Ann Kirk Replacement Concept ~ Part One Summer is here and that means trail riding! If you are like me, I love to get out on the trails and see all the new Spring growth, the running streams and the active wildlife. Though arena work is important, my focus is to develop a solid foundation so that I can get out on the trails for those long rides that restore me. God's creation is best seen from horseback. But my horse doesn't always see these rides the same way I do. She is not happy about being separated from her buddies, which causes her to drag her feet on the way out, trying to take every little path she thinks will lead home. Then, as soon as she crosses the half-way point and is headed back, she gets in such a hurry, I wonder who switched horses with me; and I don't have to tell you about just trying to stand still on the trail and enjoying the view. Does any of this sound familiar? This month, I want to talk to you about the Replacement Concept. Basically, it is focusing on what you do want your horse to do, instead of what you don't. It is attaching a particular exercise and response to a negative behavior so as

to keep a positive attitude when riding. It is common for us to focus on the negative behavior and then get frustrated with the horse because she won't stop this behavior. But what if you decided to use that behavior as a signal to practice a response that you want better anyway? This will totally change your attitude towards that 'unwanted' behavior and will give you a better trained horse by the end of your ride. The only drawback is you may not be able to ride as far as you wanted in the first few days or weeks while you 'replace' the 'unwanted' behaviors with 'wanted' responses. Let's take standing still for example. I like a horse that stands still when I mount, after I mount and every time I stop for any reason whether at a gate or just because. But teaching a horse to stand still and wait can be a challenge. Just trying to hold them back not only doesn't keep them still, it can be dangerous when the horse's emotions 'load up'. This can lead to rearing, backing, going sideways, etc. So I have 2 replacement exercises that I do to teach my horse to stand and wait. The first is disengaging the hip. The best way to soften the horse's give to the bit and still keep the reins connected to the feet is by moving the hip off the bridle. So practicing disengaging the hip is a great replacement when a horse just has to move. It can be done in a relatively small space so the horse really is not going anywhere. It gives the horse the

freedom to move if its self-control is not developed enough to control its feet. You have something positive to focus on instead of the fact that your horse is not doing what you really wanted it to do; and you have a better trained horse when you get home. If I have a horse that is really bad about not standing still and I have worked with it some on a ride without it getting a lot better, I will just take a couple days and make that his ride. I will saddle him and get him ready to ride, both doing ground work and riding warm-up. Then I will take him to a safe area, mount up, drop some slack and wait. I have already decided to disengage his hip every time he moves until he will stand still. So when he moves, I take my cue and move his hip, being specific about softness and response. I will do one side until he stops for a couple seconds, then I will switch sides for the next set. I resist the temptation to just pull back on both reins and each time he stops I give him slack. I want him to take responsibility and stand still with the reins loose. When he finally gives up and acts like he will stand there all day, I move him 10 feet down the road or trail and start again. I may not get more than 100 yards from home in an hour's worth of riding but, if I do this for a couple of days, I will only have to do a little touch-up every now and then to keep him solid for the rest of the time I own this horse. The second exercise I use to teach standing still is backing and sometimes just move/counter move. The concept is the same. The horse's movement signals me to use a particular cue to get a desired response. If I feel the horse getting excited with its head out in front though, I will just go back

to moving the hip. Then I will progress back to both reins. As he gets solid, I will begin taking him on the trails again and remind myself to practice often until he learns to stop and stand and wait until I cue him to move again. The Replacement Concept can be used for all kind of trail riding areas such as eating on the trail, jigging, buddy sour, constantly trying to turn back, crossing obstacles‌the list goes on and on. It also works great in the arena. Next time, I will give you more ideas for some of the above mentioned issues to help you make your trail riding season just a little more enjoyable this year. You are invited to come join me for the Sensible Summer Fun 3-Day Clinic, June 1-3 at Kirks Mountain Ranch. I also have a 3-Day Clinic in Pullman, June 15-17. Hope I see you at one of these and have a great summer. Ann Ann Kirk is available for Sensible Horsemanship Clinics, Workshops or Lessons in your area. She also offers her services for evaluations. For more information on Ann and her Sensible Horsemanship Programs go to www.annkirk.com. Beginning Sensible Horsemanship is available in a DVD series with a new addition - Sensible Trailer Loading.

Western Dressage? North American Western Dressage has recently completed and published the Official Rulebook and the NAWD Official Western Dressage Tests. Now you might ask, “What is ‘Western Dressage’? This developing discipline is very exciting to many riders, trainers, breeders and exhibitors who choose horses of all breeds as our partners, and who, for various reasons, prefer to sit in stock type saddles. Good dressage training benefits any horse/rider combination in any discipline and western dressage will open doors for education and increased understanding of the classical training previously closed to many. North American Western Dressage is dedicated to finding common ground between the two disciplines, educating riders from all backgrounds, and to making dressage concepts accessible to western riders without minimizing the importance of the training pyramid nor sacrificing the principles that are fundamental to classical dressage. It is the hope of the organization that western dressage continues to develop into a unique discipline in this country and around the world, one that is distinct from dressage and differentiated from other western riding styles. North American Western Dressage (NAWD) was conceived in 2010 to answer the desire for a venue in which western riders could ride, train and even show horses traditionally thought of as “western horses but who perform in the manner of a classically trained dressage horse. Western and English riders have many differences, but all want to build a better relationship with their horses. Dressage training, with its focus on relaxation, rhythm, balance, connection, suppleness and collection, is one avenue via which riders can improve

communication with their horses. Bringing the idea of western dressage to life has been a process. There were and continue to be many questions to answer. The first of these, “What is Western Dressage?â€? is the most important as it provides the foundation from which all other points of development arise. How should this question be tackled? Should western saddles be put on dressage horses? Probably not. Should western pleasure horses be put in dressage saddles? Certainly not! Should western trained horses be put in the dressage arena and ride dressage figures? The result is an 11 minute walktrot test with no gymnastic benefit and little resemblance to classical dressage. Should an attempt be made to blend these seemingly different disciplines into one new thing? This will certainly be the most challenging solution to the problem of defining western dressage. How can the discipline stay true to either foundation, and if one is chosen, which one? Good horsemanship is good horsemanship through the centuries and around the world‌ surely common ground can be found! Who will teach and coach Western Dressage riders? Industry professionals, of course, but only trainers and instructors who demonstrate a clear grasp of both classical dressage training principles and familiarity with western breeds and disciplines are actually qualified to do so.

Apparent Link Between Chronic Pain and Aggression In Horses by Susan Allen

Animals in pain often exhibit aggressive behavior. It’s interesting that while most of us have been warned or (even experienced firsthand) the aggression of a wounded dog or cat, when it comes to our own horses and ponies we often overlook the fact that chronic discomfort caused, for example, from a poor fitting saddle can create behavior changes that make a horse react aggressively towards humans. I came across a French study where the research team felt that there might be parallels regarding how both horses and humans deal with chronic pain. Armed with a study on humans that cited that 70% of people in pain expressed feelings of anger, the French researchers set out to see if the same held true for horses and concluded that there is a definite link between chronic pain and aggression, similar to that in people. The team from the University of Rennes observed 59 riding horses ages 5 to 20 years old, predominantly geldings from three different French riding facilities. The horses went

through a series of five behavior tests typically used to judge how a horse relates to its human partner. Chiropractors examined the horses prior to starting and during the research and determined that 73% of the horses were severely affected with back and spine issues from years of riding and of these 75% exhibited negative behavior towards humans, evidenced by pinning ears back, threatening to bite and kick etc. Apparently, this is the first experimental study of its kind and it supports the hypothesis that there is an association between chronic discomfort and aggression in horses. So many horses are unfairly labeled difficult, mean or aggressive and often extreme and cruel methods are employed to try to train them when, in reality, the solution could be a visit to the veterinarian or chiropractor. The full study “Partners with bad temper: reject or cure? A study of chronic pain and aggression in horses. Was published in the journal of PloS ONE in 2010. Open Range evolved like a child. For years I wanted to produce a radio show that celebrates the components which make living out west unique. It's infancy began with an adventure/travel script, then a horse show, a rodeo report, pro-ag commentary and finally the American Rancher. All good ideas, programs and efforts. Yet, each failed to fully encompass my passion for the west, it's lore and lifestyle. Unlike other regions, the Pacific Northwest is uniquely diverse. A fascinaitng cornucopia of people: urbanites in Portland and Seattle that

flock to wine and ski country in droves separated by mere hours from buckaroos that crave solitude with cattle and horses under the hauntingly beautiful Steen's Mountains. I fell in love with rodeo as St. Paul rodeo princess traveling throughout the Northwest promoting the sport on my AQHA, Sammy Dee. Out of college my first "real" job was in PR with the Northern California Thoroughbread Association at Golden Gate and Bay Meadows racetracks. This led to a passion to rehabilitate OTB thoroughbreds and a special place in my heart for those amazing athletes. I was also fortunate to spend a week with the BLM, learning to gentle wild mustangs as part of a project to promote more adoptions on the radio. Thus, I am a mixed bag when it comes to the equestrian disciplines. I team rope, with my familly on our horse farm in Walla Walla and love watching my son, Tommy, and accomplished horseman compete in tie down roping. I can be brought to tears by a clean round of Olympic show jumping or the Kentucky Derby. At least two days a week of the Open Range radio program are dedicated toward equine topics because horses; whether they be the wild Kigers in Eastern Oregon, Thoroughbred crosses at our University poll clubs (WSU and OSU) or a working ranch horse near Idaho Falls, are embedded deeply in our western culture and heritage. If the bald eagle symolizes a free nation, then the horse with it's many disciplines; riding, roping, racing, running, working cows, jumping... stands alone as a vestige of the diversity and spirit of the West. Please email comments, events or ideas for stories to sallen@aginfor.net and I invite you to become a part of the Open Range facebook community at facebook.com/openrange.allen

A

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM

On The Bright Side There always seem to be folks who need to say something good, even at the worst of times. Like Mrs. Custer. She might have said, “Well, on the bright side, at least he was wearing clean undies.” Last spring on a gather we set out to find an evasive 300 lb steer, we’ll call him Rompy. We made a big circle and never found him but we did discover a leak in the water line. Just luck, maybe, but on the bright side, it made the ride worth it. The next day we rode out early and found him with his mother and a couple other cows. All went well, we sorted off Rompy at the trap and took him to the headquarters with intentions to hold him overnight for the sale the next day. We unsaddled and I stuck a water hose through the boards of the little pen where Rompy was being held. Pretty good morning, I was thinking, then Rompy came unglued! He could see daylight through a 3’ wide pipe gate into the loading alley. He took four runs at it. I ran around the other side to frighten him back. It didn’t work! On his fifth try he crashed over the top, bending the rail perpendicular. I dove out of the way as he sailed over me!

I looked back over my shoulder and remember thinking, this must be what a torpedo looks like leaving a submarine! We would see him again 30 minutes later on a big ridge overlooking town. We tracked him half a mile, through one fence and into a big BLM canyon. With a huge dose of luck (finding him), enough opportunities (catching him), and two stout horses (dragging him), we got him to a road. My partner hog-tied him and I went to get the rescue unit. Our location was unreachable by trailer so I brought the old pickup. I loaded it up with an assortment of possibly useful items and returned to the scene. The steer was still on the fight and too heavy to lift or manhandle. After much cowboy cogitation we took two 8’ two by twelves and laid a ramp from the tailgate to Rompy. We tried to push him up but he wouldn’t slide. I dug through the box and came up with a come-a-long, however, we had no place to chain it. “Wait a minute!”, I said, “Flip over that gooseneck turnover ball and hook it there!” We flipped it over, chained it to the ball, pulled out the cable and ran it through some cotton rope we had wrapped around the hog-tie. My partner started cranking and I kept the head and tail-ends balanced as we drug Rompy into the bed of the pickup an inch and a grunt at a time. It was as much fun as changing a split rim tire off a Peterbilt. All three of us looked like we had been drug through a knothole. Even Rompy had lost his steam. But, on the bright side, I guess we could have been grape farmers. I don’t think we’d ever be able to load a 300 lb wild raisin… ain’t nothin’ to tie to! www.baxterblack.com

Toscafire is sired by Afire Bey V (for 10 years the leading sire at the U.S. Nationals). His dam, Matoskette, was Scottsdale Reserve Champion in English Pleasure. She is by Zodiac Matador who is a three-time U.S. National Champion in Park. Matoskette’s tail female line includes Mi Toska, who was a Canadian National Champion Mare and U.S. National Champion in Pleasure Driving. Mi Toska also earned a U.S. National Top Ten in English Pleasure and Mare Halter. Toscafire is a full brother to Afire’s Vision (who currently stands at Battaglia Farms). Toscafire has a very impressive pedigree without a doubt. He also has an equally impressive show record and is siring foals that are following in his footsteps. Toscafire was last shown in 2010. He

stayed home in 2011 to breed mares. He has multiple regional titles – Top 5’s, Reserve’s and Champion’s and ended the 2010 show season with a Canadian National Top 10 Award. Toscafire has been shown Park, Costume, Side Saddle, and Show Hack. He has a very gentle disposition and is extremely easy to be around. Under saddle he has a BIG motor with an even bigger heart.

Toscafire’s son, Sparkssafire, earned 2 Canadian

Top 10 titles in 2011. Toscafire has foals with Scottsdale and regional titles. One of his purebred foals has had a very successful endurance career. To date, Toscafire has sired 9 foals. He has proven himself as a show horse and as a sire.

My Fabulous

“SAMULE is For Sale!

L

ooking for the perfect home for a very special mule! I never dreamed I would part with him, but now that I don’t own my own horse property and I am not showing anymore, he is starving for love and exercise! He is missing his time to “shine in the arena! Any of you who know my spotted guy, know he can do it all in the show world! He has taken “high point over all of the horses at an open Horse Show being the only Mule in the show! He has competed in all Western and English classes, Halter and Showmanship, Trail, Obstacle Courses, and even jumping! He has been on many trail rides in the mountains and has crossed rivers and streams, but I will say he would NOT be a good pack Mule! He belongs in the show ring! He would be a great prospect for “BISHOP!! I will definitely be very particular on finding the right home for my special boy, so please call me at 509-280-3000 or email me at sheri@sheritilton.com if you are interested. He was born 6/23/94, and is for sale for $4,500. — Sheri Tilton
