Every genuine or would be cowboy’s pride and joy is his ‘good dawg!’ One of the highlights at a Stock Show is the stock dog trials. Now, allowin’ for the fact that all my exposure to stock dogs in the past had been on workin’ cow outfits, I wasn’t prepared to see a dog that actually obeyed his master’s commands! It was quite a shock. Accordin’ to the rules there were six classes of competition; three with cattle and three with sheep. They were divided into Advanced, Open and Started. In the Advanced category the trainer could not cross a certain point in the arena. Using primarily voice commands, he instructed his dog to drive cattle through a series of gates, chutes and other obstacles. These dogs were a pleasure to watch. They were quick and quiet and like a good cutting horse, anticipated the critter’s moves. One of the best dogs was blind!
In the second category, the Open, they were a little less polished. The trainer was allowed to stay closer to the dog and used more hand signals and a louder voice. These dogs had moments of brilliance but, like any sophomore, occasionally they get a little too exuberant or stopped to check out the crowd. The Starter category was a three-ring circus! Wally’s dog Ruby, looked like a cub bear on his first date! His hand signals reminded me of a shipwrecked sailor who’d just spotted the rescue plane. He used a lot of the same voice commands I’ve heard you ranchers use on your own dogs. Ruby had the attention span of a Bartlett pear. Matter of fact four minutes into her trial run she decided Wally could handle it by himself and left! All the dogs entered were Border Collie, Australian Shepherd or Kelpie. I asked why I didn’t see any Blue Heelers. I was told it was difficult to put a “good finish” on a Blue Heeler. I thought that was a kind way to put it. I’ve heard some of you ranchers putting “finishing touches” on your Blue Heelers with training aids like shovel handles, fly swatter and boot toes. I remember once Donnie arrived with his dog when Ed was gatherin’ his cows. Ed said, “Donnie, havin’ you and ol’ Badger help is like havin’ two good men not show up!” www.baxterblack.com

Sacking out—the FirSt touch By Ann Kirk
Hello again! It is Summer and we are in the middle of the best riding of the year. Whether you have a good seasoned horse, a young one you are starting to train or one that is less than ideal, these next lessons can help teach your horse more self-control. I’m looking forward to sharing with you another step to increase safety and improve the connection with your horse. How did you like the last lesson? I know it can seem like the horse will never get it but, trust me, I have taught this lesson to lots of horses and it works on all breeds (including donkeys and mules), all ages and all genders. It also has taught me more patience and better timing every time I’ve taught it. So don’t give up for it is a critical foundation to build upon. Now, theoretically, we have not yet touched the horse. I know that most of you are working with horses that you can catch, move to the round pen to work and then catch to put away. But some may be working with Mustangs or horses that have not been handled much and touching or catching them is not so easy. Or they are fine with you but seem suspicious of anything you have in your hand or anything out of place. It also does wonders for problems with fly spray or baths. This lesson will provide a starting point for eliminating these concerns.
You will need your lariat or lunge line and your hands. Your horse should be loose in the round pen. When you enter, he should turn to face you and stay looking at you without moving off. If your horse takes off or ignores your cue to turn and face, you must work on the previous lesson until he is solid enough to stop and face you on command. If you do not have the stand and face cue solid, you cannot effectively teach the next several lessons. When the horse is standing solid and facing you, you can begin your approach. You want to keep your motivation tool in your hands in case you need to move him off and reset him. But the goal is to only approach as far as he is comfortable in the beginning. So if you can get to within 10 ft but he would leave at 9, turn and walk away at an angle and ask him to turn to face up before you start again. Every time you approach (on a concerned horse) it raises the emotions and when you walk away, the emotions go back down. By walking away,

you let the horse know that is all you wanted for that moment and he will get more confident in your approach. Keep working closer and closer until the horse will let you stand directly in front without moving away. The first place I want to touch my horse is on the face between the eyes. I am very diligent about handling a horse’s head so I start there. Also, it is the farthest from the hind feet! If I can teach the horse to look at me and let me walk up and pet its face, I can be certain it is not going to run away. It is hard to catch a horse that is afraid or just bad about having its head controlled so I spend a lot of time making sure that is good. There have been a few horses that the shoulder was the first touch but I never quit until the face is first. When you’re relatively certain the horse will stand, raise your hand as you approach the horse. This can raise the emotions again. You may have to make your approach progressive and repeat until your horse will stand when you approach with your hand raised to touch him. When able, pet the face briefly and walk away. Remember, horses learn on the release of pressure so, if you raise your hand and the

horse seems concerned, keep your hand up without touching him but don’t leave until he shows signs of relaxing. If the horse backs away from you, just slowly follow him with your hand still up until he stops his feet, then walk away. If the horse turns to leave, step to the side and cue him back with the “kiss”. If he continues to leave, move him a few steps, a few trips or a few minutes of turns to reset his feet and get him to try harder. Then ask for a little less and build upon it until you can consistently walk up, pet his forehead and walk away. This will give you the starting point for next month’s lesson on working the whole horse. Again, I realize that most of you won’t have problems touching your horses but for those who are frustrated with your horse’s fear or struggle with catching your horse, this is the best lesson and will give you years of enjoyment. I am on a state parks committee assigned the responsibility to identify and map official trails in Riverside State Park. This project has gotten off to a slow start and has hit some bumps in the road. However, based on a meeting last night I can now see a better direction and progress.
Ponderosa Back Country Horsemen has committed to installing the trail markers in the equestrian area. We do not know yet when this will happen.

The Riverside State Park Foundation will contract with and pay for the design and production of the map. Major funding for this is from REI and we thank them for their support. A second phase of the project will be to identify well used social trails that should be included in the official trails. This will be done using maps and user input. We look forward to that portion of the project.
We met to discuss a more efficient way of obtaining a final product that will serve the public sooner. Basically we are identifying the current official trails, designing and placing trail markers and producing a map, both hard copy and electronic. Now that all sounds pretty simple but it is still a very large project. We also talked about an education program, adopt a trail program and the ability to put trail descriptions on the website version of the map.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is a relatively new tool in our treatment of performance horse injuries. it is non invasive and avoids competition conflicts such as with drug withdrawal issues. Shock wave therapy has been around since the 1980’s having been first used to break up /kidney Dr. John Herning, DVM stones in human patients. Then saw it use expand to tendons and ligaments with the treatment of human plantar fasciitis. From there it was used on bone spurs,lower back pain and multiple other regions in human patient. It is now an established new technology for treating musculoskeletal injuries in horses. From outside the body (extracorporeal), the machine generates high-intensity shock or pressure wave which pulse to a specific site within the injured tissue, this stimulates and accelerates the healing process by reducing inflammation, increasing circulation and stimulating bone production (osteogenesis). It does this by creating cavitation within the tissue essentialy causing microtrauma stimulating the body into releasing anti inflammatory factors, Nitric Oxide and growth factors such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor

(VEGF). VEGF is responsible for creating a vascular supple where there typically is not any. The lack of vascular supply is what helps to cause many problems such as tendonitis.

Some of the other growth factors may enable stem cell homing to a certain area. Previously in conditions such as proximal suspensory desmitis (high suspensory) we attempted to get the same effect by injecting counter irritants into the affected area. The treatment itself consists of shaving or washing the treatment area and saturating with alcohol then applying ultrasound gel to maximize conduction of the shock wave thru the skin to the focused depth. Typically the protocol calls for 1000 - 1500 shocks and can usually be done without sedation or a small amount.The machine works on the principle of two metal objects hitting each other at a speed of 50 miles per hour to create the shock wave. Because of this it can be noisy and I have found more of the horses react to the noise vs the shock. Typical treatment protocol is 3 treatments with 10-14 days between treatment. Because of this ability to stimulate circulation and recruit stem cells Shock Wave Therapy is very helpful in tendon, ligament and bone injuries, all structures with little normal blood supply and low metabolic activity. Proximal suspensory desmitis or “High Suspensory” injuries are particularly well suited to Shock Wave. It’s non invasive nature and effectiveness make it especially helpful even as a maintenance therapy. Other structures that benefit are collateral ligament injuries. These are the small ligaments that help to stabilize and hold bones together. In recent years stem cell injections of these ligaments has helped with healing and now research has shown that concurrent Shock Wave therapy enhances the stem cells. It does this by stimulating the production of
Nitric Oxide, the “holy grail” of stem cell therapy. In addition, research has shown by tagging stem cells that they concentrate in areas previously treated with shock wave. Shock Wave therapy has also shown an immediate, but relatively short duration of analgesia, or pain suppressing effect making the horse more comfortable and relieving stress if only for a few days. This effect is well proven to the point that it’s use is regulated and banned at competitions and track racing in the days prior to competing. Shock wave machines have started to come down in size making them even more portable and with their increasing use I’m sure even more conditions will be found that can benefit from it’s application. These may include “kissing spines”, general back muscle soreness and with it’s ability to focus the shock greater stimulation of acupuncture points.
