Benefits of Slow Feeding By Michelle K. Binder-Zolezzi, Relational Riding Academy Horse owners should know how the equine digestive system works. Horses are “trickle feeders” so need a constant flow of fiber to keep things healthy and working well. Feeding two flakes of hay and a can of grain twice a day is not a natural way to manage your horses diet. Horses prefer to eat with their heads down. This position allows nasal passages to drain and permits them to see almost 360 degrees. If you watch a horse eat hay out of an overhead feeder, you’ll notice that when hay is on the ground he will switch from the feeder to eating what he has spilled. Sometimes you’ll see horses actually throw the hay out of the feeder…they know what’s natural. Scattering hay simulates grazing but is time consuming for you as well as wasteful. The term “bolus eating”, describes horses that eat hay free choice and all at once. When you throw your horse two or three flakes of hay he will eat it until it is gone, then be hungry well before you get home to feed him again at night. Slowing down the rate at which horses can access hay means that the digestive process is slowed down and nutrients in hay can be absorbed much more efficiently. Slow feeding horses provides a continuous feeding method, which means

your horse will constantly be foraging, thereby stimulating their digestive system as well as their mind. Under these conditions your horse’s body will work as nature has intended. How can we shift to a slow feeding method? Try a Box Feeder With a Box Feeder the horse is “grazing” through a metal grid. We have not experienced any problems with the horses lips or tongues from the metal grids even in extremely cold winter temperatures. Of course the size of the openings in the grid makes a difference and you might be surprised at how much hay a horse can consume through 3 inch openings! Box feeders can be designed to have the horse eat from the top or from the side, to be covered or open and to have sloping floors. With a top feeder the metal grid is placed on top of the hay. As the horse consumes the hay, the grid follows it down to the floor. Feeders should be nearly completely empty before refilling to avoid spoilage. With a side feeder the metal grid is placed vertically while a slanted bottom makes the hay slide down to the grid for the horse to eat. Hay can become stuck instead of sliding so material and slope become critical to the success of the side feeder. Box feeders should be safe and durably constructed as

well as weather resistant to keep hay dry. They may be constructed any size so our outside box feeders hold up to two average bales of hay. It is also possible to feed more than one horse from the same feeder by building them to allow single or double sided access. These designs are the most dependable when properly managed. Using this feeding method we are able to fill feeders every two to three days and our horses are not fat, they are happy. Larger covered feeders of a similar style that are designed to feed round bales are also available. The covered models keep hay from spoiling in the weather and restrict access as well. Managed access through a grill or grate ensures that the hay stays in the feeder, clean and dry and that you can fill it much less often. Some covered large bale feeders do not regulate how much hay can be accessed and so waste is a problem. We have found managed access to be the best solution to both waste and convenience when feeding from large bales. Some people have tried soft feeders like hay nets and small mesh hay nets even over large bales. Nets are not as durable as box feeders; they are difficult to load, the hay gets wet and horses can easily become entangled in them especially

when shod. If they are left on the ground, horses will trample and soil the hay that remains in them instead of eating it. This works for some but we were not happy with the results. On our farm we have been able to utilize both small box feeders inside and out as well as covered large round bale feeders to achieve terrific results in slow feeding. Our feeder designs have proven safe and effective and have survived almost three years of “field trialsâ€?. Horses Good As Gold Some horses are as good as gold. They take care of kids just learning, old cowgirls with osteoporosis, cowboys of any age who should have a designated driver, and homeward bound riders lost in a blizzard. I classify these gold horses in the same category as those equidae who performed routinely heroic duties in the Pony Express, pulling cannons in the civil war, Seabiscuit, and Trigger, who could always save Roy in times of distress. There’s a heroic picture of Cannonball hanging on the wall at Cheryl and Howard’s ranch house on the Wasatch front. One morning Howard was tending to his artificial insemination program and had to drive to town. He asked Cheryl to ride through the cows to check for those in heat. He left Cannonball saddled up in the barn. Cheryl was the kind of horseman who rode when it was necessary. However, she had little interest in learning more than the basics; get on, go straight, turn or stop. The equivalent of a motorcar driver who doesn’t change flats, drive anything with a clutch, and never thinks of checking the oil. She assumes

someone else worries about that stuff. She puffed out to the barn in her down-coat, mud boots, mittens and stocking cap. Using a block for a stool, she climbed aboard. Cheryl trusted Cannonball. Howard was proud of his new saddle, custom made by Bob Schild in Blackfoot. It was heavy and still squeaked. Out amidst the cows they trod purposefully and soon spotted one showing signs of estrus. Cheryl approached the cow, leaned out over the right side to read the tag and the saddle slipped fast as a fireman down a flagpole! She was under Cannonball’s belly with one foot still in the stirrup, hung up and completely upside down! From her precarious position she eyed Cannonball. She had thoughts of being drug to death, or paralyzed! Had she written her will? Who will raise her children? And, ‘Did I leave anything simmering on the stove?’ flooded her mind! Fast-forward twenty minutes. Cheryl had extracted herself unhurt. She could not figure out how to undo the saddle so she unbuckled, unsnapped, untied and unwrapped every attachment she could find until it fell to the ground. The trusty Cannonball watched the whole process with resignation and patience. It took three trips but she managed to drag the horse, saddle tree and all the pieces back to the barn. When she told Howard her story he said, “My gosh! Why didn’t you check the cinch?” She plopped her hands on her hips and said indignantly, “Now who in the world would ever think of that?” www.baxterblack.com

Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cell Therapy for Ligament and Tendon Injuries in Horses Robert K. Schneider, DVM MS McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital - Spokane, Washington

Tendon and ligament injuries are common in performance horses. Athletic horses are asked to perform at high speed, make sudden changes in direction, jump over obstacles, or make repetitive movements that could increase strain on the ligaments and tendons that support their joints. It is not surprising that these important weight-bearing structures are injured because they are frequently stretched beyond their biomechanical limits when the horse is performing. Tearing of the fibers in the ligament or tendon results in inflammation, swelling, pain, and lameness that takes the horse out of performance. The injury can be career ending for some horses. Treatment involves putting the horse through a rest and rehabilitation program that allows time for the tendon or ligament to heal. There is a new treatment available for horses with these injuries. This treatment uses stem cells that are obtained from the horse’s bone marrow, cultured in a laboratory, and then injected back into the injured tendon or ligament. I have used this treatment in more than 300 horses with serious injuries to a tendon or ligament. The successful results in these clinical cases and research studies on stem cells make this the most promising new treatment currently available for horses with tendon or ligament injuries. The treatment involves taking bone marrow from the ster-

num between the front legs of the horse. This is accomplished with the horse standing, sedated, using local anesthesia. The bone marrow is aspirated through a large needle that is placed into the sternum. The bone marrow is then shipped overnight to the Advanced Regenerative Therapy (ART) LaboraRobert K. Schneider, DVM MS tory in Fort Collins, Colorado (www.art4dvm.com). Stem cells are isolated from the bone marrow and cultured to greatly increase the number of stem cells. This process takes 2 to 3 weeks, then the cells are frozen and shipped overnight back to the equine hospital. Usually 10 to 20 million cells are injected into the injured area in the tendon or ligament. More cells can be cultured when necessary. The cells are thawed and injected into the injured area of the tendon or ligament using ultrasound guidance under general anesthesia. General anesthesia is necessary to insure precise accurate injection into the injured area of the tendon or ligament.

Krisean Performance Horses “Life With the Blue-Eyed Wonders” by Jill Smith I closed down my computer and headed out the door for some face to face time with my stallions. I was musing to myself how interesting life is when you have a talking horse. “Friends” on the computer are nice but there’s just nothing like real time conversing with a stallion. Uh oh, my blue-eyed Quarter Horse stallion, Commander (the one who talks) was over by the barn and deep in conversation with my Arab stallion, Timer (the one who probably can talk but so far hasn’t graced me with a word). Usually in this breeding time of year the two of them are trading stallion insults over the fence as to who breeds mares with the greatest aplomb. Right now they were obviously and very quietly discussing something else. This always means trouble! “Hi guys, it’s nice to see you playing so well together,” I ventured as I surveyed the pile of interesting objects that they had amassed in the space between their pastures. Commander raised his blue eyes to meet my blue eyes and gave me the dumb-blonde-you-don’t understand-look as he haughtily said, “We just happen to be building a major new Internet program for horses. It will be the next big thing!” You know, they never cease to amaze me. Who would have thought that horses even knew anything about computers, let

alone the Internet! “The horse world has watched with interest as humans spend more and more time on Facebook,” Commander said as his equineentrepreneurial spirit kicked in. “Timer and I have decided that it’s time for horses to have their day communicating on the Internet and making friends! Just think of all the mares that might want to contact me!” I’m starting to get the picture, as unbelievable as it may sound. There are strange things that happen in this world. Maybe there was alien equine intelligence that erected the pyramids in Egypt, created Machu Picchu, built the Great Wall in China and made Roy Rogers and Trigger a star... “We are in the process of creating the first horse “friend” site ever done. An equine Facebook!“ Commander continued with a far away look in his blue eyes. “It will be called TAIL BOOK!!”

I dropped back to earth pretty quick on that one. “What! How can you possibly do that?!” “There are more women on Facebook than men and mares will jump at the chance to be the first in their pasture on Tail Book.” Commander stated. “Do you know that there are 9.2 million horses in the United States alone? And many are mares!” He did have his facts right. I don’t know how he knows but there are over 166 million people on Facebook in the US and 56% of them are women. On social networking sites, women rack up an astonishing 99 million more visits per month than men! Even more amazing, women make up 55% of the online gaming population. “So just how are you going to accomplish this new computer site task?” I ventured to ask, hoping that they indeed hadn’t really found some “adventure-capitalist” who would invest in this. Venture capital people seem to throw money at some of the wildest ideas! “Well, we have been gathering the parts for the base computer unit.” Commander proudly said. “Here’s our screen and mouse.” He pointed to an old screen off the barn window just as a jaunty little mouse stepped out from behind it and offered me a high five. I do have my limits and high five-ing a mouse is too much! So just how do you tell an over enthused stallion that his computer knowledge is a little off base?! “We have memory covered too” Commander continued undaunted. “We’re bringing the donkey in on that, he’s got a mega-bite!” “Just why did you name it Tail Book?” I literally couldn’t think of anything else to say. “People tell tales on Facebook, they don’t tell “faces”! It was completely misnamed.” Commander said. “Tail Book will be where tales are told! And when I give my come-to-mechickadee stallion call, all the mares on Tail Book will raise their.....” “Commander! Stop, that’s too much information!” “I’ll spend all day on Tail Book talking to mares. I want to be sure I have more posts and mare friends than Timer!” Commander snorted. I saw my opening! “Well I guess since you’ll be all tied up making snorting posts on Tail Book all day, Timer will have to actually breed the mares.” Timer gave a yee haw whinny and Commander yelled over the fence, “You don’t breed as well as I do!” Back came a derogatory horse comment followed by an even worse snorted remark from Commander dealing with Timer’s heritage. Oh my, the manure was really flying now! I smiled and turned away, things were back to normal. Ann Kirk Horses and Obstacles, Part Two Last article I spoke of why it is good to teach your horse to deal calmly and confidently with obstacles he might encounter on the trail. This time I will share with you my way of teaching him this lesson. By setting up objects that represent obstacles in a safe place, I can give my horse the time he needs to learn the correct way to address and negotiate whatever may block our path. When I teach obstacles, I like to think of them as tests to see if I have the connection with my horse that I think I have. When you send your child to school to learn to read, he must first learn the alphabet, then put the letters together to make words and eventually put the words together to make sentences and stories. The only way to see if the child has learned the lessons successfully is to test him regularly. Doing well on the test will confirm knowledge of the alphabet and their use. So the alphabet would be connecting the left rein to the hip and to the shoulder and to the feet so you can move your horse right, left, forward and backwards on cue. They would include a great head-down cue, a go-forward cue and a send cue, etc. And when taught from the right rein, they are a whole new set of letters. When you start combining the moves, they become like words and these basics should be in place before you start working on specific obstacles. So, before we start on an object, be sure to review your controls.

Then pick an easy obstacle and let’s get started. For this article, I am going to use a tarp. Now, I would not suggest you start with a tarp if your horse is afraid of it. Start by having your horse cross a log, a piece of board or something else less frightening. Set the obstacle in a safe, preferably enclosed location so if the horse pulls away it does not get away. If you are setting up a tarp, lay it out flat and put something heavy on the corners or edges to keep it in place. Put a snaffle bit on your horse and take a lead, whip and gloves with you to the training area. When I teach a lesson, I am always thinking of how I want it to be when I am in the saddle. So, I know I cannot lead my horse over the obstacle while on the ground and have him do as well when I am riding him. I must have a go-forward cue I can use to drive him over, under, or into the obstacle from the ground because I will be ‘driving’ him when I am on his back. I move away from the obstacle to teach this cue so my “student” can learn the new “letter” without the pressure of the test. I secure my reins in such a way that the horse can put his head down to smell the obstacle without pulling on the bit

or stepping into his reins. I will then hook a lead into the left side of his bit, place my whip on my shoulder and start the lesson. I use a “kissing� sound to cue my horse for movement so I start by ‘kissing’ to my horse with a slow steady rhythm. If he has not moved by the 2nd kiss, I start moving the whip towards his hip. By the 6th kiss, I start tapping his hip with an increasing pressure until he takes a step forward. I immediately stop kissing and return the whip to my shoulder. I repeat the steps again and again until he moves forward every time he hears the kiss and I don’t have to move the whip. You will teach this lesson from both sides. Switch the lead to the right side of the bit. Be sure the horse steps forward, not to the side before releasing the pressure. Don’t stop kissing even when you have to add the whip or your horse will cue from the whip and not the kiss. You don’t have to use a kiss; any verbal cue is effective if you are consistent. This goforward cue will help you the rest of the time you own this horse once it is taught correctly. Now, pick a side, (I usually start from the left), take hold of the lead fairly close to the bit to control the horse’s direction and cue your horse towards the tarp. Keep his nose pointed towards a specific spot and cue him forward. Let him stop when he gets as close as he is comfortable, praise him for his response and then cue him forward again. If he is fairly calm, he will stop close to the edge of the tarp. If he is scared, he may stop 10 ft away. Let him stop as this is where the obstacle starts for him. It may not just be the tarp but the space around it that this horse needs to get confident in dealing with. Don’t get in a hurry or you will just add more anxiety to an already

fearful setting. The lesson is the same and the emotional training has long lasting results. Starting from where the horse stops, kiss and ask him for another step forward. Release when he takes a forward step and praise him. In the beginning, let him step back again as it helps the emotion come back down. When you think you can, ask for another step. If he gets in the habit of a step forward and then back, still release when he goes forward but cue again as soon as he starts to step back. Repeat this dance until he stays at the forward step spot. Let him relax and then go through all the steps to advance him to the tarp. If you cue him forward and he starts backing, just follow him back, continuing to kiss and tap until he takes a forward step. Release the pressure and cue him back to his starting point. When his next step is onto the tarp, he may get nervous again. Be patient and remember why you are doing this lesson; to condition a confident response and to test your bit control. When you cue him forward, remember to keep a short hold on his lead or rein so you can guide the nose and to keep him from running over you as an escape route. He will want to smell the tarp and probably paw it to see if it is solid so you will have to adjust your hold but don’t let him have too much slack or he can knock you down before you can stop him. The best is if he will let you baby step him onto and across the tarp. Depending on his fear level and on previous “tarp� sessions, he may step on and then back of rapidly or he may get his front feet on quietly but then bolt across with his back

ones. Horses are more fearful of strange stuff under their back feet than around the front. They can’t see it as well and are therefore more guarded. So don’t try to make them walk perfectly over the tarp in the beginning. I hold my lead in such a way that when he finally goes over, I can give him slack and let him cross without running into the bit. I will put him back and forth several times before getting more specific with speed control and foot placement. Then, by using the bit, I will start asking him to go slower and let me control his speed with the reins until I can stop him anywhere on the tarp, back him or step him forward as many steps as I want and he is relaxed and in control of his emotions during the process. I have had to do this lesson against a fence and use both reins as if I were riding to get control of some horses that have learned to bolt through anything when they are scared but it totally changed them from then on. Again, don’t start with the scariest thing you can find; pick easy stuff and get them giving you the correct answer every time. Then the harder stuff like loading in a trailer or jumping over a log won’t be that big of a deal. Crossing water can be another tough one but this lesson is the ultimate way to teach your horse to walk through water with ease. Until next time....ride safe and God Bless.........
