultivar ‚ÄòSummer Snow’ has white needles at the tips, to brighten the shade garden, while ‚ÄòForest Fountain’ is all green, but has strong shape you can use as a focal point. These are just a very few of the trees you might consider adding to your yard this season. If you would like more ideas about the best ones for your area, consult your county extension office for recommendations. If you take a little time to research before deciding on a tree to buy, you and your landscape will be much more satisfied for years to come. 

A Weatherman You Can Trust By Jim Armstrong

A

ll of us at one time or another have had less than complementary thoughts about the weatherman. A vacation spoiled by cold temperatures, a promised snowfall on our favorite ski hill never materializes or the 4th of July festivities rained out when sunshine was the only thing in the forecast. There is one weatherman however, that I met in 1987 that has the ability to provide amazingly accurate worldwide forecasts for an entire year. Dr. Art Douglas, Professor Emeritus from the Atmospheric Sciences Department at Creighton University was among the pioneers of computer modeling of longterm weather forecasting. While we often criticize the accuracy of the forecast for tomorrow, the advent of computer modeling has revolutionized very long term forecasting; not two weeks or months out, but accurate forecasts for an entire year. Dr. Douglas came to Spokane for the first time during the 1987 Ag Expo/ Farm Forum. As the keynote speaker

in the opening session of Farm Forum, Douglas presented a long range forecast for the entire world that happened to be pretty much right on. This type of forecasting isn’t quite what we are used to with predictions of temperatures and precipitation for the week. On that score, he would probably be on a par with our local meteorologists. Long term forecasting tends to be more general in nature with temperature and precipitation ranges in terms of above or below historic norms. One might think that farmers and agri-business professionals would be more concerned with what will be happening next week in their own little corner of the world but that would be very shortsighted of them. Dr. Douglas talks about sunspot and solar flare activity coupled with ocean temperatures and currents and how they will affect weather trends around the globe. Being able to accurately predict a drought and reduced crop yields in Russia and Egypt would be valuable to farmers in

Choose from hundreds of fully vaccinated white leghornS and red SexlinkS. Both breeds are regarded as the best layer of white or brown eggs. Don’t make the mistake of buying chicks in the Spring. By the time they are mature enough to lay, the weather is changing and daylight decreasing. This means winter claims the most productive part of a hen’s laying life. Also, why waste the time, effort & expense of raising misidentified young roosters! Our small poultry farm located 30 minutes south of Spokane also offers WSDA certified organic poultry processing. other countries holding several million bushels of wheat. Knowing that reduced yields will mean increased demand and prices in 2 months would make it worthwhile to wait a few weeks before contracting their crop. Knowing that well above normal precipitation and lingering cold in Kansas and Iowa could mean that the farmers would be planting later in the spring and have reduced yields or even crop failures. Farmers in the Northwest would be able to make appropriate adjustments in the amount of acres they plant and even what crop they plant and have a competitive financial edge, knowing what will likely happen in other parts of the country.

Continued From Page 21 typically warm and dry summer. That would indicate above average crop yields for this region. He also predicted that our fall rains may be a bit later this year, very gradually increasing in late October, well after harvest. I always get a copy of his presentations to refer back to during the year. I am truly amazed at how accurate he is in forecasting not only this region’s weather, but global weather as well. To my knowledge, he has never “blown” a forecast. The knowledge he shares with our farmers during Ag Expo/Farm Forum every year is worth a great deal to our local economy with agriculture contributing nearly $9 billion statewide annually. He will be presenting Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the opening session of Farm Forum. Watch for more information on his and other Farm Forum presentations starting in November of this year. Carrot Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting E

aster is just around the corner and that means decorated eggs, family dinners and baskets of goodies. Why not add carrot cake to the mix? Sometimes carrot cake gets a bad rap, but even picky eaters will love this recipe for carrot cupcakes. They’re so easy to make that even the little ones can join in on the fun!

Ingredients • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups white sugar • 2 tsp baking soda • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground ginger • 2 Tbsp canola oil

• 4 large eggs • 4 large carrots, grated • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract • 2 cups powdered sugar

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Grease 12 muffin cups with butter or line with paper liners. 3. Sift flour, white sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and ginger together in a large bowl. 4. Beat canola oil and eggs into flour mixture with an electric mixer, beating each egg thoroughly before adding the next one. 5. Stir carrots into mixture until well combined. 6. Fill the prepared muffin cups about 2/3 full with carrot mixture. 7. Bake in the preheated oven until cupcakes are lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the middle of a cupcake comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Let cupcakes cool completely. 8. Beat unsalted butter and cream cheese together with an electric mixer on high speed in a bowl until fluffy. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in vanilla extract and confectioners’ sugar until combined. Increase speed to high, and beat until the frosting is fluffy, about 3 more minutes. 9. Fill a pastry bag with the cream cheese frosting and pipe onto the cupcakes. 24 • April/ May 2014

Inland Northwest Conservation Resource Guide

T

he Spokane Conservation District has compiled a list of agencies and organizations in the region that can provide information and technical assistance on a wide variety of environmental and natural resource issues, especially as they relate to living in the country. This directory is just a partial list of resources that could be available to you. There are virtually unlimited information resources that can be found on websites around the world. The ones listed here however, are local governmental entities that can provide not only information on

natural resource and environmental issues, but some can also provide on-site technical assistance. From production agriculture to nuisance wildlife and everything in between, this resource guide will help you find the information or assistance you need. There will be multiple listings for a particular issue and probably multiple issues addressed by several entities. Most of the listed agencies are sources of information and are in some way regulatory. All conservation districts are non-regulatory and provide on-site technical assistance as well as information. othing marks the beginning of good weather like firing up the barbecue. And nothing says spring more than delicious lamb with a side of good company. Cooking rack of lamb can be intimidating for many people, but this recipe is so easy to prepare that it will soon become a staple in your entertaining repertoire. Directions 1. Stir ketchup with Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, garlic, parsley, oregano, lemon zest, pepper and salt. Divide mixture in half. 2. Thread onion slices onto skewers so that they resemble lollipops. Brush half the marinade over lamb and onions. Marinate for 15 minutes. Preheat grill to medium. Set onions and lamb on grill, meaty side down. 3. Grill, turning and basting often, for 25 minutes or until medium-rare. Grill onions for the same time, turning as needed. Rest meat for 10 minutes. Cut into 2 rib portions. Serve with onion rings.

Ingredients • 1 cup tomato ketchup • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley

• 1 Tbsp chopped fresh oregano • 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest • 1 tsp pepper • 1/2 tsp salt • 2 large red onions, sliced thickly • 2 racks of lamb
