Did you know Father’s Day was founded 101 years ago in Spokane? A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd lost her mother when she was 16 years old. She grew up on a farm in Wilbur WA., and was raised with 5 siblings by her widowed father. She made it her vow to honor her father--and all deserving fathers--- after hearing a moving Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. Vowing that fathers deserved equal recognition as mothers, she took the idea to the Spokane YMCA the following year. The date and time of this now wellknown holiday coincides with Sonora’s father’s birthday.
